1-0 out of 5 stars Pagan Philosophy 101
I bought this book as a gift for my spouse. Notice I said "spouse". Sex is made to be enjoyed within the bond of marriage, I do not condemn any sex enjoyed within that loving relationship. It is a pure and holy union instituted by God.
4-0 out of 5 stars Exciting yet difficult
I ordered the book and was so excited to see all the different positions one can do with their partner. Most of the positions are the same, maybe a leg move or an arm in a different position, but otherwise the book is alright.

5-0 out of 5 stars Got from the library and decided we need to own it
This book actually made me laugh out loud which led to my 10 year old son glancing over, reading the title and then telling me "I DON'T want to know what you are laughing about in that book". Which is exactly why I was reading it, he is quite resistant to any talk having to do with sex education.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Help in Easing Into Sex Discussions
I'm surprised that this book has not sold more copies at amazon. I can't say enough good about it.It was a great help in easing into sex discussions with my youth group.I am a part time baker and a part time youth leader and have to say, it brings down the guard that parents and kids alike have built.Especially when it comes to sensitive topics like sex, what it is, where it is done and what to say when the icky questions begin.Believe me, it is far better to begin on this topic at the early age of nine, than it is to wait until the age of 14 or 15.If you don't believe me, just wait and see what happens. Just remember, I told you so.
5-0 out of 5 stars Makes the very awkward almost comfortable
Drs Richardson and Schuster lead any parent through the situations and importance of talking with kids about sex, early and honestly. It's filled with sidebar-type information on specific, new issues like children and IM, how to use the female and male condom, and ways to help your son or daughter tell their boyfriend or girlfriend "no" if they're not ready, as well as funny stories from parents and from kids about how kids are figuring out their sexuality.Read more

Editorial Review

Many of us pursue fitness because we want to remain attractive to partners and potential partners, and we stay healthy so we can continue to have sex with those partners. But why do people care so much about sex? This book, written by an evolutionary biologist, explains how all the weird quirks of human sexuality came to be: sex with no intention of procreation, invisible fertility, sex acts pursued in private--all common to us, but very different from most other species. Diamond spends twenty one laughable pages on male lactation. What's next? How about implanting a uterus? After all, men are stronger and could probably carry babies better.
2-0 out of 5 stars Pretentious and lacking
I sincerely expected much more from the author of "Guns, Germs and Steel" than this booklet that thrives on the trivia of evolutonary psychology. It'sobious why is sex fun- to encourage reproduction - and I expected the author went beyond this self-evident fact. Bit it didn't. And, excuse me, Dr. Diamond, how you account for gay sex in your reasoning? Homosexuality is totallyoverlooked, yet it's one of the mayor puzzles ofhuman sexuality- and of sexuality in general.
4-0 out of 5 stars I know why! Do you?
Okay, for the most part this question is obvious. The answer is because if feels so gooooooood. The real question is why does it feel so good. How did we evolve to enjoy sex when to some extent the rest of the animal kingdom does it solely to get their genes into the next generation?

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic
As a graduate student in psychology this was required reading for one of my classes. This book is nothing short of exquisite. Schnarch writes from a very authentic 'been there' place which draws the reader in like magnet. Lots of very good case studies which beautifully integrate the theoretical material. Schnarch's lense is a new and refreshing integration of couples & sex therapy (who ever thought of separating the two anyway??). It focuses on differentiation rather than fusion. This is a page-turner that organically induces self-reflection inspired by the very authenticity of it's author.

Editorial Review

The closer a secret is kept, the more powerful the impact once it is finally revealed. Such is the case with author and activist J.L. King's intriguing look at the lives and lifestyles of black men who sleep with other men but do not consider themselves to be gay. These men live "on the down low," the "DL" for short, and their sexual activities have gained significant notice as the rate of HIV/AIDS infection in black women has skyrocketed, with the vast majority of cases coming from heterosexual sex. King is a veteran of the DL himself and his book serves partly as a social and psychological survey of the other men he has surveyed and partly as highly candid memoir. King was well regarded in his community, popular at his church, successful in his career, and married to a woman who had no idea that his secret life existed. But when she caught him in a lie and with another man, the marriage collapsed and King's long and painful path to self-awareness began. King cites the negative image many socially conservative black men have of homosexuality as an obstacle to those men being honest with their partners and themselves about who they are. Among the more intriguing elements of Read more

This book be a load o bull****. First off if you sleep with men and you a man, your a fa****, and thats all there is to it. And if your a fa**** with a woman, have some decency and respect, to let her know and get the he11 out of her life, instead of commitin murder by killing her with aids. And on another note; I dont know if its just me, but it seems like the author trying to say the only down low f***s is black guys, so I guess he's never been to the village on west 4th in NY city.

5-0 out of 5 stars Facing Reality
Dr. Carnes is a noted authority and perhaps the premier researcher in the area of sexual addiction. His work goes back easily some twenty years.I have studied with Dr. Carnes and I can say with some authority that this may be his finest work.It is the fruit of much thought and labor. It is reality.Carl Rogers said:"Until we can accept ourselves as we really are we can't change."This book, really a work book, helps the addicted person do just that. But it doesn't stop there. The addict is able to see through the work he does that he is able, through healthy activities, to regain control of his life. This is the second edition.Dr. Carnes demonstrates not only his high standards of authorship, but his humility and ability to accept constructive criticism both from within himself and I think perhaps others, in the changes he has put into this second edition. They are well worth the effort.Dr. Carnes comes at the sexual addiction issue with clarity, research, and above all empathy. His other work "The Recovery Zone,"will I think prove to be as well received as this work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good introduction of transsexuals for nearly everyone
Transgendered persons, especially transsexuals, seem to be little understood by most people. There is still widespread ignorance, lack of understanding and prejudice against transsexuals. Some recent movies portraying transsexuals with understanding, empathy and tolerance, such as "Transamerica" and "Normal" should help many people better understand, tolerate and accept transsexuals.
5-0 out of 5 stars Awsome book overall
My only complaint about this book is that all of the references and background deals with adult transexual people. It would be nice if it were updated with references for children and adolesents. Overall I would highly recommend it. It is comprehensive and well written and provides an excellent knowledge base for the reader.

2-0 out of 5 stars Best taken with a grain of salt
This book gives a relatively good overall view of transsexualism for people who know nothing about it, but with some serious flaws. The author's descriptions of the experience are based entirely on accounts from therapy clients and her approach is objective, too much so in many regards. She presents outdated information without any genuine effort to refute it, such as the old freudian psycho-model of "gender identity disorder." She also mentions the horrid "treatments" visited on transsexuals, such as "aversion therapy" and "shock treatments" with no mention of their obvious cruel inhumanity. Her statement that we can't "change the brain," is downright sickening, and she presents it as though science should actually strive toward that Stepford Wives solution to transsexualism.

5-0 out of 5 stars must read
This is a very good book for new commers to read. Lots of details and even illistrations of some things. I would deffinatly recammend it even to "expierenced" players.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for beginners and for experienced too
I stumbled into the BDSM scene recently. I am lucky that I got to Jay's book early, although not early enough to avoid a few faux pas socially. Also, In his complete and very readable book I realised that some "experts" need to read it too, particularly when it comes to negotiation and safety. This book contains a lot of information lightened up with a few giggles. Worth the money even if you just THINK you may be interested in the subject.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great place to start
Great intro to what BDSM means and is all about. My interests are mainly in bondage and "giving erotic pain," and while I don't see myself ever having my own dungeon (too complicated with kids and my often >60 hr workweek but I love the idea!) and I'm too much of a monogamist to ever play with anyone other than my wife, this book is excellent for building a base of knowledge that someone can use to enter and enjoy BDSM in whatever level of involvement he or she might be interested.Dispels much of the myth and prejudice with which BDSM is viewed (good even for an "open-minded" person such as myself) - the dark, dangerous, abusive and freaky practice of perverts. It's funny to think of how many people are into BDSM and don't know it (ever given your sig other a little spanking, fantasized about handcuffs, or done a little roleplaying?).Not a bad place to start as far as bondage interests are concerned; once I'm done with this review, I'm going to buy the bondage books by Jay Wiseman and Midori. And I definitelyliked the chapter on giving erotic pain.He takes a lot of time explaining how to be caring and considerate (as both a "top" and a "bottom"), and how to always play it safe.Much appreciated book, and a quick read despite so much useful quality information. If you're already very involved with BDSM, this book would probably be rather elementary, but then again, you most likely read this book a long time ago.Even if your interests are peripheral at best, this book will open your mind and if nothing else, feed your curiosity and educate you about a world that many of us didn't know existed. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Required reading
"Top 1000" reviewer Timothy W. Lieder wrote (see his uninformed review below) that he only read half of this book and that Reich recommended "more orgasms". I seriously doubt that Timothy W. Lieder even read a quarter of the book.
5-0 out of 5 stars A deeply thought-out and provacative book
This is my first exposure to Reich, and what he has to say is more relevant today than ever. It's easy to be misled by the title and think its about having more sex, but nothing could be further than the truth. Heexplores the direct relationship between neuroses (and most of society is neurotic to varying degrees as a result of being raised in an authoritarian manner) and the inability to surrender completely to the the full bio-energetic pleasure of complete orgasm. If you have studied any Tantra you may be aware that what most of us call orgasm is only a genital sneeze, in terms of the possibility available. Thus, we are cut off from the totality of what we are and this is expressed in the energetics of our experience of orgasm, and ultimately, how we live our lives. He also explores the evolution of fascism under these constraints, and how it propogates itself through society.Frightening stuff, particularly in light of current world politics. All in all, a fascinating read, slowed only by old terminology. My only disappointment was the lack of exposition of his therapeutic techniques, other than it appears he is the first to use the breath in healing. This book will open your mind to new ways of thinking about the relationships between our selves, our culture and our politics.

5-0 out of 5 stars On the biological and social implications of "love making"
The book focuses on the function of orgasm as an important PART of "healthy" love making. The issues discussed are timeless and at the same time not given the proper importance in our everyday life. Why? The author gives his opinion which is informed by the biological, psychological and social scientific domain.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Pain and Hypnosis
Although there are many books on hypnosis and to a certain degree a rather long list of works on scripts for hypnotherapy, there are few good works on pain scripts. I was therefore surprised to discover Dr. Marlene E. Hunter, M.D. book entitled "Creative Scripts for Hypnotherapy."
5-0 out of 5 stars A rare jewel of a book for clinicians and other therapists
Using a wonderful array of metaphors the author outlines various strategies and mechanisms that physicians and other therapists might use to assist patients towards resolving or coping with a wide range of both physical and psychological suffering. The concept that all symptoms are psychosomatic was certainly an insight for me that has contributed enourmously to improving my own communication with patients both in and out of hypnosis. This highly practical guide effectively allows the therapist to adapt the scripts to an enourmous variety of situations.I have found the section on phobias and fears particularly helpful in treating the common needle phobia encountered in my own hospital practice. 4-0 out of 5 stars Hard...but worth it.
Foucault is one of the most important thinkers of our time. He is a historian, a cultural theorist, and a philosopher. When looking at the History of Sexuality Foucault does not see powerful figures repressing sex, but actually encouraging people to discuss it. This discourse was encouraged so that sex could be controlled and this discourse actually created what is today called sexuality--a norm that we believe to be culturally independent or universal. The belief that sex is repressed is only another strategy formed through a series of power relationships that desires for people to keep discussing sex in order that this "sex" can be classified and controled. For example: Encouraging a discourse on the act of sodomy enabled a catagory of homosexual to be created. Instead of sodomy being a act that a person may engage in, that person instantly became a homosexual, his sexuality constituting his entire being--how he/she should talk, act, and live in general. The discourse that was encourage to develop around sex enable power to classify and control sexuality--power actually created what we believe to be the "real sexuality". Foucault explains the complicated relationship between power and discourse that developed a set of complicated and sometimes contradicting--and always changing--ideas about what sex is and how we are to approach it.
3-0 out of 5 stars Influential and important work, absolutely dreadful translation
I would concur with the Marquis point regarding the quality of the translation, which is obfuscating at best, and downright misleading at its worst. For those with the French, go with the original text (French title "La Volente de Savoir"). But I thought it worth mentioning that there does apparently exist an alternative translation of the work by a Robert Hurley, which has been published rather recently under the title "The History of Sexuality: the Will to Knowledge" (ISBN: 0140268685). Unfortunately I haven't had an opportunity to check out the new translation, though I would love to know whether it's any better.
1-0 out of 5 stars Abysmal
All Volumes Reviewed: Is this the work of Michel Foucault, the author of "Order of Things," "Discipline and Punish," and "Archeology of Knowledge?" Surely, this must be a hoax. Foucault is notoriously provocative, keenly insightful, and always virulent. So what happened here? Hardly much of a history, anything but provocative, entirely pedestrian, already outdated, and woefully incomplete. Accessibility is not a problem, unlike "Archeology of Knowledge," but truly lacking in information, perspective, and relevance. Compare, for example, this trite and superficial reading with Compton's expansive and exhaustive "Homosexuality and Civilization." After all, Foucault was gay and into sado-masochism. The two are incomparable. A complete waste of time (since I was sure Foucault had something quixotic to write over three volumes), but hope never materialized into reality. PASS. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Circle of Stones, Woman's Journey to Herself
I can't tell you how this book touched my spirit."How might (my) life have been different," if I had read this book when I was young and not 52 years.Better yet, how different it might have been if my own mother had read this book, or one like it, when I was young!I have recommended it to every woman who will listen, regardless of age.It is an oh, so gentle, yet oh, so powerful call to reconnect with ourselves and other women for common experience. It is NOT a man bashing book, quite the contrary, it merely calls for natural balance to be restored in our world. If you are a single father of a daughter, I recommend you read this book as a way of guiding your child...read it while she is young for future reference guidance.Mother's, it is not too late for you to learn from this book, and for you to guide your own daughters with it's wisdom.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ideal for individual reflection
Now in a superbly presented fifteenth anniversary edition, Circle Of Stones is a classic spiritual guide for women featuring meditative experiences drawn from ancient cultures and rituals. Vignettes narrating the life journeys and searches of individual women guide the reader into personal reflection. Ideal for individual reflection or for reading aloud among women's circles, this moving vision of past, present, and future for women promotes awareness and understanding of female responsibilities, powers, and dreams. Woman, with a candle lighted/to help her keep faith with her own life.../a centered presence/spreading in concentric circles around her.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent application of the MBTI to relationship dynamics
Despite its somewhat maudlin title and front cover, this book is very interesting. It based on Jungian MBTI theory which in my view is a very powerful tool for understanding people's personality. The book itself is not theoretical: it gives a brief description of the 16 types and then there is a couple of pages for each of the 136 possible combinations. Much has been printed about the MBTI, but this one has a very interesting practical approach. For each combination, you find a paragraph on the strengths, a paragraph on the weaknesses, and a short list of key recommendations for each partner. Even if you know everything about Jungian psychology you can still discover some new insights on personality relationships. For the anecdote, my INTJ recommendation list (with my ESFJ wife) is a pretty goood summary of everything I do wrong at home !

4-0 out of 5 stars Sexy
I took two books on my recent five day vacation. This one gave me an orgasm (I loved this book as you might guess), and because I'm going into the B&B business, I took along "I'm Living Your Dream Life" by Michele Cozzens. No orgasm, but did learn one hell of a lot about the B&B business. Both were very fun reads.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Name Says It All
This book definitely lives up to its name.I was hooked from the introduction on.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Resource for Purity I've stumbled upon
Having read almost every book I can find on the subject I can say that this book is the best out there. It describes the problem and challenges you.He gives helpful insight to vividly expose the lie of the problem and then gives you comfort and encouragement from his own life. Many examples of different situations this problem could take year are sobering in themselves. He knows his subject and the pattern of the sin.We have over 30 people using this book in our addictions group at our church, and all agree it is what happens and it is telling the truth unapologetically. The biblical truth present here has kept me from hurting myself with this sin over and over again. Thanks Steve for this book!
5-0 out of 5 stars Profoundly helpful to struggling men.
I do a lot of counseling of men struggling with sexual addiction.Far more than any book I have encountered, "At the Altar of Sexual Idolatry" cuts right to the heart of the problem.Steve Gallagher has finally given the evangelical world a book that uses the Word of God to deal with this terrible epidemic.I have given to many men, and almost all have found it remarkably helpful in their battle.
5-0 out of 5 stars SAVED MY LIFE!!!
This is an EXCELLENT book!!!If you need someone to coddle you and hold your hand - forget it.If you want to read something that will help you to come out of your mess, then you need to read this. This man speaks the truth with love, but he does not placate those involved in the viscious demonic cycle of sexual addiction. It is VERY hard-hitting!!!In fact, it took me several weeks to get thru it because there were days when I just did not feel like "crucifying my flesh" as this book will encourage you to do.But if you want freedom that last and will also give you eternal life, this book is for you!
