Demon Haunted World for Psychologists

Must for psychology student
This book was assigned by my professor in Research Method class and it is the first textbook that I actually enjoy reading!
Gen. Psych. textbook = steak, This book = good brown gravy!
Now this is a great book.It essentially addresses the ways psychologists (particularly those involved in research) think about what they do, and furthermore, debunks some of the criticisms and misconceptions from the public about what psychologists do (that's right - most of us no longer are interested in the pathology of potty-training!).Three particularly great parts are the one on falsifiability (crucial when evaluating the claims of self-help gurus, or advocates of unusual theories), the one on converging evidence (i.e. when the results of individual and differing studies point toward the same general conclusions), and the importance of probabalistic thinking (i.e. when thinking about coincidences).

Can't wait to read it again
I recenty saw Dr. Mason speak on memory and decided that I just had to get his newest book.Don't waste your money on any other memory book! His style is precise, clear and readable. Throughout he includes the latest empirical research on memory techniques, medications, herbs.He clearly educates on what memory really is and is not and how it works.
A Fun Path to Mental Fitness!
If you need to give your mind a little boost, then I highly recommend Dr. Mason! Before I read this book I was definitely in need of some mental stimulation - I was forgetting simple, day-to-day things and it was driving me crazy.

A great overall insomnia reference for clinicians
Insomnia is a daily complaint among psyhotherapy patients, but msot of us as clinicans seem to have little to offer in terms of empirically validated treatments.This book gives a thorough review of the causes and types of insomnia, as well as viable treatment options.My only complaint is the price--sixty-five plus dollars seems a little steep for a 120 page book, no matter how well written.

Book Review
Zuckerman's latest work is truly a valuable component to understanding a variety of disorders through a diathesis-stress model.Zuckerman provides the reader with up-to-date prevalence figures and etiological theories forthe disorders covered in the book.For those who are interested inbiological factors related to dysfunction, Zuckerman devotes a largeportion of the text to covering these factors.I read this book lastsemester as part of a graduate course in Psychopathology and feel that itwas an excellent choice on the part of my professor to assign the book aspart of the class readings.

Review of Freud & Freudianism
Erwin's Freud Encyclopedia is a curious mixture of very scholarly articles clearly aimed to impress other scholars and/or to make a major contribution to Freud scholarship and many articles designed to introduce educated laymen to the work of Sigmund Freud. Happily, the latter is the dominant portion. Of some 240 articles I found at least a dozen nearly impenetrable, either because of the technical demands or abominable style. Another two dozen were difficult but not of any general interest. That leaves roughly 200 articles that were interesting and readable - not a bad percentage. As a licensed clinical social worker and teacher, I have studied Freud and experienced his influence in many fields of study including psychology, education, anthropology and sociology.This is by far the best psychoanalytic encyclopedia I have ever consulted, suitable for all professionals and interested laymen.

Comments on a Mistaken Review
Whether Sigmund Freud was mainly right or mainly wrong, his ideas have had an astonishing range of influence in anthropology, psychology, psychiatry, history, philosophy, art, cinema, and literature. Good Foundation Tool
I would recommend purchasing this book early into your program of studies. I bought mine late into my second year of grad school in order to assist in preparation for the NCE and found it would have been more useful if purchased in undergrad or before starting my master's program. Many of the terms include the theorists they are associated with, and some even refer to specific agencies and/or websites to contact for more related info. You will also find a few diagrams explaining items such as; graphs, genograms, sociograms, etc. This book doesn't go in great depth with most items but serves as a very practical foundation on which to build. ... Am I reading the same book?
I bought this book because of the rave reviews and I was disappointed. About halfway through, I started skimming. Most of the book is comprised of tedious overviews of the author's study of her classmates and several other studies conducted decades ago.
Very interesting and accurate book
As a gifted woman who was identified as gifted at a young age, I read this book and found myself identifying with many of the items discussed in this book.I found it very enlightening and I realized that I could see my myself and my gifted female friends in all of the stereotypes described in this book.I would definitely recommend this book to mothers of gifted girls.

this is just great
As I am a "gifted girl" in adolescence, my mother is forever buying books about how to identify and parent them. When she came home with this one and didn't begin it within the day, I began it for her -- having this insatiable urge to read any book I see lying around for too long, and also because I enjoy reading things that usually do not describe me or my experiences very accurately. However, this book fit me almost to the T. I was amazed at how well it described me, both as I used to be and as I see myself in the future, not to mention my inner thoughts and feelings about being a gifted girl. Whether you are a parent looking for a tool to help you with your gifted daughter(s), or an adolescent girl like me who enjoys reading gender-related psychology, this book will be invaluable to understanding what it means to be a "gifted girl." ... Active imagination is a must-read for introverts.

A little too much information
I'm sure this is a very good book, but it was just a bit too much for a busy person like myself, who just wanted to get the bare essentials about how to eat healthy. I just wanted to know the basic information about carbs, protein, etc., and be given an exact list of what to eat, in what specific quantities and why. Instead, I found myself plodding wearily through page after page of heavily detailed information about calories, vitamins, food allergies, government RDAs and other such fascinating subjects, which is fine if you're studying to be the kind of single-minded health fanatic whom other people avoid at parties. Thank goodness for the cartoons! They should market a 60 or 70 page abridged version of this book entited, "Nutrition for Dummies: Just take my word for it- I have a degree!". Or perhaps "Nutrition for Dummies: Less red meat, more fruits and vegetables".

Beginner's Must Have on Nutrition
Yes, the title "Must Have" is well justified for this book. About a year ago, I started searching for a book on diet, good eating habits etc. Owing to the complexity of the topic, there are many theories and many more proven diet plans to support those. It couldn't get more confusing. I wanted was something totally unbiased. Some book that could explain the basics, "101" topics in easy to understand words and make it more and more interesting to read as I keep reading it. This book provides all that. It covers all that a beginner needs to know about. Right from Digestion system to macro nutrients (protein, carbohydrates, fats) and micro nutrients (vitamins, minerals) is covered in fair details. Again the book made me read more and more and understand the core topics than follow a particular diet system. It could help me change my diet but only after understanding the dynamics behind it. In short, the book is
Complete -- the only basic book you'll ever need
I just got the third edition of this book, to put alongside my copy of the first edition which is so dog-earred I may just toss it out now that I've got the new one. This is the best book I've found for someone who wants a solid reference book that covers everything from A-to-Z, or you could say, apples to zinc. If you Fad dieters may not find the latest gee-whiz diet here, but those of us who want down-to-earth, up-to date information still stick with this one. ... Read more

Necessary for understanding "the match."
This book is a great step-by-step guide of how to approach the application essays, registering for APPIC, and debunks some urban legends about "the match."Additionally, there are tips on interview questions/questions you should ask, sample cv's, and suggestions for tracking your practicum hours.This book, however, does not offer much information about the APPIC Clearinghouse (God forbid that any of us have to go through that!!!). ... The days of significance testing are numbered...
First off, this book is written in plain English for those of us with less than stellar mathematical backgrounds.Also, the level at which it is written suggests it would make a great masters level stats course supplimental reading choice.The author walks us through the history of statistical testing and shows us where social scientists have gone wrong.Tests of statistical significance are often considered the most important indication of publication worthiness, or of experimental success whereas they really are not.For instance, what good is finding a significant difference between two groups (or in regression, finding an independant varaible significantly predicting a dependant varaible) if the effect size is so small as to be trivial?Kline discusses this in terms of "statistical significance vs. practical significance". This is one example of the very logical arguments he presents regarding aspects of behavioral statistics that most of us probably take for granted.

the book has good information and is very throrough, but chapters are wordy and could probably be condensed. overall, the book is of good quality.

Groundbreaking book
This is a truly comprehensive theory textbook that covers complex theories in a manner that makes them accessible to the reader. The authors are to be applauded for making a critical analysis of theory a central component of each chapter and for including theories that most other textbooks have ignored.

Difficult to read
This book is extremely challenging to get through and understand.I was lost a great deal of the time and did not learn what I had hoped.I appreciate the inclusion of the spiritual aspects of theories in the book, but the authors seemed to forget about teaching in an understandable manner. ... Great Book
The book was in great used condition if that makes any sense....as described!!

Very comprehensive
this book is a great introduction to abnormal psychology. it is very well-organized and easy to read. great use of pictures, drawings, and other visual aids. it is a well-written text by the seminal authors in the field.
