3-0 out of 5 stars Procedures in Marriage and Family Therapy (3rd Edition)
This book is an excellent resource for students. I used this book for the purpose of review while taking a graduate course in Marriage and Family Therapy. I would recommend this book to students and therapists alike.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is excellent!
For grad students and others who are feeling a lack of learning practical, "how to" information, this book will help.Instead of preaching theory, it tells you exactly what to do and how to do it, for all different client types and situations that may come up in therapy.I highly recommend it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very comprehensive for marriage and family therapy
I use this text in my class and appreciate how the authors have provided such a comprehensive approach for students to learn the skills of how to work with families. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An enormously important book.
Physical abuse. Sexual abuse. Chronic neglect. Domestic violence. Auto accidents. School shootings. Unfortunately, there is no shortage of ways for children to be traumatized.Just as unfortunately, research intochildren's trauma and the development of treatment methods often lagbehaind adult counterparts. Filling a major gap in the eye movementdesensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) literature, veteran therapistsRobert Tinker and Sandra Wilson are making available, in compellinglyreadable form, the techniques they have used successfully with childrenfrom Oklahoma City to Rwanda.Geared equally to the child clinicianinterested in adding this powerful modality and to the experienced EMDRpracttioner, "Through the Eyes of a Child" cuts through themystery to illuminate the method."It's like you took a magicwand, and said'Bing! You can live now!" --The mother of a six-year-old who had been severely sexuallyabused when she was 18months old.Clinical examples and session transcripts demonstrate EMDRat work with children and teenagers who have experienced a range of acuteand ongoing traumas, from molestation by a sibling to the suicide of aparent, from near-death in a lightning storm to the emotional upheaval of abitter custody battle. (Additional cases show its efficacy in dealing withproblems that may not necessarily be trauma-related, among them ADHD,simple phobias, attachment disorder, and learning disabilities.) Tinker and Wilson make important comparisons between pediatric and adultapplications of the method at the diagnostic and assessment levels, andmodify the treatment protocol to fit youngsters at various stages ofdevelopment. The standard eye movements, for example, are inappropriate formost children under age five, but they respond well to other forms ofleft-right stimulation. To keep therapeutic goals clearly in sight, direct, concerte language is usually preferable to the metaphoric language commonlyaccompanying desensitization. The authors are acutely aware of someEMDR therapists' reservations about working with children, and they haveincluded plenty of guidelines so that readers can accuaratly guage youngclients' reactions, minimize the possibility of dissociation, and--mostimportantly--avoid retraumatization. (One rule that can't beoveremphasized: establish a "safe place" that can be returned towhen necessary.) Clinical and legal caveats, suggestions for combining EMDRwith other forms of therapy, and ideas for involving parents are includedas well. With clients this young, significant results often come atan accelerated pace. This can be surprising to clinicians used toconducting adult-length sessions, but as one seven-year-old described theeffect of EMDR on his nightmares, "[They] just cleared out of mybrain."

5-0 out of 5 stars I will unreservedly recommend the book to all.
Despite the child focus, I believe this book is essential reading for all who either use or intend to use EMDR, especially with children. Due to the inevitable developmental influence of much of adult trauma it is animportant reference text for all to consider. Any criticism is perhaps onlybecause the general standard is so high that one expects this work to bethe fountain of all knowledge when in essence it is a brilliant text aboutEMDR with children containing a wealth of knowledge. The book is blendedlike a fine, smooth malt whisky. It has a unique combination of evidencebased fact, neurobiological overview, exellent clinical case description, instruction and anecdote based on many years of skilled experience with arare style that makes it extremely palatable, with continued satisfactionwhen you resample it. The hallmarks of true expertise were met by theauthors' conversion of complexity to simplicity with minimal loss of data.Tinker & Wilson are a rare hybrid of 'gifted researcher andcompassionate, effective clinician' who have given generously of their timeto fellow professionals and patients. I will unreservedly recommend thebook to all. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Some good ideas presented by a fruitcake.
Firstly, I do agree that most people do not get sufficient water during the day.Drinking more water, and being hydrated, is a good thing and does help with a number of issues. However, this doctor is saying that water can cure you of a number of diseases that it just won't.
5-0 out of 5 stars LOVE this Book!
This book has remarkable research and amazing spiritual confirmation for the channeled information that I received about water. Since incorporating the wisdom from this book and Dr. B's many other books of which I have many of them and have read them all, and also through the messages I received confirming these messages through Dr. B's books, I have lost two dress sizes, 2 shoe sizes all without even trying! I have also incorporated Dr. B's books, along with my own research, and spiritual messages into a new book I just published ~ Stepping Into Spiritual Oneness available at [...] and here on amazon within the next few weeks. As a fellow doctor, author of two books myself, I surely have enjoyed reading and learning from this book and highly recommend it!:) It is the fountain of youth that we all have been looking for; a fountain of youth that is free from being found within an age-defying cream or diet pills, but through what we are made of ~ Water!

4-0 out of 5 stars Manual for becoming an adult
I have yet to give 5 stars to a book because, in my view, a 5 star book is one I would recommend to everyone. My holding back a star on this book is merely because it is presented in a "self-help" format. There's great stuff in this book, without a doubt. But some people -- perhaps the ones who may need to know about transactional analysis the most -- are not so open to exercises that are "touchy-feely."
5-0 out of 5 stars Scary
You'll find yourself in this book so many times it's not funny, and helps you alot.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent breakdown of cognitive techniques
McMullin does an excellent job of taking a fluid process such as therapy and breaking it down into its component parts.McMullin demystifies therapy by breaking the techniques down they are more easily applied in practice. For each technique there are real life examples and application, research and his personal thoughts on the effectiveness of the technique.McMullin also refuses to get lost in the technique and also describes the mechanism of faulty automatic thoughts in excellent detail. This book is designed for especially for professionals, students, but might also be useful to someone who is actively involved in psychology as a client or significant other to someone in therapy. After having read this book I felt much more confident that I would be able to handle situations in my private practice.

5-0 out of 5 stars A useful and practical text on cognitive therapy

5-0 out of 5 stars How to Say No to a Stubborn Habit
Excellent guidelines for breaking any stubborn. Well written and supported throughout with scripture references. I found the suggested applications especially helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than you think!
I picked this book up on one of those turnstile book bins at the store. The one I picked up was a compact version and I don't think I expected much. However this is by far one of the best books.I personally picked it up to help me with an eating disorder of compulsive overeating. It could be anything though from a serious addiction to something small. It isn't just surface fluff which a lot of books on this subject are mostly full of in my opinion. So many books promise help but go no deeper than turn it over to God.How many times haven't we heard "turn it over to God and He will deliver you"..Well it isn't that cut and dry.How many times have we all sat in church and heard the pastor say that we just need to ask God for strength and we will be freed. For years I wondered why that just isn't working for me? This book is not fluff. It goes into depth and explains a lot on why we may not be getting the help we need or why we may not be accessing the power we need to help us.It is well worth the money and good enough to reread over and over.

5-0 out of 5 stars How to say no to a stubborn habit
I am in the process of reading this book which I borrowed from my Church library. It has really opened my eyes to what a habit is and how to "overcome" one. This book has been so enlightening to me that Iam going to purchase my own copy and one for a friend! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The importance of inner development
I have read others books of Dr. Weiss and the messages given by the Masters made me acknowledge the importance of spiritual development. We are here to learn and improve ourselves until we get close to God. I hope I can learn my lesson in this life and keep improving myself! We are eternal in spirit!

4-0 out of 5 stars This book will change your perception of life and death!
Inside this book, Dr. Weiss explored the reality of reincarnation and past lives. I understand that there are many people, including myself, who have great reservations about past lives, life after death and NDEs. However, Dr Weiss is definitely not a psychic but a strong believer in science. Since he had revealed so many real experiences of his patients in this book, I think we can no longer reject these bizarre occurrences as made-up stories or mere hallucination. If Dr. Weiss is right, then death is not the end and our souls are immortal, experiencing life after life! Dr. Weiss even claimed that many physical and emotional problems such as asthma, neck pains, depression and phobias have their roots in our past lives. We can heal them if we face the problem-causing events in our past lives once again through regression therapy. Some people even consult Dr. Weiss to find out the cause of their marital and relationship problems from their past lives. Dr. Weiss' theory for this is: Once we re-experience the traumatic event, our minds learn to accept it with more understanding and forgiveness, thus our minds and bodies will be healed simultaneously. Dr. Weiss also descibed some of his own past lives in this book. The irony is, in one of his past lives, he was tortured to death for preaching the forbidden belief of reincarnation to the public. This book is indeed very thought-provoking and may even change your understanding about the meanings of life.

5-0 out of 5 stars There is so much more to life...
I admit to reading anything and everything by Weiss, so maybe I'm biased but I loved this book. He tells us how to reach into the depths of our soul to transform our everyday life.I find inspiration in all of his books and recommend them highly! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great way to get started on understanding family
I have been recommending this book to friends and colleagues who are struggling with family issues. It is easy to read, and yet raises very relevant and practical questions. This is the perfect bridge between the most powerful academic ideas, and practical steps for anyone to take to understand themselves, and create better relationships with their family.5-0 out of 5 stars Differentiation - a key to being and giving
I read this book on the advice of a wonderful counselor. What I found most remarkable was that the Family Systems approach confirms the crucial importance of fathers in our lives, both as men and women. It seems that in our desire to correct the injustices commited against women by selfish and angry men, we have gone too far and ignored the fact that a father's love is vitally important for both men and women to find wholeness. This book doesn't give all the answers, but it is a step towards finding healing for our brokenness and the freedom to freely give of ourselves to loved ones, friends, and all those in need around us.A good follow up read to this book is Leanne Payne's "Crisis in Masculinity".

1-0 out of 5 stars Brief and superficial
Disappointing in its brevity, this book is little more than a pamphlet. Despite purporting to address issues of birth order, this book providesonly a few pages on the entire topic, and covers the entire realm ofpossible "middle" children in less than two pages, without evenbothering to address the issue of gender, which are at least mentioned forother birth positions.Furthermore, it claims middle children are likelyto be "confused about their identity", "less likely to takethe initiative or think independently", "the lowest achieversacademically and the least likely in a family to go to college","often feel that life is unfair", "become self destructiveby becoming a gang member or a petty criminal (but rarely a big-timecrook).Often they will just develop annoying habits".Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Splendid Refence Manual- Are there more stars to allot?
This book has a long life and times immemorial it has been splendid with upto date coverage on various areas. It is just not ideal but mandatory for postgraduates who always need to update their knowledge . What is unique about the book is that the authors of various chapters are from all over the world and are pioneers in their field. Each year a new author is selected to write his views on a particular disease. I have been reading this book from my undergraduate days and I hope my students will follow me . Can this book be restricted to cover only topics in Internal Medicine? Only Professor Robert ERakel has to ponder on this aspect and if this is done, this will make the book an ideal supplementary text for Internal Medicine postgraduates. The online version is an added attractive feature of the textbook.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly clinically relevant
As a 2nd year psychiatry resident, I only recently discovered this text, however, am finding it incredibly helpful in understanding my patients.Although there are currently no plans for an updated edition (per the publisher as of November 2005), the material is still very relevant as far as the developmental effects of traumatic stress.I would highly recommend this to anyone who works with patients with PTSD.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for Intl field work with trauma
I recently worked with Kosovar refugees in Montenegro during the war in Kosovo and found this book to be invaluable in my efforts to determine what has been shown to work in the field and how to conceptualize the staging ofinterventions needed within a cultural context.I highly recommend thisbook to anyone working with trauma that results from ethno-politicalwarfare.

4-0 out of 5 stars State of the art in Traumatic sSress
Van der Kolk, McFarlane and Weisarth are world leaders on the nature of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD).In this volume they bring together a wide range of authors to present the historical development of and current approaches to the treatment of the ongoing effects of traumatic experience. There are 25 chapters which address thehistorical developments, acute reactions to and adaptation to trauma, the mechanisms of memory, social and cultural issues and, most importantly, treatment. Recent developments in treatment are critically reviewed, including reference to the popular Eye Movement Desensitisation, but Thought Field Therapy is too new to be included. This is not a book for those looking for `quick fix' solutions or a `how to' manual for the treatment of trauma. Rather it provides serious theoretical and research perspectives that might underpin professional practice. In this sense it is a fair representation of the state of knowledge on PTSD, a concept which provides a window for viewing and treating the effects of exposure to trauma. Having explored the current state of clinical knowledge however, the editors acknowledge that there are `aspects of the experience of trauma that cannot be captured in medical and scientific models' and argue that `in reality people are left to grapple with the human dimensions of traumatic experience'.They conclude that `beneath the tidiness of emotional distancing and scientific classification lie the human vitality and energy to struggle against, and to create meaning out of, what appears to be random cruelty and fate'.The reader is left to ponder what the role of the researcher and clinician is in challenging the conditions and social contexts of the tragedy and violence that we observe daily in our world. If there is any criticism, the text could perhaps have been grounded in more case presentations that would allow the reader an insight into the complex process of grappling with and unravelling the experience of trauma and its consequences. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A must buy for someone who dislike's their Homosexuality
Im 27 years old and a patient in therapy for almost 1 year now. I found this book useful and encouraging because it supports my thoughts that ( I never accepted nor will i accept being Gay).
1-0 out of 5 stars This book should be burned
The people who write this sort of gay-bashing stuff under the guise of clinical therapy should lose thier credentials. This is damaging.Go buy last season's DVD of "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" and tell your mom you'll be her fashion consultant forever.Don't buy this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Reparative Therapy is harmful, I've been there
I was heavily involved in reparative therapy for many years.I was their perfect candidate (virgin, "straight-acting", etc).No one wanted to change more than me, and no one worked harder than me.
