5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant!
The Hakomi Method, created by Ron Kurtz, is a beautifully constructed experiential therapeutic process which incorporates the best of the last 100 or so years of psychotherapeutic study. It integrates Taoist and Buddhist Principles with Western Theory and the Body-Centered Wisdom of Alexander Lowen, John Pierrakos, Hector Prestera and others.I've been a therapist for over 16 years and the Hakomi Method has now become the main influence inmy work. Ron's five principles: Mindfulness, Non-violence,Organicity, Unity and Mind-Body Wholism, insure not only change in a person's behavioral patterns, but in their soul as well. It is creative, effective and heartfelt. It is a pleasure to practice therapy this way. I highly recommend this book for anyone in the healing professions. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Man Behind the Curtain
If you have read "A Rational Guide to Living" and still consider it somewhat of a "self help" book (with all of the negative connotations that carries), but really want to understand REBT, then I can highly recommend this book.It makes a convincing case for the relevance of this type of therapy, offers no panacea, yet at the same time provides much insight into the methods, challenges, strengths, and shortcomings of Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy.
5-0 out of 5 stars Change Destructive Beliefs to Heal and Reclaim Happiness
Albert Ellis wrote a goldmine of a book to help people and therapists heal those who are in pain with destructive beliefs, post traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, marriage and family, jealousy, OCD, and many other difficulties that CAN be healed. It requires commitment and dedication on the part of the individual to want to heal.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference for students of Psychology/Counseling
This book is a great documentation reference for those just going into the field of counseling.I've used the examples in this book in numerous assignments, and learning to document assessments, diagnoses and notes.I highly recommend it for those in school or having just graduated and needing guidance in documentation.

2-0 out of 5 stars It's OK
I found the book to be slightly outdated. I would, at minimum, conduct a search of other books on the same topic before purchasing this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars best clinical documentation book I have read
Clinical documentation is critical for mental health professionals. This book is the best I've read on this topic. It discusses elements that need to be in the progress notes of a mental health professionals, and different formats for doing progress notes. It is a guide that is practical and legally savvy. 5-0 out of 5 stars Essential
A life-changing (and life-saving) book. I read it and tried it - and it worked. I've been using it ever since, as have friends. It should be part of every educational syllabus.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Yet On the Subject
I am a hypnotherapist and have read many books on the subject of past life therapy and I think this is the best yet.Woolger presents a more realistic account of past life therapy than some of the other quick fix books that are out there.Unlike others I've read, he doesn't claim that simply recalling a past life cures you of your ills.Instead, he conveys his experience as a therapist, that regression therapy is often a long and challenging process, though one with rich rewards. One thing I especially like about his techniques is his emphasis on incorperating the body into the regression, as that is where much of the trauma is held. While some therapists recommend taking an "observer" position while reliving a trauma, he encourages his clients to reexperience it as much as possible and considers emotional and physical catharsis as keys to healing. It is an enlightening and inspiring book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The REAL thing!!
After reading what is poular today as well as past writers (not naming names) I find that Dr Woolgers work is the most comprehensive approach to Past Life Therapy available. While many using hypnosis place an emphasis on recovering the memory, Dr Woolger's expereince is that the memory is the least difficult part of regression process, guiding the traumatic expereince and wound to the soul to resolution and healing is the cornerstone of his work. This is the piece, personally that I see lacking in other approaches. His work is founded in sound psychological AND spiritual principles and the ability to synthesize this and make it practical and accessable is clear in this book. After reading this book I had the ability to do some training with him personally and would recommend any serious student of this kind of work to try to do the same. At the very least, refer to this book as both pioneering and a classic in the field. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars more practical than many other bpd resources
this book, in my opinion, is more practical than many other resources available for treating borderline personality disorder.for the most part, it is written at a level that the majority of individuals with bpd can understand.i think that the exercises are well thought out and, based on feedback, seem to be quite helpful for patients.it is respectful to the individual yet challenging.while i didn't find everything i needed - it wasn't exhaustive - i found most everything, almost all exercises were beneficial.the modification of linehan's intensive dbt (that is, weekly individual AND lengthy group sessions) to the private practice environment regulated by managed care (that is, limited #s of sessions) is a challenging hurtle that begins to be chiseled away in this book.for any behavioral / mental health professional frustrated with the difficulties encountered in helping folks with bpd, this book is a very good resource.i recommend that professionals peruse it before buying it just to make sure they like it, as i did.it's different than most self-help books for folks with bpd, and i think that, while individuals with bpd may benefit from most of this book, it is best if augmented with individual and group therapy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dialectical Behavior Therapy in Private Practice
Practical and useful tools to use in the therapeutic situation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book, DBT for disorders other than BPD

5-0 out of 5 stars I loved this book!
It was one of a few required texts for a Buddhism class. I chose it because I have an interest in psychology, particularly the psychodynamic perspective (unconscious motivation) and this book added to my life in such a way! I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to learn about Buddhism and freeing one's "self" from the limitations of convention.I don't agree with everything in it, but this is a book for my collection, definitely.

5-0 out of 5 stars A remarkable blend of Buddhism and psychology
The first chapter of this book alone is worth the purchase price.I have it dogeared, and refer back to it frequently. The author uses the Buddhist Wheel of Life as a metaphor for states of pschological suffering. His explanations are both clear and intriguing. This book will interest students of psychology and Buddhism alike.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
I think this book is an absolutely wonderful introduction to a particular subset of Buddhist philosophy, and done so in such a way that it may benefit our own lives as well as the academic and practices of psychology today.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Reiki Is truly the life force
Recently while searching for some music, I came across Steve Murray's DVD programs for attunement. First impression was that, this must be fake. As it was in total contradiction to the learning's I learnt during my Reiki 2nd degree in India. I went on to read the reviews and none of the reviews were negative. All people including some Reiki masters were in praises for Steve's program. I took the chance and ordered his first book, 1st cd and DVD attunement for 2nd degree. I wanted to take this again for reinforcement and to give my wife 2nd degree who was a 1st degree. (My intention was to try his claim first before I venture into a master attunement of Reiki through DVD)
5-0 out of 5 stars Get this book!
Steve Murray's commitment to making Reiki training easily available to everyone is a blessing! I have copies of several of his books, including this one, as well as the Reiki Master Attunement DVD. Having experience as a Level 2 Reiki practitioner prior to obtaining Steve's material, I was amazed to find much of what I struggled with and wondered about, explained in his easy to understand books with great photos! I already had other Reiki books, but Steve's are much more helpful. Don't let any critics tell you that Steve can't teach Reiki through books and DVDs. Energy has no limits. Upon completing my Reiki Master Attunement with his DVD, my abilities to use Reiki for healing, channeling and psychic connections were greatly enhanced within just a few days. Steve's books are great- down to earth and easy to understand. If you want to learn about Reiki, start with Steve Murray!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Real McCoy
In a "spiritual marketplace" rife with fraud and misrepresentation, Steve's 3 books (Reiki Ultimate Guides) and dvd attunements deliver the goods. Though initially skeptical, I've taken the Reiki degree attunements with satisfying results. It is actually possible, with the proper intent, to channel reiki successfully after being attuned via dvd. I experienced an impressive array of phenomena while channeling, especially using the symbols. Even long distance healing and beaming worked surprisingly well. The Ultimate Reiki Guides contained, in very clear, plain language, the steps necessary to take attunements and (Master degree) to give them. They also explicitly describe many different techniques for channeling Reiki (for yourself and others), both with and without props (crystals, stones). Taken as a whole, the books and dvds are probably the most detailed, cost-effective means of thoroughly learning and being initiated into Reiki currently available. Kudos to Steve Murray for making genuine Reiki attunements and knowledge available to such a wide audience.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book demystifies mental illness
As a worker in the field of 'mental health', I found this book to be invaluable in demystifying mental illness and assisting clients in learning about themselves using everyday language they can understand, not the psycho mobo jumbo utilized by psychiatry (to keep people oppressed and thinking they cannot cure themselves)This book, almost 30 years old, is probably more relevant today, particularly as the legions of 'rescuers' become more prevalent in society, i.e. therapists, counselors, probation officers, and all those in favor of the medicalization of behaviors. The books basic premise, that people can solve their own problems and get better on their own by redeciding, is both true and a threat to those who purport otherwise. For further in depth education in demystification, I recommend reading Thomas Szasz.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent Scientific analysis and exegesis of TA
Claude M.Steiner shows great respect to the late E.Berne and analyzes properly and with solid argumentation the Transactional Analysis in a very approachable way. It is very pleasant to read and it is full of useful information and examples for those who wish to implement TA in their lives. I highly recommend this book to those who want to find out what is TA and what are the scripts we live. As E.Berne, Claude M.Steiner disagrees with the way psychiatry is treating people and teaches us how to treat our children and how to develop ourselves intellectually and emotionally.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good
This book is fantastic! It really explains why some people end up with personality disorders and how to go about having a person see their dysfunctional patterns. The book is well structured with good outlines of the various schemata. However, after about page 70, it gets a bit repetitive. The case illustrations are helpful, though I couldn't help noticing how neatly well packaged they were. Schema therapy definitely provides an excellent framework within which to conceptualize personality disorders.Apparently it is more helpful to borderline personality disorder than psychodynamic therapy. So,in summary, while I really appreciated how personality disorders were conceptualized, I found the book a bit repetitive... For a more 'academic' approach, you might want to try the Handbook of Personality Disorders.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Schema TherapyBible
This highly professional yet clearly articulated book covers the history, concepts, and techniques of Schema Therapy. While this therapeutic approach originated in cognitive therapy, it has evolved into a systematic ecclecticism that includes cognitive, behavioral, experiential, and other useful techniques for identifying and healing schemas, modes, coping patterns, etc.Highly recommended for the professional with an interest in helping clients alter personality disorders and other disturbances that are resistant to other therapeutic approaches.Fred P. Gallo, PhD, author of "Energy Psychology" and co-author of "The Neurophysics of Human Behavior"

5-0 out of 5 stars Thought provoking development in integrative therapy
As a psychodynamically trained therapist, I have sensed for many years that a 'pure' approach to therapy has severe limitations. This led me to get further training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and to use this with my clients - to some good effect. However, I felt uncomfortable using this 'either, or' approach to therapy (either psychodynamic OR CBT) and have been trying for a long time to work out a way of integrating these two approaches in my practice.

5-0 out of 5 stars The body does bear the burden
When a thoughtful individual takes the time to summarize 30 years of experience, I view this as a great gift. When his insights allow us to help in treatment, it is a blessing. His major thesis is that trauma, when it produces a chronic stress disorder, can manifest in peculair physical ways. This is the key insight and Dr. Scaer backs his observations with lots of clinical and research data. No doubt some will find this a rigorous read, but it is well worth the effort. I had the opportunity to try this theory. A teacher in a rough part of town ( I live in NYC) witnessed in his class a fight where a student viciously punched a girl in the head, when the teacher interevened, the next blow was to the back of his head sending him into the chalk board and breaking his glasses. He presented 5 days later with classic post concussion syndrome of impaired memory, inablility to read and other congnitve deficits. Before I read Dr. Scaer's book, I would have have not been able to treat him, for, from a medical point of view, it was all the brain banging aroung in his skull that caused this. However, Dr. Scaer made me think that this was instead a PTSD from having witnessed a vicious attack. I treated him with EFT and remarkably two days later he was normal! (This would have usually taken many weeks). We are all searching for ways to treat PTSD, but at least we can now view some mystifying symptoms in a model for which hopefully soon we will be able to fix. Kudos, Dr. Scaer.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Putting on the brakes"- making trauma therapy safer
This book is refreshing, well written and easy to read - it is full of sound common sense (something often lacking these days!) It stands on its own or can be read as a useful adjunct to Babette's earlier excellent book on the psychophysiology of trauma.Babette's wisdom, style and honesty around the many different approaches and tools for working with trauma are covered extensively and most usefully as fascinating case studies. I especially appreciated the chapter on learning from our mistakes and failures and the surprising fact that clients respect honest ignorance and they often don't get enough of it in the therapeutic encounter.Adaptability is the key word here..that is adapting to the unique needs of each client.Read more
