5-0 out of 5 stars Tired of all those confusing opinions about your love life?
Sharon S. Brehm is a respected social psychologist who has composed a witty, fun, and insightful tome regarding the many fascinating contributions her field has made to the study of love relationships. Popular press books may or may not offer valid advice--they aren't relyingon scientific research, but rather on opinions (which often conflict withthe opinions found in still other books).Brehm offers her readersinformation that is reliable and valid, and perhaps most importantly, useful.Better still, her book is equally applicable for men and women. As a psychology professor and a consultant for individuals seeking theirlife mate, I read and use many books--texts and popular press--on thisissue.Brehm's book is among my most trusted resources, and it givesreaders the best of all worlds: excellent and engaging writing that iseasily understood, information that is eminently useful, and solid researchevidence rather than opinion alone.Should you live together?Doesmarriage really make people happier than if they had remained single?Whatattracts romantic partners? If you want "just the facts," thisis the place to go for them.(If you want opinion-type popular-press booksthat support "the facts" and thus really do give good advice, Ihighly recommend"If I'm So Wonderful, Why Am I Still Single?"by Susan Page, as well as "How to Find the Love of Your Life," byBen Dominitz, "The Rules," by Ellen Fein and Sherrie Schneider[note: "The Rules" are for women only], and "Mars and Venuson a Date," by John Gray.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Understand your own intimate relationships better!
Confused about your conflicts with your significant other?Do you want to find out why people are attracted to some people but not others?Reading this book for my sociology class in college allowed me to better comprehend my own relationships. The book collects together social psychological research on intimate relationships, discussing such topics as attraction, sexuality, power, conflict, loneliness, and relationship development.Unlike other non-scholarly books written about relationships, this text is based on studies published by psychologists.Their conclusions can help you better understand your own relationships, but of course each individual person may differ from what sociologists generally conclude about human beings.Even though this book was written for psychology courses, the text is not too difficult to understand. This book is extremely interesting, and I highly recommend it to anyone who has been, wants to be, or is currently in a relationship - which is, basically, everyone ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A real contribution to exec development
I bought this book after seeing Dick Kilburg present at an annual conference. I was impressed by his intellectual rigor, considerable knowledge, and ability to hold it all together. So I picked up Executive Wisdom for the plane ride home. What a rewarding read! I hadn't thought of the centrality of wisdom in leadership before; but as Kilburg laid it out, there it was, right before us all along.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wise and Profound Reflection on American Culture
This is a brilliant, deeply thoughtful, open-hearted book, one of the ten or twelve most important studies we have so far of the culture of the United States. Those who take the time and make the effort to read it carefully will learn a lot not only about American history and society, but also about their own private thoughts and fantasies and the background assumptions of their everyday lives. The dismal state of American education is the main thing you can learn about in most of these reviews. This book has limitations. The most obvious: it's about white/Anglo middleclass Americans. But the only sensible response to the book is still gratitude. If you haven't read it, read it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Read along with Stout's response to the book
I think Steve Seim's review is excellent. The book is a famous statement of an editorial point of view, namely the communitarian claim that individualism has led to the incoherence of Americans' religious and moral claims. But like so many books, the authors dissemble to pretend they're scientifically reporting objective news rather than a kind of editorial. In this sense, the book is not substantially different from the kind of pseudo-science we've come to expect from sociologists, who, after conducting some interviews and handing out some loaded surveys, tell us "what's really going on" with the "modern American woman" or "Generation X" or, in this case, the "modern [misguided] liberal American." I, for one, view such work as social criticism vital to our society, and it makes thoughtful reading, but it is not scientific, and I wish we could get beyond this need to justify such claims with "scientific" surveys.
5-0 out of 5 stars Sorting It All Out
HABITS OF THE HEART is a tour de force whose insights into America are as relevant today as they were nearly twenty years ago when the book was published. It was hailed at that time as an instant classic of sociology, and compared to such influential works as MIDDLETOWN and THE LONELY CROWD.If anything, its insights are even more pertinent now. 5-0 out of 5 stars Thought Provoking and Wise
This book resonates truth like no other marriage book I've read (and I've read many).Marriages haven't worked in our culture because we have made feelings the primary judge of their quality. How liberating it is to realize that marriage is so much bigger, so much more valuable than any fickle feelings either individual might have. This book has completely changed my perspective and my marriage.I recommend this book to anyone who loves his/her spouse but feels generally unfulfilled or disappointed with marriage.

2-0 out of 5 stars Down to earth good sense
The is the only book I've seen where somebody admits that character counts in marriage and that love is sustained by working on meaningful projects--like parenting, for example--together. His angle is refreshingly subversive in a culture where most therapists discuss negotiating rights and communication skills. All that is good, but this book brings out the basics that are not fashionable to mention. Dr Fowers is the kind of guy I wish lived nearby; he comes across warm, humble and smart.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Less Romantic, More Functional Angle
This is the first relationship book I've read that approaches the popular view of marriage as cultural myth. Our myth says that two people meet, "fall in love", then marry based on this feeling, and with the anticipation of marriage being basically a happy extension of dating, forever. With this unrealistic view of marriage, it's not surprising so few marriages last.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Changed my life
This is the most amazing book I have ever stumbled across. It not only gave me a new perspective on love and relationships but I was able to incorporate the logic of it into all areas of my life.I've recommended it to friends left and right. This is definitely a must read.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Saved My Marriage!
Before we found this book, my husband and I were highly discourgaged and didn't think there were any solutions to repair our miserable relationship. All I can say is that this book finally stopped us from resenting and blaming each other for the crumbling of our marriage. I had seen Dr. Bernstein on the Today Show a while ago when they had a segment on toxic relationships and I remembered the title, Why Can't You Read My Mind? This book helped us to understand and appreciate each other in ways we never have before. I only wish that I had bought it before our relationship got so bad.My advice is don't wait till the 11th hour to read this outstanding book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best relationship book I've read
I buy far too many self help books but this one was the most practical and eye opening regarding how one can develop destructive patterns of relating to your partner (or anyone, for that matter) and how perception plays a key role in all of negative and irrational behavior. He give practical methods for countering these irrational thoughts and thus have a better relationship with both your partner and yourself. I really needed this book and feel it may lead me to finally have a successful relationship leading to a happy marriage. My irrational thoughts and behavior have so often sabotaged me in my relationships up to this point. I highly recommend this book! ... Read more

Brett Pelham does a phenomenal job of bringing excitement and life to a subject matter many students and psychologists deem boring-research and research methodology. In his easy-to-read book, Brett brings comedy toconfounding variables, t-scores, and placebo effects.Throughout the book,he backs up his explanation of research terms by using clear, but wittyillustrations.Brett was my professor at UCLA and he used this book forhis Psychology Research and Methodology course.A class I had beendreading was made alive, interesting, and easy to understand, not onlythrough his lectures, but through this book!If you are a psychologyteacher, a student struggling to fully grasp reasearch methods, or just aperson who enjoys reading well written, easy to read books, with a comedickick, then this is a great book for you!It will not only change the wayyou view methodology/research, but heighten your understanding of thetopic. ... This book is very informative on the differences in the current spectrum of views on psychology. It gives an in depth analysis on how these views affect different women of color. Some may try to call this a self help book, but I would think of it as more as trying to let some women know they are not alone in their struggles of migration and changing family views and roles. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Ahead of its time
Dan Wile's book is one of the few really good books written about couples therapy. He offers thoughtful, cogent critiques of pre-existing models, (what he refers to as) depth analytic, behavioral, and systems frameworks. As the book was written in the early '80s, these critiques are somewhat dated, especially those referring to systems theory.A lot has developed in the last 20 years in the realm of systemic therapy, moving it more in the direction of collaboration then in the past. What impressed me about Wile's work was how ahead of time he was in presenting a collaborative model. What I find somewhat off-putting is his use of the term ego-analytic to describe what he does.On the whole, I think what he does is to carefully and respectfully unpack the experience of each member of the couple and help to shift them from stuck, adversarial or avoidant positions, into one of joint, collaborative interest in the betterment of their relationship. In many ways he predates narrative therapy and the work of Anderson/Goolishian.I found the book immediately useful and plan to use it in my teaching at the medical center.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perhaps the finest book on couple's therapy.
According to John Gottman, the prominent researcher and writer on couple's therapy, Dan Wile is "a genuis and the greatest living marital therapist."This classic book on couple's therapy, critiques each ofthe popular approaches to couple's therapy, then takes the best from eachwithout losing depth.Indeed, he suggests an approach to working withcouple's which takes the therapist out of the adversarial stance and intothe position of ally, thus, enhancing the process. His writing is lucid andthoughtful, with lots of examples.I have recommended this book tocountless graduate students and experienced therapists... all have found itto be brilliant, some going so far as to say it altered their entireapproach to couple's work.A must read for marital and couple's therapistof any theoretical orientation. As a professor and therapist myself, Irecommend this book highly. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars ABUSING ANTI-SEMITISM
In the 1980s, Ostow led a group of psychologists in a study that examined the causes of anti-Semitism. Reviewing the case histories of patients, the group found that negative feelings toward Jews could be traced to early childhood, The New York Times reported. They suggested that troubles in toilet training or an Oedipal rivalry, in which a son's negative feelings toward his father could be projected onto Jews, could be the cause.
4-0 out of 5 stars Book is fair and insightful
This is one of only a few book I've read that is fair when looking at all aspects of antisemitism and theories about its cause. The book is not moralistic nor judgemental against antisemites, but instead looks at it compassionately, yet impassionately. The reason that I bought this book is because it is one of only a few written since the second world war that discusses Sigmond Freud's theory of antisemitism being caused by the equation of Jewish circumcision with castration -- something he believed was intrinsically feared. In general this book treats antisemitism as psychodynamically driven, rather than socailly driven. The text of the book really speaks to me. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great way to Learn Social Psychology!
I found this book to not only be informative but I loved the way the author weaved in the examples of each topic and made it easier to relate to what was being discussed. I am a very visual learner and most textbooks are dry and uninteresting to read, but with this textbook the examples given allowed the lay person to relate to what the discussion was about and therefore learn from it.

James Moore is a well-known Methodist Minister who is in Houston, Tex. now. When we knew him, he lived in Shreveport, LA. He's an excellent preacher, and his books reflect his common touch. His writing makes aperson feel she is in the room talking to him. He uses ordinary stories toreflect God's love and care for all of us.This particular book reminds usof the importance of gratitude, compassion, joy and open-mindedness. Heuses scripture and personal experience to bring the Bible to life. Any ofhis books would be well worth reading. I think I've read them all. I highlyrecommend his writing to anyone who enjoys reading good books. ... Read more

A friend gave me a copy of this book more than 10 years ago and I keep "losing" my copy to friends. The book is full of wisdom and is wonderfully written.I probably have read the book a half a dozen times and have read selected passages more than a few dozen times! The "Achievement" section has been particularly valuable for me.

I recommend that everyone read this fine collection of meditations on the practical use of time in daily living.
5-0 out of 5 stars stimulating
This book reminds me of ancient moral philosophy. It's intelligent thinking about life, with a practical emphasis: how to enjoy your life and live well. It's quite thoughtful and original, yet not systematic at all, usually overconfident (kind of forcedly profound), and occasionally even ridiculous. But always relevant and stimulating.
