Not as good as everyone says
This seems to be the textbook of choice for a research course for most college instructors. That eliminates being able to choose a better written book of which there are many. I found the text not well organized and at times somewhat confusing with explanations that could have been done with fewer words and far more clarity. Myers' and Hansen's "Experimental Psychology" is by far a better choice in my opinion, with better organization, clearer examples and a friendlier style.

I know that it sounds strange that a book on research methodology could be interesting, but this is the one.Easy reading.Covers all phases of the thesis and dissertation process.Written by folks who have actually written them and who are currently supervising those are are going through this difficult and challenging process. Excellent Introduction to Behavioral Statistics
I was truly fearful of statistics but I think this book saved me.I thought the textbook was readable, had excellent examples, the terms were clear and the text is written in an applied way.The people who rated this text harshly would not have been pleased with any stats text,after all it is stats...what math is not dry.HELLOOOO!?

Mandatory for class, but not worth it
If you've ever taken a statistics class, you won't really need this book.
Don't get burned like I did!
Imagine my surprise when I thought I was getting an affordable softcoverversion of Hurlburt's excellent Psych. stats. text, to find that in factAmazon had not listed the title properly.This book is in fact the STUDYGUIDE to the text, and like all study guides is overpriced and of dubiousmerit (the sample problems in the original are entirely adequate).Ithought I could get this thorough, easy-to-read, well-illustrated andtabled text at a great price (and easily portable format) but I WAS BURNEDby Brooks/Cole (who apparently don't actually offer the softcover) andAmazon (who apparently couldn't be bothered to make the distinction whenlisting the title).That being said, in an ideal world (where few aspiringclinicians struggle), the original text is in fact worth the $81.95hardcover.I have only been able to bring myself to read half a dozenstatistics textbooks, but this one has been the most"user-friendly" in terms of its layout, tables, language and flowof material presentation.I wish my professor had used it in undergradintro. stats. ... Synthesizing Research:A Guide for Literature Reviews
Good text.I'm using it for a class where I'm doing an integrated literature review in prep for my dissertation.It is very systematic in its approach.

Best buy for intro to meta-analysis
Among the various works on doing a synthetic literature review, I found this book to be the most informative for its size. All essential aspects seem to be well-covered. The much larger work co-edited by the same authoronly adds detailed treatment of statistical issues. The only drawback tothe book is that it is written in the extremely dense prose preferred bypsychology professors. The days of significance testing are numbered...
First off, this book is written in plain English for those of us with less than stellar mathematical backgrounds.Also, the level at which it is written suggests it would make a great masters level stats course supplimental reading choice.The author walks us through the history of statistical testing and shows us where social scientists have gone wrong.Tests of statistical significance are often considered the most important indication of publication worthiness, or of experimental success whereas they really are not.For instance, what good is finding a significant difference between two groups (or in regression, finding an independant varaible significantly predicting a dependant varaible) if the effect size is so small as to be trivial?Kline discusses this in terms of "statistical significance vs. practical significance". This is one example of the very logical arguments he presents regarding aspects of behavioral statistics that most of us probably take for granted.

The book was in great shape. There were no missing pages and the cover was all shinny, like brand new.

Avoids pitfalls
Most books on quantitative psychology are long and overly technical.This one seems to explain the math gently and without disregarding the contextual explanations of how empirical research is done.Also, the authors are very conscious of the limitations of science and avoid, quite successfully, giving the impression that numbers always reflect reality.If you want to be able to understand those cryptic studies that appear in scientific journals, get this book!It also has several good references for obtaining more information while performing empirically based research, yourself. ... Great for Excelsior's Research Methods in Psych test....
Although I never ended up taking the test myself, several people advised me to buy this book, which in fact is the recommended textbook listed on the content outline for the ECE Research Methods test. After skimming though it, it appears to cover what is on the test (according to the outline). But get a used copy, unless you want to pay $100+ for a new one.

This book is great!!!
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who would like to learn more about experimenting in Psychology.Myers and Hansen clearly explain confusing terms and use examples from daily life (when applicable).It is well worth the investment for Psychology majors and can also be enjoyed if you've never had a Psychology course before. ... Great primary reference
This is a great primary reference work.It has a few amusing bits of Classical Test Theory-bashing polemic, which seem both pointless and de rigeur for IRT practitioners.In almost all other aspects, however, this is a well thought-out and highly useful primer for anyone looking to get up-to-speed quickly on using IRT methods to expand and improve their measurement strategies.

Excellent Introduction to the Rasch Model
An excellent contribution to theory and practice.The book is a lucid introduction to the one-parameter IRT methodology that is extremely well-written.

Clear, Concise and Fun!
