4-0 out of 5 stars New Psychology Student
I was required to buy this book for a entry-level college psychology class. So far I have read about 5 chapters (experiments). Each experiment is broken down into it's own chapter, with a total of around a dozen chapters.I've enjoyed the book so far and would recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Skinner's box...or Pandora's box?
Focusing on the ten most controversial psychological experiments of the 20th century, Lauren Slater takes us on a thrill ride to litterally the cutting edges of psychological theory.
4-0 out of 5 stars Ask and you shall receive
As someone who studies psychology, I enjoy watching people.A few weeks ago I was telling my boyfriend (who just took his first psychology class) about some of the rumors surrounding the famous psychologists of our day: this famous relationships researcher has fidelity problems, this obedience researcher is overly narcissistic, etc.Even if the stories are not true, they give the famous psychologist we put on a pedestal a face (or a cup of coffee to spill on himself or herself) in my mind.I told him I wished someone could write some sort of expose to see if the rumors are true.I conceded that most likely a book like that would have to be written posthumously though; who wants to be exposed as a philanderer while they are still alive?

5-0 out of 5 stars hard cover and softcover
I remember I odered this book with a hardcover, but what I recieved is softcover. I am using this book, and won't return it to you. But I hope next time, it won't happen to me again. Thanks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Design and Analysis: A Researcher's Handbook
This is absolutely one of the best statistical analysis reference books that I've ever seen. It's easy to read, easy to follow and doesn't skip the minor steps that people several years out of the academia environment tend for forget.I highly recommend this handbook for anyone that is wanting to do Real Work in Real Time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Intuitive, yet rigorous
This is probably the best experimental design and analysis text available out there.Unlike other texts (e.g., Winer et al.'s), it is writen as a book to be read rather than as a reference to be consulted sporadically. My graduate students all praise it for being just at the right level of intuitiveness-rigor.I suspect that it covers about 85-90% of the analysis issues that behavioral researchers face with respects to experimental data (e.g., from one-way ANOVAs to three-way mixed-design factorials, contrast analysis, elementary ANCOVA).For the rest (e.g., fractional designs, random-effects models), researchers should consult more technical (and less readable) texts such as Kirk's and Winer et al.'s.I only wished that the author would come up with a new edition--the current edition (the 3rd) was published in 1991--and that he would use a broader range of examples (e.g.,from social psychology as opposed to cognitive psychology only). Overall, however, it's a great reference. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best if You do not Know that much Statistics
I had only taken a very elementary course in Statistics and this book helped me to really improve my knowledge of Statistics. Either you want only to know what's going on in Statistics world or you want to start to learn it to the highest levels, I do recommend this book. I know a lot about Statistics now, but I still go back to the book and review some of the concepts.

1-0 out of 5 stars Difficult Text
As an older grad student who hasn't had math or a stats class in a long time, this text was tough to understand. In fact, after the first chapter, I never used it--I found Gravetter and Wallnau's "Essentials of Statistics" much more helpful.(I aced the course--but I also had a great professor).

5-0 out of 5 stars Statistical Methods for Psychology by David Howell
I am a university professor who is always looking for an advanced statistics text that will make some of the most common (and some not-so-common) statistical tests understandable and accessible to my students. It is true that this text is not suitable for the novice looking for an introduction to the field. However, for those who already understand the basic principles and concepts, this book is an invaluable tool. My graduate students love it, and I find it to be among the best of its kind. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A book every man and woman should read
Look at every vote of one star for this book and see if it's not an emotional rant that does not dispute a single fact in this well-documented and researched book.I have yet to see an example given of a single false piece of the vast amount of information it contains since it was first published in 1992.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Myth of Male Power
Should be read by every man, and women, to understand and benefit from the knowledge of our cultural upbringing and how it invisibly impacts our lives and how we act. It is freeing to understand the "why and how" of sexual stereotypes that we don't even know impact us daily. I am a CEO coach and have given this to clients who have said it was one of the best things I did for them, as it helped their marriage and took away personal stress for them. A must read for true personal growth and understanding of our cultural bias. Warren Farrell is way ahead of society on male-female roles, relationships and how to improve and understand them. His book "Father and Child Reunion" is the bible for divorce and getting children to florish, not perish, after divorce.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!

1-0 out of 5 stars dchijellis
Slow and cumbersome to use. Does not integrate well with MS Word, operating almost as its own software as opposed to an add-on. Online tutorials from Purdue University or the APA Style Helper book would be much more useful and not slow down your computer or cause you (trick you) into losing your work.

1-0 out of 5 stars AVOID AT ALL COSTS
I'm studying to be a Social Worker, and this software would have made typing papers easier... had it worked. I downloaded the software to see how it worked, and not only was the demo not fully functional, but was also no uninstallable, either with the Control Panel or with System Suite. I had to delete the folder that was created when I installed the program.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good reference, once you know something about SEM
As a student of Dr. Kaplan's, we used this book as a way to remind us what the loads of greek symbols scrawled across our notes actually meant. While not written to be used with any specific program, I find the book to be a great reference when I haven't used SEM for a while and need to be reminded of some of its nuances. If you are trying to learn SEM, I suggest you get a book specifically written for the program you plan on using first.Once you understand the basics, this book comes in handy. Also useful if you have a burning desire to understand the barebones behind what SEM is and the math involved. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for social scientists
This is a great book.Everyone who uses statistics in any way should read it.Maybe everyone who READS articles that contain statistics should read it!The mathematics is minimal (very few formulas, and those are basic), but a lot of very good advice on how to use statistics sensibly (and how it is sometimes used nonsensically!).

4-0 out of 5 stars nicely written description of how stats should be applied
The author is a psychologist with strong graduate training in mathematics and statistics. He did his graduate work at Princeton and as his dedication indicates. he was very much influenced by the work of John Tukey (who he probably took courses from at Princeton in addition to later interactions). Abelson is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association and is very knowledgeable on the statistical literature from the 1940s up to the present.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Relationists Rule!
This is a terrific book. Not only is it easy to absorb, but it is downright absorbing! There is much to be said about new excavations in the world of psychoanalysis, and this book details explorations into the prosaic as well as the bizarre. The structure, ie, the editors' comments first, the chapter, and then the afterword, all serve to put the content into perspective for the reader. As a lay learner, I highly recommend this book to students of mind studies, as well as to all persons interested in understanding more about their own psychology. 5-0 out of 5 stars Narrative statistics
I read the whole 3rd edition of this book and I did not have many complains, other than the chapter on 2 way ANOVA was too brief. I tried to look inside this book, but such info is not available here at this moment. At least I know the former edition was really good. Everything else than 2 way ANOVA was explained in narrative ways that definitively help to understand this topics much better than so many other book filled of junk equations. However, I'm not so sure if you should use this book if you're currently taking a statistic related course because you may need immediate answers, just equations and repetitive solutions. The proper and deeper knowledge that will be useful in real life when doing research takes much longer time to learn and you shold take it at some time later on. I am not a psychology major, but a chemistry one and the book is just as helpful to me as to the aimed audience, it's math after all, 1 + 1 is 2 no matter which one is your major.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply superb
Not only an excellent introduction to the treatment of patients with borderline personality disorder, but also an extremely lucid explanation of object relations theory and its application.Because the authors define "borderline personality organization" quite broadly, the techniques they outline are applicable to nearly all patients in long-term, insight-oriented psychotherapy. This is by far the best introduction to the murky world of object relations theory, and to the work of Otto Kernberg, that I have yet encountered. In spite of its cumbersome title, it is probably destined to become a classic. As Peter Fonagy writes on the back cover: "It is a must have." ...
