4-0 out of 5 stars Good ,solid work but....
Myers has done a good job in this book but has overlooked the contributions of past intellectual giants like Frank Knight ,Joseph Schumpeter, and John Maynard Keynes,as well as the superb work of Gary Klein,on the role of intuition in business and general, practical, everyday decision making.Myers definition of intuition as " our capacity for direct knowledge, for immediate insight without observation or reason " is only half right and only half baked. What should be added to his definition is the following :" based on the sum total of all of our past experiences and past knowledge ".Myers correctly points out that intuition can lead us astray.Unfortunately,he fails to point out that such errors are corrected and incorporated into the corpus of our overall knowledge under the title of "learning from experience".Intuition thus brings into play the concepts of induction, similarity, and creativity.Perhaps a better way of summing up Myers main point is that intuition is knowing without knowing that you know. The interested reader is advised to also take a look at the work on intuition done by Gary Klein. He incorporates a substantial amount of scientific study that is not mentioned by Myers.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction
As a tool for prediction, scientific discovery, business management, and many other areas, intuition has been claimed by many to be essential, even superior to other more quantitative approaches to cognition. In fact, there is at the present time a fairly intense debate going on between two camps: one camp consisting of those who believe intuition to be the superior mode of cognition, and the other camp consisting of those who favor cognitive efforts that are governed by mathematical/computational algorithms. The tension between these groups probably would not have arisen if it were not for the intense interest in building thinking machines. Indeed, developments in artificial intelligence over the past few decades have shown beyond doubt that many tasks that were once thought to need "intuition" for their completion, origination, or evaluation, can now be accomplished by machines using artificial reasoning patterns.
2-0 out of 5 stars a glorified laundry list
I find it interesting that Meyers criticizes John Edward's "throw-it-all-out-there-and-see-what-sticks" method of conducting "psychic" readings when Meyers himself seems only to have culled blurbs on modern psychological studies that test some extremely limited function of "intuition," thrown in a witty quote every once in a while, and now presents his book as some sort of comprehensive statement on what human intuition is.After the initial novelty of the first chapter or two wears off, this book becomes quite a slog.A good chunk of the book is taken up by all the researchers' names he throws out; another good chunk consists of optical illusions and word problems that have more to do with high school math than psychological or cognitive theories.(For example: a farmer buys a horse for $60, sells it for $70, buys the same horse for $80, and sells it again for $90.How much profit does he make? And why should I care?I've taken the SATs already; I don't need a psychology professor to tell me how bad I am at word problems!)

3-0 out of 5 stars A new face for an old book
This book has a very good visual presentation, but the content issurpassed. It seems that the authors never made a good review in thebiochemistry section. They still talk about lactic acid, where all thebiochemistry books talk about lactate. There are mistakes inbioenergetics, where the authors refer to muscle metabolism to what reallyoccurs in the liver. This book was one of the best. Now it is history. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A valid and persuasive discussion
Professor Eagleton takes no prisoners in this thorough albeit short critique on the theories of postmodernism. Focus is placed on postmodernism's general theories in relation to philosophy and political theory as opposed to postmodernism's contribution in the arts and architecture. This, in fact, could well be the subject of an entirely new book, however, aesthetics, in this case, is not Eagleton's main concern.
1-0 out of 5 stars You know...
Terry Eagleton has later admitted that its a book based on rumors and on actual readings of the philosophers mentioned...i guess that says it all.

5-0 out of 5 stars a great book on POSTMODERNISM!
Despite "a reader's" review of the work below, Eagleton is, as usual, clear and convincing in his argument.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent material, but slow going
Offers a wonderfully comprehensive collection of current theories and trends, but is (for the most part) *very* dry reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very comprehensive review of psychopathy
Utilizing this book in writing a paper for graduate school, I found it to be very helpful and thorough. The foremost experts in antisocial personality disorders and psychopathy have collaborated to comment oneverything from history and etiology, to recent developments in comorbidityand treatment. 5-0 out of 5 stars An important discipline- establishing work
This book makes an argument for the establishment of a new academic discipline, " The Psychology of Science". In its first part it discusses the qualities and character of those who do scientific work. In its second it gives a evolutionary psychological explanation of the development of science. This development is summarized by Russ D. Tweny in his outstanding review of this book in 'American Scientist'

2-0 out of 5 stars Not patient-friendly enough...
As a newly diagnosed patient with bipolar, I ordered this book hoping for some real life insight. This was definitely not the right book.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book
I've been trying to learn everything I can about bipolar disorder since I've been diagnosed, and this book was a terrific help. It has information on everything: the biological, the technical, and the emotional aspects of the disorder.
5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST Bipolar Book I've Read!!
Short and sweet: I don't really enjoy reading about Bipolar, because I'd rather just live in my own fantasy world.I picked this book up at a local library for the heck of it and COULDN'T PUT IT DOWN!It was amazing what I learned from one book about what I have to deal with on a daily basis. This book is excellent for victims, as well as families! My family knows absolutely NOTHING about BP, but they will after reading this!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very readable
This is a refreshing change: a textbook that's readable, even entertaining at times. The author doesn't write in smarter-than-you "scholarese" & leave you to translate to plain English, but instead writes as if speaking to an intelligent person who doesn't happen to be familiar with the field. I like the bios of the major theorists, and the case studies used for illustration: after all, "people persons" like to hear about real people. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not For The Academic Minded
For the student pursuing a serious education in the field of Spiritual Psychology along the lines of such thinkers as C. G. Jung, James Hillman, Robert Sardello etc. this is a book you might best ignore.
5-0 out of 5 stars BRAVO! 10 STARS! And a MUST READ!
WOW! Steve Rother has written this book which is nothing less than a pure gift to humanity. Spiritual Psychology: The Twelve Primary Life Lessons teaches and shares how vital it is when we are working with others to empower THEM, and NEVER take THEIR power away from learning how to heal themselves as we may facilitate in their process.
5-0 out of 5 stars Another piece of the grand puzzle
This is fabulous. Being able to view my own life as well as others with understanding and compassion for the life lessons we are working is invaluable. I now clearly see that I set myself up with a few energy matrixes and am here to master them, not vanquish them, which is what I had been struggling to do my whole life. It is empowering, indeed to realize that all the energy stamps along the way can be vanquished and the matrices only mastered.

4-0 out of 5 stars great resource
I have looked at several editions of this book over the past few years and am always impressed by the amount of information it provides. This book does a great job of providing information on universities by state and by focus of study. It gives plenty of information to help potential graduate students make more informed choices. My only complaint is a small one. I would prefer if they added a way to look up specific degrees. Right now you have to look up each school to see the degrees or look it up by focus. If you wanted to earn an EdD for example, you would have to look through every school or subject listed. Not a big deal, but my only suggestion for improving this great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Guide
This is a great guide to finding graduate schools in Psychology. It helped me in my master's and I hope it helps with going to my PhD.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Most Informative MBTI Book of All
As an ENTP and avid type user (though I hate that term), I have yet to find a better book that describes the personality types with such depth and detail. Not only does the author give an incredibly detailed explanation of each of the eight traits (Introversion/Extraversion, iNtuition/Sensing, Thinking/Feeling, Perception/Judging) as well as the individual types, but she also explains how each person possesses four preferences rather than just lumping everything under a four letter acronym, and how those preferences work together.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful for professional or casu curious mind in all of us
This book was my first foray into the realm of types, myers-briggs, etc.It has a short personality test at the beginning and many fascinating descriptions of different combinations of the enneagram. It's also written from a wise, yet relaxed perspective, making it very easy to just pick up and jump into.
4-0 out of 5 stars A good in-depht book about personality types
I purchased the book after being introduced to personality types with information that I've found on the net and I really like it!It really goes in depth with the description of the personality types. There are little cartoons and the author makes reference to fictional or real people. It helps understand the types better.I'm an INTP and I've found the description was accurate. She offers solutions to grow and develop our weaker functions.I had the impression that she was biaised toward Judgers, though...She seemed to imply that they handled failure better... ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Not your typical self help book
The idea that there is a physical component to every psychological problem has always intigued me, and I had previously read a number of Alexander Lowen's books, and found them fascinating. Recently, I became very depressed over something in my life, a failure on my part to achieve something which on the surface level I could say to myself it's understandable, but beneath the surface I was judging myself very harshly. I went into therapy and also bought a number of self help / psychology books, nothing seemed to help much. I was having some pretty extreme physical tensions, and I remembered about Lowen and Bioenergetics. So I got this book, and what I can say is that doing some of the exercises in the book, in particular some of the exercises dealing with expressing anger, helped considerably. And it helped where the normal self help books did nothing. If you are having difficulty in your life and you find yourself interested in this approach, I recommend this book. It certainly won't cost you much and you might be surprised at it's impact.
