3-0 out of 5 stars Not a very good book
This book is only for readers like myself, who are so interested in evolution that they are willing to tolerate books which are not that good.Even for me, the authors' tendency tosubstitute repetition for concrete examples was a definite stumbling block. They certainly do not have a lot to add to our understanding of evolution.I would advise people to first read Sean B Carroll's "Endless Forms Most Beautiful", which focuses on the hox genes and the link between embryonic and evolutionary development, and if you have a tolerance for more technical detail, Lynn Helena Caporale's "Darwin in the Genome", a very important effort in tying together all the research on how are DNA facilitates evolution: the structure of DNA makes some types of mutations many times more likely than others. Both of those books have their faults so if you just want to read fascinating science, read the books by Nick Lane.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Self-evolving Organism
To a large degree the question posed by Marc W. Kirschner and John C. Gerhart in "The Plausibility of Life: Solving Darwin's Dilemma" has been the elephant in the room of evolutionary theory.Exactly how does the variation arise that is the target of natural selection?Random mutation does not seem to be a powerful source, as mutations are more often likely to be deleterious.Still something drives the huge variety of life we see on earth- what is it?
4-0 out of 5 stars Not really a popular-level book...
The topic and the contents of this book are very interesting, but it is rather heavy reading. If you are not very familiar with biology and genetics, it will be slow going. This is not really a popular-level book, any more than Stephen Jay Gould's "Ontogeny and Phylogeny" is a popular-level book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Listening to the other half...
This was our textbook in Psychology of Women and probably one of the few that I actually enjoyed reading. Hyde provides meta-analysis of psychological studies in a wide variety of subjects such as gender stereotypes and differences, gender roles and ethnicity, gender and language, women and work, biological influences on women's bahavior, and many more. She supplements the meta-analysis with specific studies and critiques from various perspectives, including feminism. Actually, this book most favorably looks at the feminist theory and explanation although it does not discunt others. I think that is expected from a book titled "Half the Human Experiance." Overall, I think that this book should not only be used in the academic arena but is also a wonderful source of information for anyone who wants to understand women better. I have gained a fresh insight into myself. I also think that any man who reads this book would find many similarities between the genders (that the author stresses throughout the text) as well as gain insight into any women in his life (mother, sisters, friends, girlfriend...).

4-0 out of 5 stars A multigenerational, intrapersonal practical counseling tool
Family systems are facinating, dynamic, and multidimensional.Psycologists and counselors have developed systems for studying them.M. Bowen and Systems Theory are well linked to the development and use ofgenograms in family and individual therapy, for instance. Genogramare used in American Association of Marriage and Family Thereapistsclinical training and supervision programs, and are an important tool inthe clinical process.Medical schools and practices, genetic counselors, and even business and organizational settings find them useful.Genograms, though, have their limitations which the authors summarize well, proceeding to make a clear case for what they have developed: theMultilayered Focused Genogram (MFG).They make a graphic comparison ofcurrent genograms as normal X-ray exam, to MFG system which for them islike the hospital MRI exam, providing much more in-depth information.Actually, the MFG is a combination of the Basic Genogram, Family Map andTime Line, amplified with one or more Focused Genograms. It is aninclusive system of assessing issues in all aspects of a client's personaland multi-generational history as well as present day circumstances.I appreciate the format of the book for its clarity. In the first third, the authors address succinctly each of the three main components of MFGsusing vignettes and rationals for collecting and organizing so much dataabout the client and his or her family system. They provide practicalapplications and diagrams for the clinician's immediate use. The lasttwo thirds of the book address Focused Genograms, outlining a surprisingfifty plus possible topics of focus, and concentrate a chapter on the majorones: attachments, emotions, anger (as an important, specificallyindependent focus), gender, sexuality, romantic love and culture.Thefirst part of each of these last chapters is a guide to the constructionand uniqueness of each, while the last half gives the basic theoreticalconcepts and research that supports the inclusion of the particular topicsfor each Focused Genogram. Though the book does not pretend to be acritical review of the literature, the text is peppered with references, each chapter offers suggested reading, and includes a good bibliography ofover 225 books as well as comments on two computerized genogram programs. Neither is the book a complete exploration of the topical areas but ratheran strong overview, and therefore, would be useful to graduate students (incounseling, psychology, genetics, medicine, or business) or anyone whowanted to upgrade their current use of genograms to incorporate thismeaningful and extensive MFG tool into their counseling practice.Focused Genograms kept my interest throughout, and it was well worth mytime.I will make good use of the practical list of suggested question itcontains in every chapter with my clients starting right away. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The best guide to research techniques in the social sciences
Lee gives a six star performance by improving on what was already a five star performance in the third edition before Kerlinger's death. This is a must have book for anyone planning to do statistical analysis ,not only in psychology, but in the social sciences as well(especially economics). For example,Lee points out(pp.265,863)the importance of doing some type of test for goodness of fit(Chi- Square test, etc.)BEFORE a researcher assumes that he can make use of the normal probability distribution as an approximation of the data set at hand. This has not beenthe case in econometric time series studies of (a) financial markets(financial economics, portfolio analysis)or of(b) real, durable investment over the business cycle. The Black-Scholes equation and the CAPM model, both used as foundations in business finance courses in all countries worldwide, just assumes normality. The famous Keynes-Tinbergen debate about the logical foundations of econometrics in the Economic Journal of 1939-40 reveals that the founders of econometrics did not test the data correctly for normality.Keynes's comments about the necessity to demonstrate the uniformity, homogeneity, and stability of the time series data before any multiple regressions were run was ridiculed as the foolish ,out of date utterances of a once magnificient mind that had deteriorated by the late 1930's.Benoit Mandelbrot's massive data analysis, replicated by many different researchers in many different countries since the early 1970's,shows that the assumption of normality ,underlying statistical price data analysis done by economists in practically all financial markets(stocks, bonds, money, currency, exchange, commodities)over the last 60 years,is all wrong. There is one minor oversite in the fourth edition. There is no discussion of Ellsberg's paradox and/or ambiguous probabilities.Lee does ,of course, discuss Keynes's concept of the weight of the evidence and probabilities that have low weight. Both Lee and Brady had agreed 15 years ago that Keynes's w,defined on the unit interval between 0 and 1,was practically the same as Ellsberg's rho, defined on the unit interval between 0 and 1.In real life, most of the probabilities will turn out to be ambiguous(plus being underweighted). In such situations it will not be possible to treat probability according to the Kolmogorov axioms. The experimental-empirical work of Tversky-Kahneman demonstrates that the vast majority of real world decision makers are rational(contrary to the conclusion drawn from the evidence by Tversky-Kahneman)but are working with ambiguous or underweighted probabilities.

3-0 out of 5 stars Foundations of Behavioral Research
Foundations of Behavioral Research by Kerlinger and Lee is one of my prescribed books, for a Research course that I am taking, as part of a Masters program. 5-0 out of 5 stars One of a kind
There are very few books written that covers as many important topics in behavioral research methods as this one.Earlier editions were outstanding and the fourth edition is exceptional. The new material in the 4th Editionis helpful to today's researcher. Both researcher and student doingresearch should have this book. The examples are extremely useful infacilitating the understanding of research methods and the analysis ofdata. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars the best psych text
The first day of class my professor felt free to note that the text for her class was boring, in the opinion of some of her students. After reading it myself, I had to disagree. The text is one of the better ones I've read.I took AP Psych in high school and the text used there was boring. This textbook, however, presents Psychology in an interesting light. The first chapter, on the founders of Psychology is written so that you can actually make sense of it.Most cases studies of the guys like Freud, Wundt and the like proved to be boring for me, but not in this text. The authors also go out of thier way to make sure that you understand what you are reading through the questions that appear in the margins of the text. The book also features comics and interesting pictures relating to the subject matter. This book is not your typical "college text."I also recommend the study guide. It has self tests that you can use to study for the final.

5-0 out of 5 stars great
I thought this text was great--it provides information in a very clear and well-explained manner for the student who has never taken a psychology course before.Gray proves he has a sense of humor as well, injecting funny lines every now and then.It provides a lot of pertinent information in an interesting manner, and covers everything from theories on development and society to cognition and neuroscience. After finishing my intro psych class I even found myself wishing I could still use the text for my other classes (in fact I still refer to it every now and then).

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Psychology Textbook
As an Intro Psych instructor, I reviewed dozens of psychology texts.Gray's "Psychology" is clearly the best.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful
I purchased this book for a psychology class and I found it easy to read and easy to implement the suggestions offered within the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, practical methodology
this book is very well-organized and easy to read. it is comprehensive and thoroughly addresses all the possible components to an intake interview that one could imagine! sections of particular interest to me were how to address sensitive subjects and how to get patients to get in touch with feelings (people are often too much in their heads), mental status exam aspects, signs and symptoms, and dealing with difficult patients (lying, hostility, etc.). also useful was information on presenting findings once all the data gathering is done. great resource for students just getting started in the field of behavioral health, as well as medical students assessing potential psychological aspects to a patient's presentation and the need for a referral to a behavioral health practitioner. also helpful when creating documents, such as during the transition to private practice or an administrative position responsible for organization of information/compliance with professional evaluation standards, especially with increasing pressure from accrediting agencies....in other words, a great resource for ALL clinicians!

5-0 out of 5 stars Written by a great academic teacher
A wonderful book! I have an MA in Psychology (and a PhD in an unrelated field) and have been working in emergency psychiatric evaluations for two years now. This is the one most helpful book that I have found on the question: How do I talk to a person for one hour and know what's going on with them psychiatrically?

1-0 out of 5 stars Data and Syntax CD with the book
I think this book is useless unless the author includes a CD of data and syntax as had been done by Gujarati and Green.

2-0 out of 5 stars Difficult to understand
Although I have taken courses in multivriate statistics, I had a very difficult time getting through the second chapter in this text.Certainly, there must be something that is easier to understand. The author writes as if he spent his whole life inside the ivory tower and gravitates towards three and four syllable words.I thought that this book would be simple to uderstand because it is targeted to students in the social sciences.I thought wrong!

4-0 out of 5 stars Vaulable for all people learning econometrics
"Introduction to Time Series Analysis and Forecasting with Applications of SAS and SPSS" is the best textbook in the area of econometrics that I ever read so far. It demonstrates detail programme language of SAS and SPSS for time series analysis and Forecasting which make this book distinguishable from others. I found the explanation of the programme language (right beside the programme) is easy to read and make me understand SAS and SPSS more, especially for the beginner of these programmes. Besides the programme language, the text itself also explains the concepts and the equations of the time series analysis and econometrics in an easy to understand and orgainzed way. This is definitely a good tool book for people learning econometrics. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An inovative appraoach to therapy and life coaching.
I cannot recommend this book with more enthusiasm. Michael Frisch's innovative and practical handbook, Quality of Life Therapy (QOLT), is replete with exercises and detailed resources that should be on the shelf of any psychologist or life coach. He manages to marry the academic rigor of psychological study with the goal-orientation of executive and wellness coaching. QOLT ascribes to the idea that the sum total of all areas of life create one's collective "happiness" quotient. From traditional disputing exercises to budget management worksheets to deep breathing interventions, Quality of Life Therapy aspires to tackle all dimensions of one's life: the environmental, the relational, the emotional, the physical, and the cognitive. The sheer variety and span of the exercises provided by the enclosed "Toolbox CD" demonstrate why QOLT has so much to offer more conventional approaches to psychotherapy.Michael Frisch puts the most recent and avant-garde psychological research to practical use and generously shares it, worksheet by worksheet, with his readers.Buy this book!!! ...
