5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent overview
This book is an excellent overview of the the various phases of counselling and therapy. The authors bring the theoretical material to life by describing clinical examples. In this manner, learning is enjoyable and happens almost effortlessly.Particularly well written is the material pertaining to the initial part of psychotherapy.Another great aspect of this book is that it is written in a very straightforward manner that is not heavy on jargon. Thus, the book is suitable for multiple populations.Students in psychology will find information that will help them develop their therapeutic style.Practicing psychotherapists will find information to help them refine their approach to clients.People that are not psychotherapists will gain greater understanding of therapeutic interventions and, in turn, be able to make more educated choices for their own psychotherapy.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Book for ALL People, not only Vets
Ed Tick's book is not for Vets alone...this powerful book is a must read for ALL of us. Even those of us who have not felt the direct impacts of war (especially in the U.S.) are affected by it; war is an archetypal energy that exists in history, in the now, and more personally, in us all. With Afghanistan, Iraq, and now Israel close on their heels, war is a painful reality we cannot ignore. And, this moment in our history is a golden opportunity to delve deep into the shadowy subject of war and its very real effects on a global and personal scale. That said, Ed's book brought this war/warrior energy home for me, both dark and light. He masterfully retells the stories of people you and I would know, in addition to painting a picture of the roots of war/warrior and opening a path of healing for Vets and non-Vets alike...for all human beings. After reading War and the Soul, I will always look at war differently, feel compassion for soldiers/warriors, and personally be more aware of the little and not so visible wars that we as human beings wage in ourselves and in our everyday lives. I also am more aware of the warrior in me. Awareness is power, and in this case, the power to fight as a warrior would for peace and healing. Thank you, Ed. This book touched my heart and brought tears that needed to be shed.

3-0 out of 5 stars Intense
I have not finished reading this book as it is very graphic and emotional. I might be worth 5 stars when I finish but I have to get away from it for a while and only read it in pieces.

5-0 out of 5 stars Growing Our Soul
Dr. Edward Tick's new book War and the Soul will have a tremendous impact on the treatment of PSTD. Before his ground breaking book, the treatment for PTSD was learning to cope with the symptoms and medication. For Tick healing involves growing the soul big enough to carry the traumatic wounds. He also brings PTSD beyond the individual to a national disorder. "We speak of the soul of a nation. Is PTSD our country's soul sickness?"

5-0 out of 5 stars A great companion
This book is a great companion to my psychotherapy treatment planner.Although I have worked in social service for many years I was new to clinical work with children and adolescents. The activities in this book helped the children that I work with open right up about their therapeutic issues, and gave great ideas of how to address them in a non-threatening way.

5-0 out of 5 stars Completely satisfied!!!
Excellent book! I am a doctoral student in Clinical Psychology just starting to work with children. This book is full of good ideas.

2-0 out of 5 stars Creative Therapy with Children & Adolescents
I have used this book for over two years now.The book comes with many great ideas for therapeutic interventions. However, many of the exercises suggest that you refer to certain stories or activity sheets that are not in this book. (You must purchase an additional book to use with this one.) I would have preferred if this book had clearly stated on the cover that it needs to be in conjunction with another one. I still have not found the other book that this one refers to! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, with one major concern
Treating Sexual Disorders is an excellent, multi-authored work.It describes sex and couples therapy in a comprehensive manner that will be especially useful to the beginning sex therapist.I have one major concern, however, and that is the last chapter (treating paraphilia). The psychodynamic orientation of the author makes him regard paraphilia as inherently pathological, and not just as a result of learning history that gives us all different "turn ons."Charlton speaks, for example, on page 309 of how "working closely with the paphiliacs involves a confrontation with the nature of evil" and later mentions the "evil inherent in perverse sexuality."To be fair, perhaps he was only referring to victimizing or to the DSM IV caveat that the behavior has to cause upset to the person engaging in it or to a victim. The tone of the entire chapter, however, seems to pathologize paraphilia more than the literature supports. In my own practice (I am a licensed psychologist), I see many clients who have been told that any form of unusual sexuality makes them evil or dirty. They don't need any more help to feel that way.More could have been written regarding mutually consensual play between couples that is just a little (or a lot) "kinky" without the heavy judgement. This chapter aside, there is a great deal of value in this volume.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This awesome piece of writing is one of the most detailed theses on the treatment of sexual disorders that i have ever read. Starting with minor disorders and working its way up to the real serious ones, he book has plenty of detail that you'll not miss at all. Great book, but found out that "Natural Penis Enlargement: New methods of avoiding and curing impotence, premature ejaculation, and erectile dysfunction safely and inexpensively. NEW Secrets that your doctor won't tell you, No Pumps, No Pills and No Gadgets!" by Platinum Millennium is much better and more interesting to read

5-0 out of 5 stars Educational, useful and well written
As a therapist who sees patients with sexual problems I found this book extremely helpful. The various chapters gave me the tools I needed to understand sexual difficulties from a psychological and physical perspective.I've even referred my patients to selected chapters of the book, and they have reported that they were able to understand the concepts without having a professional education.I would recommend this book to seasoned and novice therapists to add to their library. It addresses areas that therapists tend to avoid. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, a Bible for Evidenced Based Therapy
Nathan and Gorman have provided mental health practitioners with an essential reference. No practitioner of psychotherapy or psychiatric chemotherapy can afford not to buy this book (purchase price notwithstanding). This compendium reviews treatments for major psychological disorders and offers effect size estimates for the benefits of treatment (i.e., how much better off are people after treatment than if they got no treatment at all).In addition, the authors summarize the quality of the research on which their reviews are based. They not only examine psychologically based treatments, but also medication treatments for some disorders. All practitioners and consumers should read this.As a faculty member in a clinical psychology graduate training program, I recommended this book to my students as optional reading - and almost all of them bought it because they found it invaluable.I hope this authors will choose to update this book every ten years ago (it is very recent, so it needs no updating now).If they do, I have no doubt that Nathan and Gorman will come to be inextricably associated with this monumentally practical work, the way that Gray is associated with Anatomy.Kudos to the authors for giving us this essential reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars A refreshing perspective on the psychotherapy process.
Dr. Levenson has managed to write an informative, helpful and entertaining book on psychotherapy. She has taken a bit of a literary risk by structuring the book around the dialogs of a student supervision group as they struggle to make sense of videotaped psychotherapy sessions, butDr. Levenson manages to pull this off.In fact, this literary device gives the book a liveliness and freshness rarely found in clinical writings. As a psychotherapist and clinical supervisor myself, I have found her concepts of immediate use in my daily work.Anyone who has worked in the field should particularly enjoy Dr. Levenson's liberating view of counter-transference as an inevitable reaction to a client's maladaptive interpersonal style - and not necessarily a signal for the therapist to run back for another decade of personal analysis.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully readable,thoughtful,humane,down-to-earth
Dr. Levenson's masterful didactic style reveals the elegance and simplicity of the time-limited dynamic model. The book provides moment-to-moment details of patient-therapist interactions and gives the reader a learning experience of remarkable immediacy.Dr. Levenson's clinical savvy and sophistication are evident on every page.Highly recommended for any clinician, regardless of orientation;you will find this highly readable, jargon-free presentation of time-limited dynamic psychotherapy an invaluable resource. A "must read" for clinicians who want to make every session count without sacrificing depth ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An inovative appraoach to therapy and life coaching.
I cannot recommend this book with more enthusiasm. Michael Frisch's innovative and practical handbook, Quality of Life Therapy (QOLT), is replete with exercises and detailed resources that should be on the shelf of any psychologist or life coach. He manages to marry the academic rigor of psychological study with the goal-orientation of executive and wellness coaching. QOLT ascribes to the idea that the sum total of all areas of life create one's collective "happiness" quotient. From traditional disputing exercises to budget management worksheets to deep breathing interventions, Quality of Life Therapy aspires to tackle all dimensions of one's life: the environmental, the relational, the emotional, the physical, and the cognitive. The sheer variety and span of the exercises provided by the enclosed "Toolbox CD" demonstrate why QOLT has so much to offer more conventional approaches to psychotherapy.Michael Frisch puts the most recent and avant-garde psychological research to practical use and generously shares it, worksheet by worksheet, with his readers.Buy this book!!! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars My 100-word book review
The Carl Rogers Reader is an excellent, thought-provoking collection of articles by Carl Rogers from different stages in his career and covering many subjects linked to the person-centred approach to psychotherapy. I found this book fascinating, enlightening and occasionally surprising; for example, when I realised just how much he was against accreditation for therapists. At all times, the life-affirming nature of the man shines through. If you are preparing to be a therapist and are drawn to the person-centred way, or are simply interested in the life and work of Carl Rogers, you will find this book a treasure trove.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
always a pleasure to read rogers. this book is a compilation of many wonderful pieces. rogers had a great ability to see beyond the surface and connect with people in a very real, personal, and therapeutic way. in an at times parental sort of way, rogers was able to see through to the heart of a patient and his issues and bring insight and hope. great read for those new to psychological theory/practice AND those who have been doing it for awhile.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential reading for any psychotherapist
I have been working as a therapist for over 10 years and, to my shame, have only now started to read any of Rogers' work. This selection of his writings strikes me as amazingly modern and relevant to the work of anyone in the 'helping' professions.I have been struck by the almost spiritual quality of his thoughts, and the way in which he cuts through any psychological or psychotherapeutic dogma.I have been truly inspired by this book and I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in human relationships; I believe that anyone would come away with new and profound insights that would challenge, stimulate and reassure. An excellent book! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The most helpful child therapy book in my library
It's been 4 yrs since I read this book, and I still recommend it often to young therapists as well as to the most seasoned. One of the most skilled child clinicians I know told me that reading this book has changed the way she practices child therapy.Everyone who has read it (that I know of) has liked it and purchased their own copy after starting to read mine.It is written in a very readable fashion, which will be a delight to those who have trudged through dense clinical texts.Prior to reading this book, I used conventional board games merely as filler, and usually felt guilty about doing so.Shortly after I read this, I was able to put them to good clinical use. Highly recommended. ... Read more
