5-0 out of 5 stars The first effective unified protocol for anxiety disorders
Eifert and Forsyth come up with the first unified treatment for all anxiety disorders that actually works--an accomplishment that deserves a place in the history of psychotherapy. They do a superb job at making their protocol accessible to therapists that are new to acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), including students. In the first chapters of the book, the authors explain with both rigor and clarity what ACT is all about, and contrast it with CBT.In a nutshell, while CBT focuses on symptom management and reduction, ACT focuses on symptom acceptance and doing, in spite of all the inner stuff that may show up, for purposes of living a chosen, valued life.ACT claims convincingly that the road to a good life and mental health is not trying to feel good, but to become able to do what is required (i.e., act) to live a meaningful life, guided by a person's valued directions.ACT is a new, powerful therapy, already with remarkable empirical support, that combines the best of what the psychotherapy world has to offer, that is, acceptance- and mindfulness-based, as well as experiential and existential-humanistic therapies with behavioral interventions, in particular exposure.Maybe exposure work, perhaps the main contribution of the behavioral traidition to psychotherapy, best illustrates the contrats between ACT and CBT: while in CBT exposure is undertaken with the purpose of reducing symptomatology, in ACT it is undertaken with the purpose of increasing behavioral flexibility, i.e., expanding the behavioral repertoire of the person in the presence of anxiety provoking stimuli, and ultimately actualize willingness to move in the direction of the person's values.A truly extraordinary book, and a must read for any therapist who hopes to remain in the cutting edge of his profession. Finally, the editors at New Harbinger Publications deserve praise for the vision and creativity they have put into publishing ACT literature during the last few years. The book by Eifert and Forsyth is a remarkable outcome of such efforts.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and other "third-wave" behavioral approaches are changing the way many view psychopathology and processes of psychotherapeutic change.Eifert and Forsyth's ACT for Anxiety Disorders is an engaging and easy-to-comprehend book that should serve as a great introduction for those interested in learning more. With both integrative discussion of the theory behind this work and detailed clinical guidelines, it is an excellent resource for anyone wishing to incorporate mindfulness and acceptance-based approaches into his or her clinical work and/or research.Students consistently praise this book's readability and relevance; especially appreciated are the handouts that may be tailored to the specifics of a given client or target problem.

5-0 out of 5 stars A valuable book for any clinician's library
In the wake of the growing popularity of acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), a number of books have been written that detail the ACT philosophy and approach to therapy. However, none is better than the recently published Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for Anxiety Disorders by Georg H. Eifert and John P. Forsyth.Although the book is focused on treating anxiety disorders, the principles and techniques that are discussed are so far reaching that they are pertinent to the treatment of other types of psychopathology. Thus, this book is simply not just a `must read' for those who specialize in treating anxiety disorders but rather it is a book from which any psychotherapist at any level could benefit. What sets this book apart from others that describe the ACT and other like-minded approaches to therapy is that the authors have made the concepts easily digestible and the text effortless to read.At the same time, however, the authors have managed to keep the philosophy and approach undiluted. The techniques and "how-tos" are also presented in caring detail and integrated along with guidelines for case conceptualization.Another asset of the book is that the authors make every attempt to ground their approach in the state of the art psychological science. Not all "how-to" therapy books are as successful as this one in translating science into practice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Suits my personality to a tee
Diana Fosha has her own notion of healing with the power of full engagement, while the terapist "industry" has revelled in its aloofness and detatchment. To borrow a phrase 'You go girl'!

5-0 out of 5 stars Rich In Ideas, Passionate, and Clinically Innovative
Dr. Fosha has given us the gift of an important book, which combines easy access (fine writing), leading edge concepts in relational psychology and Intensive Psychotherapy, and the most helpful texts of clinical psychotherapy examples I have ever encountered. In fact, her running commentary (pithy and informal) on video transcripts from her own treatment is the perfect voice to accompany her chapter-long (and very helpful) illustrations of how the theoretical material on attachment and emotion-affect apply in real-life psychotherapy consultions and treatment. There are also some marvelous literary quotations sprinkled around, and solid recognition of the pathfinders ahead of her, from Darwin to Davenloo.

5-0 out of 5 stars An important contribution
In this most important work Dr Fosha describes in clear prose and with engaging case material an emerging trend in the practice of effective short term psychotherapy. Her understanding and honoring of the internal landscape of the patients subjective experience and affect regulation will be an inspiration to new clinicians and a source of wisdom to seasoned veterans. Theory is presented in a clear accessible manner free of fluff and is enhanced by her lyrical narrative style. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehending Reasearch Design 101
So you want to learn how to set up a psychological inquiry but you don't exactly know how to go about it? Well, this book is pretty good at helping you along. It takes the time to walk you through the "do" and the "don't" that comes with gathering useful data, and it actually keeps a pace that isn't too slow and it isn't to fast, and it doesn't make drastic leaps and expect you to keep up. It actually starts a ground level, showcasing what is good and what isn't when it comes to research topics, and sets in motion a process that walks you through the objects an experiment should set out to achieve. This expands as the book focuses, and walks you through Set-Up Chapters 1-5), Simple Experiments (Chapter 6, Multiple-Group Experiments (Chapter 7), Factorial Designs (Chapter 8), Within-Subjects Designs (Chapter 9), how to read and evaluate your data, and how to pull it all together and write your research proposal/ reports.

5-0 out of 5 stars Yalom speaks to and for all of us
This book is simply wonderful. The first chapter about Momma is worth the price of the book all by itself. Whether one is a therapist, is in therapy, is curious about therapy, or just wants to understand life, read this book, in fact, read all of Yalom's books, (well, maybe not "The Practice of Group Therapy") That one is a textbook for practicing group therapists.

2-0 out of 5 stars Greatly flawed but decent read.
The problem with this book is that it leads you to think this a work of complete nonfiction, each chapter being a seperate tale of psychotherapy with patients, and the first 4 chapters were great - but the last two, the last one especially, really annoyed me because I kept thinking 'how could this possibly happen? this is ridiculous. Has this author completely lost his mind?? and when I finished readingthe last chapter, I thought to myself, okay, this last chapter completely destroys all credibility this book ever had. Then I went to the copyright page, curious to see if it was listed as fiction or nonfiction, and what do i find? 'nonfiction except for chapters 5 and 6, which are works of fiction' well gee thanks for telling us ahead of time, would have made the reading a lot more enjoyable if i had known that!!5-0 out of 5 stars A great read!
Once again Yalom has written a book that holds our interest, and informs us at the same time. His intimate story about his mother must strike a cord in most of us who are told by society we should love our mother. (maybe she wasn't so loveable a lot of the time). The other stories are very entertaining, and informative; revealing what the psychiatrist is thinking about during and between sessions. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars It is what it says
I've studied hypnosis with Stepp, Bandler, and Dobson and read just about every book by Bateson, Haley, Watzlawick,Zeig, Hilgard,Rossi, and Weitzenhoffer as well as the collected works of Milton Erickson....I wish I had found this book early on. It's a great foundation book that everyone who studies and uses hypnosis as a tool should have in their library. Yapko is obviously influenced by the Erickson approach to hypnosis but this doesn't prevent him from providing the alternatives and how they might be appropriately used depending on how the client presents. If you are new to hypnosis YOU NEED TO BUY THIS BOOK.
5-0 out of 5 stars A sweeping, accessible overview of the hypnotic process.
Rick Voit, Ph.D. Co-author: Hypnosis in Clinical Practice: Steps for Mastering Hypnotherapy. (Routledge)
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro text for Hypnosis study
This book is a great text to use for learning about hypnosis or to teach hypnosis to students. It is thorough, covering every significant issue that a typical hypnosis practitioner would deal with, and it presents a careful, balanced examination of many issues that are often misrepresented by either proponents or critics of hypnosis and hypnotherapy. The current edition (3rd) seems very well organized and conceptualized, and is pretty well updated about neuroscience correlates of hypnotic states.Yapko clearly wishes to make hypnosis a well-respected healing practice, and attempts to present hypnosis in a well-developed context that allows readers to see the many potential benefits of using hypnotic techniques as well as the possible hazards of misrepresenting or misapplying hypnosis. This is a well-researched, comprehensive, and well-rounded presentation of hypnosis which should serve many hypnosis practitioners well.It is hard to find a book on hypnosis of this quality, with most books on the topic focusing more on techniques and exalting the power of hypnosis than on addressing the many professional issues and contexts that practitioners will have to work with. The only significant fault in this book I can point out is the title, as Yapko proceeds to explain why he is not happy with the word "trance" as a descriptor for states of consciousness appearing during hypnosis.Perhaps he will decide on a new title the next time this text is updated.Meanwhile, Trancework is a book that sets a high standard for Hypnosis texts. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Carl Rogers' classic
This is Carl Rogers' classic and a must-read for everyone interested in getting real with themselves. The critic who edited this version indicates very successfully that there are important parallels between Carl Rogers and Ralph Waldo Emerson. This makes Rogers' philosophy and psychotherapeutic approach a truly American one, one that places the individual in the supreme seat of ultimate authority over his/her own experience and existence. The main message that Rogers develops from many different angles is this one:there is no beast in man, and therefore there is also no need to fear one's innermost thoughts, feelings, longings and desires."There is only man in man." This was surely a revolutionary message at the time, andremains to be revolutionary to this day, as so many modern-day religionists cling to the idea of man's "innate badness."Rogers most certainly debunks that destructive religious heritage in his work. This book is a pleasure to read.It is written in very simple, yet precise language and goes down "like honey." ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Useful!
This book, which wisely includes a C.D. is great because you can give your client a piece of paper they can really use concerning the chosen treatment and hopeful outcome that was just covered in the session. It is concise and very well written.

5-0 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE MOST USEFUL AND USED BOOKS FOR CLIENT EDUCATION
In 30 years of psychotherapy practice,I have used handouts from this book more than any other source. Many clients likethese handouts because they are short and give an overview of the topic. They are not in depth guides, however. This is one of the few books worth several times its cost.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Helpful to My Clients
Cohen-Posey has packed this book and disc with a great deal of useful information which, although very helpful to a professional, is not at all helpful to my clients. I deal with college students who are reluctant to do yet more "homework". The handouts presented here are so full of information that one senses they might need a several hours just to comprehend the directions for the assignment. Additionally, the layout of the exercises is awful -- not enough white space and attractive lettering to invite someone to dig into the assignment. Sounds very shallow, yet layout design is very important to consider. All in all a good book for very motivated private practice clients ( a rarity!); not practical or useful for traditional-age college students. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic collection of therapeutic metaphors
Metaphors are powerful vehicles for change; the unconscious mind must associate with elements of the story to understand it.Milton H. Erickson, M.D., arguably the greatest hypnotherapist ever, often utilized metaphors to achieve breakthroughs with his patients. Now 100 Ericksonian metaphors are available for you to use with patients thanks to the Lanktons' Tales of Enchantment. Each metaphorical story in this treasure trove is preceded with information regarding what the story teaches, problems addressed, and the target audience.I highly recommend this collection of therapeutic metaphors for any Ericksonian hypnotherapist or individual who wishes to read stories that will effectuate positive changes in his or her life.

4-0 out of 5 stars A positive resource for profesionals and non-profesionals
This book is oriented principally to people thet work in the mental health area, giving very valuable resources for cariing out therapeutic conversations, and reading it adds a great deal to creativity. But on the other hand, it doesnt have a good review of how to construct metaphors, it presents many ready-made metaphors.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but tends to use sterotypes
This book is about helping you find out what emotional actionsyou commit or what emotional feelings you have and how to get over it before it destroys you. It covers a wide range of over forty habits and explains each of them in at least three pages. Being so short, it is able to keep your interest long enough to continue on without getting bored. It is just the right length per habit and gives great insight to why it happens and cuts to the bone how to stop it alone or with help. It cover a lot of habits that can hinder you. Here are a few.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Read and Tool
As a graduate student in a predominately psychodynamic program, I have been assigned a myriad of psychodynamic/analytic literature, and this book, by far, is the mostincisive, jargon free, and useful tool I have found for understanding dynamic theory-all its important nuances- and perhaps, even more importantly, for applying it to patients. Gabbard also elucidates many ancillary topics, such as fee setting and phone calls, which the reader quickly learns are not so ancillary, but an integral part of the therapeutic technique and process. It is also highly refreshing and empowering to know that this masterful and erudite work on PSYCHOTHERAPY, and its implied necessity, was done by a biologically trained PSYCHIATRIST. Wow, sheer joy!

5-0 out of 5 stars THE supervision text
It is easy to see why Fundamentals of Clinical Supervision is so frequently referred to as THE supervision text. Bernard and Goodyear successfully synthesize a vast (and growing) amount of multidisciplinary supervision literature into a single comprehensive source. The book is well written, and organized such that it makes for easy referencing. Each of the 12 chapters presents an in-depth examination of both seminal and contemporary writing related to clinical supervision. While the `Supervisor's toolbox' serves as a welcome resource for graduate students and new supervisors, the thorough presentation of the most up-to-date theoretical and empirical work informs seasoned supervisors and educators alike.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best you will ever read
This is an easy to read book, which managed to make profound points about life, pain, and fate.I enjoyed reading the first part of the book and learning about what it was like to be in such a hellish place (a concentration camp), and yet still being able to be positive about life. What more can I say than its an excellent book?

5-0 out of 5 stars I learned: All the Auschwitz survivors, including the author, had something significant yet to do with their lives!

5-0 out of 5 stars Pain and Hypnosis
Although there are many books on hypnosis and to a certain degree a rather long list of works on scripts for hypnotherapy, there are few good works on pain scripts. I was therefore surprised to discover Dr. Marlene E. Hunter, M.D. book entitled "Creative Scripts for Hypnotherapy."
5-0 out of 5 stars A rare jewel of a book for clinicians and other therapists
Using a wonderful array of metaphors the author outlines various strategies and mechanisms that physicians and other therapists might use to assist patients towards resolving or coping with a wide range of both physical and psychological suffering. The concept that all symptoms are psychosomatic was certainly an insight for me that has contributed enourmously to improving my own communication with patients both in and out of hypnosis. This highly practical guide effectively allows the therapist to adapt the scripts to an enourmous variety of situations.I have found the section on phobias and fears particularly helpful in treating the common needle phobia encountered in my own hospital practice. 5-0 out of 5 stars Clinical Writing At Its Best
For the practicing clinician, "Awakening The Dreamer: Clinical Journeys" is an exciting trip into the shared reality of the interpersonal field in which psychoanalytic treatment takes place, and into the critically important dissociated aspect of that field. The book is a totally engaging read, clinically alive and wonderfully erudite, drawing on the history of psychoanalysis, literature, poetry, and neuroscience. Both clinically and conceptually, it provides an indispensable frame of reference that will deepen even treatments that appear "routine," but Bromberg's perspective is most breathtakingly powerful in helping the analyst reach the many so-called difficult patients currently finding their way into our waiting rooms.
