4-0 out of 5 stars Very useful and well written
Very useful and understandable, practical tool and method. It is welcomed as an assett to the counseling profession

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a case examples book, not a text.
I read the criticisms from other readers and felt that they didn't understand the intention of the book. They wanted an explanation of how to do EMDR, and this is a casebook of examples not a text.If you want to understand how to do EMDR, you have to read the textbook by Dr. Shapiro that explains the procedures and protocols. If you want to actually do EMDR, you have to take the class.I did last year, and because I haven't practiced I am taking it again. It's not something you want to try on your own.
5-0 out of 5 stars a therapy that gives hope
This is a well studied and important psychological modality which appears to be little known to the lay population. This book is clear and easily read. It will give hope to everyone who is at a juncture in their life. EMDR will certainly help with taking the next step towards self-actualization. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Read
If you want concise and comprehensive information concerning PTSD this is a must read.It is well written, clear, and provides a great review of the current literaure regarding treatments for PTSD.Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars A humane and rational book for clinicians
This is an excellent review of all the major modalities of treatment for PTSD, including some that have wide use with traditional or anecdotal support but little or no adequate scientific research, such as psychodynamic, hypnosis, and art therapies. New, relatively un-researched approaches such as EMDR are indeed included, as well as the 'gold standards' of CBT and medications.
4-0 out of 5 stars A good introduction
As the field of psychological trauma treatment matures, this book fills a need to provide a broad overview of where it is. It might be argued that the editors' investment in one of the therapies discussed in the book (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) colors their presentation and leads to the neglect of other therapies, both established (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing and promising (Cognitive Therapy), this is not a major flaw as the individual chapters are written by individuals with some knowledge of their subject areas. Nonetheless, given the ongoing research being conducted on treating PTSD, researchers should bear in mind that this book will likely need revisions within the next year or two to be truly accurate. ... Stories are very good specially if you have people & want to tell them something.
5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent collection of Ericksonian metaphors
Dr. Milton H. Erickson often worked his "magic" by telling metaphorical stories to his patients. The construction of such effective metaphors has sometimes been difficult for Ericksonian hypnotherapists.Burns addresses this issue by affording the reader a collection of 101 therapeutic metaphors. For each story, the problems addressed, resources developed, and outcomes offered are listed.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars powerful, beautiful, evoking
I began this book because I am a student of Annie's. I could not put it down, feeling like I myself was becoming somehow involved with her relationship with Ben (the 5 year old boy with brown hair and bangs). I felt like I was getting inside both Annie and Ben while watching the beautiful way in which they interacted. I could not be in the room with this book without wanting to read on into the relationship that evolves. The personal aspect of the patient-therapist relationship becomes the center focus as does Annie's life outside of these interactions with Ben. The reflection, time, energy, and exposure that is demonstrated by the author in this book was by far the best I have ever seen. This has become my favorite book, one that I will never live without, and also one that will remind me of what I want to do with my life and how to do it.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Prevalence of Dismal Psychotherapists
Harvard child psychologist and severe child abuse survivor Annie Rogers suffered psychiatric hospitalizations once or twice a year from puberty until her late twenties -- when, after a six year insidiously inept and crazymaking "therapy," an attempt to stab and shoot that therapist and one last hospitalization for another word salad psychosis (and no more insurance), her exceptional and no doubt desperate sister and friends found the gifted and pro bono analyst Dr. Blumenfeld. If this exceptional memoir hasn't become a classic must read in psychology with many reviews by both patients and therapists by now, there are unfortunate reasons. One is that Annie's politically correct adolescence shows in her disdain for the "medical models and diagnoses" Dr. Blumenfeld himself could afford to abandon only because he knew them and the blind therapists who live by them so well -- and thus could authentically reach and stabilize the talented and brilliant, borderline and psychotic personality and doctoral intern Annie. "You have a kind of giftedness, Annie, that probably has always been inseparable from your suffering, and we don't know very much about that yet." What we need now is a wonderful book from the exceptional and sainted Dr. Blumenfeld and more from the healed and gifted writer Dr. Rogers on the two sided magic of play therapy with children. You must meet Annie's beloved "oppositional" 5 year old patient Ben and ponder the 7 foot angel "Theosporus" who protected and accompanied Annie from age 6 to Dr. Blumenfeld's office at 27. A Shining Affliction raises more questions than it answers -- it might have been twice as long, and it's hard to tell if important details were deliberately or unconsciously left out. As it is, it's a daring memoir by a once psychotic Harvard child psychologist that should be a controversial must read classic in both child and adult psychotherapy.

5-0 out of 5 stars a strong memoir, about which I have a few criticisms
At its best it reminded me strongly of I Never Promised You A Rose Garden, in that it shows the healing relationship between an excellent therapist and a disturbed female patient. This book had the added benefit of having the patient/author also be a therapist, and while being healed herself doing a marvelous job of participating in the healing of a young boy whose problems are remarkably similar to her own.Read more

A brilliant description of human nature and how to better deal with the world around us. It opens a door to understanding ourselves; without which we cannot hope to understand our world. Highly recommend it. I ended up buying 4 copies for friends. 5 *s

5-0 out of 5 stars The point of unlimited possibility
This was the first book by Johnson I read, though my mentors and teachers spoke of him often. The information about the mandorla was particularly helpful, giving a visual and archetypical model for holding the energy of the apparently opposite forces in a space of new possibility.

4-0 out of 5 stars A little disappointing
Anyone reading the title of this book might justifiably assume it was going to deal with the type of energy manifested in Qi Gong, EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques), acupuncture, Quantum-Touch and many other energy therapies - subtle energy it is often called.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Mind-Boggling New Scientific Understanding
James Oschman has done it, he's presenting us with the rare gift of abreakthrough understanding of the human condition that includes a profound new theory of the mechanisms of life, one with critically important clinical implications. In prose that reads like a good adventure story he presents with great clarity, comprehensiveness, and extensive endnotes a mind-boggling story from the frontiers of biophysics. Reading merely the introduction to this immensely important book will open your mind to a radically different paradigm of human functioning, one that is laying the foundation for more fully understanding all kinds of phenomena of living processes thatheretofore have remained insoluble mysteries.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars How stingy...
Steven Hayes wrote here:
5-0 out of 5 stars Acceptance and Commitment Therapy:An Experiential Approach to Behaviour Change
A really good overview and also in depth approach to a new therapy that could well be the next CBT - easy to read and with some very clear examples and analogies. I recommend it to anyone that has found that CBT has some gaps in regards to recurrance and behaviour change.

5-0 out of 5 stars Challenging Current Thinking in Clinical Psychology
Hayes and colleagues have made an excellent contribution with their book Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) by drawing together many years of theoretical work and practice into a very readable work. The first half ofthe book outlines the theoretical foundations of ACT. Many recent books inclinical psychology claim to offer a new psychotherapeutic technique or anew approach within a particular conceptual framework. In contrast, Hayesand colleagues present a new and comprehensive conceptual foundation forpsychotherapy. They seek to challenge some of the cherished notions inmental health (e.g., that mental disorders always arise from abnormality)and critique some of the central ideas in many popular therapies (e.g., theidea in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy that mental health will be improved bychanging the content of one's thoughts). Their argument identifies languageand our use of it as both one of the key reasons for humanity's success andour inability to rid ourselves of many mental health issues. For areflective practitioner or academic, the arguments presented will give thereader much food for thought.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars I have no idea!
If you have no idea what NLP is, then forget about reading this book.I thought that NLP was confusing, this book just confused me even more. You must be in a special frame of mind to get this stuff. I read it, very slowly, and that proved to me that when you try to improve on something that a genius created (Bandler, NLP) then you must be more of a genius to understand it!
5-0 out of 5 stars Life changing stuff
The quality of your life is a reflection of the beliefs you have running around in your brain.
5-0 out of 5 stars Much better than normal NLP, this stuff is bloody terrific!!
i am surprised there aren't heaps of other reviews for this book as it truly is excellent.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great overview
Excellent overview of IPT from "the source", that is experts involved in its development and research. I decided to buy this book because I needed an introduction to IPT. It discusses in a clear manner the theoretical underpinnings of IPT, and the strategies and techniques used in IPT; the chapters are peppered with case histories and useful questions to ask and interventions to make with patients from an IPT perspective. I give it 4 stars rather than 5 because I think it may try to be all things to all people, blending too much of the elementary and esoteric.I think this book is meant for clinicians, and I don't think a lay person would be much drawn to it; as such I think some of the introductory information on depression (criteria for diagnosis etc.) is too elementary for your typical, even neophyte, clinician. The chapter on research data supporting IPT is rather esoteric; I liked this chapter, but this esoterica doesn't fit with the elementary aspect I just mentioned. This is a minor critique in what is otherwise a very good book for an introduction to IPT. I recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review-Comprehensive Guide to Interpersonal Psychotherapy
Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT) is an important intervention in mood and other related disorders. This volume represents the gold standard reference for any clinician seeking to learn or consolidate their practice of IPT. Updating the original 1984 text, this comprehensive reference clearly describes the theoretical basis of IPT as well as providing a good introduction to the actual practice of IPT in day to day clinical life. The real strength of the volume however, is its scholarly and comprhensive review of previous and ongoing research in IPT and its newer applications in other disorders. This volume is a wonderful inclusion on any library bookshelf as well as being an invaluable tool for the clinician seeking a comprehensive introduction to Interpersonal Psychotherapy ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent beginning counselor text
This text has great information and good self exploration exercises.Kottler has been writing these texts for many years, and has written a text that is accessible to the beginning counseling student.I cannot recommend using this text highly enough, my students love the book (as evidenced by my NOT seeing it on our bookstore shelves as a used text after the course wraps), and it is organized for both the student and the professor. The only alteration in chapter sequencing that I make is to teach the ethics chapter early in the course rather than late in the course.

5-0 out of 5 stars Do youself a favor and read this
By the end of this book, I wanted to meet Jeffrey Kottler, have coffee with him, exchange jokes, and ask him all the bigger questions that, as a graduate student, lurk in the back of my brain. You know. Those questions like, "Can I really do this?" and "What happens if I screw up someone's emotional well-being even worse than when they came in?" 5-0 out of 5 stars Should be required for those entering the field of therapy.
This book should be required reading for students who are consideringentering into the mental health field. It is thorough, helpful andstraightfoward. Personal anecdotes from practitioners offers a nice touch. ... Read more
