5-0 out of 5 stars Some important clarifications
First of all, don't get discouraged by the negative reviews because some of them (maybe most of them!) are clearly scientologist reviews. Scientologists believe that psychiatrists are behind the rise of Hitler, not to mention other interesting stuff such as, that Xenu, the galatic overlord, was helped by psychiatrists; this is actualy true, so...

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Primer
This book is an excellent primer for a family therapist, and is written as such. The text does not assume that the reader knows anything. It is a good introduction to family therapy for those who go above and beyond family counseling. As a mental health counseling grad student, I noticed that the text stays within its scope of family therapyt and does not stray from a this model.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for all beginning therapists!
This book will take you step-by-step through the process of doing psychotherapy from beginning to end. It is very user-friendly, basic and real. Out of my 8 textbooks this semester to read, this is the one that gets read first because of the valuable information it offers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good explanatory book
I used this book for my psychological statistics course last semester. Although I have had teachers in the past who explained things more adequately, this book did a really good job explaining things for the most part. I almost always use examples to learn how to apply knowledge, as working through a problem step by step seems to be the best teacher to me. Fortunately, this book has a lot of examples. And, as a bonus, these examples apply towards the social sciences so you can see how everything fits in with a topic you're actually interested in (let's face it, few are interested in math). 5-0 out of 5 stars OCD
This was a very informative and helpful book for both therapists and those seeking self-help.

5-0 out of 5 stars Supportive and realistic
This book is exactly what it says - a complete guide. Very informative, practical help is given, with a strong element of understanding supportiveness at the same time. You can take this book, design a program for recovery, and implement it. Or, if you just want to understand more about the world of an OCD sufferer, you will find plenty of information here. I especially liked the sections covering realistic expectations in recovery, acceptances the sufferer needs to make in living with the disorder, and how to maintain a recovery over the long term. A lifeline to those suffering from OCD or their families, this book is hopeful and realistic at the same time.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Outstanding Contribution
Obsessive compulsive and related disorders are difficult but not impossible to treat. In this comprehensive and highly readable book, Dr. Penzel covers all of the most important aspects of these conditions. As a nationally recognized expert, the author uses his vast knowledge and experience to assist sufferers, relatives, and clinicians as they confront these challeging problems. I highly recommend this book for the knowledge that it imparts as well as for the author's optimism and compassion, which are evident throughout the book. ... Read more

The information on treatment in direct practice of Social Work is a valuable tool for our helping profession.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have Reference
This book is excellent! It is very reader friendly and practical; not only does it describe the disorders thoroughly but it also discusses typical client characteristics, preferred therapist characteristics, tells intervention strategies that research has found works best for the particular disorder, and then provides a detailed treatment plan, along with, a case study. I found this book to be very useful for counseling professionals and students. It is also helpful when studying for the NCE Or NMHCE exam!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good comprehensive text
This book was mandatory for a forensic case law course taught by a seasoned forensic expert. It is thorough, accurate, and provides everything one needs to know before conducting forensic evaluations, as well as a significant amount of information most professionals ought to know but often don't.I recommend it as a tremendous resource for any clincian, especially those who have even a mild interest in forensic or correctional psychology.

5-0 out of 5 stars 5+*s
Not a light Sunday afternoon read, this book requires time to think and digest topics. It provides outstanding survey and advanced analysis of research, U.S. laws, and policies across the major foci. While a bit dated, it probably is the best source for gaining an understanding of forensic mental health. An outstanding reference.I feel somewhat odd in reviewing this book, almost like, I'd imagine someone feels when reviewing the Bible.Well worth the price.I wish it would have an annual or biannual update.

4-0 out of 5 stars Journeyman's Opinion
Excellent reference, but a little outdated as of this writing (Dec. 2001).Opinions and recommendations of the authors do not in all respects reflect the majority, or even the respectible minority, of forensic psychologists and psychiatrists.Nonetheless, an excellent reference to have in your library to get the overall gist of an issue or a topic at the interface of psychology and the law.Detailed information pertaining to actual practices will need to be located elsewhere. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Dense and Obtuse, but Well Worth the Effort

5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic
This is a fascinating book on Jungian thought and his psychological concepts. If you avoid being intimidated by the size of the book, and you methodically go through each page from the beginning to the end, you will grasp the extent and depth of Jung's intellect and ideas.
2-0 out of 5 stars dense and yet...dense
I don't consider myself to be a total idiot. I've read a little psychology, a lot of philosophy, quite a bit of mythology, and have a fair grasp of history. At the same time, I'm also open to what today we call "New Age" or "occult" even if I am always going to be a bit of a skeptic. None of that really helped here. Ever read a paragraph and realize that you didn't really get what you just read? This might happen if you're tired, or lose your focus for a minute. Then you go back and re-read it and it makes more sense. Well, The Portable Jung reads like that initial scenario for me from start to finish, no matter how focused I am. The thing is, when I read a summary of Jung's ideas from another writer, I understand exactly what is being said. The collective unconscious,anima/animus, the shadow...it makes sense. Then I read Jung's own writing and can't connect the sentences. My grandmother says it just must be "bad writing." I don't know. Maybe Jung sensed in his own time the hostility and ultimate rejection of his ideas by the scientific community and always wrote and spoke that way to avoid the ridicule that plainer speaking of such unorthodox subject matter would provoke. (Wow, multiply the awkwardness of that sentence by 10 and you'd think I was channeling the spirit of ol' Gustav). Ironically, Jung has pretty much been ditched by the psychological community and embraced by English majors, such as myself, who would receive the written equivalent of a scowl from our professors if we ever wrote with the pretentiousness and virtually alien syntax of this book. Anyway, I worked and worked at appreciating The Portable Jung, reading as carefully as possible. I really wanted to like it. But first I needed to understand what I was reading sentence by sentence. I never did (however, the reasoning, when the clouds occasionally parted, seems to be pretty much what you'd expect from anyone trying to justify what is essentially parapsychology. Check out the references to the 300-something "random" interpretations of a patient's dreams, which, ta-da, remarkably revolve around the idea of alchemy and an Asiatic symbol called a mandala). 2 stars, though, since I did start keep track of my dreams a bit more (however I have concluded that a recent dream involving rollerskating had more to a movie preview I saw the day before of "ATL" rather than the Wheel Of Life).

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Way to Start the Day - Or Any Other Moment
The power in this book isn't necessarily in the DOING of the exercises but the contemplation of these little activities. I find that picking the book up when I've got a moment and reading one or two of the exercises gives me ample pause and brings on the results at which the suggested activity aims. I can say that DOING the exercise does make the result more intense or satisfying but benefits can be had by simply taking a moment to think about the suggestion at hand. In any case, I recommend this easy to follow and effective manual to living a more peaceful and peaceable life. I suppose any book which has at its' heart such worthy objectives as living more peacefully can't be bad! It certainly worked for The Bible.

5-0 out of 5 stars Five Great Minutes
Five Good Minutes is a brilliant little book. It's compact so I can take it everywhere, and the meditations are very useful for daily life.Depending on my need/mood, I flip through to find a helpful meditation and then do it.I have had night anxiety for years. The relaxation meditation has helped me calm down before bed each night, alleviating stress and worry in order to fall asleep.I am grateful to have found this great little book!
