This book seems an afterthought to the self-help book, and a very poorly written and edited one at that.5-0 out of 5 stars Essential companion to workbook
What makes this book so useful is that it assists the therapist in effectively guiding the client as s/he follows the workbook in dealing with his/her mood disorder. It shows how best to employ the workbook in therapy, help the client set goals, and individualize the exercises. It demonstrates its application not only to individuals but also to groups, brief therapy, and inpatient settings. Under each situational category, it provides a session by session description of the book's integration with therapy. What many therapists may find a boon are sample client-therapist dialogues, tips on engaging clients and maintaining collaboration, troubleshooting guides, and assignment reminders. Because of its flexibility, this cognitive program can be tailored to a range of diagnoses. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great overview
Excellent overview of IPT from "the source", that is experts involved in its development and research. I decided to buy this book because I needed an introduction to IPT. It discusses in a clear manner the theoretical underpinnings of IPT, and the strategies and techniques used in IPT; the chapters are peppered with case histories and useful questions to ask and interventions to make with patients from an IPT perspective. I give it 4 stars rather than 5 because I think it may try to be all things to all people, blending too much of the elementary and esoteric.I think this book is meant for clinicians, and I don't think a lay person would be much drawn to it; as such I think some of the introductory information on depression (criteria for diagnosis etc.) is too elementary for your typical, even neophyte, clinician. The chapter on research data supporting IPT is rather esoteric; I liked this chapter, but this esoterica doesn't fit with the elementary aspect I just mentioned. This is a minor critique in what is otherwise a very good book for an introduction to IPT. I recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review-Comprehensive Guide to Interpersonal Psychotherapy
Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT) is an important intervention in mood and other related disorders. This volume represents the gold standard reference for any clinician seeking to learn or consolidate their practice of IPT. Updating the original 1984 text, this comprehensive reference clearly describes the theoretical basis of IPT as well as providing a good introduction to the actual practice of IPT in day to day clinical life. The real strength of the volume however, is its scholarly and comprhensive review of previous and ongoing research in IPT and its newer applications in other disorders. This volume is a wonderful inclusion on any library bookshelf as well as being an invaluable tool for the clinician seeking a comprehensive introduction to Interpersonal Psychotherapy ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Value in the Handbook of Psychiatric Measures
I purchased this book because of my studies in family therapy in particular family therapy with young clients who have a developing mental illness.
1-0 out of 5 stars A Disappointment
The book is good.....The CD that is included containing the actual tests, inventories and measures on it is nearly unacceptable as far as quality. The scanning job was poor and there is nothing that can be doneto improve the quality or change the size.if I had seen it prior to purchase, I wouldn't have bought it.Additionally, when I contacted the publisher, the customer servifce representative was not even remotely interested in my concern or feedback.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for health scales
I was primarily interested in social health scales, and found this book to be an invaluable listing of many of the scales available, including reliability and validity information, and actual scale text on e-file with the attached CD.Not for psychiatrists only, for any health researcher interested in using tested scales. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars very good
who am i to be providing a review of weiner and hess?the 2 previous reviews were on the second edition, which, i agree, was probably "4 stars".the editors and authors of the individual chapters did an excellent job and the third edition is, in my opinion, an excellent improvement over the second edition.they have updated some information, providing greater necessary detail.most chapters read quite well.while no text can ever be comprehensive, i would like to have seen separate chapters on basic law, applications of psychology to disability law, miranda waivers, and contributions of psychology to public policy and legislation.to be fair, few forensic psychology texts cover all of these.while most chapters did a very good job of summarizing the topic and relevant research, i did not feel that this was a "how to" manual. it provides much of the background information necessary in the practice of forensic psychology that is useful for the clinician.so, i think that this is a very good book, overall, for students of forensic psychology as well as for the practicing forensic psychologist to have in his/her library for easy reference.there are a few areas where coverage nicely augments goldstein and weiner's handbook and melton et al.'s psychological evaluations for the courts. in my opinion, a nice addition to the literature.

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative
This book is very informative and you MUST own it if you are considering working in a field related to forensic psychology. Many of the chapters are well written and concise. However watch out for a few portions of the book--namely Chapters 12, 13, and 14.The authors of these chapters did a terrible job--you may need additional resources to understand the concepts. But overall this book is very good and (generally-speaking) easy to understand.

4-0 out of 5 stars I think this is one of the greatest books on psychology

4-0 out of 5 stars Finger paint your way through neuroanatomy
If you loved your third grade art class, you'll love this brain coloring book. The truth is we learn by doing, using our hands, applying colors. Many areas of the brain are involved in what we think of as simple learning tasks. Adding manual tasks to learning the complicated anatomy of the brain strengthens the learning process - forces you to linger over the page and get involved in learning the structures.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful
This is a must for anyone interested in learning about the anatomy of the human brain.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good for students
I bought this book to help my bachelor level students learn the parts of the brain. They found it helpful in their learning process to color the parts of the brain.Although, because they are bachelor level students, there were only a few pages that were surface knowledge...lots of detailed pictures that would be more appropriate for doctorate level. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Buy it. Read it. Give it to your students.
It is difficult to overstate my enthusiasm for this book as a resource for students and practioners alike.Clearly written, simply organized, accessible and nuanced; this volume is simply the best introductory text on the subject of mental health interviewing available today.5-0 out of 5 stars The best book of its kind
There are a lot of interviewing primers out there, but this is a book to really digest. The subtleties of interviewing are slowly and methodically explored with enough "meat" that you don't feel like you've just eaten a lot of cotton candy, as with some other texts.(Of the lighter texts though, I recommend Robinson's "Three Spheres".)Great book. Thanks Dr. Shea!

5-0 out of 5 stars Sleuthing The Ghosts Of Mental Illness
Shawn Christopher Shea does not quite measure up to Irwin Yalom as a poet/philosopher in the realm of psychiatry and mental health. And yet, like Dr. Yalom, the master of group psychotherapy, Dr. Shea is very good in his own published niche, the art and science of psychiatric assessment. Unlike Yalom's specialty,Shea's work contains the elements of life and death. A superficial or faulty diagnosis can result at worst in suicide, homicide, or fatal medication reaction. Thus, while Shea is a funny and thoughtful man in his own right, his book is of necessity grave. Coupled with thoroughness, this gravity makes the work a standard referral source that should enjoy a long shelf life.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good
This book is fantastic! It really explains why some people end up with personality disorders and how to go about having a person see their dysfunctional patterns. The book is well structured with good outlines of the various schemata. However, after about page 70, it gets a bit repetitive. The case illustrations are helpful, though I couldn't help noticing how neatly well packaged they were. Schema therapy definitely provides an excellent framework within which to conceptualize personality disorders.Apparently it is more helpful to borderline personality disorder than psychodynamic therapy. So,in summary, while I really appreciated how personality disorders were conceptualized, I found the book a bit repetitive... For a more 'academic' approach, you might want to try the Handbook of Personality Disorders.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Schema TherapyBible
This highly professional yet clearly articulated book covers the history, concepts, and techniques of Schema Therapy. While this therapeutic approach originated in cognitive therapy, it has evolved into a systematic ecclecticism that includes cognitive, behavioral, experiential, and other useful techniques for identifying and healing schemas, modes, coping patterns, etc.Highly recommended for the professional with an interest in helping clients alter personality disorders and other disturbances that are resistant to other therapeutic approaches.Fred P. Gallo, PhD, author of "Energy Psychology" and co-author of "The Neurophysics of Human Behavior"

5-0 out of 5 stars Thought provoking development in integrative therapy
As a psychodynamically trained therapist, I have sensed for many years that a 'pure' approach to therapy has severe limitations. This led me to get further training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and to use this with my clients - to some good effect. However, I felt uncomfortable using this 'either, or' approach to therapy (either psychodynamic OR CBT) and have been trying for a long time to work out a way of integrating these two approaches in my practice.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Big Help!!...
I recently started an ABA masters program. Learning a new subject can be extremely hard, and being surrounded by peers who know the subject very well can be intimidating. Words or phrases people were using in class were sometimes going right over my head. Although the classes were geared towards learning these phrases and terms, it was becoming very difficult to remember which term meant what! My professor recommended Behaviorspeak. I was saved!! The book was easy to follow, and you were able to look up useful terms, assessments, and even important people within the field. The best part was that the book had humor which made the reading both fun and interesting! I can't wait to try out my new array of vocabulary next semester! A recommended read, and useful guide to help you while continuing throughout the field.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for students
I purchased this for my Behavior Modification class. It has been an excellent source for defining terms.I take it to class everyday. It will also serve me in the future as I prepare for the Psych GRE.I would highly recommend it to anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Behaviorspeak / An ABA Student's Perspective
As I opened my initial text in ABA I was somewhat daunted (and depressed) when I realized I had to learn a new language to effectively assess the material I needed to cover. I was unwittingly the subject of a Stroop experiment - in short, my reading automaticity was off and I spent an inordinate amount of time re-reading the same passages.
