4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible Definitions
Many basic psychological words and terms are missing. Was unimpressed with the definitions.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Awesome Psychology Reference Tool
Ideal for professional psychologists and general readers alike. I discovered this book in the library and I was highly impressed with both the content and the presentation of the material. I have been involved with and interested in psychology for many years. With over 10,500 psychology-related entries, this new psychology dictionary is the most up-to-date reference of its kind available. It covers all areas of psychology including psychoanalysis, psychiatry, neuroanatomy and statistics. There is comprehensive coverage of phobias and phobic stimuli and mental disorders.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Value!
I have never seen a one-volume dictionary of psychology that comes close to this book in its exhaustive coverage of topics in the field of psychology. It seems like every time I see a book with the word "Oxford" on the cover it's a sure bet that I'm going to give it five stars.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent- but not light- reading
This book was purchased as a text for school- I don't believe I would be inclined to pick this one off the shelves and purchase it on my own for pleasure after some perusing. Arnheim has revised this text over the years, and this final version (according to him in the preface) is much more comprehensive. I would say that is a classic understatement by him. His style reminds me more of undergraduate psychology texts I had read. Dense, not a lot of pictures, and a lot of philosophical concepts on the nature of art. However, like all things, rewarding in the depth available in the text. Just don't try to digest it all at once, and don't be distracted. If you are, you'll find yourself reading passages over again.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good theory book for designers and artists
It articulates the way we look at art both obvious and non-obvious. Related to optical illusions and our vision.Good book for both artists and non-artists to analyse why we see things the way we do without going too much into the neurological part of it.
5-0 out of 5 stars the true gateway to perception
If you want to learn why the things are seen in the way they are seen or want to control the look of your objects to build up as a concrete whole, wheter in a motion picture, a paint, a photograph, architecture, sculpture, a graphical design piece, or more strictly speaking, if you ever asked yourself what is a line, what makes a triangle more interesting than a square, why my piece of design looks unstable, and start to think that you are going mad :) this is the decisive beginning for understanding visual communication... Must be bought together with "The Power of the Center" for a complete look... Basics of geometry, psychology, philosophy and history of art are required... ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Resource & Dictionary!
I noticed that the cover of my book version (3rd edition as well) was different from the one shown as Amazon, but then again, I bought it elsewhere, so please don’t pay too much attention to my book cover (as shown in customers’ images). :)
5-0 out of 5 stars Great little reference book, BUT...
I'm a grad student in clinical psych in Los Angeles. This book wasn't required, but highly recommended by one of my professors. It has been a great tool (especially for those last minute APA style papers that require multiple sources), BUT I was really surprised by the snarky tone it takes with the definition of "parapsychology".One would think that they would at least ATTEMPT to be objective. The definition's tone is not would you expect from a reference book. ... the book is not worth much for me;I ordered it only because it was a required text by school I attend.Even the teacher did not want to use it.Not a good information source (searching google proves to much better!).You ended up making money, and that's the rest of the story!

5-0 out of 5 stars Gets better with each new edition
Fischer and Corcoran complete another Herculean task with their 3rd edition of MEASURES FOR CLINICAL PRACTICE Volumes I and II. For each edition, the editors search the literature for instruments that demonstrate practical and research applications. They study and report on the calibration issues for each instrument. These issues include scoring, sampling, reliability and validity. Of course, they include the citations of their sources. 4-0 out of 5 stars The bureaucratic corporate machine called "help"
A clear and succinct account of one of the true evils of our time! Status quo apologists and meritocracy fanatics, sadly, won't get the point, but, for the rest of us who strive to offer what we can to those in need and fight for a more equitable and just society, the book is a clear outline of just what needs to be eliminated for the betterment of all. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Jung at His Best
Masterful. Not only do we see here Jung's impressive grasp of psyche, symbol, and the history of symbolic manifestation, there is a most subtle handling of the course material, which almost seems to have a life of its own. Just when we might think that things in the seminar are going awry, Jung comes back with a clear purpose, meaning, and illumination on the subject at hand. Highly recommended for anyone interested in Jung's ideas and the symbolic manifestations of the psyche.

2-0 out of 5 stars my least favorite Jung seminar
Although peppered with Jung's usual mix of intuition with vast erudition, this seminar, based on a series of visions experienced by lay analyst Christiana Morgan, was painful to read, perhaps because Jung's racist bigotry and unresolved feelings toward women was so evident throughout it. He is particularly adept at interpreting women's strength and assertiveness as pathological animus activities, nor does he pause to wonder at the impatience in some of his statements or the disagreeing reactions of some of the women in his audience. 5-0 out of 5 stars Psychoanalysis and the American Woods
What I like about Putnam Camp is the assured way it uses a moment in history--Sigmund Freud's unlikely visit to a camp in the Adirondacks in 1909--to unlock previously unexplored material not only about Freud, but about the tentative beginnings of the psychoanalytic movement in America and the relationship of psychoanalysis to transcendentalism. Based on a cache of letters between Freud and Prochnik's great-grandfather, James Jackson Putnam, one of the early proselytizers for psychoanalysis in the United States and also the founder of the Adirondack camp, the book moves back and forth between Boston and Vienna and into the family concerns and intellectual anxieties of two very different men to paint a portrait of turn-of-the-century American intellectual life that is rich, complex and often very funny.

5-0 out of 5 stars A valuable and entertaining read
One of the thorniest (and most enduring) issues in the history of Freud and psychoanalysis has been the history of American misinterpretations of Freud and psychoanalysis. Prochnik's Putnam Camp uncovers the origins of America's infatuation with the science of the mind, and illuminates the fundamental issues that have hounded American ideas of modern psychology since their inception by William James. Prochnik masterfully places (and misplaces) Freud within the traditions of American Unitarianism, Transcendentalism, and Pragmatism. In prose both ironic and elegant, the anecdotes Prochnik tells of Freud in the Adirondacks amuse and enlighten. The book has strong narrative elements along with clear explanations of abstruse psychoanalytic concepts, which makes it valuable for those in the field, for academics, and for those in search of a good, informative read. In short, the writing is beautiful, and the gems Prochnik gleans from the correspondence are priceless. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Modern Philo Par Excellence
This book is a riot and a total joy to read. Baudrillard skitters over all the modern fixtures (Nietzsche, Freud, Marx, Derrida) citing no one, instead whipping together confections that result in immediate addiction to his prosaic bakery. All his books glow like embers after being read, but this one in particular sews up a lot of his interests: modern existence enslaved by the eye, history as a mass recapitulation of fantasy put on by nostalgia, the secret as already always revealed.

5-0 out of 5 stars A stimulating book
