Ups and downs
I love it, I hate it , I love it, I hate it, ... all right I love it!
My Life
I was diagnosed as Bipolar back when the disorder was called plain old Manic-Depression.I had known something was wrong for about three years, but the lows weren't all that bad, and with a loving wife and four wonderful children, working fifty hours a week, and attending college full time, the non-stop stretches of 22 hour days were certainly very helpful.When I got to the point of being suicidal, at the pleading of some dear friends I finally sought help and I was put on Lithium.My shrink suggested I read Moodswing, and as I read it is was like reading "this is your life."The author is brilliant.

Limited
I was disappointed. It does not live up the th promise of its title. If what you want is the medical model for a psychiatry course or to know what a psychiatrist might tell you, this is the book for you.If you want to understand the full scope of treatment, this text is quite limited.The author either does not understand the psychological perspective of mental disorders or does not value it.

Latina Realities
This book is very informative on the differences in the current spectrum of views on psychology. It gives an in depth analysis on how these views affect different women of color. Some may try to call this a self help book, but I would think of it as more as trying to let some women know they are not alone in their struggles of migration and changing family views and roles. ... A must have!
I read Kaufman's book in a graduate class on assessment and intelligence testing. I still refer to it whenever I have unusual test scores with a WISC-III. It explains in a comprehensive and clear manner how a competent psychologist should interpret the WISC-III. It is worth every penny.

Kaufman does it again!
Nicely done! A good follow-up to his WISC-R book, this is an enjoyable, in-depth look at something most psychologists don't know enough about.

Essential for psychology, counseling, and social work major
The "bible" of mental health diagnosis, it is a must have for those pursuing a career in any mental health specialty. Clearly describes the criteria for diagnosis. Provides better understanding of the line between certain mental illness

A TOOL, NOT A NOVEL
The DSM-IV is a necessary tool in mental health care! It is not a coffee table book, nor a novel that one cuddles as they caress a mug of hot cocoa.If you are a professional, a student, or if you work with the mentally ill population in any capacity..this book is a must.The codes are for insurance rating purposes. This same codong is used for all medical conditions... Hardly a bad thing! People want their insurance to pay!It may be regretable that a diagnosis is immediately required in order for healthcare professionals to receive payment.But this is true of all healthcare-- psychiatric or otherwise.This is not a book for the patient.Anyone who works in the mental health arena, knows that this is not a layman's guide to mental health disorders!Anyone who suggests that it can be used in "self-diagnosis" has little understanding of mental illness.You wouldn't give a 5 year old a chainsaw!

Slow and cumbersome to use. Does not integrate well with MS Word, operating almost as its own software as opposed to an add-on. Online tutorials from Purdue University or the APA Style Helper book would be much more useful and not slow down your computer or cause you (trick you) into losing your work.

AVOID AT ALL COSTS
I'm studying to be a Social Worker, and this software would have made typing papers easier... had it worked. I downloaded the software to see how it worked, and not only was the demo not fully functional, but was also no uninstallable, either with the Control Panel or with System Suite. I had to delete the folder that was created when I installed the program.

APA Help wasn't much help
Not only is the software not very user friendly, including a help system that was not designed to answer the users questions, but the software crashed my computer. ... Read more

If you follow this program, you will pass the NCE exam.I used it for 3 weeks prior to taking the exam, and I passed with flying colors.Just listen to one audio CD each day and read the corresponding questions in the Encylopedia of Counseling.You won't need luck.Well worth the money.

Vital Information and Review Questions for the NCE and State Counseling Exams
The content is excellent.My only complaint is with the CDS there are no tracks, therefore you are unable to stop and repeat a section.Once the CD is started you are committed to listening to it entirely.

Nice Overview of Psychology's Past, Present, and Future
This book was used for one of my classes this past fall. It is very readable, and all of the names that you learn in psych classes actually become people, characters in the development of this ever-broadening field. I thought it was a great start to get psychology students more interested in the people who came before them.

History source of psychology
We are using this book in our class. I do think it is a great book compared to others I have read. I like that they filter through and supply just facts. If you need to know how psychology came about and who attributed to it, this is an excellent source to read. I can say there are times its hard for me to put down the book, then other areas seem to be hard to grasp. Over all the book is a great reference and started book in the history of psychology

Schultz and Schultz offer a wonderful summation of the history of psychology.Many history of psychology texts are large and burdensome, but Schultz and Schultz sift out the waste and offer the facts.Interestinganecdotes about psychology's pioneers are offered, and the social climatesurrounding the perspectives of each school of thought is also mentioned. Move trauma out of your nervous system.
EMDR helps you to integrate the two halves of your brain and to heal from trauma that is trapped in your nervous system.EMDR is a very effective treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It isn't quite as spectacular as the books make it seem, but it really can work.EMDR helps you to recognize that the abuse happened in the past, and is not happening in the present.Therefore it is easier for you to process your traumatic experiences because you don't have to live as if the abuse is still happening.This book has a more realistic view on EMDR in the treatment of adults abused as children.Some books claim that healing occurs in only a few sessions.That may be the case for a person with a single trauma, or a trauma in adulthood, but there is no real quick fix for the person abused extensively and long term during childhood (especially if abused by a parent figure).However, EMDR can speed up the process. I've used EMDR to treat many sexually abused patients.It is an extremely powerful tool that doesn't rely on only eye movements but rather on the physiology of the brain addressed by stimulating it, the brain, in a symmetrical and bilateral means.It is the only tool I've found that can allow the healing of a single traumatic memory (such as a rape) in a way that does not re-traumatize the patient.Recommded highly.
