5-0 out of 5 stars Mandatory reading for using case studies in research
Case studies are very powerful yet often abused way of conducting research. Its often abused because the researcher or student does not know what constitutes good case study research.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent work on case study methodology
This book is perhaps the prime book for those conducting case studies for qualitative research in the social sciences. People have developed PhD methodology entirely based on the contents of this book. The third edition contains updated material and up-to-date citations and case study examples.
5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for scientists, under- or graduate students
Read it to prepare for my master's thesis and probably will use it for my doctoral thesis as well. Brings the detailed methodology for case study research in perfectly synchronized chapters. Extremely valuable information! Sometimes even Mr. Yin has so many info to provide he has some difficulty putting it all together, but after all everything makes a lot of sense. Has dozens of very good examples. I am purchasing "Applications of case study research" (the "sequel") because I was really satisfied for what I got in reading Case Study Reasearch (3rd ed). ... 4-0 out of 5 stars learning SPSS and statistics
Pallant manages to explain fairly advanced statistical concepts like multiple regression, analysis of covariance, factor analysis and others, using SPSS. You don't have to be a stats major to be able to gainfully master SPSS. It does the computational heavy lifting. The point of this book is to learn the broad meaning of these concepts and how to interpret the results SPSS returns.
4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!!!! But the 1 year SPSS license ......
This book is a "must have" introduction to SPSS. Brilliant & Highly Recommended.(The 1-year only SPSS Student version license is a bummer ... many students do statistical research that takes longer than 1 year to complete.) Perhaps the next edition will carry a 3-year SPSS license?

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a very helpful SPSS book
I bought this book based on a recommendation from my advisor. It is a great way for SPSS users to find out how to go about conducting the analysis that they need to do.The help function in SPSS is not terribly helpful, and the manual that can be purchased for a lot of extra money is so large and combersome that it is also not much help. This book makes SPSS much easier to use.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!Wish I had bought it months ago.
I wish I had this book when I was doing my final core class preparing my prospectus.I had it on my 'wish list'.It would have made things much easier if I had obtained it earlier.I read it one sitting.Written in layman's terms. The best book out of several that I have bought to prepare for my dissertation.Highly recommend this as the one to obtain! You will find it valuable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Handy Guide
This book is providing me with excellent guidance throughout my dissertation process. Honestly, it has even been more helpful than my advisor. As many doctoral students do, I keep odd hours while writing, often getting my best ideas in the middle of the night. It is great to be able to access my handy advisor 24/7, meaning that my ideas have been easily acted upon no matter what time of day or night I think of them. A bit pricey, but well worth it for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and Clear
This is an outstanding guide for the dissertation process. I have consulted several other similar works on how to write a dissertation but this is the one I have relied on the most because it is comprehensive and very easy to follow. The entire text can be read in a few hours for a very good over view of the process. Then it becomes a very handy "survival" life line when problems come up. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Introductory Research Book
Having previously purchased a required research textbook that was written in a truly "mind-numbing" fashion, I went online to find a supplemental text.I was looking for something to help me develop some background knowledge in order to better understand my assigned readings.I consider myself very lucky for having found "Exploring Research".The writing style is very straightforward.I was easily able to read the textbook within a few days, and this made understanding the assigned readings in my course textbook much easier to do.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Best!
Regardless of what your research needs are, this books could be called "research for dummies" in its excellent and easy-to-follow explanations. Buy this book, even if your required text is something else - It's filled with examples and can be read like an adventure novel in bed WHILE being truly comprehended! I've taken statistics, research classes, etc. - I wished I had read this book along with my first class! There's nothing dry about this and 1000 words are too few to praise it adequately!

5-0 out of 5 stars Impressive
One can read the pictures of a book to define the logic or knowledge in it. How? Look at the many different views. What scans through ones mind? The past. It did mine. Fifty dollars is just the beginning of an adventures enterance into the unknown. Have a great day! Norma ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply a classic
This text is a great purchase for any student who will be designing and performing experiments as part of his or her own research. For example, a Ph.D. student in marketing who is studying consumer behavior should read this book.As a matter of fact, it would be a great "prep" book to read before showing up to a Ph.D. program (again, only if the research program will involve performing experiments).

5-0 out of 5 stars It's expensive, it must be good, right?
I have used this book as a graduate student doing social science research. The editorial reviewers got it right; Kirk emphasizes logical explanation, although computational equations are presented in tandem. The book is so expensive because it's so thick and thorough.Everything's here.Youwon't have to buy a bunch of other books.Just about everything to do withANOVA and modeling is in here.A good resource. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A primo primer
This book works well as an introductory textbook to the field of Evaluation -- including a brief history of its origins, essential components of evaluation, theory, and designs.
5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely helpful text!
It is always hard to keep personal bias out of the picture when evaluating an employee or coworker. This book understands that concept and goes beyond other books to demonstrate exactly how to do just that!

2-0 out of 5 stars A large and bloated sleep-inducing book
The prose in this book is so convoluted and each point takes so long to develop that you'll be soon asleep.

2-0 out of 5 stars A dissenting opinion
First, I want to say that I have NOT read this book;I have some commentsbased on its table of contents.I teach research methods in education, andhave served on over a hundred dissertation committees in education andother fields (including several dissertations in psychology), and I wouldnot use or recommend this book primarily because of its extremely limitedtreatment of qualitative research.Despite the book cover's claim that thebook deals with "the entire range of research methodologies inpsychology", the coverage of qualitative methods appears to be limitedto one chapter on naturalistic and case-study methods.(A second chapterwhich deals with field research in fact seems to focus onquasi-experimental and single-subject designs, which are not qualitative.) The rest of the book is heavily quantitative/experimental in its approach(there are three chapters on experimental design alone). It seemsrevealing that although there are sections on the limitations ofnaturalistic and case study research and correlational and differentialresearch, there is no explicit section on the limitations of experimentalresearch. There is also no discussion of one of the most commonqualitative approaches used in psychology--the qualitative interview study, which is different from a "case study".(For more on thisapproach, I recommend "Learning from Strangers:The Art and Method ofQualitative Interview Studies", by the psychologist RobertWeiss.)5-0 out of 5 stars an excellent text with great web + cd support
I decided to adopt this text for my course as it is comprehensive, up-to-date, and includes a wealth of supplementary materials that are web-based, as well as available on the accompanying CD.Recommended highlyfor undergrad AND graduate students.

Very good chapters for mixed-mode survey and alternative ways of delivering a questionnaire.

4-0 out of 5 stars A bit outdated but worth checking out
I purchased this book and was a bit dissapointed that there was focuse on outdated methods like mail-in responses. With the advent of the Web, we've cut our client's costs by 80% and get them a 30% better response rate.Just make sure that whatever survey provider you go with offers correlation analysis, Confidence intervals, and Cumulative distributionare among the various statistical measures used to analyze your results. We're using Vista - no other survey tool gives you all of this crucial information.

5-0 out of 5 stars The definitive questionnaire design book
This book is a tremendous resource for any social science research methodology course. It should be used as a stand-alone text for a questionnaire design course or as core reading material for a general research methodology class (undergraduate or graduate). As a social scientist, I have used it to successfully create web-based questionnaires that have received great response rates, which I believe are a direct result of the depth and breadth of the knowledge conveyed in the book.In addition, the text itself is easy to understand, interesting, and intellectually stimulating (qualities that are lacking in many other questionnaire design books).

2-0 out of 5 stars Dry and Outdated
I found this book to be a bit dry and behind the times, especially in terms of using the Web for surveys. There's also not much about polling. Unfortunately, that was my main reason for buying it. I have had this book for two semsters at a grad level. The information is confusing and at times leaves one lost. I am very displeased with the book. It has not helped me in no way understanding the meaning behind behavioral stats. In fact I am more confused now. I wish the book could have given more details on explaining stats instead of so many examples. The examples are find but the problem is they are continued from the beginning of the book. And if one doesnot grasp the beginning then how can one grasp the remainer of the text. I wouldnot recommend this book to no one.
5-0 out of 5 stars A clear and comprehensive introductory statistics text
I have been using this text for Levels 1, 2, and 3 social sciences statistics teaching in Britain and abroad for over 8 years now. Although I have tried using other introductory texts, I have yet to find a text as comprehensive and as clearly written as this.

1-0 out of 5 stars The worst stats book for the social sciences
I hate to be so critical, but I must agree with my colleague who described his/her harrowing experience with this textbook. I have two rules about learning statistics: no one is ever above a review of the most basic topics and an author/professor can never go wrong by providing a variety of examples within the same topic area. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Can't beat it
...This book is the source of all you need. It's hard going at times, but so's the subject. The book's 15 years old and remains the best guide to the analysis of correlated data. It's a reference book, one I value as much as a good dictionary. To use it as a text would be misguided unless the instruction was aimed at a sophisticated audience.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best MRC Book Ever
I agree with the previous reviewer that there are times when the exposition in the book gets a bit intense; but c'mon! We're dealing with statistics. You gotta sweat a bit. That's when learning happens. In myopinion the book is extremely clearly written. And although you may haveto re-read a few sentences a few times, the basic tools for understandingmost every major aspect of MRC is embedded in the text.In sum, this was agreat book that I read as a 2nd-year graduate student in psychology. Unlike the first reviewer, I turned to this text when I got confused duringthe course lectures!

4-0 out of 5 stars MRC Analysis---good book overall
Cohen and Cohen's MRC analysis book is well versed and easy to understand for someone that is familiar with MRC terminology, however, for first year graduate students, the text is very equivocal. The book is lacking ampleillustrations of complex problems, leaving students to rely on outsidesources. Also, the book uses unfamiliar symbols that do not correspond withother MRC books, which intensifies the confusion level of the students evenmore.Read more
