5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehending Reasearch Design 101
So you want to learn how to set up a psychological inquiry but you don't exactly know how to go about it? Well, this book is pretty good at helping you along. It takes the time to walk you through the "do" and the "don't" that comes with gathering useful data, and it actually keeps a pace that isn't too slow and it isn't to fast, and it doesn't make drastic leaps and expect you to keep up. It actually starts a ground level, showcasing what is good and what isn't when it comes to research topics, and sets in motion a process that walks you through the objects an experiment should set out to achieve. This expands as the book focuses, and walks you through Set-Up Chapters 1-5), Simple Experiments (Chapter 6, Multiple-Group Experiments (Chapter 7), Factorial Designs (Chapter 8), Within-Subjects Designs (Chapter 9), how to read and evaluate your data, and how to pull it all together and write your research proposal/ reports.
5-0 out of 5 stars really good
very very good. Very good for class. Thorough information. Useful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reader-friendly book with incredible on-line support.
A book that helps students make sense of research methods. The book uses clear examples, summary tables, end-of-chapter glossaries that define key terms and explain the relationships between terms, and a very simple writing style. In addition, students and professors can access free computerized tutorials as well as web pages for each chapter by going to the book's home page at http://spsp.clarion.edu/RDE3/Start/RDE3start.html ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Emergence of a true science
Reading this textbook one can appreciate the science in the science of human behavior. Not that the science of human behavior isn't well-served by the philosophy of behaviorism or by ongoing research within the area of the experimental analysis of behavior. But what I saw in this book is just how much progress has been made in applications and how fully the scientific method has been utilized.
5-0 out of 5 stars Remains as relevant today as when it came out!
Is it possible to change one's own life and the lives of others by arranging our surroundings (environment) in a particular way? Any student of applied behavior analysis (ABA) would strongly shout out YES!
5-0 out of 5 stars As good as it gets
This book provides the best text-book style introduction to Applied Behavior Analysis there is.The writing is straight-forward and well-organized.The only thing one could wish for is a second edition, but in the foreword it states they promised their families that there woulnd't be one :)That's ok, it provides all the groundwork one needs to read and understand the literature since then. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent, clear introduction to research methods
This book is a very well-written introduction to methods in psychological research.Goodwin's style is friendly and often humorous. The information he provides is interspersed with case studies, historical antecdotes, and other "real-world" examples of research principles being put into practice.I found the reading to go extremely fast and painlessly.4-0 out of 5 stars Good book

5-0 out of 5 stars A great motivational text
I read this before beginning my own dissertation, and have recommended it to many others. The primary value I got from it was as a motivator to get started - often one of the most difficult steps in writing a dissertation. The information contained in this book will not replace a good mentor, but can be a supplement to a mediocre one.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good guide
This is great for some helpful overall tips and such. It WILL NOT tell you anything that a good adviser/mentor doesn't already know!

3-0 out of 5 stars For those considering PhD process
A book for the student considering doctoral degree and who does not understand the process. Not very helpful for those who are understand process but would like an indepth reference showing the differences between abstracts, conclusions, etc.; qualitative vs. quantitative research papers. Also, updates from authors such as Huth would be more helpful, as well as from Journal editors. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A review of Real World Research
As the title suggests, this book is for researchers faced with 'real world' challenges like limited time, money and the need to address a presenting problem or issue. Its chapters cover everything from how towrite a research proposal to getting your research published and acting onyour findings. In between, the reader is offered overviews on differentdata collection and analysismethods covering quantitative and qualitativeapproaches. Pages 244-6 offer an example of a well set-out questionnaire -something that anyone who has ever sat down to design a survey has probablywished for. Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Just the main points, please!
I'm taking a research methods course right now and, unfortunately, this is the book that was assigned. The chapters are too long and the authors make things more complex by trying to include too many examples and unnecessary filler material.Research methods is boring anyway, but Rubin and Babbie make learning about itmore boring and confusing by not getting straight to the point. I have a "quiz" next week and you don't know how tedious it is read through these chapters. I had to learn how to speed read in orderto save time and find the important information.Thank goodness the book is at least organized.

1-0 out of 5 stars Difficult to read
This book is really long winded and boring. It rambles a lot and is quite incoherent, though I would give it some credit for trying to sound personable. The chapter on inferential statistics, especially isn't very clear which makes it even more frustrating because stats is already quite a dry topic.

3-0 out of 5 stars Rubin & Babbie
This book was assigned as a text for my Social Work research class. The entire class found the book very wordy, chapters were too long and hard to focus on.As a professional the book would probably be helpful for self-teaching, but as a text book, it will bore your students to tears. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Value in the Handbook of Psychiatric Measures
I purchased this book because of my studies in family therapy in particular family therapy with young clients who have a developing mental illness.
1-0 out of 5 stars A Disappointment
The book is good.....The CD that is included containing the actual tests, inventories and measures on it is nearly unacceptable as far as quality. The scanning job was poor and there is nothing that can be doneto improve the quality or change the size.if I had seen it prior to purchase, I wouldn't have bought it.Additionally, when I contacted the publisher, the customer servifce representative was not even remotely interested in my concern or feedback.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for health scales

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Resource
Clear - Concise - Classic! This book is required reading for anyone doing phenomenological research in psychology and the other social sciences.Moustakas is a master.

4-0 out of 5 stars Beyond theory to practice
As I began my dissertation Moustakas book helped me traverse the often confusing waters of phenomenology. I had read bits and pieces about the topic, but he does a masterful job unpacking the philosophy, juxtaposing it to the practice, and pulling it all back together into a coherent picture. Further, he has several good chapters on the practice which one could use to do a P study (I am no longer moving in that direction but it will certainly inform my methods section). So, I write as one who has had the lived experience of reading Moustakas' book and my phenomenology will never be the same ; ) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Second Edition
This edition is similar to the previous one. It is without peer in terms of scholarship. It is also not easy to read and digest, and that's the way it should be for a serious treatment of research methods. After all, the applications of such methods and the interpretation of results can profoundly affect our lives.

3-0 out of 5 stars A good book but a terrible textbook
Without any doubt, this is a comprehensive book in this field. However, because the authors tried to demonstrate their superior english writting abilities, they made the whole text hard to understand for students.Frommy point of view, as a new professor, I don't believe that recommendingthis book is appropriate.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous book
This is a practitioner's book, not a scolar's. I'm not a scolar -- never have been and never will be.I love this book. It's lucid, it's sensible and it's great statistics. It goes thoroughly into the logic of linearmodel ANOVAs yet the bulk of the exposition is in the simple Englishlanguage -- it has no calculus and no eigenvectors and almost no matrixalgebra. You need an acquaintance with elementary one-way ANOVA but no morebackground than that. The authors pace it carefully and are not afraid of abit of repetition for the sake of clarity (something I always appreciatewhen I'm reading new technical material). It's one of the best $105dollars I've ever spent. I got loads out of it all the way through and it'sa big book. The explanation of multivariate repeated measures is worth theprice alone. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Thought provoking in every page
It is rare that I read a book which makes me stop and think at every page. Littered with deep insights and interesting information, and still an easy read. E.O. Wilson projects a briliant mind that knows how to express and communicate his thoughts to any reader. Being a scientist myself (Physics), this book was a great vehicle to learn on sociobiology. Wilson has an incredible ability to provide just enough facts to support his ideas in a clear and economical style. I wish more scientist would know how to write like him. A pleasure from beginning to end.

3-0 out of 5 stars Thinking about how we think.
Since the discovery of DNA by Watson and Crick, a whole slew of fields have arisen in the life sciences that relate various aspects of life, its meaning, history and its manifestations, to genetics.Correspondingly, there has been a growth of related literature. This classic by E. O. Wilson is one such work.Probably one of the more widely read authors in the life sciences, this is one of the more influential and widely read books by him.In short, this book provides explanations for various human behaviors by examining how they help to advance the gene pool of both the individual manifesting the behavior, and the species itself. As such, culture, religion, language, government, and free will itself are all brought under the domain and hence pressures of human evolution. The book is itself quite easy to read for both scientists and non-scientists.Yet it is difficult to read in that at times the book mixes commentary with opinion with fact. Not a standard textbook this is.It reads more like an introduction to a new way of thinking... about how humans think! In all a recommended book for anyone who ever pondered the meaning of it all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thought-provoking, enduringly valuable, & highly recommended
If Edward O. Wilson's On Human Nature sounds familiar, it's because this printing represents the 25th anniversary of the original classic that gave birth to the field of evolutionary psychology. Adding a new preface to this edition, Wilson reflects on how he came to write the book which would led to a political, religious and scientific uproar. A seminal, groundbreaking, informative, thought-provoking, enduringly valuable, and highly recommended read.

5-0 out of 5 stars psychology of conservatism & fundamentalism
Altemeyer is regarded by social psychologists as the world's leading authority on the psychology of political conservatism and the psychology of religious fundamentalism. He has also done the most-extensive studies inthe psychology of bigotry. Altemeyer has submitted his fascinatingpersonality-questionnaire to over 50,000 individuals, including young andold, various academic specializations, Republicans, Democrats, Christians,Jews, Moslems, religious reformists, religious fundamentalists, atheists, agnostics, professional politicians, U.S., Canada, the former SovietUnion--many categories of people. He has applied the sophisticatedmathematical technique of factorial analysis to the results, so as toidentify how a wide range of personality variables naturally clustertogether or separate--are actually the same or different from one another. He has found that political conservatism, religious fundamentalism, and allkinds of bigotry--against Jews, gays, Blacks, women, the poor, and manyother minority or other weak groups--cluster together as actually a singlepersonality-trait, which he has thus called "Right-WingAuthoritarianism." He was amazed to find, when he submitted hisquestionnaires to members of the communist party in the former SovietUnion, that they too scored very high on his "RWA" scale--thatthe U.S.S.R.'s communists were true conservatives. However, communists incapitalist countries, interestingly, scored low on "RWA" orconservatism.Read more
