5-0 out of 5 stars An Impassioned Plea for More Pluralism and More Fun
C. S. Lewis had his own restrictive views of what Christianity had to say about morality, but he objected to those Christians who thought that the chief sphere governed by morality was sexuality, and he objected to the prejudice that anything having to do with sex was automatically wrong."I know some muddle-headed Christians have talked as if Christianity thought that sex, or the body, or pleasure, were bad in themselves," he wrote in _Mere Christianity_.He could not have predicted that in the richest and most powerful country in the world, members of that camp should have become so influential, and are condemning anything but a narrow range of sexual activity within marriage. This sexual tyranny is the subject of _America's War on Sex: The Attack on Law, Lust, and Liberty_ (Praeger) by Marty Klein. The author is a marital and sex therapist, and anyone who knows his fine blog _Sexual Intelligence_ will be familiar with his themes in this book, but the ideas here are forceful, broad, and referenced, with various battlefields summarized.Though Klein's writing is often amused and upbeat, much of what he has to report is dismal, a slope sliding into sexual ignorance and intolerance.Religious conservatives may be rejoicing, but as sexual pluralism is rejected in favor of a single morality and reduction of anxiety, we risk what we value most about democracy.

I disagree with the previous review, although I agree that this is an excellent book.Personally, I was glad to have studied Irigaray under the tutelage of an excellent professor, otherwise I would have, and I think many readers could, misread her drastically.Irigaray is simply not a clear and easy writer.

A must read for those interested in Femenist Theory.Travelling across Freudian and Lacanian perspectives, this book seriously explains, with accesible language, the female sexuality. It simply expresses verydifficult theories, and guides the reader with accesible terminology fromthe outset. In my opinion, after reading this text, one can be said to befluent in femenist issues. I also think it is an extraordinary and seamlesstranslation. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Tired of all those confusing opinions about your love life?
Sharon S. Brehm is a respected social psychologist who has composed a witty, fun, and insightful tome regarding the many fascinating contributions her field has made to the study of love relationships. Popular press books may or may not offer valid advice--they aren't relyingon scientific research, but rather on opinions (which often conflict withthe opinions found in still other books).Brehm offers her readersinformation that is reliable and valid, and perhaps most importantly, useful.Better still, her book is equally applicable for men and women. As a psychology professor and a consultant for individuals seeking theirlife mate, I read and use many books--texts and popular press--on thisissue.Brehm's book is among my most trusted resources, and it givesreaders the best of all worlds: excellent and engaging writing that iseasily understood, information that is eminently useful, and solid researchevidence rather than opinion alone.Should you live together?Doesmarriage really make people happier than if they had remained single?Whatattracts romantic partners? If you want "just the facts," thisis the place to go for them.(If you want opinion-type popular-press booksthat support "the facts" and thus really do give good advice, Ihighly recommend"If I'm So Wonderful, Why Am I Still Single?"by Susan Page, as well as "How to Find the Love of Your Life," byBen Dominitz, "The Rules," by Ellen Fein and Sherrie Schneider[note: "The Rules" are for women only], and "Mars and Venuson a Date," by John Gray.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Understand your own intimate relationships better!
Confused about your conflicts with your significant other?Do you want to find out why people are attracted to some people but not others?Reading this book for my sociology class in college allowed me to better comprehend my own relationships. The book collects together social psychological research on intimate relationships, discussing such topics as attraction, sexuality, power, conflict, loneliness, and relationship development.Unlike other non-scholarly books written about relationships, this text is based on studies published by psychologists.Their conclusions can help you better understand your own relationships, but of course each individual person may differ from what sociologists generally conclude about human beings.Even though this book was written for psychology courses, the text is not too difficult to understand. This book is extremely interesting, and I highly recommend it to anyone who has been, wants to be, or is currently in a relationship - which is, basically, everyone ... 2-0 out of 5 stars A book with to many numbers and figures
I bought this book to learn some interisting new facts that I have not heard about before. Well this book didn't do that. Most of the stuff in this book I have read in other places and it was written better. Like The "Red Queen" by Matt Ridley & "Why is Sex Fun" by Jarod Diamond.
5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, if dense, review of human behavior
Basically, I'm of much the same opinion as most of the other reviewers. It's a thoroughly fascinating book, which actually looks at human behavior as it should be seen: the ecology and interactions of highly inteligent, highly communicate, mostly bald apes.Well worth the read. That said, I must say that without at least some background knowledge in evolutionary biology, you'll find it tough to digest. But such is the way of scientific works, and, frankly, I prefer it as is, rather than loaded down with explanations of things I already know from my classes.2-0 out of 5 stars Falls Short
This topic is extremely complex and professor Low , in my opinion, falls short of further elucidating this field. It's breadth is impressive and stimulated me to pick up the book, however, it doesn't seem to be researched comprehensively. There were several significant omissions. For example, the "group selection muddle" is only a problem for biologists who fail to understand group selection. I admit, alot of prominent biologists don't get it, however, any valid review of the topic should reference David Wilson and Elliot Sober. Also, Low should add that Charles Darwin accepted group selection as an evolutionary mechanism. Another example involves the gender and war section. Again, Low knows more about this subject than most biologists, however, the field of military psychology encompasses more than Clauswitz and Keegan.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful perspective that sticks to the ribs
This book has staying power. Because it comes at the reader with disarming visuals and humor, it is accessible to couples in a way that other accounts of the pursuer-distancer relationship are not. While it deals primarily with this dynamic (pursuer-distancer), there is some of nearly everyone in the antics depicted in the illustrations. I recommend this book for those struggling to get what they want in an intimate relationship.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Two Step: The DanceToward Intimacy
This book is funny, risque, and amazingly profound. I couldn't put it down. I could see every relationship I ever had, with my parents, my children, my friends, in a clearer way. I loved it and gave it as a Xmas presents.

4-0 out of 5 stars Gut Level Connection
This comical picture book captures so much about how we try to connect intimately, and then defeat our efforts. I thought it was great. Better yet, my husband, who really doesn't "get it" when you talk about or read about intimacy, said he LOVED THIS BOOK. He read it cover to cover, and said he really identified with the messages. He still can't articulate what he learned, but I believe something sank in at the gut level. Now, that's worth the price of the book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A fascinating and enjoyable book
The reviews for this book are very mixed, and perhaps if I were a scientist I might be a little harsh too. As someone with zero scientific training but a strong interest in human relations, I found the book fascinating, easy to follow and fun to read. I think that the author did a great job of introducing interesting ideas in manner that anyone can grasp. I can really recommend one of her other books too, Why we love.

5-0 out of 5 stars Why One Can't Fight With Evolutionary History
We are wired for the thing that humans call love ... which is really a form of mania, psychosis, emotional turbulence, and all unsettling points in between. The cocktails of the emotional high ... characteristic of the first flush of romance..limerance .... heady infatuation ... romantic attraction ... and all the resulting poor judgement ... almost explain why marriage is a precarious proposition. True love in some instances may exist but in most cases it is rare. No wonder the white picket fence is really just a nicer form of prison barbed wire.

5-0 out of 5 stars Intriguing Read
I was intrigued by the topic, cover, and title for Dr. Fisher's Anatomy of Love. From the start I was interested. I was especially drawn-in after the first chapter where "the gaze" is discussed as the "most striking human courting play." The Anatomy of Love is a detailed account of human attraction; the book attempts to explain why humans mate, marry, and stray; citing both conjectural, biological and literately evidence. Four pages into the book and the reader discovers a table of contents with such titles as "Why Adultery", "Eros", and "Fickle Passion"; any reader would have to be at least intrigued. And so confirms the theme of the book. Biology plays a role, a fundamental role, in human attraction, marriage, and even divorce. This book is not designed for those who believe solely in fate; it is not designed for romance novel readers. Dr. Fisher presents a persuasive explanation for the purpose of human attraction devoid of political correctness. She provides surprising facts, "most people think men are supposed to take the initiative in sexual advances, in practice women around the world actively begin sexual liaisons." Dr. Fisher presents an interesting, research-based account of sex and relationships, allowing the readers to decide if they believe the research.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent information on sex and relationships
The Kama Sutra has a huge reputation based on only one of its five sections. The positions would be Part 2 and only one chapter of the ten in that section. Most books with Kama Sutra in the title are just going to be some porn structured around that chapter. The entire book is not so much useful in describing the physics of sex as for describing the psychology of sex.(It is good for physical stuff too.At one point it gives a method to get to the G-spot with the fingers, so I have to give Indian medicine props there.)
1-0 out of 5 stars Inept adaptation

5-0 out of 5 stars If a hysteric patient is leaving you muddled..
This is the book to consult. rich, complex. and best savored in small, delicate bites, Bollas offers some insights about hysterics you simply won't find anywhere else. For example, he delineates the intricacies of exactly why the hysteric tries to find him-herself in the desire of the other. Bollas also explains why the hysteric eschews the physical and the sexual( the mother denied the infant's body). Further, Bollas makes such lucid sense of the hysteric's array of physical maladies. (She is offering her body to medical professionals to care for, attend, touch, and love, the way her mother never did.)5-0 out of 5 stars Wow!
Goodness! Reading this book, I can't help but wonder how we've gotten along without it for so long, or for as long as hysteria as a working clinical-theoretical construct has been banished from our vernacular.Bollas depicts with great creativity and clarity just what hysteria is, and gives us a working sense of how to differentiate it from other psychic structures, especially the borderline, with which it has most commonly been misunderstood.True to classical and object relations thinking, the author also extends our understanding of this most complex patient. His differential descriptions of various structures is done through not only what the patient struggles with, but also how both the transference and the countertransference vary.A must-read! for any psychotherapist serious about working the depths of our patients. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars sex & gender
Sexing the Body is a thick book, and an important one. The section of footnotes is nearly as long as the text of the book (which can be complicated when reading; I ended up using two bookmarks). That said, it covers the part of the conversation that most of us don't have when we talk about the difference between sex and gender. I have a friend who reads my stuff - she's a feminist, and smart. But whenever I say that we don't really know if there are only two sexes, she always writes "you mean genders here?" in the margin. But no, I mean sex. I mean XX or XY. Or "with penis" or "with clitoris." And that's exactly what Anne Fausto-Sterling covers in this book: how we came to decide that there are two sexes, how (through the times) science came to that standard, and why it's wrong and when it's wrong.

4-0 out of 5 stars The science of gender
This book is covers the science and politics of gender in areadable language. Fausto-Sterling examines biological experiments on lab animals as well as the history behind our concepts of male and female. She describes gender as an "interaction between small groups of people...[that] involves institutional rules."
3-0 out of 5 stars Gender seen from a particular perspective
As a transgendered person who is trying to read as much information as possible about gender, this book does supply alot of historic, scientific and theoretical background. It is another important addition to my library. That being said, I was taken aback by her comments regarding transexuals on pp 253 as a "type of human" and "stereotypical member of their sex to be".If I misunderstood the inference, I apologize. If not, I am greatly offended and wonder why marginalizing my existence supports yours. Read Judith Butler as a comparison to this work. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Splendid Read and Fascinating History
More than the scandalous relationships of royal women, this delightful book offers insight into the often dreary lives of royal wombs. No wonder queens looked beyond their impotent, idiot kings for some kind of life. They risked everything in the exciting and dangerous game and lost more than they won. Great read, great insight and wonderfully written.

5-0 out of 5 stars What's good for the gander is good for the goose
At last year's Renaissance Faire, my mother heard a woman talking about her forthcoming book, "Sex With The Queen." Since I adored Eleanor Herman's "Sex With Kings," I spent a good ten minutes jumping around because she hadn't told me at the Faire, and then settled down to wait for the second book of royal love lives.

I would definitely reccomment this book to anyone who has been lied to and decieved by a loved one.I read this two weeks after I found out my fiance had been cheating on me for 2 1/2 years.Although I chose to end it, it helped me sort out alot of the chaos in my mind.

5-0 out of 5 stars This books tells it like it is!
I was recently dumped by a pathological liar who lied about EVERY aspect of his life.Although it still hurts, I know I'm much better off. This book really clarified for me the "little white lies" compared to the whoppers that can affect everything in your life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Telling It Like it is Heals the Hurt, Strengthens the Weak
When your gut is telling you one thing and he is telling you another, the confusion literally weakens your mental powers and makes you doubt yourself. You slow down at work, your creative powers diminish, your lust for life fades and you suffer all the effects of emotional abuse. Betrayal, just one of the types of lying discussed in this book, is one of the most damaging forms of emotional abuse there is.

5-0 out of 5 stars Erotic workbook is a helpful read
I finally got my hands on a copy of this book. It was well worth the wait. I think it has some very good exercises in it for learning to notice the small details in pleasing your Master. It was an easy read, and not a book that I will be willing to part with anytime soon if ever. It is written in a Mistress tone and if you can overcome that you will be able to enjoy this book. I had hoped it would cover more of the discipline aspects in training slaves but it is still a great book.

If you're a Dominant with little or no regard for your property, this is a great book.If you're a Dominant who thinks like every other Dominant on the planet, and has the exact same tastes as every other Dominant (snicker), then this is a great book.4-0 out of 5 stars Really worth 4.5 stars
I can't give the second of this two part series 5 stars because there are some problems and cautions I feel need to be shared first. This second book by Miss Abernathy is set out as a series of lessons to be undertaken (ideally) by a wouldbe erotic slave and an owner or trainer. However, the order of the chapters is a bit odd at times so when I use it I assign lessons in an order which makes better sense to me.Likewise I do not agree with every idea or exercise so I use those lessons to get discussion going or just ignore them. The book is great because it is divided into general training then more advanced or specialized types of erotic slavery.A book for the very serious Ds relationships...Just don't think you have to use the book as it is written and it will serve you much better. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Treasure Map for Sexual Intimacy and Fulfillment
In "Pleasure", Dr. Hilda Hutcherson approaches the topic of female sexuality from a lighter, more personal and fun-friendly perspective than she did in "What Your Mother Never Told You about S-E-X".In "S-E-X", the reader is like a new patient engaging in a reassuring and open conversation with her well-chosen and nurturing gynecologist.By the time we get to "Pleasure" the doctor-patient relationship has grown significantly more personal and trusting, and the topics addressed take on a whole new level of intimacy.

5-0 out of 5 stars informative and well compiled
I must admit that I never heard about Kinsey and Kinsey Institute before watching the movie. At first I was intrigued by topics listed in table of contest and decided to buy the book. To my great surprise I got much more and I really mean a much more that I expected. Sex is always considered taboo and I think that is a very bad thing and this book will show you why. Just to give you small example. I heard thing that you can use Cola or any soda drink for douching, and in this book you learn not only that this is ineffective but even deadly !!!

Editorial Review

"Turning 50 can be one of the most powerful and positive sexual passages in a man's life," writes Barbara Keesling, a sexuality and psychotherapy educator. However, "the focus has to be on lovemaking, not erections--on partnership, not performance." After 50, men's sexual response is affected by the "Big 5": stimulation, circulation, lubrication, stress, and sleep.Keesling teaches women (and men) how to understand how the "Big 5" affect sex, and specifically what to do about each of them. For example, anything that affects blood flow affects erections: temperature, time after eating, position, friction, gravity, and illness, to name just a few.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Reading
'All Night Long: How to Make Love to a Man over 50' is a sensitive, well written book filled with practical advice. After I'd read it, I felt compelled to share it, so I sent a copy to my friend and 'Twins' co-star, Danny DeVito. I knew he'd been experiencing off-stage performance problems so I figured the book would get him a long-overdue standing ovation. The following day he sent me this email:5-0 out of 5 stars All Night Long from the guy's view
As a man over 50 this is great stuff to read for yourself.Give it to your wife when you are done, but read it yourself first, there is much good stuff to learn here about being a man and being over 50.Very good physiological information, some health & reality checks, a little technique.

A very interesting read. This book will allow you to enter what some see as the mirky world of sado-masochism safely. Communication is key - especially in China.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully Done!!
Written by two long time members of the SM community, Consensual Sadomasochism offers a great "intro" to consensual power exchange play. The authors display a considerable breadth of knowledge and a wonderfully tolerant and open attitude toward all forms of BDSM play. The book is easy to read and follow and covers SM "basics," including fundamental concepts like safe words, limits, negotiation, and consent. The book contains good, if somewhat limited, descriptions of basic SM play (bondage, spanking, clamps, etc). There is also a good section on finding partners and how to find the SM community, along with a bibliography.5-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully Done!!

This book sets out to explore why and when people evolved so far away from other mammals in several key ways, all of which Dr. Shlain ties to the biological differences between men and women. As in his excellent prior work Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Exquisite
Shlain's writing is dense with information and intense thought as well as being extremely elegant and humorous. He's the best writer of non fiction I've read in years, and Ifeel I will be forever reeling from his far reaching implications and conclusions. If you have any interest (or any stake) at all in the challenges of the relationship between women and men on this planet, it's a MUST read. While many other authors explain the exterior by way of the interior, Shlain is a master of dissecting our nature as humans, who walk, breathe, hunt, mate, and give birth, and the social, cultural, behavioral, and intentional implications of these miracles.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read
The text is among the most interesting interpretations of gender and sexuality from the perspective of the theory of evolution. It contributes new material to the old nature-nurture controversy on the subject. I assigned this book to my undergraduate students as one of ten texts I use for a course in genders and sexualities and students liked it a lot. It is very well written and stimulates a good, intelligent discussion. It works well as an invitation to further studies of gender and sexuality.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Explanation of the Human Body
If you want an informative, descriptive, thorough, and thought provoking book that covers human evolution, this is it.
