Evolutionary psychology has been called the "new black" of science fashion, though at its most controversial, it more resembles the emperor's new clothes. Geoffrey Miller is one of the Young Turks trying to give the phenomenon a better spin. In Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not Bad
Although I'm not too fond of evolutionary psychology (EP), simply because at the moment we can easily explain any psychological characteristic either socially, naturally, or both (each with convincing, but not concrete support), Miller's analysis of sexual selection is at times very intriguing. In particular, his explanation of sexual selections contribution to male/female ornamentation is very compelling.
5-0 out of 5 stars It's all about understanding
Only a true scientist could have written a book like this one. Someone who is knowledgeable enough to know the facts, brilliant enough to come up with a sound theory and courageous enough to stand up for it, even though it follows the lines not very popular for the last century.
5-0 out of 5 stars A rare revelation
Even as I was already used to evolutionary thinking, for me this book was a revelation. Without quite changing my way of seeing human beings, it casted a new light on the matter by convincingly considering sexual selection at the heart of evolution. From this point, all the rest seems to ensue naturally, as usually happens to a theory which is grounded on the right hypothesis; then, it seems that by combining sexual and natural selection, almost all features of almost all living creatures can potentially be understood, not least our own behaviors, even (or especially) the seemingly strangest and least logical ones! The genius who founded the theory was really Charles Darwin, and this is made clear in the book, which is really about developing Darwin's theories in a modern and comprehensive way and with a selfish gene emphasis. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An educational and entertaining book
This book is a great peak in to some aspects of the BDSM world of one Mistress. It shows her journey in a way that most books miss. I trully enjoyed it on several levels.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not quite as "private" as you may expect
First let me say that I was pleasantly surprised by this book.Nan is not the stereotyped femdom you might be thinking of though she can clearly dress up and put on a well-scripted and eleborate scene. The descriptions are not pornographic though they are careful to mention both physical and emotional aspects of the scenes. There are both male and female submissives and bottoms discussed throughout the book, the most extreme scene involve Nana and her primary female lover (she also has a husband). It should stimulate your mind and your groin so be prepared. I would have been better if Nan had gotten more personal -- why she does it, what it feels like to her, how she has changed over time -- as the title suggests.

5-0 out of 5 stars REAL!!!
This is the first book I've ever read that I feel is real. This woman has experienced what she has written about. It is NOT fantasy. She has honed her skills to a point that she is an expert at the exchange of power that is paramount to a BDSM scene. This book isn't all about pain or bondage. This book isn't all about fantasies. This book is about power, control and sensuality. You hear about her feelings while she is doing what she is doing. You hear about what her bottoms are feeling. You learn how she gets into their heads and hearts.I'm amazed at the candor with which she writes. This woman is obviously gifted with an amazing power, and is amazingly generous in sharing it with the public. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Steals From Research, Fails to Credit Sources
As the first reviewer points out, Susan bases her book on SIRC's Guide to Flirting (url=http://www.sirc.org/publik/flirt.html), going so far as to cite statistics at one point. But she never credits this source, nor any other source, essentially stealing others' hard work and content for her own profit.Where the references and resources should be listed at the back of the book, she gives us information on how to order her tapes. How insulting to the researchers who provided the science behind her book, and to the readers who make the mistake of purchasing her book.
5-0 out of 5 stars super flirting book
Susan Rabin has given practical and anecdotal examples of how the art of flirting can enhance one's life. She has appealed to all age groups. I gave this book to my 80 year old cousin who tried out a flirting technique in the supermarket and attracted a man of her own age group. What greater testimony is there than that?

I sometimes work with people who are struggling with codependent behavior or sexual addictions. This is the book I most often recommend and I also think it is a great reference for professionals such as psychologists, personal coaches and psychiatrists.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful and private way to heal yourself from the inside!
Freedom from Relationship/ Co-Dependency/ Sexual Addictions is the greatest asset to this book.I started reading it when my relationship ended with a man I cared for.My bad relationship triggered many unrealistic emotions inside myself that caused me a lot of self damage by acting out and dating guys that were all bad for me because of my low self image since the break-up.

2-0 out of 5 stars Interesting but ulitimately unhelpful book
Several people suggested I read this book because they found it the best book about being a submissive, especially a service oriented one. While reading this book was interesting, I found almost nothing in it that would help me in my relationship with my mistress.
4-0 out of 5 stars An eye opener (and then some)
This book is sure to spice up any couple's flagging sex life. I was going to give it to my significant other to read, but my pet gerbil got jealous and I had to return it to our local junior high school's sex-education library. Have you ever noticed that if you eliminate the x, e, and a from "sex education" that it becomes "seduction?" All I can say is that things have changed since I took sex education in school 35 years ago.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book about Being
If you're looking for a how-to book, this ain't it!However, if you're looking for a book to contribute to and strengthen your own foundation for slaving, you'll be turning the right pages here.I found this book to be very helpful, surprisingly from both the Master and slave perspectives.(I'm a switch, have a slave (of two years) and am now looking to practice deep submission with a particular Sir.)This book gives a good foundation for BEING slave, rather than DOING slave, and it is my belief that effective and natural DOING must be preceeded by strong and confident BEING.It's refreshing to find a book that comes from this approach, even though there are enough tips and practical "how-to" in this read.It was also nice to read a book about slaving written by a slave, who understands the nuances and character of a slave mindset!(This, rather than being written by Masters or scholars who approach slaving from an outsider's perspective, which all too often seems to be the case.)SlaveCraft does not have all the answers (and, really, what book possibly could), and Baldwin acknowledges that its contents is a narrative drawn from personal experience and practices-- not universal -- with hopes that these will be helpful to others.Pat Califia's postlude gives a nice balance to the book as well, though I prefer the author's writing style easier to absorb on a gut level than Mr. Califa's more cerebral syntax (meaning no disrespect). On the whole, this book gives the reader -- both Master and slave alike -- plenty to consider and digest. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A thesis before its time?
Perhaps, considering a 2003 survey published in the Journal of Sex Research that concluded "heterosexuals dislike bisexuals more than gays, lesbians and most religous or enthnic groups," and that women tended to feel negative towards bisexual or gay men and women alike while men were more prone to rate bixsexual or gay men lower than they would bisexual or lesbian women. The earlier "Dual Attraction ..." coincidentally hints of similar findings, but goes significantly further than the more recent survey. Most notably, a distinction is made between the bisexual and gay male although both seem mostly to be lumped together in social and research terms. Maybe because of that, any serious study of bisexuality in particular is sparse. The bisexual male, then, is somewhat "invisible," accounting for the fact that most clinicial and social discussion and advocacy come from the bisexual female. And, consistent with the more recent study, the Indiana University sociologists behind "Dual Attraction ..." also come up with a reason that the bisexual male is apparently regarded beneath the gay male and lesbian and bisexual woman. The bisexual man, unlike the gay male, so the theory goes, is self-focused, preoccupied with sex and so sexually experienced with both genders that he feels superior to all, even the straight man. Add to that the apparent belief that bisexual men gave AIDS to the straight community, and the bisexual's social position plummets. Of course, the conclusions in "Dual Attraction ..." are pre-suppositioned on the hotly disputed Masters and Johnson opinion years earlier that sexual orientation is a choice rather than a biological pre-determinant. Even discarding that idea, however, "Dual Attraction ..." still comes out as something of a pioneering effort in acknowledging the existence and explaining the dynamics behind bisexuality. Perhaps no other published work has gone so far as this research. But is it relevant? Quite possibly, considering various surveys put between 25 percent and 75 percent the number of men in America having sex with other men.

This is, without a doubt, the BEST work I've ever seen on bisexuality. Kudos to Weinberg, Williams, and Pryor. Finally ... someone who understands.

5-0 out of 5 stars D&S:From A-Z or Top to Bottom
I didn't give this 5 stars because it will sit alongside War and Peace on my bookshelf...not that I think Tolstoy would mind.It does deserve praise, however, for helping out an open-minded person who is just beginning to explore the world of D&S.The purpose of the book seems to be to explain the broad world of dominance and submission in a serious-minded way; This isn't erotica. Interesting interviews with practitioners of this lifestyle are included. If any potential readers out there are like me, they were looking for a book that would show that D&S fantasies are no stranger or "unhealthier" than sex limited to the missionary position.I wanted to catch the broadest view of the spectrum of the D&S lifestyle as possible, and I think that the authors succeeded in delivering that. The book includes information about fetishism, transgenderism, as well as other areas that might be considered on the "fringe" of sexual tastes, but they are nonetheless illuminating for anyone who'd like to expand their knowledge of these practices.

4-0 out of 5 stars Intelligently Written Book on an Interesting Sexually Topic
As a switch, I was looking for a couple of good books on BDSM.I purchased Different Loving and Female Domination.Different Loving is without doubt the superior written book. Not only is this book written in an intelligent, engaging style that conveys the truly multifariate components of this lifestyle, but presents the vibrant people involved in these practices as genuinely real and with respect. In contrast, Female Domination casts people into two sharp worlds of the dominant and submissive. All men are submissives and all women are dominant according to Suttons ridiculously erroneous worldview.People are presented as paper cut outs, stamped out and forced into Sutton's preconceived notions of gender and sex.It is genuinely laughable how Sutton attempts to explain the blairing anomalies of her thinking or conviently ignores what is commond practice and desire among men and women.
4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction to the Lifestyle
This book is a wonderful resource for those who are thinking of exploring or have just begun to explore the realm of BDSM. The authors have provided a frank, intelligent overview into a very broad and often difficult subject. I enjoyed the tone of this book...informative, but not condescending. It's an easy read, and each section stands sufficiently on its own, so if you have a specific need for information you can read only what applies at the time.

5-0 out of 5 stars As Entertaining as it is Enlightening.
Dr. Helen Fisher's Why We Love is the rarest of books as it manages to simultaneously be both scientific and conversational in tone. All the citations, studies, and interpretations one would hope to find are present here along with personal anecdotes, and endless quotations from literary figures. Dr. Fisher is a physical anthropologist who should not be confused with those batty ideologues found on the other, lower order, end of her profession who deny the basis of biological differences existing between the sexes. The evidence that love is but a series of chemical reactions in the brain undertaken as a means to advance our reproductive goals is both robust and highly believable. I've studied different works on this topic, but was particularly impressed by the thoroughness of her explanations--particularly for why a man falls in love with a particular woman. Dr. Fisher, after detailing man's obsession with youth and beauty, outlined various additional factors impacting on the formation of love such as a desire on the part of man to rescue and aid women in distress. A woman's need for assistance and his accompanying need to feel valued are no minor components in the recipe which produces attachment. An additional area of value was the subsection describing why feelings of love are heightened when a couple do something novel together. This was quite intriguing as the argument is quite convincing. Indeed, it explains much about what we describe as romantic. As a narrator, Dr. Fisher is far from detached, but I mention this more as commendation than criticism because her biases are transparent and her enthusiasm is contagious. That she communicates so effectively with readers is yet another reason why finishing this text was effortless. There is considerably more oomph in these 220 pages than a glance at its index would suggest. My only criticism is that Dr. Fisher needed to attach an answer key to the "Being in Love" questionnaire included in the Appendix. Without some way to systematically quantify responses, the reader's efforts will not be very meaningful. Regardless, this is an outstanding book which is very educational and meant for popular consumption.

3-0 out of 5 stars 3 Chemicals, Mild But Imprecise.
This is a somewhat intruiging empirical study of the three chemicals that provide the evolutionary basis for love. Dopamine, Norepinephrine, and Serotonin. The chapters on the differences between the sexes views and needs pertaining to intimacy sometimes hit the mark. Her observations were written in an engaging style devoid of technical jargon. However, the authors quoting of popular literary figures like Yeats and Dickens who wrote about Romantic love took away from her data since they were writing from a different and non-scientific perspective. Still, it is a worthy read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Answer: Because we are crazy
Romantic love is emotional cocaine on the brain. Studies have shown it. It is recklessness, poor judgement, and a biological drive to have children which serves an evolutionary purpose. It is not love when it is romance. Simply ... temporary mania, psyhosis, and insanity. Romantic "love" is the most ungrounding thing to one's emotional well-being. The best lives are often ruined by love: destroyed relationships, poor quality of lifestyle, etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reading for men too.
I just finished reading it and thought it was very informative and helpful. You are absolutely right in that this is stuff people do not learn about but really do need to know.I think if more people read this book there would be less unhappy relationships and divorces.I think it is extremely valuable reading for men too.It really helped me to understand the dynamics and issues in a relationship from both view points. As Habit #5 of THE SEVEN HABITS OF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE PEOPLE states, "Seek First to Understand, Then to be Understood".This book has really helped me to do this.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Guide That's Insightful And Helpful
Dr. Hall is clearly a very bright and talented therapist. Her ideas and counsel are things that are not only thought-provoking, but that I was able to actually use to improve my interaction with my husband. While not always easy because there's real honesty and work involved, the book was incredibly helpful for my relationship -- which was, frankly, a surprise given how little many books of this sort offer. Dr. Hall's book is insightful, has been beyond beneficial to my sense of self -- not just my sense of my own sexuality -- and has been worth infinitely more than the modest price.

2-0 out of 5 stars Another book on how to fix women
Ms. Hall could have written a more interesting book titled: "The Sexual Socialization of Males and How it Contributes to the Epidemic of Diminshed Libido in Women", instead, once again, the onus is placed on the woman to "fix" her low libido, while the sexually abusive culture she exists within, remains the same. Maybe lost libido is natures healthy response to the culture we live in, which does more to harm a woman's sexual development than help it. Not only do women have to deal with objectification, negative cultural messages about their intrinsic worth and purpose, as well as the threat of rape, but they should have a robust libido in the midst of all this. Ridiculous. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I've never learned so much from one book
My wife to be loves taking charge and now that I've learned the ins and outs of anal pleasure our time together is better than ever. She has always loved using devices on me, but prior to reading this book it was often too unpleasant to enjoy.A little pain good, but too much is too much. This book helped her learn how to deliver, and me to receive, in such a way we hardly have a reason to leave the house anymore.

4-0 out of 5 stars Only for conoisseurs!
This is the first book I have read from Osho, and I will say that he did a very good job in explaining important things, using few words and pages. It is a little book that will not take you much time to read. What will take longer is thinking about the important points the book makes.5-0 out of 5 stars Sex is important for physical and mental well-being.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, with one major concern
Treating Sexual Disorders is an excellent, multi-authored work.It describes sex and couples therapy in a comprehensive manner that will be especially useful to the beginning sex therapist.I have one major concern, however, and that is the last chapter (treating paraphilia). The psychodynamic orientation of the author makes him regard paraphilia as inherently pathological, and not just as a result of learning history that gives us all different "turn ons."Charlton speaks, for example, on page 309 of how "working closely with the paphiliacs involves a confrontation with the nature of evil" and later mentions the "evil inherent in perverse sexuality."To be fair, perhaps he was only referring to victimizing or to the DSM IV caveat that the behavior has to cause upset to the person engaging in it or to a victim. The tone of the entire chapter, however, seems to pathologize paraphilia more than the literature supports. In my own practice (I am a licensed psychologist), I see many clients who have been told that any form of unusual sexuality makes them evil or dirty. They don't need any more help to feel that way.More could have been written regarding mutually consensual play between couples that is just a little (or a lot) "kinky" without the heavy judgement. This chapter aside, there is a great deal of value in this volume.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This awesome piece of writing is one of the most detailed theses on the treatment of sexual disorders that i have ever read. Starting with minor disorders and working its way up to the real serious ones, he book has plenty of detail that you'll not miss at all. Great book, but found out that "Natural Penis Enlargement: New methods of avoiding and curing impotence, premature ejaculation, and erectile dysfunction safely and inexpensively. NEW Secrets that your doctor won't tell you, No Pumps, No Pills and No Gadgets!" by Platinum Millennium is much better and more interesting to read

5-0 out of 5 stars Educational, useful and well written
As a therapist who sees patients with sexual problems I found this book extremely helpful. The various chapters gave me the tools I needed to understand sexual difficulties from a psychological and physical perspective.I've even referred my patients to selected chapters of the book, and they have reported that they were able to understand the concepts without having a professional education.I would recommend this book to seasoned and novice therapists to add to their library. It addresses areas that therapists tend to avoid. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Wow, I never knew Walter had it in him
When I first hooked up with my man Walter I was strickly oral.I wasn't into anal, mostly because my last boyfriend just didn't know how to do it.Walter, always wanting to put it in me, bought this book and started reading it behind my back. Then about a month ago, he got me liquered up and while I was giving him head suggested we take this to the bedroom. When I walked through the door he tackled me and before I knew it things were happening and DAMN, it hit me...he was inside of me...and I really really liked it.After we were done he rolled over next to me and asked how it was and all I could say was "where did you learn to do that" (I won't say what exactly he did, but when your man does it to you...you'll know) and he showed me this book. Now he has his way with me quite a bit.He just knows how to do it right and after reading this book myself I've been able to curl his toes while he's on his knees as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, valuable and recommended!
I like very much Bill's honest, straightforward, detailed and resourceful discussion of ALL gay sex related topics. The photos are good enough and it was a nice read which I am sure that many guys with consider very valuable. I agree that this book is appropriate even for heterosexual men in case that they are interested to explore what anal pleasure is.
