5-0 out of 5 stars Don't debate whether you need it or not...just read it
If you're investigating this book, chances are you can benefit greatly from the information. What harm can come from you feeling less shame in your life?None.
5-0 out of 5 stars HEALING that keeps giving...
I bought my edition of Bradshaw's "Healing the Shame that Binds You" in 1988, one year after my experience with The Caron Foundation's ACOA treatment program.
5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Starting Point for Recovery
From my own family experiences, I became numb to the world. This made the process of finding a solution difficult because I couldn't even find a starting point for recovery. This book was a fantastic source of enlightenment because it names, very specifically, the varying facets of shame and causes of depression. It helped me really put a finger on what I was wrestling with, and give me a "to-do" list for therapy.I don't think this book on its own will help you actually recover, but it definitely will give you a specific plan of action and greater understanding of how unhealthy behaviors perpetuate through generations.I believe talk therapy is the way to successful recovery because they can recognize unhealthy behaviors that you don't notice.Thankfully, professional therapists truly are a "safe place" to reveal secrets that tied you down.I'd recommend this book to people who felt numb like I did (and do), and need a way to regain some clarity. When you have the courage to face your darkest fears, you will realize it was worth a hundred times the pain in order to feel genuinely happy again. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Medical Physics Bible!
I find this an absolutely fantastic book. It really is the bible of medical physics for radiotherapy. I had the second edition until it fell apart, and just purchased this new third edition. It explains virtually every single thing you need to know in therapy- from a theoretical point of view.
2-0 out of 5 stars Much better books available
When I started working in Radiation Therapy, somebody recommended this book to me to learn the theoretical aspects. I am also required to teach a resident lecture out of this book. The more I use it, the less I like it. While the book may contain information on all basic and necessary topics, the way they are presented is less than optimal.

5-0 out of 5 stars State of the art
Essential material and systematic paths of therapy by the experts' experts.5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent tool at last !!!
I am a second year MSW student who works in a mental health clinic.I have found this book to be extremely helpful and practical in the treatment of depressive and anxiety disorders. My supervisor even purchased a copy of this book after she saw my work.Clients respond well to the interventions suggested, and they feel like they are finally being understood. It also forces the worker to be thorough in their work.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Superb New Book for Practioners of Cognitive Therapy
A great many books have been written about cognitive therapy, but few areas useful to the cognitive practitioner as this book by Robert Leahy andStephen Holland. It is a book that is remarkable for its scholarship anddistilled years of clinical acumen, and clinicians, graduate students, andpsychiatrists in training will find it practical beyond measure.I am agreat admirer of Leahy and Holland's previous work, and this new effort hasexceeded my own heightened expectations for such a volume. The book is acompendium of information that is valuable beyond measure, and makes aprofound claim on the attention of all serious cognitive therapists, andthose who are in training to learn cognitive therapy. The book is alsolikely to attract a wide audience among teachers of cognitive therapycourses in graduate and medical schools, and internship and residencyprograms. Among the particular glories of this excellent book arethat the reader gets easy and immediate access to "state of theart" treatments for depression and anxiety disorders, detailedtreatment plans, a CD that allows printable forms for patients andtherapist, a detailed list of cognitive therapy interventions, andmedication charts. The book is a first rate summary of knowledge aboutdisorders and their treatments, synthesized into usable form by two mastercognitive therapists, and so it is likely to be of great value toclinicians, graduate students, and psychiatrists in training. Thus, thebook by Leahy and Holland is key reference work that serious cognitivepractitioners will want for their libraries, and that both experienced andnovice therapists can find helpful.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Complete Adult Psychotherapy Treatment Planner
This book is interesting, but it is far too "testbooky" and would benefit from being more focused on specific "how to" examples of treatment plans as do many other similar efforts. The text makes interesting reading, but, it didn't provide the concrete examples I expected.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another great tool for the practioner's tool box.
Research suggests that an ever increasing number of practioners are relying on tools such as this to help formulate treatment plans. 5-0 out of 5 stars Thank You.

5-0 out of 5 stars Trauma and the Body
This book is very informative and draws on the work of many of the most well-known and learned persons in this field. As a graduate student writing a dissertation on child abuse and its effects on adult survivors this book has proven to be a rich source of information, data, resources, and references.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential reading in trauma work
To me this is one of the pioneering books of body-centered psychotherapy.Well-written, insightful with meaningful case examples. It shines, it teaches, and it directs therapist in their work in profound life-changing ways.I work with traumatized children and integrate animal assisted therapy - and this book has been re-read multiple times and applied in my work.
5-0 out of 5 stars Must Read Material!!
I stumbled onto this book researching PTSD.My husband and I have been to a dozen doctors (literally) who clearly do not know the information in this book; information that I have watched manifest itself beneficially and adversely as explained herein.Modern psychology has gotten lazy in its treatments of the very treatable mental illnesses, and critically needed intervention is shunned as unsubstantiated because the truth behind knowledge, education and an educated support system threatens their "expertise."This book should 'light you on fire' to aggressively pursue intelligent, supportive, proactive physicians and, need be, therapists. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Both Structure of Magic Books are powerful but: masterpieces, but...
Structure 1 is well written, clear and concise, but Structure 2 is subtle and intense like a slow moving train that gets fast and fun at the pace you like. Both are informative books, don't get me wrong. But Structure 2 shows that communication and movement within communication is thwe basis of life. Whether its commuincating to your muscles to walk or do whatever, talk to another person, whatever requires communication at any level. In fact these books, I'll say are the spirit-voice of what it takes to live efffectively or the beginnings thereof of understanding that. Structure 1 tells you the map is not the territory, structure 2 tells you how to use the territory with the directions if you have the basic understanding given in 1 of what maps and territories are really for. The questions are asked in 1, the queastions are answered in 2. Anyhow, as Arthur C. Clarke said, technology only seems magical, when you haven't developed up to its level yet. That's what it all comes down to, development and The Structure of Magic Books show that. Step by step, understanding by understanding until you can put it together yourself in its proper order within the territory, and not just on a "silly" map. That's my story and I'm stickin' to it. more than that, that's my understanding and I'm growing past it to understand and undertake ever more and ever better. Hats off to Bandler and Grinder and all of their associates, I'm not saying they're the end or the beginnings, but they are an important part of that grand puzzle being solved called "existence and life". But eah person must put it all together for themselves, that's what The Map is Not The Territory means, I know. All right, happy reading if you buy em'!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
Great book, easy relatable read. Simple and to the point. Hit alot of core issues for me and was very easy to apply the lessons.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Guide and Aid. Very influential
This book and esp. the audio tape I have found to be very compelling. My heart felt much lightened by listening to Brach on more than several occasions. If eventually you wear out on listening to it, it's a great gift to pass along.

5-0 out of 5 stars Provides detailed guidelines
I have read quite a number of Buddhist books. But this is the first one I've read that actually shows how to apply Buddhist philosophy to my own life.Brach does a great job of explaining some of the central Buddhist precepts and then takes things a step further by explaining how these can work in every day life and giving very detailed, practical suggestions and meditation tips showing just how to incorporate these principles.I've grown so much from reading her book and feel I have a much deeper understanding of the ways Buddhism can provide healing and change one's perspective.I can't wait for her next book! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Illuminating
With an emphasis on words and the associations we make with them, Rogers unveils how some children continue to re-experience and re-live past trauma.First, she describes her own childhood crises in a narrative that is both revealing and intimate. She describes her state in ways that allow one to experience it as she had, instead of something simply as foreign and "over with."Then, through example, we follow her as she tries to understand what the children's gestures and words are trying to "say" without their being able to verbalize it.However, she uses the children's own meanings of things (instead of simply standard symbolic meanings) to re-explain to them what has happened and how it continues to persist in their lives, unwittingly. This is what keeps it fresh and real. Moreover, throughout the book, there is an unstated underlying stream of empathy and relatedness. A great book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A recipe for living powerfully
this book is a tremendous resource for coaches, consultants and other people professionals. And it can be assigned to the clients they work with. HMMM 52 lessons, 52 weeks in a year...Sounds like a weekly program that can keep clients humming.
2-0 out of 5 stars Content did not live up to its introduction
Unfortunately I purchased 7 copies of this book for a coaching program I was doing before I had read it.The cover information and introduction were intriguing. However, I found the content thin and failing to deliver on the promises laid out in the introduction of the book as well as the introduction of each chapter.I liked ideas that they told me they would tell me about; the authors delivered thin regurgitated material.

3-0 out of 5 stars Easy-to-read textbook detailnig the counseling process
Hackney & Cormier offer a simple stage presentation of counseling that explains the process to readers in a revealing way. Each stage is detailed, and various intervention genres are explored. At times, howeverthe book does not flow well. The authors do not take enough time to showhow each aspect of counseling ties together.Hackney & Cormier, however, are sensitive -- almost to a fault -- to multicultural issues.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great at process; tainted at points by political correctness
I've used this as a text for two years to teach the process of counseling at the undergraduate level. It's quite good at setting forth an understandable five-step process of counseling. The taint of politicalcorrectness rears its ugly head at points when the authors tacitly presumethe morality of homosexual unions--but these can instances can be bracketedoff. Most in need of rework is chapter nine on behavioral interventions;undergraduates find it difficult to digest this as written. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A broad, contemporary approach
This book is easy to read, providing a broad overview of contemporary behaviour therapy issues.Having read it cover to cover, I would recommend this book be read in conjunction with further, more detailed texts to flush out the finer details as the authors cover a number of therapy and models generally without going into much depth. However as a general introductory text, the authors have in my opinion delivered a useful package with elements of behaviour therapy successfully complimented by real-life examples of case studies and useful end-of-chapter summaries. The textbook comes with an additional student resource materials/participation worksheet booklet which unfortunately I did not find useful.A good book for the undergraduate level.

4-0 out of 5 stars A thorough journey through the buffet of modern practice
I just got through using this text along with Beck's "Cognitive Therapy - basics and beyond."This is an informative text and gives a very broad overview of the various techniques that come under the title "Cognitive - Behavioral Therapy."If you are looking for a broad view - this would be the text, if you are looking for specific advice to apply to practice, choose another book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Theoretical Understanding
This book is a great resource for developing a theoretical understanding of narrative therapy. Specific techniques such as letter writing and certificates are described in detail. However, if you are looking for a how-to guide on narrative therapy, I would suggest "Playful approaches to serious problems: Narrative therapy with children and their families" by Freeman, J.,Epston, D., & Lobvits, D. (1997).

5-0 out of 5 stars A left hand turn in therapy (for the better).
I was surprised to read the other negative reviews of this book. This book is, after all, the text which defined the philisophical underpinning of a new way of looking at expertise in therapy.Yes, much of the book, especially the discussion of Foucault's ideas, is hard going and at times requires a second or even third read. This is not a "how to" book.It is an invitation to a way of thinking about problems and their role in a life.It is a book about the transformative value of conversations, viewpoints and relationship. This book is not for sissies, but it is brilliant. Those who want a "narrative primer" should be able to find one elsewhere. However, they will be skipping the magic of transformative thought.Michael White and David Epston have unleased the power of alternatives for those oppressed by problems and by society. An amazing read!

1-0 out of 5 stars A disappointment
I'm a professional psychotherapist. I got interested in this book after reading a recent article about how survivors of rape, torture and other violence in Sudan were being helped with brief narrative therapy. Learning about a fresh approach to a seemingly impossible therapeutic task inspired me. I decided to learn more about it. I'm afraid I didn't learn much from this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Some of this stuff just seems so obvious
I am a school social worker. I don't use this book very often at all. Maybe that is b/c I don't really "write school treatment plans" for my job. Does anyone? I don't know---it just doesn't seem like most public schools, at least--have specific treatment plans.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for any one interested in psychology!!!
This book gives an honest opinion on the struggles and the victories in being a psychotherapist. I especially recommend it for those going into the field. It is reassuring to know that even the greatest of psychotherapist (Yalom) has difficulties he has to over come too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Therapy is about relationships
Many of the reviewers have already discussed the details of the stories so I am going to keep my comments on Dr.Yalom's therapeutic approach. Being a psychiatrist myself, and having the luxury of receiving and giving therapy, I will say that Dr.Yalom's brutal honesty, his grasp of transference and countertransference, his humbleness in acknowledging his own blunders is simply breathtaking. He is a breath of fresh air as most psychotherapist, and analysts in particular have truly a hard time acknowledging their mistakes. You hear about their patients' transference but never about their own countertransference. Dr.Yalom bares it all. Reading him made me feel like I am back in supervision with an excellent teacher who truly knows what therapeutic relationship is. Most of us believe that it is our interpretation of patients fantasies and dreams that bring about change. The reality is most changes come about by the patients' own hard work and we only provide the safe environment for that to occur. Dr.Yalom humbly acknowledges that time and time again. His departure from fixed rigid rules, sometimes holding someone's hand, hugging someone, extending therapy session, reducing fee or not charging fee are all great examples of a therapist who is truly engaged with that particular patient and for every patient he creates a new therapeutic relationship. There is no cookie-cutter models, or algorithms for therapy.
5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant!
This is a must for anyone interested in Psychotherapy.Beautifully written, the tales are incredibly honest accounts of cases Yalom has dealt with.I have recommended the book to many of my friends and colleagues.A must! ... Read more

A great book for therapists. The origins of the PNL. For those who are not professional therapists could be a little bit too dense.

2-0 out of 5 stars intense skepticism required
I took a psych course from Bandler when he was a grad student at CMU in 68. He was quite shallow then believing in overly simplisticmodels of human behavior. I've read a number of his books and while they promise qite a bit they don't work all that well. Recall the old saying, "seek simplicity and distrust it". Be careful, this is likely to be just another dead end on your road to enlightenment ... Read more

As a grief therapist I am always searching for books that will be helpful in my classes. This book was one I did indeed find valuable. I also use Write from Your Heart, A Healing Grief Journal in my group classes and for the children I use After the Tears, A Gentle Guide to Help Children Understand Death.

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful and instructive

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource book
Worden has written an inclusive, quality handbook, which is an excellent resource for those investigating the nature of grief. The book is useful to the practioner as well as the individual searching for information on grief and it's manifestations. It is a practical handbook in that it provides the reader with information they can use at the time it is needed, to help get through the crisis at hand. Wordens book is complete, without being wordly, is easily used with well defined categories. The handbook covers many different types of grief ranging from normal to complicated grief reactions, grief in children, to the counselors own grief. Practical applications to dealing with these issues in grief, are also provided. The book gives enough background to understand the topic at hand, saving the reader from 'wading' through pages of literature reviews. For those who desire a more extensive discussion, an ample and lenghty bibliography is offered ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical and Accesible Primer on Contemporary REBT
Three Minute Therapy pulls off a double feat: it provides one of the best available illustrations of the principles of contemporary Rational-Emotive Behavioral Therapy, and most importantly, it provides its readers with simple and straightforward techniques that can be employed immediately to address a broad range of emotional and practical problems.Illustrated with real-life examples and case studies from Dr. Edelstein's private practice of more than 25 years, TMT is highly readable and practical.
5-0 out of 5 stars Strongly Recommended
As an author in the field of economics (a behavioral science), a lifelong student of human behavior, and after observing many friends and relatives go through months and years of psychotherapy without alleviating their psychological problems, I long ago concluded that traditional psychotherapy was an ineffective pseudoscience.
