5-0 out of 5 stars Bravo
As a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor and part of an inpatient clinical team in a State Psychiatric Facility this book has been an invaluable resource in assisting our Spanish-speaking patients. Not only is it useful in regards to psychiatric terms, but it is equally helpful when medical terms need to be translated. I highly recommend this book as a unique one-of-a-kind exhaustive resource for those in the psychiatric field assisting Spanish-speaking clients.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pyschologically sound!
A solid piece of work providing surprisingly current terminology and equivalents.Paging through the book is rather impressive, as the number and breadth of terms is enormous.I pore through hundreds of English language journals each month, summarizing key information in Spanish, and I basically keep this book open on my desk most of the day.Outstanding in all respects!

5-0 out of 5 stars You will have to see for yourself.
I am an English/Spanish translator who until recently had no way to fill a void most of us encounter: accurate terminology in psychology and psychiatry. Before this book was published, there were a couple of very limited glossaries with a few hundred terms. This dictionary has over 60,000, which pretty much covers any term you could ever encounter in these fields.100% of the time I have looked up a term it has been there. It seems that a couple of the reviewers here are not knowledgeable concerning bilingual dictionaries of this nature.Neither definitions nor gender of terms are given in this, or any dictionary like it.It is unnecessary, as monolingual dictionaries provide that.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant commentary with tons of psychological insights
Derived from Jan/Feb 1969 lectures @ C. G. Jung Institute in Zurich, this commentary on Gerhard Dorn's 17th c. work complements Jung's "Mysterium Coniunctionis" & "Psychology & Alchemy."It's an advanced book--prior background in Jungian psychology & alchemy are helpful, but p. 21: "One book opens another.Read many books & compare them throughout & then you get the meaning," & this work helps one understand Jung's lengthier/more difficult works.Indeed, despite the erudite material, von Franz clarifies the meaning in her awesome commentary.Per her title, pp. 22-3: "Jung sometimes defined the introverted psychological tradition in alchemy as the art of active imagination with material."Further, p. 147: "Dorn floated over the abysses of the mysteries that Jung was to penetrate."[later]
5-0 out of 5 stars Where are you tonight, Sweet Marie?
This was the first serious modern work on alchemy that I've read, and boy did I luck out! It is a work charged with authenticity and vision. von Franz gives you some historical background on the origins of alchemy, then introduces this 16th century alchemist, Gerhard Dorn, and his inner and outer struggle to illuminate and heal the schism between spiritual alchemy and Western Christianity. Dorn doesn't come to any happy conclusions, but the chapter on Medieval Magic is worth the entire read. It includes a serious attempt to examine the question of evil (oh thank you!)and the historical process of projecting the contents of the psyche onto some aspect of the body. Also an inspiring section on the "cloud" as symbol in alchemy and christian mysticism for the confusing and darkening part of a person's journey inward to her own core. Also, peppered throughout are juicy tidbits about things like necromancy, pyromancy, hydromancy and something Jung himself was into for a while called Geomancy--which she explains in a brief but fascinating aside. The book is developed from transcripts of a 1969 lecture she gave in Zurich at the Jung Institute. It reads like a lecture, with the rythmns and addendums of the spoken word mostly intact, but obviously translated. That's ok--it flows like pure gold and is a great window into this whole Zurich scene and the living body of work that von Franz and Jung together embodied. This little work is bound to inspire and fuel some aspect of your own imagination. Enjoy!

2-0 out of 5 stars The cure for Insomnia
I had to read this book for school, and that is the only thing that kept me motivated to read it!It is informative, but extremely boring!I have read many text books and this is the second worst I have been forced to read, the worst is also by White, titled Advancing Family Theories. This man knows his stuff, but he can not write. The book outlines family theories in a way that makes a visit to the dentist look fun.He covers the subject he set out to do that is the only reason I gave him two stars. If you are a professor considering this book please reconsider, if you have any compassion for your students, however, if you are basically EVIL and want to make student suffer this is the book for you! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Readability AND depth!
Psychology is a broad and complex subject and I was afraid any sort of overview meant for "the masses" would fall into one of two categories: too complex and dry to be considered appropriate for a Complete Idiot's Guide (CIG), or too superficial to be considered a decent overview. I was amazed to find that this book was neither. Instead of dumbing down or over-simplifying her topic, Dr. Johnston instead chose to make it interesting by writing with personality, wit, and style, illuminating her points with anecdotes and illustrative examples, and making her points relevant to everyday life. This book strikes a surprising balance between covering the theories and history of psychology and applying it to things everybody cares about.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good Overview
This is very good for its intended purpose - a basic overview of introductory psychology.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great reading, easy to unstand.
I was looking for an introduction to psychology without the indepth confusion of advanced study and I found what I was looking for in this book. It gives information with easy to understand explaination of the terms and on the lessons being given. The author uses good analogies to help explain what she is trying to say and keeps it light to hold your interest. Definitely a good book for beginners and the curious. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Necessary text, mediocre results
This is an anthology written predominantly by Asian-American psychotherapists for their peers of all races. In this book, they attempt to elucidate how Asian and Asian-American clients may be different from others and how to serve them most effectively. The topics are divided into descriptions of specific ethnicities, Asians in different phases of the life cycle, and special Asian populations (refugees, the monolingual, gay Asians, etc.).This book is neither too academic for lay readers or too plain for academic readers. This book varies on its authors' views about whether Asian clients should be given same-ethnicity therapists. The chapters are quite short. My big problem is that the chapters in total repeat themselves often and verge into the stereotypical. After reading a chunk of the book, you'd think all Asians were shy, academic, family- and community-cloistered, etc.I would recommend that all therapists in Boston, Hawaii, and the West Coast get this text.Still, it left me unfulfilled in some areas. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC, BUT MAY NOT BE THE BEST FIRST BOOK ON SOM TO BUY
I won't get into a lengthy explanation of Science Of Mind. You can go to the great SOM website for that.As some reviews pointed out there are many roads to Mecca.Science of Mind just happens to be mine. This particular book is meant to be a text book on SOM.It's not exactly a great introduction to read on your own.I would suggest buying it and taking a Foundation class in your are or on line. For an introduction to SOM try one of his shorter more conversational books like "Can We Talk to God," "This thing called You" or "This thing Called Life."As for the reviews advising to try another religion or philosophy, I just don't get it.If this is not for you, cool. But what kind of person would I be if I went to Hindu or Muslim books and slammed them for not being SOM?I think it would be odd behavior. And yes, he wrote in the 1920s, 30s, 40s and 50s so thewritings reflect the lingo of the times. But that doesn't bother me, I like Emerson too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank you , Ernest Holmes
Ernest Holmes defines what faith is. For all you people who think it is a method of getting what you want ,this is a must read for you. Is saving your soul worth $17.00 ?

I first bought the Science of Mind textbook about 14 years ago. I had already been studying spirituality and metaphysics for a few years prior and got the book from the advice of a friend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Umm, I think there's a problem here
Unless I'm mistaken, the above review is for a different book altogether! If there's a review of THIS book out there, I'd like to read it ...

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative, accessible, and highly recommended
Douwe Draaisma is a lecturer in the history of psychology at the University of Groningen. In Metaphors Of Memory: A History Of Ideas About The Mind he explores what memory is, how it is ephemeral, unreliable, and yet essential to everything a person does. Without memory we lose ability to perform simple physical tasks. Memory is elusive to define and from antiquity attempts to discuss or describe it have relied on metaphor. Draaisma provides the reader with a kind of guided tour of these metaphors throughout the ages and presents a compelling, scholarly history of ideas about the mind by exploring the ways these metaphors have been employed. Metaphors Of Memory: is fascinating, informative, accessible, and highly recommended to students of psychology and the non-specialist general reader with an interest in the nature of memory and its relationship to the human mind. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Assertive Woman Speaks!
As the sister of one of the author's I am sure anyone would expect me to give a positive review, and I do! Not just because Nancy is my sister but because I have been taught since I was a young girl how to be assertive by my sister and at the age of 44 I now see how vital that teaching has been for me over the years. Nancy and Stanlee have given their best in this book and I have to say that every reader with a sister needs to share this book with them. My personal sense of identity comes as a direct result of being taught by Nancy at the age of 10 that I don't have to allow myself to be intimidated for fear of alienating someone by telling them "no". I learned self respect at a young age because I didn't allow myself to be "labeled" as a young lady when I felt that was not a proper discription of who I was! I was a young woman, big difference! I also learned that I don't have to accept someone else's name in marriage just because society expects me to! I was given the gift of freedom by my sister and her teachings and now I have a manual to refer to when I get lost along the way. I am also a counselor and have found that assertivenss does not only apply to women! I have male clients that benefit from the techniques I have learned through the book! Way to go Nancy and Stanlee!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Assertive Woman
Congratulations to Stanlee Phelps and Nancy Austin on the 4th edition of their book, "The Assertive Woman". They've been at it since 1974 (I've gotten each edition and referred them to my clients during my 30 years as a career and management consultant and coach.) This revised and updated edition continues to be a timely, relevant and reliable resource for women as they navigate the landmines on their assertiveness journeys. The book offers real-world examples, communication guidelines, self-awareness exercises and lessons learned in the authors' work with corporate and entrepreneurial women. (And I believe the solid advice and information is valid for all women of all ages regardless of their work status.... especially young women in high school and college who are just starting their assertiveness journeys.)I found the 14 page Resource Guidean especially helpful tool as it includes additional books, articles, newsletters, videos, websites, and professional associationsas available for any woman to find what she needs to support her in her assertiveness journey. I also loved the cover. Every photo has an interesting story behind it to convey that one size of assertiveness does not fit all! And it shows how far we've come.....
