4-0 out of 5 stars Very good book
This book is good for any student who is willing to learn the rudiments of critiquing an article. Meltzoff summarizes the important features in a clear way with numerous examples. The only problem is the articles are too short - I wish they were longer in order to give a much more comprehensive critique (but this is not a major problem)!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Research Information for Students
If you want to learn to think critically about doing research and evaluating the research of others, this is a very useful book to read. It has many "research articles" (made up by the author) that have errors discussed in the book. Unlike many books that just talk about issues, this actually has extended examples that seem like real life scenarios.4-0 out of 5 stars Good for advanced college student or beginning grad student
I reviewed this book hoping to use it for an advanved undergraduate course.Although I like the book, it is a bit too advanced for many undergraduates. The book assumes a basic level of knowledge many college undergraduates may not have (e.g., the meaning of the term "nominal" variable). On the other hand, there is excellent material on scale construction and sampling. The book also has a great section of short studies followed by a critical review of the flaws in each.I plan to use the book to prepare lectures and perhaps as a supplement to the main text in the course. First or second year graduate students will likely find the book to be a very useful addition to their training in research methodology. For example, a brief section on the proper use of change scores in statistical analyses is very helpful and much clearer than either of the sources from which the material is cited as having originated (i.e., Pedhazur, 1982; and Keppel, 1982). ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A much-underestimated topic
Sleep is one of the most common activities in our lives. As such, one would expect that everybody would know a lot about it.4-0 out of 5 stars Quite surprising actually
We spend a full third of our life sleeping, but what do we really know about it. Why do we sleep? What causes us to sleep? What happens when we sleep? All these questions remain unanswered, but scientists are working--dare I say it? oh, why not--around the clock to explain why we can't work around the clock.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I ordered this book just because Dr. Coren is my favorite author (How ToSpeak Dog, The Intelligence Of The Dogs, Why We Love The Dogs We Do).Iwas certain that I would find this book very interesting, and I wasn'twrong. This book is truly wonderful. He explains how many hours should wesleep and what happens to us if we don't. How our mental and physicalhealth depends on sleep, and gives advices as to how to improve the qualityof our sleep.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Ogden - working with very hurt patients
Ogden shares with us his experience of working with patients who are very difficult to work with or to help. He tells of the first meeting with people who seek his help and the warning stories they tell him about how the therapy will fail or even hurt them or the therapist. It helped me to listen in a different way to my clients and to talk to them about what they told me. This is an excellent book that all therapists need to read and to think about. ... Read more

I have used various editions of this text in my classes for many years. It provides an excellent overview of the basic research methodologies. The text is clear and understandable for individuals who have no research background.

5-0 out of 5 stars A New Approach
In contrast to the now popular emphasis on addictive drugs "hijacking" the brain reward centers and producing pleasure, Dr. Khantzian life work has pursued an alternative route in explaining why addictive drugs can become so compelling in an individual's life. His emphasis has mainly and consistently been on the human psychological vulnerabilities involved in addictive suffering. Based on three decades of clinical work with patients, as well as numerous clinical investigative studies, Dr.Khantzian has persuasively instructed us that suffering and problems with selfregulation are at the root of addictive disorders. His work has repeatedly underscored that individuals who become dependent on addictive substances (including alcohol and nicotine) do so not because they seek pleasure or self-destruction (some have considered addictions as "suicide on the installment plan"), but more because they use alcohol and other addictive drugs as an attempt to self-medicate their suffering and to regulate their lives. Although in the long run such attempts cause great disruption in peoples' lives, in the short run individuals have the powerful discovery that each class of drugs have appeal because they relieve a range of painful feelings and help to cope with powerful emotions and behaviors that for them are otherwise overwhelming and unmanageable. Dr.Khantzian has been described as the "father of the self-medication hypothesis of addictive disorders," and has also written extensively on "self-care" deficits associated with the addictions, the importance and utility of modified group techniques and self-help groups in recovery and effective treatments. Dr. Khantzian writes persuasively, evocatively, and compassionately about the human vulnerabilities involved in addictive disorders. Dr. Alan Stone, Professor of Law and Psychiatry at Harvard University, has characterized Dr. Khantzian as a "master clinician exploring the internal world of the addicted person convincingly demonstrating his self-medication hypothesis," and novelist Dr. Michael Palmer has said that Dr. Khantzian's book, Treating Addiction as a Human Process, is a "highly intelligent volume that can be read with pleasure and awe from beginning to end. It is the cornerstone on which the next generation of knowledge in addiction medicine will be built." Dr. Khantzian has been acknowledged as a pioneering clinician in understanding the psychological and psychiatric pain associated with substance use disorders, and his focus on the self-medicating function of abused substances, and the refinement of his work stressing addict's ego deficits of selfregulation and self-care have become the standard in the field of addiction treatment.5-0 out of 5 stars A New Approach

5-0 out of 5 stars a psychological overview
This book is not an attempt to tell us what the "meanings of life" are, just what we think they are: it's psychology, not philosophy. An interesting aspect of the book is the explorations of ways that we sometimes find our "meanings" inadequate.
3-0 out of 5 stars Accessible and Informative
I found this book at a local university bookstore for medical students, being used as a primary text for its psychiatric core curriucla. I can see easily why it was chosen. It is written with academic rigor based in the social sciences but often reads like a self-help book. In a critical way, it is both. As a textbook, it reads with vigor and analycity of the behavioral sciences and analytic philosophy, and as a self-help book, it reads like a serious, intelligent discussion of the scientific bases for meanings in one's life. 4-0 out of 5 stars Revealing and Thought Provoking
Read this book for a tutorial class called "Construction and Maintenance of the Self".Baumeister conveys his theoritical perspective on the meaning of the self (and its implications on the meanings of life)in a highly accessible and convincing manner. He argues from the perspective that the self is a social construct and that in the West, the meanings that have been put into the construction and maintenance of this self have created a burden on the individual. The stress associated with maintaining this concept of self can be used to explain why people engage in behaviors such as alcholism and sado-masochism.I highly recommend this book, especially if you are interested in concepts of the self and its relation to (what Baumeister would not consider) self-disruptive behaviors. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST READ for all mental health professionals!
As a master's level, state credentialed substance abuse counselor that has been in the field for over 15 years, I found Bishop's book to be one of the best texts that I have read in my career on addiction counseling, treatment and recovery. Bishop elegantly synthesizes the often conflicting models of abstinence based/12 step recovery and harm reduction. He very pragmatically values both perspectives and guides the practitioner in finding what works best for his or her individual client. I can honestly say that this book provided me with a much needed professional epiphany and I will keep it within easy reach for reference purposes for as long as I practice my profession. I highly recommend this book to anyone that works with substance abusing clients.

5-0 out of 5 stars Concise and clear!
I found this very interesting book and above all of easy consultation. In the area I believe it is one of the best for its clarityand the advice to all those that work in the field of the additions and not only. Also I can add, having known the author, that the book reflects in full everything its skill and its extreme preparation in merit.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE definitive work on addictions treatment
F. Michler Bishop's seminal volume "Managing Addictions" breaks new ground in the field of substance abuse counseling and psychotherapy. The author manages to provide a perfect blend of science and clinical wisdom whereas other books addressing this difficult work tend to favor one over the other. The result will have clinicians being able to apply a variety of empirically validated techniques while at the same time not sacrificing individual style. On a personal note, this book has converted me from conducting exclusive non-substance use/abuse disorders psychotherapy to becoming interested and receiving training in substance abuse work (specifically nicotine addiction). Herein lies the greatest value of Bishop's efforts: its value to ALL in the helping professions, regardless of their training or area of specialization. Not only do I highly recommend this book, I believe it should be required reading for all mental health professionals. ... Read more

Nancy Anderson's unique book, Work with Passion, is unlike anything I've ever read. It's a one-of-a-kind, hands-on, practical approach to getting paid to do what comes naturally to you. This is not a job hunt book. It's about the process that takes you to knowing your life's work, what's enjoyable for you, the job or business that uses all of your talents and skills. Doing this work gives you deep personal satisfaction, and all the money you need.
