3-0 out of 5 stars Professional text with unprofessional commentary
Having majors in both the natural and social sciences, I can honestly say this is a very unprofessionally written text for just a single reason. There are constant, in-text, one-sided diatribes between the "first author" and the "third author." The third author is the ever-lovable Lois Fichner-Rathus who is married to the first author. The problem is that this woman takes numerous opportunities to slam males and masculinity throughout the text (without any similar asides from the male authors).

This book was origionally published as 'The Love Keys: The Art of Ecstatic Sex'.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Books Around on Tantra
Some tantra guides seem very clinical. They just lay out the dance steps in little rubber footprints on the floor. This author really feels like she's speaking from a very deep personal journey. She shares her heart and soul as well as her intimate knowledge of how bodies work. I appreciated the many specific insights she offered, both technical and emotional. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to put the principles of tantra into practice and succeed. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent explanation
This book does an excellent explanation of exactly how I felt toward my mother, and helped me to start to release my victimized perception of myself regarding her. The philosophies about hurting nature as a result of my mom seemed quite out of place, everywhere they were mentioned, but nearly everything else was well placed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Yes, it has some hyperbole and a pop psychology feel but it is still thought-provoking
Having just used the "Search Inside the Book" feature on Amazon to look at parts of another of Gurian's books (about choosing movies and books for boys and teens), I used it again to get a feel for this book. It convinced me to buy it, just as it convinced me NOT to buy that other book.
5-0 out of 5 stars "I'm very close to my mother."
Would it not seem common sense self preservation to politely run not walk in the other direction from any man who wants you to know this about him right off the bat?Mother-bound men in literature and film from Oedipus to Norman Bates -- and every sentimental serial killer with a picture of his mother on his nightstand in between -- have yet to teach even 21st Century women the hard lessons in steering clear of this terrible spidermother tragedy.Should have long been a classic in popular psychology; recommended. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Part auto-biography - part romance guide
There are a lot of antedotes of Jane Seymour's life in this book that emphasize the point she's trying to make on how to keep romance in your life. And this is not only for your significant other but for yourself and your children as well.Lots of tips on how to keep it fresh and new and some interesting insights into her life and work from the stories that she tells.Nothing really earthshaking but an enjoyable read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for Couples
I got this book for my husband as an anniversary gift.We love giving each other massage, so I thought he might like a book that was easy to understand so we could both develop new teqniques. We both are learning a lot, and we've learned a lot that has helped our marriage.

Let's be honest: a well done sensual massaage is one of the ultimate turn-ons. Here it all is, laid out for you in black and white (color in the DVD). Stroke-by-stroke these are the tecniques you need to know to drive your lover wild. And this is hardly an exaggeration. I have seen it work wonders.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not quite what I was looking for
While I was looking for a good beginners type of book, I found this to be a little TOO basic.I really didn't learn anything inspirational or get any new ideas to try out.
4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent beginner's guide
For all those ladies who have wanted to delve into dominance, this is an excellent place to start understanding the headspace behind it. The book will assist you in mapping out what female dominants are,do and how to begin. Highly suggested for those just starting out. well written and illustrated with wonderful cartoons along the way.

2-0 out of 5 stars Gotta be Cruel to be Kind....

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth a Read
When I first encountered this book, and read the summary/reviews on Amazon, I dismissed it as another wacky 'erection' book.Later on, after reading a few pages in a local bookstore, I bought a copy.I've now completely changed my mind. It's worth reading.Even if you don't follow his exact plan line by line, you'll have to do some variant of every step of his plan to restore your erection to its best- so read it, for a template plan, if nothing else.

5-0 out of 5 stars I seriously couldn't put this book down
I work at a feminist sex-positive boutique in Denver, Colorado called Hysteria [...] and was put in contact with Sara Katherine Lewis' publicist after we had Annie Sprinkle here for a book signing and some other community events. 'Indecent' was sent to me with the idea that perhaps we would have Lewis come to Hysteria to do a book signing. When I received the book I really did not know what to expect, and I actually began reading the book not expecting to connect with it (I'm not even sure why). But from the moment I opened the book to the moment I finished it (a mere few days later), I was entranced. The subject matter is obviously of particular interest to me, but even if it hadn't been I think my reaction would have been the same. 'Indecent' is smart, honest and important. It's important because the ideas that Lewis exploresare at the crux of sexuality, society, repression, gender roles and how those concepts shape and affect men and women- whether they are in the sex industry or not. And everything else aside, Lewis is an incredible writer. I think she could write about anything and make it fun, interesting, witty and thought-provoking. She's a natural. The way certain scenes are described I literally felt like I was there; smelling the same smells, feeling the same emotions, touching the same things. You can't really teach the natural flow this book has- someone either has it or they don't. Needless to say, I hope Lewis continues to write and I'm excited to have her come to Denver for a signing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rain and Shiny
Ms Lewis takes us with her on an adventure that many of us would never dare go. Curious and cautious I opened this book. Why? You know why.

3-0 out of 5 stars Only for Beginners
Red Hot Tantra does not live up to my expectations. It consists of a decent title, followed by a story, then some attempt to explain what to do. This book does not give enough credit to tantra itself, instead focusing on other mundane paths. It's good for beginners, but any intermediate or expert will find this boring. Buy "Tantra: The Art of Conscious Living" by Charles Muir instead

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Before Bed
Not sure why this book got any bad reviews, has more than its share of new and fun ideas for couples and singles. Many books on tantra focus on the male experience, this one is more egalitarian in its approach. Builds from some very basic technique to some highly advanced and acrobatic moves with some short erotic stories as, well, foreplay. Also explores deep meditative breathing as pathway to orgasm which really really works if you follow the technique in the book, well worked for me anyway;) Read a chapter a night, act it out, and be happy :)

1-0 out of 5 stars red hot tantra? not hardly, more like cold oatmeal erotica
I don't know what happened between the author's intentions and the end result but this book has little or nothing to do with tantra, red hot or otherwise. It consists mainly of lame, pedestrian, badly written erotica followed by short chapters explaining why the erotica is/was erotic and how one might incorporate some elements of the fiction into one's real sex life. Fine: if you're the kind of person who has never before thought of reading erotica, but not so fine if you're a reasonably liberal, sexually educated adult who is trying to incorporate real tantric practices in your married sex life. I guess if you've been living in a hyper religious ultra conservative community and your parents never had the "talk" with you then just the fact that you're reading about people having SEX might be red hot; but for the rest of us, not so much. I wish I had read this book thoroughly before the 30 day return period had expired. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Relationship Advice for People into S&M and D/s
Mr. Baldwin's book is a wonderful collection of very well written and accessible essays covering the interpersonal aspects of the S&M scene. Guy Baldwin is both a psychotherapist and an experienced S&M practitioner. While the essays were originally written for a gay male S&M magazine, it's easy for women and heterosexual men to read past the pronouns and benefit from his insights. It's one of those books you want to share with your (kinky) friends as soon as you've finished reading it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Reading for the Human Community
The subtitle for this amazing and long overdue anthology is "True Tales of Sex & Gender Diversity", which pretty well sums up what the book is about. There have been many anthologies published over the years that deal with a range of different issues, but Finding the Real Me is the first volume to tackle the complexities of gender diversity.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Dated, but still a great read
"Brain Gender" would have been a more apropos title, but I suppose 'sex' sells, literally.
5-0 out of 5 stars Biological Strength and Weakness
Recognizing that men and women are different has never been the problem of humankind. Genetically, we were always predisposed to ascertaining the difference, by hormones, if by nothing else. What mankind does with that knowledge, and how he or she pursues the ideological ideal has been the perpetual distinction of whether mankind is strong or weak, by the actions of every individual in being confronted with that reality, just as it is in the area of race relations, ethnic relations, or in the very distinction of recognizing humans as different from plants and animals. The history written illustrates not only our internal strength of character, or its weakness, but also reveals priorities, methods, and sense of justice, including our propensity to indulge while others suffer under known facts and attitudes as well as their inclination to further explore the truths yet uncovered. To the extent that such an inquiry reveals the extent of our humanity is socially and politically everyone's business, and perhaps, everyone's obligation. The report card to date has been less than admirable for any of us, given the intellectual protocol by which we tend to measure excellence in anything else. The pretense shows and tends to reflect badly upon all of us, the few ridiculed purists, excepted, of course.

5-0 out of 5 stars People fear the truth of this book!
This book is a must-read for anyone interested in truth. However, it does not necessarily contain a pleasant truth (neither to men nor women). The amount of fear stemming from this book is not to be unexpected. It does, after all, deal with one of the most controversial subjects you can find. Just reading over the reviews here after reading the book for yourself will reveal the amount of paranoia associated with the knowledge contained.

Editorial Review

For centuries, women diagnosed with "hysteria"--a "disease paradigm," in Rachel P. Maines's felicitous phrase, thought to result from a lack of sexual intercourse or gratification--were treated by massaging their genitals in order to induce "paroxysm." Male physicians, however, considered the practice drudgery, and sought various ways of avoiding the task, often foisting it off on midwives or, starting in the late 19th century, employing mechanical devices. Eventually, these devices became available for purchase and home use; one such "portable vibrator" is advertised in the 1918 Sears, Roebuck catalog as an "aid that every woman appreciates." 5-0 out of 5 stars An eye-opener.Hard-hitting and wryly humorous.
Here's the rub.For millennia, physicians (or their assistants or midwives) have been masturbating female patients to orgasm. The practice was wide-spread and well-documented throughout the history of Western medicine. In this fascinating and well-researched book, the author presents examples spanning ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome; Medieval, Renaissance, and Victorian times; up through early 20th-century Europe and America.Confronted with this, the first question that might naturally spring to mind is: Why?Followed closely by: How did they justify or rationalize it?

This book is utterly fascinating!Written by a woman who's really done her homework on the subject, The Technology of Orgasm proves to be a captivating historical account of the evolution of society's perceptions of women's sexuality. It's a must-read for a woman who's confident in her sexuality, or would like to become more so.

4-0 out of 5 stars hysteric paroxysm
for centuries, troubled -- or troubling -- women were diagnosed with "hysteria." the classic treatment for this vague malady was inducement of the "hysteric paroxysm" -- known to us contemporary types as the orgasm. according to rachel maines's wryly hilarious history, the first mechanical vibrators were labor-saving devices for doctors tired of inducing orgasm in their patients manually. who knew? this book is clearly her dissertation & primarily intended for academics, but i found it mind-blowing & frequently quite amusing. i frequently recommend it to friends & colleagues looking for a quick, smart, engaging read. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Interesting Tests, Not Insightful Results
This book has some interesting tests to take-- how romantic are you?How much do you know about Sex?How aggressive are you?
4-0 out of 5 stars If you LOVE tests.... this might be fun!
For many years I have enjoyed (and studied, to some degree) personality and psychological tests of various kinds. If you like the idea of getting a whole batch of different psychology tests in ONE book-- rather than having to buy a separate book for EACH test-- then this may be the book for you.1-0 out of 5 stars Not very informative
This book lacks insight and details. After a given test the author gives you his personal view of the test you just took but doesn't give you an interpretaion of your score results. For instance, who cares if you came in the 85th percentile on the "How Romantic Are You?" test when the author fails to point out whether that means that you are an extreme romantic or an extreme nonromatic. Or if that's a good thing or not. I would not recommend this book to anyone looking to learn more about themselves. The book is mostly fluff with no meat. ... Read more
