5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Regression Book for a Class Devoted to Regression
This is a wonderful text for a class primarily dedicated to multiple regression.I own and have read many regression textbooks, and this continues to be one of the very best! The reader reviews below appear to mostly be expressing frustration with instructors, and not this text.If you are taking an introductory course in which regression is one of many topics, this book may be too advanced for your needs (and may be a poor choice by your instructor!).However, if you are taking a course dedicated to regression (linear and logistic; or general linear models in general), this is one of the very best text available!

1-0 out of 5 stars Thumbs WAY DOWN!!!
It seems as if this book is meant for the advanced statistics student. Teaching myself multiple regression for an independent study, this is not the book to use!! (I was assigned the book, this wasn't voluntary!) Author uses "I" this and "I" that far too many times. Also, gives very complicated examples that are extremely difficult to follow. Also, author will explain, for example, something in Chapter 7, but then says that the topic will be discussed in Chapter 9!! There are far too many references to future chapters. How am I supposed to know what he is talking about if I don't read the book in reverse!!! This over 1000-page-book could've have been written in probably more like 500 pages. Terrible, terrible, terrible. If I could, I would demand my money back. I now have to pay for another book to learn. PLEASE, DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Qualitative Manual
Prof used this book in a PhD Qualitative Research and Evaluation class. It is a nice refrence on the practical asspects of some of the more nebular qualitative methods rubric books. Ex, it gives some insight as to interview "feeling"... Having focused on Qualitative Methods in England... you should pair it with more 'hard core' works as well. Hope this helps.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best guide to research techniques in the social sciences
Lee gives a six star performance by improving on what was already a five star performance in the third edition before Kerlinger's death. This is a must have book for anyone planning to do statistical analysis ,not only in psychology, but in the social sciences as well(especially economics). For example,Lee points out(pp.265,863)the importance of doing some type of test for goodness of fit(Chi- Square test, etc.)BEFORE a researcher assumes that he can make use of the normal probability distribution as an approximation of the data set at hand. This has not beenthe case in econometric time series studies of (a) financial markets(financial economics, portfolio analysis)or of(b) real, durable investment over the business cycle. The Black-Scholes equation and the CAPM model, both used as foundations in business finance courses in all countries worldwide, just assumes normality. The famous Keynes-Tinbergen debate about the logical foundations of econometrics in the Economic Journal of 1939-40 reveals that the founders of econometrics did not test the data correctly for normality.Keynes's comments about the necessity to demonstrate the uniformity, homogeneity, and stability of the time series data before any multiple regressions were run was ridiculed as the foolish ,out of date utterances of a once magnificient mind that had deteriorated by the late 1930's.Benoit Mandelbrot's massive data analysis, replicated by many different researchers in many different countries since the early 1970's,shows that the assumption of normality ,underlying statistical price data analysis done by economists in practically all financial markets(stocks, bonds, money, currency, exchange, commodities)over the last 60 years,is all wrong. There is one minor oversite in the fourth edition. There is no discussion of Ellsberg's paradox and/or ambiguous probabilities.Lee does ,of course, discuss Keynes's concept of the weight of the evidence and probabilities that have low weight. Both Lee and Brady had agreed 15 years ago that Keynes's w,defined on the unit interval between 0 and 1,was practically the same as Ellsberg's rho, defined on the unit interval between 0 and 1.In real life, most of the probabilities will turn out to be ambiguous(plus being underweighted). In such situations it will not be possible to treat probability according to the Kolmogorov axioms. The experimental-empirical work of Tversky-Kahneman demonstrates that the vast majority of real world decision makers are rational(contrary to the conclusion drawn from the evidence by Tversky-Kahneman)but are working with ambiguous or underweighted probabilities.

3-0 out of 5 stars Foundations of Behavioral Research
Foundations of Behavioral Research by Kerlinger and Lee is one of my prescribed books, for a Research course that I am taking, as part of a Masters program. 5-0 out of 5 stars One of a kind
There are very few books written that covers as many important topics in behavioral research methods as this one.Earlier editions were outstanding and the fourth edition is exceptional. The new material in the 4th Editionis helpful to today's researcher. Both researcher and student doingresearch should have this book. The examples are extremely useful infacilitating the understanding of research methods and the analysis ofdata. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb Introductory Statistics Text
Prior to the first edition of this text I used a different text in my introductory statistics course each year because students did not like my text selections. I've used Pagano's text every year since the first edition was published in 1981 because every year the students tell me to retain this text. It is superbly written and exquisitely designed. It is the best text of its kind that I have seen in the past 25 years of teaching the subject. ... Read more

We used P&S (as we called it) in our PhD research methods seminar, and I still refer to it from time to time when I need to cite a source in research methodology. The intended audience of this book is definitely academic researchers and PhD students. Although I suppose a master's student with a concentration in quantitative methods might also find it useful.

5-0 out of 5 stars An invaluable, practical guide for students & practitioners
Organisational Research Methods is an invaluable, practical guide for both students and practitioners in the social sciences. This book is particularly unique as it provides the theoretical/academic bases for research yet translates these into practical steps for how to undertake best practice research. The authors highlight a plethora of issues that researchers themselves may not have considered, and provide constructive advice for addressing each possible problem that may arise during the course of a research project. Based on their expertise and experience as both practitioners and academics, the authors provide helpful examples throughout the book that assist the reader in applying the knowledge directly to their own project.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great social/behavioral science book
I've now read this book about 10 times over the past three years while teaching an evolution of human behavior course at the college where I'm employed.I was motivated to say a few supportive words about this book because I have become convinced of its groundbreaking importance in the scientific literature. After a decade of reading and studying evolutionary anthropology/psychology I find no other single book that so clearly and convincingly articulates the application of Darwinian thinking to modern human behavior. It is a perfect text to use with students as it not only teaches a wealth of information, but is also an excellent example of critical interpretation of data. Many of my students have commented on the power of this book to transform them into appreciative readers of science. From my own experience, it is one of a few books that transformed me from a standard social science undergraduate--mired in theoretical mush--into a more critical and thoughtful scholar. The other books that influenced me were by Sarah Hrdy, Don Symons, and later,Jarome Barkow et al.I encourage anyone interested in human behavior to read this book.Bring along a collegiate dictionary if yourvocabulary is anything like that of my undergraduates!

5-0 out of 5 stars Compelling analysis of the phenomenon of homicide.
Although nominally about the material designated in its title, this book is no mere collection of statistics, but contains wide-ranging discussions of evolutionary psychology, which Daly & Wilson use as the framework for an understanding of the phenomenon of homicide. So if the propensity to homicide is bred into the human race by millennia of natural selection, so also are other phenomenawith which society struggles, like sexual harassment. I guess my point is that this book is about homicide and more. It's also lucid and even witty. It reads like a detective story, which indeed it is, but the culprit here is manifold rather than singular. The book will also furnish guidance to those who subscribe to the view thatarrest, conviction, and incarceration will have only limited effects on the homicide rate, and that homicide be treated also as a public health problem. Daly & Wilson consider anthropological data from around the world and historical data as well to draw their inferences. In the most common type of murder the perpetrator and victim are young men who know each other and are in (ostensible) conflict over some trivial matter. But Daly & Wilson say that murder is the rare outcome of a common situation where two men face off against each other with each trying to appear more formidable and dangerous than the other. The(biological) reason they behave as they do is that such behavior causes them to acquire (or keep) control of the reproductive behavior of their women.Think about it: wimps, who allowed their women to be taken away from themselves, left no wimp genes in the gene pool. Of course there are a lot of other kinds of murders: children are occasionally murdered, sometimes by their natural parents, but more often by step-parents.It appears that there is a basis for the ever-popular myth (in many cultures, not just western European) of the evil step-parent.Husbands murder wives, but this seems to be a case of violence being usedto control the wife's reproductive behavior, and the violence gets out of hand. When wives murder husbands (a rarer occurrence) it tends to be defensive in nature. Wonderful book! Very thought provoking.

4-0 out of 5 stars pick and shovel
This book presents the view of evolucionist pychology. These authors have some excellent points, especially concerning social anthropology and some of Freud's misinformation, and anyone interested in psychology should not miss this book. However, once the authors have given an overview of behavior in the species homo sapiens, their theories cannot be translated to the individual. They have not taken into consideration the complexity of the human brain and the resultant behavior, especially the ability to symbolize.I felt like I was reading a book on how to assemble a Swiss watch using a pick and shovel ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Example-Driven Approach
I have taught experimental psychology and research methods for nine years and this is my choice for experimental psych. (I use Earl Babbie's Practice of Social Research for research methods.) The presentation is to-the-point but reasonably thorough. The highlight is the section of 16 published empirical papers, some of which are annotated, some of which aren't. I think that the ability to base lectures and concepts on actual research papers is paramount for student understanding. I recommend the book highly. 1-0 out of 5 stars Worthless
This is a worthless book. The examples do not coincide at all with the APA manual.Writing examples are not detailed or helpful.I had to consult three different manuals just to put together the proper APA format for a research proposal! This book is only good for giving a rough, rudimentary explanation of experimental psychology. If you want details on how to actually conduct research, go somewhere else to find it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hands-on and concise; brilliant
I've taught experimental psychology many times with many different books. This book, however, is my favorite because it focuses on work as done by practicing researchers. The content is well-thought out and is short enoughto not overwhelm the students. The two chapters of design critiques areexcellent assignments in critical thinking. Most of all, the reproduced andannotated research articles are a gift. APA style is hard for students tounderstand, so the expository style helps tremendously. I hope this booknever goes out of print. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Behavior Analysis for Lasting Change
This text deals with methods and stragegies of analyzing and modifying behaviors. Within the text I specifically focused on chapter nine through twelve which involved increasing behavior through the use of positive reinforcement. I also give special attention to chapters twenty-four and twenty-five dealing with decreasing behaviors incompatible with underisable behavior, and to a lesser extent the use of punishment. Mastery of these tools will enable teachers to effectively deal with most of the situations faced in today's classroom.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best summary of Applied Behavior Analysis
If you want to change things, you always have to take human behavior into account. Behavior analysis is the science that does this very precisely. It helps you to measure and to change the behaviors of yourself and others for getting the results that you want.

This book is essential for anyone seriously considering a role of leadership in schools or districts. In the book, the reader learns about excellent and practical science to make schools a better place. There isnot a topic that isn't covered. All of the practical issues are present. Yes, the book uses the language of very good behavioral sciences, and thatis appropriate. With all the headline things that have happened in theworld with schools, its important that major leaders in schools have goodgrounding in practical science of behavior change. What's really neatabout the book is that almost everything in its is doable. You can make ithappen. In my own landmark research on youth violence, I could not havedone it without standing on the shoulders of giants like BethSulzer-Azaroff and G.Roy Mayer.Every future teacher or administrator hasto have studied this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The most accurate and succint methodology for meta-analysis
Several books have been published to introduce their own meta-analysis methods. However, some books have turned out to overestimate or underestimate scientifically important construct-level relationships by simulation studies. Mis-estimations can lead to a very wrong decision. A good resource for someone taking a psyc stat class.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Treatment of Sophisticated Mathemeatical Concepts
I've long wanted a better explanation of Eigenvectors and Eigenvalues than I recieved in a econometrics or statistics textbook. This book gives me an incredibly clear understanding of what they are. Now when I look back at the mathematical interpretation again it means so much more. This is a fantastic book that would highly recommend to anyone wanting a clear conceptual understanding of these sophisticated topics. 5 stars, no questions about it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource for Statistics
In many introductory statistics courses you usually do not cover multivariate statistics. This book and its companion volume are useful for anyone in upper level undergraduate or graduate programs. It is a great reference to have when planning research.Read more
