5-0 out of 5 stars Great 2 Volume Set!!!
This two-volume set is divided into two areas -- visual disorders and vision rehabilitation. Each of these areas is then subdivided into chapters in which contributors cover specific topics in depth. The greatest strength of the set is the extensive, detailed review of the field of vision loss and vision rehabilitation. It appears that no area has been overlooked in this review of information. No other text in the field of vision rehabilitation matches the depth and breadth of information compiled here. The quality and quantity of information is outstanding and the editors and contributors are leading experts in their respective fields of vision rehabilitation. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars For many specific conditions, this book is the best!
I practice these techniques as well as writing about them, and this book lays out, in a very user-friendly way, exactly how to use Energy Psychology for specific conditions including depression, loneliness, phobias, weight loss, and traumatic memories. When I first heard about these methods, I was very skeptical. But now I'll stand up in front of a roomful of people, ask for a volunteer, and use them, confident that miracles of healing will occur on cue! If you're used to thinking of psychological healing occurring in a time frame of years or even decades, you may be very surprised to learn that many people shift in just a few minutes using the techniques in this book. I often recommend it to others, and once you've tried the techniques, you'll understand why!

5-0 out of 5 stars Works for me!
Don't let any of the negetive reviews stop you from reading this book.It works for me!I have tried alot of things to help me with my depression and anxiety and this is the only thing that comes close to making me feel better! You can use it anywhere and anytime. I am so glad that I bought this book.I don't know how or why it works, but it does, I swear. It is unbeleivable.Thank you, thank you, thank you, to the authors of this book.It is a life saver...literally.

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful Self help

4-0 out of 5 stars Let's Not Go Completely Overboard
Like pretty much anything in which Neil's involved, this a fine and useful work. The reviews of Teddy Millon's Axis II taxonomic extensions are worth most of the considerable price of admission here all by themselves. But after 30 years in the field, I'll warn any newcomers that getting any too rigid with treatment plan rollouts will make you as nuts at the people you're treating.
5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely essential!
If you write treatment plans then you must have this book.Well organized and easy to follow for any mental health professional. It saves me time and allows me to customize my treatment plans for my clients' individual needs. If you own the DSM-IV, this book is the perfect companion.Regardless of theoretical orientation this book will help you to satisfy the demands of managed care.It is indispensable and, in today's world of managed care, this book is the ultimate time saver. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars How Much Would You Pay...
for a book that could help you discover your purpose in life? Exactly.God is not dead and reading this book helped me realize it. For that alone it is priceless. You owe it to yourself to add it to your cart now.Read it carefully enough and it could have a profound influence on your life too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Underline it and re-read it
Holocaust survivor Frankl earned the right to teach us how to transcend ourselves and find "ultimate meaning". He was a contemporary of Freud who was able to take Freud to task for naturalism and reductionism which "undermines and erodes the enthusiasm of youth". Frankl has a lot to tell us about how to avoid the neurotic train wreck many of us are headed for. He points out that an existential vacuum (meaninglessness and emptyness) is growing in our culture as man "Now, knowing neither what he must do nor what he should do, he sometimes does not even know what he basically wishes to do. Instead, he wishes to do what other people do-which is conformism-or he does what other people wish him to do-which is totalitarianism." Frankl tells us "Man is responsible for fulfilling the meaning of his life." He contends "man is not he who poses the question, What is the meaning of life? But he who is asked this question, for life itself poses it to him. And man has to answer to life by answering for life; he has to respond by being responsible;" and "Being human means being confronted continually with situations, each of which is at once a chance and a challenge, giving us a "chance" to fulfill ourselves by meeting the "challenge" to fulfill it's meaning.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for the technical information
This book is good in reviewing the technical aspects of creating treatment plans and developing diagnoses. For a book about the art of listening in psychotherapy, read Inside Therapy, for which Irvin Yalom contributes aforeword and discusses the concept of creating "a new therapy for eachpatient."

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful and practical.
I found this book very helpful. It is clear andconcise. It offerspractical interventions along with short term and long term treatmentplans. I wish it were available in the Spanish language.

5-0 out of 5 stars What nobody told you about change
Change is the ultimate illusion; nothing ever changes. The cover picture tells it all: is it night or day, earth or sky, field or bird, culture or nature? Illustrations of illusions. The only thing we can hope for is some enlightment regarding a different way to look at our perceptions of change. This book offer that: a short cut to the paradoxes of change.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mindboggling!
This is a great book on the mind.It shows us that we don't really need to know the mechanisms of things to make it work.Just like we don't have to know how a car works in order to drive it.The mind is the same way.Never mind the mechanisms it involves but if you do this and this, a person will do this and this. And surprisingly, although most of the suggestions are counterintuitive, most of the things discussed in the book actually work when we try it out on others.Try it and you will see!If you want to know why these things work, I'd suggest you read "The Ever-Transcending Spirit" by Toru Sato.It is a very insightful book about relationships and consciousness. If you get the message, you will know why the things suggested in Watzlawick's books actually work.Happy reading!

5-0 out of 5 stars Whatever you do, don't buy this book!
I first read this book in 1977 after hearing John Weakland speak at my medical school. I read it because even though I was in residency training to be a psychiatrist, I had no clue as to what he was talking about for over an hour. After reading it, I went to a week long seminar conducted by the three authors in Palo Alto, California. My understanding of what behavioral science should be about (but wasn't) was so profoundly changed that I could not do well at making a living in my chosen profession, because my patients recovered from their problems at such a rate that I could not find enough to treat. I had to go back to more traditional forms of psychiatry which were extremely ineffective, but allowed me to drive a very nice car. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The book is OK
If you want basic cognitive techniques, this is a good little book. But these ways of thinking are difficult to have a big effect unless you complement it with cognitive group therapy for this disorder. My major problem with the book is it's total lack of information conserning the subconscious, since the automatic fear responses arise from that part of us. In my view, results will be better when the person combines cognitive self-help/group therapy with fitting visualization techniques. Willpower is always important, but mental imagery training helps the irrational aspects to be more easily tackled by the rational mind. A lot of intelligent people having this disorder is proof that it can be difficult to just "think it away". The negativeprogramming behind sosial anxiety lies deep in the psyche. But it's not what's going on outside the person that's a problem, it's the filter called perception, the way the person thinks about what's going on outside him, that's causing the fear. Reality and real life is mostly what happens inside of all of us. Social anxiety is a type of filter giving the person overlearned/irrational responses, like it's a push of a button. The person is not the disorder. The person is not this filter. It needs to be reprogrammed. This can be done. Rapee's book gives you part of the recipe. Personally I would recommend "Psycho-Cybernetics" by Maxwell Maltz, "The Power of Your Subconscious Mind: One of the Most Powerful Self-Help Guides Ever Written" by Joseph Murphy, and "Change Your Life in Seven Days" by Paul McKenna (currently available at Amazon.co.uk). These books give a broader understanding of how the mind works and how it can be changed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book to overcome social anxiety
I've never left a review for a book, but after reading this really helpful book I am in debt with Mr. Rapee. This is an easy to read book, short (116 p), that goes straight to the point. I've read 5 books on social anxiety and I can say that this is the most practical one, with tips that you can start applying immediately. There are cognitive suggestions to overcome your fears, issues about exposure (what he calls reality testing), and tips about improving your social skills. But remember that this book alone won't cure you: In my case, medication, group therapy, and aerobic exercise (yoga too) are other weapons I'm using to fight sad and anxiety. Good luck.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Lifesaver!!
My therapist assigned this book when I sought treatment for SA/SP.It was exactly what I needed to get me off the couch and back out into society.Rapee's book offers a plan that's simple and easy to follow, regardless of your educational background.Other reviewers chide the writing as 'low brow' and 'junior high grade level', but they have to remember that SA/SP isn't limited to College Graduates. This book is MUST whether your in therapy or simply looking for a self-help option for SA/SP. ... Editorial Review

Have you ever noticed that self-described spiritual people are not necessarily all that easy to be with? John Welwood has a term for what often happens--spiritual bypassing. 5-0 out of 5 stars More intellectual than John Welwood's more popular books on relationship
TOWARD A PSYCHOLOGY OF AWAKENING is a dense book that describes the path of spiritual transformation from both an Eastern and Western perspective. Its primary value lies in trying to synthesize these two ways of looking at reality and describes in detail how each path informs the other.
4-0 out of 5 stars Well written & argued
The author integrates Western Psychology & Eastern Spirituality (Tantric Buddhism) in a highly readable book--p. xix: "I have chosen to discuss East & West, psychotherapy, meditation, Buddhist psychology in broad terms, without focusing on the different schools & perspectives w/i these traditions."He has a lyrical style; provides good analogies (Buber's egg to chicken story p. 248), balances opposites, & relates the 2 paths/domains into "psycho-spiritual development."This book is personal, inspired by p. xv "Witnessing the contradiction where spiritual teachers & students who clearly had developed a certain level of genuine spiritual insight & awareness nevertheless remained stuck in unwholesome personality patterns-was both troubling & revealing," demonstrating pp. 11-2: "spiritual bypassing" = "to use spiritual practices to bypass or avoid dealing with certain personal or emotional `unfinished business'...trying to use spirituality to shore up developmental deficiencies."He states that p. 24: "personality is a frozen form of our true nature" & p. 231: "Intimate relationship as a path of awakening."Per Tantric Buddhism's "love affair between absolute & relative truth," he asserts the need to integrate realizations to actualize them--we need to grow up (psychologically) as well as wake up (spiritually), avoiding codependence while pursuing selflessness. Thus, he differentiates between soul work & spiritual work, stating that the West is pioneering new possibilities through the personal (individuation) & the interpersonal (e.g. intimate relationships). He has fine observations On Thoughts: p. 31: "Our thoughts act as a kind of glue that holds our identity structure together" & p. 190: we get "hijacked by our thoughts" On Love: p. 251: "Unconditional love does not imply that a relationship must take a particular form.We may love someone deeply, yet still be unable to live with that person" & p. 253 (quoting) "Unconditional love & support can be damaging to the development of a child's self-esteem" & On Healing: p. 145: "The full presence of our being is healing in & of itself."

5-0 out of 5 stars How to be Worthy of One's Suffering
Frankl, who survived the concentration camps, writes that suffering is inevitable and that avoiding suffering is futile. Rather, one should be worthy of one's suffering and make meaning of it instead of surrendering to nihilism, bitterness and despair. He uses poetic, moving anecdotes from the concentration camps to illustrate those souls who find a deeper humanity from their suffering or who become animals relegated to nothing more than teeth-clenched self-preservation. Though not specifically religious, this masterpiece has a religious purpose--to help us find meaning. This book succeeds immeasurably.

5-0 out of 5 stars The book we've been waiting for!
Finally a book that describes exactly how to meet our clients where they are at simultaneously assisting them in effecting positive change in their lives! Villapiano and Goodman fully address a variety of the complex issues inherent in the eating disorders treatment process. Complete with case examples, the authors describe interventions that are successful with even the most difficult to reach clients. This is a "must have" for every therapist who treats people with eating disorders! Great book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Eating Disorders-Time for Change, Plans, Strategies and Work
As a therapist in the field of eating disorders for the past 19 years, I was excited to read a book that got to the heart of the concerns that therapists bring to the table when working with people experiencing eating disorders. The book helped me to think about the multitude of issues that permeate our work in the eating disorders field. I appreciated all the practical issues raised in the book, such as the therapist's use of food and drink, the therapist's attire and the many seemingly simplistic but truly complicated concerns that arise in the treatment relationship. This book is a wonderful teaching tool for all therapists in the field of eating disorders.

5-0 out of 5 stars Scaer Has Clearly Taken His Own Cure!
Here's a book that is just superb, in my book!Scaer is a retired medical doctor who no longer gives a rat's butt about being censured by the AMA.Just my kinda guy! And he has definitely NAILED all the ways that unresolved embodied trauma directs virtually everything in our lives from the kinds of work we do, to the kinds of parents we become, to the kinds of health issues and illnesses we encounter, to the kinds of friends and life partners we end up with. An amazingly, coherent, comprehensive account by someone who has unquestionably cleared out a lot of his own embodied trauma along the way.

4-0 out of 5 stars A well-researched follow-up to his "Body Bears The Burden"
What makes this book very good is, indeed, very very good:A perhaps never-before-done truly readable biological breakdown of WHY and HOW trauma physiologically "hurts"... I say "perhaps never before" because, frankly, a lot of what he covered in this book might have been extrapolated from his initial foray, "The Body Bears the Burden", a true 5-star book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful & Amazing Book! But!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Psychology, Challenge your Beliefs
I have just finished reading this book.If you want a challenge for your belief systems, this is one place to start. To me, John Grinder and Richard Bandler seem to have become something of a cosmic joke to much of the theraputic community here in the new millenium. So many individuals here in the United States, (I am in Utah) the moment they hear of Neural Linguistic Programming, their minds seem flooded with all sorts of crazy meanings. These often take the verbal form of unscientific, unproven, psychobabble, and ultimatly information worthy of a fool.
5-0 out of 5 stars Turn Your Frog into a Prince
Most of us mimick frogs by saying "ribbit" and when we say that we usually mean "frog" in the most general sense. We are pretty sure, however, that frogs really dont say "ribbit." As humans we hear the sound and desparately try to make meaning out of it in order to understand it. A frog sound is then generalized into "ribbit," which now stands as the meaning, while the frog itself is the symbol. We have learned this process some time ago as children. All frogs then say the same thing. In our minds we only hear one sound a frog can make. It may even be questionable that when a frog utters a sound, we can wonder if we heard the noise or our own minds uttering the sound "ribbit." The reverse of this is true, that all objects that utter the sound "ribbit" must be a frog and therefore there is no difference made among any frog. We have been so successful at talking with other humans about the sound "ribbit" that we carry it over into any other animal types that makes strange sounds and generalized them into words. The squawk of a crow, the trumpeting of an elephant, or the laugh of a hyena are other such cases in which sounds have been generalized (and to some degree nominalized) into meaning/symbol relationships. 5-0 out of 5 stars NO JOKE!
For those that do not believe or think that this is impossible, think again.Any book by Dr.Baldwin is a MUST READ if you are interested in, or are going to attempt Spirit Releasement. After learning all I can about this subject and participating in, and cunducting therapy sessions, I can say that it's TRUE.After my clients failed to accept my suggestion therapy, I took to sprit releasement and you will not believe the amazing things that have taken place. Is it real? All I can tell you is that spirit releasement WORKS!Yes, this work is years ahead of it's time, but when is it the right time? That time is now as we seem to be moving on a tide of planetary changes in human consciousness.GET IT, READ IT.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quite Interesting!
I just finished reading "Healing Lost Souls", and I must say that I'm not really sure how I feel about this subject. The ideas it contains are quite new to me, and I will need to take some time to digest them...

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the most comprehensive books on self-hypnosis
This is one of the most comprehensive books on self-hypnosis - it covers many of the most-common areas of application: helping you to lose weight, quit smoking, reduce pain, etc.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book for Self-Hypnosis
As a Clinical Hypnotherapist - this book is the first one on the list of books I recommend to anyone interested in self-hypnosis. I consider it one of the best books on self-hypnosis. It is very well written and it covers vast range of topics whether you desire to lose weight, stop smoking, increase self-confidence, manage pain, reduce stress or just about anything else.
5-0 out of 5 stars I agree
Having read some of the reviews for this, I must say I agree with all of them.Perhaps it is less about whether this is a 'great book' and more about who might value what it offers the most.

2-0 out of 5 stars These are student theses....
I was disappointed by this book for several reasons. First, it is not well-organized in terms of content. Second, the references are mostly to student theses which are difficult to obtain for more information. In fact, the author has apparently not really written this book, she has merely strung together many other's works to make a long, tedious book. The problem is the works referred to are not from advanced professionals, but students or those just out of school. This makes for weak content and mostly repetition of basic material throughout.2-0 out of 5 stars disappointing content
This author is an excellent writer, but unfortunately this latest book does not live up to previous volumes. The content was extremely disappointing and read like a series of student papers strung together to make a book. The text could have benefited from editing, it is laborious to read and certainly is not for those new to this field, they will find it confusing and dense. The topics are innovative, there is no argument about that and the illustrations are interesting. As a psychotherapist I was left wanting something more clear, to the point, and less laden with lengthy cases. Art Psychotherapy by this author still remains her best and classic text, I would recommend that readers interested in this field purchase that one and skip this one. ... Read more
