5-0 out of 5 stars BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR -- BEST BUY
This is a wonderful, fun, and powerful book, filled with great learning strategies and resources.
2-0 out of 5 stars No difference than other stuff on how to improve your intelligence
I am not for sure how the one review gave this book 5 star.First off, the author has you do quizzes in which he does not lay the foundation for getting them right until later in the chapters. For example, quiz 1 is in the introduction and he talks about which one these books did Hester Prynne write, which author composed the Five Bird, etc but in the pages before the quiz, there is no foundation for the quiz. What's the point of them without a foundation?
5-0 out of 5 stars Make Over Your Own Intelligence!
I deluded myself for many years thinking that my intelligence was just as attractive as it was back in college. During those years of youthful hubris, I took for granted my taut verbal capacity, my long, flowing spatial ability, and especially my sculpted, well-defined reasoning and logic. I don't mind saying that I turned a few heads back then.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent presentation of complex topics
As an internist, I am a little closer to the obesity side of things but I found the entire book informative and very easy to comprehend. The chapters are purposefully short to facilitate the episodic reading that is often the only reading possible in a busy practice. I particularly like Dr. Brownell's public health and environmental approach to the problem of obesity. This textbook is a great way for the uninitiated to "catch up" on the current concepts of obesity and eating disorders. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Bad book, but has the MMPI-2 in an appendix
How on earth the MMPI-2 test managed to be leaked out in this book I have no idea.I do know that the psychology community must be hopping mad about it.It is supossed to be a closely guarded secret, so that when they test people with it the person does not know what they will be asked and cannot cheat the test.Apparently the author realized that the rest of his book was horrible, and put the test in an appendix to get people to buy his book.I am sure that if this was his plan, he has been rather sucessful.

2-0 out of 5 stars long lists and more lists
The whole style of this book is very dry and not usersfriendly. The book consists of long lists of objectives and therapeutic interventions each 1 or 2 lines. Sometimes more then 40. It tells you all the time WHAT to do ( exc. [*] emotional impact or educate the patient on effects of stress on symptons)but NEVER HOW .This information is not very helpfull. Everybody knows for example that walking 20 minutes a day is healthy but HOW do you get somebody to do it.That should be the focus of behavioral medicine ( it s about getting to healthy behavior, no ?)This important part: HOW to get to behavior change is not present in this book. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Overview And Ideas For Coping
Grown-ups have ADD too. Lynn Weiss was the first to tell us so, and she brought the concept to national awareness.
5-0 out of 5 stars My ADHD "bible"
This book was great for me!It was as though the author had been living inside my brain. Some of the issues in this particular book did not particularly pertain to me, but most of them did.I have purchased several of these books and given them to people who have been diagnosed adult ADD or ADHD telling them to return it if they did not like it.If they did like it then they could reimburse me for it.So far 6 of 6 people have sent me a thank you note with a check for repayment.I have just ordered another copy of this book for my fiance to have for his own referance since this book does a much better job of explaining how I think, feel, act etc than I can!2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I bought this book, suspecting that I might have Adult ADD.I was hoping to get a book that presented a general overview of the condition, with an emphasis on adults.Though the book focuses on adults, I was disappointed because like previous reviewers of this book, I found that it's geared toward those with the hyperactivity vs. inattentive type.Although I could empathize, I couldn't related to many of the stories about extremely dysfunctional relationships and coping styles, so the book wasn't very helpful to me.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An incredibly Useful Tool for Psychoanalytic Reading
This book, in clearly written, concise definitions, outlines the major terms and concepts of psychoanalytic thinking and literature. As a candidate at a psychoanalytic institute I found it incredibly helpful and useful. If you want in-depth concepts, this is not the book for you, but if you are looking for a quick, clear definition of a psychoanalytic term, then look no further. This is way better than the Laplanche dictionary, and is indispensible for beginners in the field.4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful supplement

5-0 out of 5 stars Jung - Best concise introduction...
This is the best concise guide to Jung that I am aware of.Every chapter is engaging and the author's deep understanding and ability to express Jung's ideas comes through vividly on every page.I also like that Stein quotes Jung liberally to illustrate important points and places Jung's ideas in context.Jung is sometimes difficult to interpret because of how he approached various subjects during different periods of his life and because of his writing style. This book cuts through the potential confusion, gets to the point and also adds value in terms of depth beyond just presenting basic concepts. If you want a good introduction in Jung's own words, then Aion is probably a good alternative. However, I think this book adds considerable value beyond just reading Aion or Carl Jung's other works randomly. If you want to read some works by Jung that are more accessible, then you may enjoy reading his lectures. These are often easier to understand than his books. There are also some nice collections of Jung's writings by topic.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Primer On Jungian Psychology
This book is based on a lengthy taped series by Stein given at the Chicago Jung institute. The lectures are truly outstanding! Somehow, though, the book is only about 90% outstanding. That's still a strong recommendation! Stein is one of my favorites of the current generation of Jungian analysts. He also has a seminary degree, and (in true Jungian style) his best works focus on the psychology of religion. In this book, Stein intelligently explains many of the basic (and some not-so-basic) Jungian concepts. Even if you're familiar with these, Stein's perspective is worth examining. He has a number of unique things to say about some of these ideas.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent intro for beginners....

5-0 out of 5 stars The Classic Work On Ethics for Psychologists
This is the classic work on how to practice ethically for psychologists who engage in clinical work, teaching, research, administration, or any other domain of professional activity. Not only does if offer a thorough review of the literature on ethical behavior, it provides a truly detailed analysis of how the ethics code applies to a vast range of contexts, client types, and vexing clinical dilemmas. What's more, the book is filled with interesting, and sometimes entertaining case vignettes--many of them based on actual ethical complaints. No other book on the market for psychologists offers this combination of clarity and thoroughness. It is a must for the library of any serious psychology graduate student or psychologist. When I teach Ethics at the graduate level, it is the only text I require.

4-0 out of 5 stars Practicing Therapists "Must Read" Each Year
Ethics in Psychology is a graduate level textbook on the subject of ethical dilemmas in counseling. The authors definitely meet their goal in exploring the APA's Ethical guidelines and applying them pratically to the practicing therapist and academic.Their use of humorous "psuedo-psychologists" illustrate well the problem of many counselors who get themselves into ethical dilemmas each year innocently.I believe every therapist and academic should read this book at least once a year in order to minimize the ethical issues that are a part of everyday practice.Non-APA practitioners may find the book slanted toward doctoral-level therapists being the minimum for competence but there is great wisdom in this book. ... I didn't know what to expect when I purchased this book.I thought it was going to be a "dictionary".There was a lot more to this book.McPhee had examples of dreams from his radio show and website. This book made me realize that dreams can be easily interpreted yourself, that you don't need any other kind of dream dictionary book.Every other dream dictionary book I've read said if the dreams were warnings and acted as if dreams are premonitions. However, this book is different, it's more down to earth and fascinating.A great tool if you want to understand your deepest or not so deep dreams!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource
I am a construction lawyer in the Washington, D.C. area and found Judge Goodman's book to be just the thing in giving me a primer on mediation approaches. It is organized extremely well, is easy to read, and gave me lots of help as I prepared for my first mediation. The format of questions and answers is perfect for this subject. The only thing I would like to see is a second volume for advanced mediation, since Judge Goodman has much to offer.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST READ for anyone involved in any of the ADR processes.
Both of Allan Goodman's books, BASIC SKILLS FOR THE NEW MEDIATOR and BASIC SKILLS FOR THE NEW ARBITRATOR, deserve to be read and re-read by every ADR professional and every advisor to parties in dispute before he or sheenters the session. As a practicing mediator, arbitrator and ADR trainer, Iknow I do, and it gives me the presence to relax and "enjoy" thesession, because I know I will be giving the best process skills of ADR tothe parties and their representatives.5-0 out of 5 stars Just What I was Looking For!
As a new mediator, I was looking for a book that would describe mediation skills in clear, non-legal language. This book is it! The question-and-answer format is a very effective teaching tool that walks youthrough the mediation process. When I think of a question that I would wantto ask, it seems that the author has anticipated it and there it is. Mr.Goodman is obviously someone with extensive experience, both as a trainerand a mediator. I am a retired teacher and I found particularly valuablethe appendix "Everything You Never Wanted to Know About the Rules ofEvidence."The author offers an interesting explanation for includingthis information - that a mediator should have a basic knowledge of theconcepts of evidence because we all (not just lawyers) apply theseprinciples in every day life. This appendix alone is worth the price of thebook. Read more
