1-0 out of 5 stars Most frustrating book ever!
I teach at addiction studies at a local university, and found this book to be redundant and frustrating. It repeats itself, as would a student who has a single thought and lots of space to fill. I find this to be the most poorly organized book I have ever taught from, and will not use it again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review
An excellent resource guide into motivational interviewing. A must for any therapist of addiction. It should be the number 1 tool for any educators in handling difficult situations with students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Kudos for Miller and Rollnick
As a longtime clinician and trainer of clinicians, I found Miller and Rollnick's "Motivational Interviewing" (2d edition) extremely sound, helpful and thoughtful.A great book for clinicians to read who are tempted to push one side of a patient's ambivalence ("But can't you see you have to leave him -- he's no good for you!")and not to respect the other side of it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Reasoned voice of years of practical experience
Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy: A Practitioner's Guide by Nancy McWilliams (Psychoanalytic Theory and Therapy instructor, Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology, Rugers--The State University of New Jersey) is a guide written especially for psychotherapists, but which contains vital information that practitioners and recipients alike should internalize to promote optimum treatment results. From preparations the therapist should undergo, including submitting to professional psychotherapy oneself, to occupational hazards of the practice, to a careful discussion of basic therapy processes of listening and talking, to advanced, complex issues of analysis and understanding, and so much more, Psycho-analytic Psychotherapy covers all the basic groundwork with the calm, reasoned voice of years of practical experience. Recommended for those considering psychotherapy as a career as well as those involved in practice looking to broaden their awareness of available methods.

4-0 out of 5 stars Complicated and Deep
This is a good exposition of mindfulness theory and practice. Althought a novice therapist will find the text useful, most of the insight gained by reading this text will be achieved by therapists with 5 to 10 years actual practice under their belts. I would advise novice therapists to buy this book immediately and then delve into each chapter several times per month for the next few years. They will never regret it. The problem and promise on this book is that it requires you to go back and review each concept of your original training, whether it is Adlerian, Freudian, Cognitive or Christian. Mindfulness is the goldplating overlay that makes your therapy more valuable.

5-0 out of 5 stars a wise, invaluable resource
This well-written, wise, accessible book will help novice and seasoned therapists incorporate mindfulness practice into their clinical work, skillfully and thoughtfully. The editors and contributors provide a range of expert perspectives on the role of mindfulness in psychotherapy and convey the complexity of good psychotherapy, mindfulness practice, and the union of the two. The clarity with which they accomplish this is remarkable. The depth of their personal and professional expertise and experience is evident throughout. Inclusion of a thorough review of current research in the area is another notable strength of the volume.I highly recommend this book to clinicians and researchers interested in the powerful role that mindfulness may play in psychological healing. It is essential reading for anyone interested in this highly promising area of study.
5-0 out of 5 stars A special collection about nothing special
As a psychotherapist for 30 years and a mindfulness practitioner for nearly 10 years, I have read a lot of good books and articles on both subjects."Mindfulness and Psychotherapy" is as clear and helpful in both disiplines as any I have encounted. The editors have done a 'mindful' job in selecting from an array of perspectives.Mindfulness is defined and contextualized for our western psychotherapeutic practice, while also placed in an historical and cultural framwork that informs and enlightens our understanding. Indeed the more philosophical essays are perhaps the strongest pieces in this marvelous compendium. We are reminded that the Buddah saw himself as a physician who sought to diagnose and find a cure for human suffering.Out of his own intimate encounter with suffering, he devised and revised a program that we in western psychological science are just now testing and finding curative-both for our clients and for ourselves.

1-0 out of 5 stars The Neuroscience of Psychotherapy
I have not received this book. Please advise when it will arrive.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Review and Exploration
Cozolino's text presents a very complicated topic in an extremely accessible manner, owing to a straightforward writing style and a penchant for perfectly applicable example case studies. He breaks down the functioning of the brain into "digestible" chunks and builds throughout the text on earlier learning. If you work in the field of counseling or psychotherapy, you simply cannot go wrong by reading this book and supplementing your knowledge of neuroscience-psychotherapy connection.

5-0 out of 5 stars An outstanding piece of synthesis.Buy it.
This book is simply a masterpiece in presenting neuroscience relevant to the both researchers in braod areas of psychological science and therapists. The presentation of brain specific information is assured, clear and reasonably well referenced. The book always connects brain regions with manifested behaviours and psychological symptoms. There is so much clarity in the text that it really deserves a very wide audience way beyond what its title suggests. The book embraces aspects of affective and evolutionary neuroscience, ties them to human consciousness development and identifies specific brain developments that cause us to be who we are.The piece of the development of the parietal lobes is one of the best I have ever read. The author has a gift for communication, and this is so rare in neuroscience books that the stands proud of the rest. The tripartite brian, psychology and psycotherapeutic connections are presented with out propagandising one at the expense of the other. There is a degree of good quality speculation in the book from time to time which could set its own research agenda.I will conclude by saying that do give a longer review would runs the risk of spoiling the lively and surprising erudition of the author.Definitely a book worth reading, worth keeping and certainly if you loan it out, you may have trouble getting it back. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Promising intervention but reservations from an EMDR client
EMDR may be an excellent form of overcoming trauma, and the research tends to suggest it does, although if you read the literature in a disinterested way, you will find there are many mixed reports on study results. Some find EMDR equal to or better than Cog/Beh Therapy intervention; some find it better; some find it not as effective. As someone who has conducted experimental research AND has undergone EMDR for trauma, I wish to point out several issues that should be addressed, even for true believers.First, EMDR is a perfect intervention for a technological age: after all, don't all our life's problems supposedly have a technological solution. Our culture says so, but of course, history tells us otherwise.Spiritual meaning, social integration, a personal credo, culture and religion still appear to be the ingredients that hold us together..or as Paul Tillich says, "Our ground of being."Technology may be helpful but it is ultimately ancillary.Of course, those who suffer from trauma may require immediate relief, and if EMDR can reduce suffering efficiently and quickly, that's fine.I had about 10 EMDR sessions and they helped me immensely.HOWEVER, that being said, one must look a bit further.First, one must consider the individual client him/herself.EMDR helps us return to a traumatic event, see it more objectively, and hopefully allows us to use our reasoning faculties which may not have been in play during such events owing to stress, shock, immaturity, ignorance, and so forth. However, I believe we all have varied levels of experiencing or "reliving" memory. Some can visualize quite easily and can "see" the experience as vividly, even more vividly than the true life one. In keeping with Gardner's idea of "multiple intelligences," we should consider that different individuals have different "intelligences" in reconstructing or reliving events. Furthermore, we should consider that individuals have varying degrees in their ability to make associations. While a trauma may be a single event or several similar events, in all likelihood they have developed as narrative themes that compose the self-concept the client has.The better a client can connect the trauma to such themes, the more holistic the effect. A good EMDR clinician can encourage this reconstruction, but one should be aware that we have different cognitive styles.
5-0 out of 5 stars Recommend!
Easy to read and helpful for understanding the process of EMDR.I would have to agree with the previous reviewer Laura M that PEACEFUL HEART : A Woman's Journey to Healing is a must-read.Aimee Jo Martin's story clearly illustrates and details her journey with successful EMDR treatments.Quite powerful if you want to really see how effective EMDR can be.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro to Neurofeedback
This is the latest book on neurofeedback and reports the state of the art as of 2005. The author takes the basic protocols used by the majority of the field and then integrates qEEG, one of the fastest growing approaches to neurofeedback. Another reviewer calls qEEG "outdated."This is an outrageous, misleading statement, at best. qEEG IS controversial and not all practitioners use it. My own opinion on qEEG is that it is very often useful and sometimes essential, partifcularly for traumatic brain injury, as the book states, but not always necessary. I also believe that non-qEEG approaches can be very effective. But suggesting that qEEG outdated is, just plain wrong.
4-0 out of 5 stars OK from an historical point of view
The book is well done, clear and a comprehensive introduction to neurofeedback. I enjoyed reading (studying) it. I must say I mostly appreciated it from an historical point of view though. It describes the old way of doing neurofeedback -- still much in use -- and for instance doesn't mention that qEEG as a basis for neurofeedback has been outdated for several years now. Unfortunately there are no books detailing the more recent neurofeedback tools...

4-0 out of 5 stars Good intro book
Excellent overview of a field that is growing. I started out in biofeedback but had been out of it for 20 years. Went to a workshop reviewing the latest in QEEG and neurofeedback, so I wanted to learn more. This book has given me a good sense of what I will need to do to get back into this area of treatment and analysis. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Thorough Explanation and Illustration.
Where I work, we are close to the point in which we will be implementing the Response to Intervention model for determining learning disabled and emotionally disturbed student eligibility. This necessitated my pouring over this book a few times in the last few weeks. I have to recommend it strongly as it would be difficult to imagine a more thorough work concerning this very new subject. Its historical discussion of special education and learning disabilities was excellent as was the authors' review of recent laws and legislation. The authors' description of the ineptitude of the discrepancy model is compelling even for those of us who never endured zoo staffings which were often its inevitable result. For those of us in the field, there are endless forms and figures on these pages which can be used as inspiration behind the forms accompanying our district's transition; although, RTI adoption clearly isn't just a matter of forms. The most exciting aspect is that it will give us an opportunity to develop a new aspect to one's game. Now, we'll utilize scientifically based interventions and be able to initiate them while recording the results. The authors even offer a template for a novel psychological report based upon Response to Intervention. Their creativity and thoroughness was a pleasant surprise.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to the many psychotherapies
This book provides excellent introductions to a variety of psychotherapies, indeed the most popular methods today. There are over 400 different therapies, and as such this book can not cover them all. However, the book does provide adequate detail for an indepth overview of the therapies, and comes highly recommended to beginning students and graduate students alike.

1-0 out of 5 stars CBT rips off the Buddha
CBT theorists tend to present in a lucid fashion ideas that have been therapeutically effective for centuries, or in the case of Mindfulness, millennia.Unfortunately, the authors of this book, in fine CBT tradition, manage yet again to misappropriate the work of others and call it 'a new approach'.There is nothing new in what CBT does, other than to re-label as 'evidence-based' the ideas of other innovators after some dubious random-control trials. If the reader wishes to avoid supporting the political recycling of every other therapy ever created, he/ she would better serve patients, clients and self by reading original texts from, for example, Buddhism, which are more authentically authored than CBT's eclectic bag of techniques. However, as with any heavily funded political movement, I suspect that the CBT movement will continue selling old rope as new as long as we want knowledge served up as fast food. It's enough to make any self-respecting therapist relapse into depression!

5-0 out of 5 stars Depression researcher
A fantastic book explaining the basics behind previous research and how we've come to arrive at the new mindfulness-based concept.Highly recommended for new clinicians wanting to further expand their understanding to a brief background of the cognitive aspect of relapse of depression as well as the direction future research appears to be heading.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Power of Precison and the creation of genius
Although the Patterns books are old books, they explain everything in an understandable and exact way and I do mean exhaustively understandable and exact which is why I like them so much. I bought Patterns 1 in paperback and Patterns 2 in hardcover. But anyhow, showing the exactitudes and subtleties of the use of language in deep-trance hypnosis is genuinely fascinating no matter how long-winded the descriptions and stuff get. Who knows? The way he used language may have been the real beginning of "the subliminal movement". Well very interesting reading nevertheless.
5-0 out of 5 stars BANDLER AND GRINDER, NOT JUST AUTHORS
Richard Bandler and John Grinder did not just read and study Milton's method of hypnosis, they lived it day in and day out for years. They modeled it, along with Virginia Satir's therapy models, Moshe Feldenkrais movement models and others. This book is their primary work on the structure of Milton's trance inductions and his ability to create successful generative change in his patients. It is a must read for the serious student of hypnosis and a suggested read for everyone willing to work a bit to get to the good stuff.

1-0 out of 5 stars Convincing fiction
Sir Cyril Burt achieved unparalleled results in researching the effects of environment and heredity on identical twins.Only after his death did it become clear that the alleged research had never happened, that Burt lied to further what he perceived to be a greater truth.

5-0 out of 5 stars A psychotherapy practice could be built on this book!
I have recommended this book to one client who found it extremely useful as a means of managing his fear of death. Yalom's idea that the fears associated with the existential concerns of isolation, freedom, death, and sense of purpose form part of our subconscious-conscious dynamics is brilliant and original. He makes the argument that the anxieties associated with these concerns form a very early part of our experience and that they're repressed when the newborn is taught that it is not OK to experience these fears because he/she is either "special" or protected by a higher power, such as God. He states that the existential crises challenge these defenses creating depression, panic attacks, and other disorders. He develops these and many other useful notions all throughout the book. It is a long but fairly easy and clear read. If you're stymied by the length of the book you could start with his "The Gift of Therapy". Enjoy!

4-0 out of 5 stars Not morbid in the least
Yalom points out that people often use one of two opposite methods for quelling death-anxiety: the "myth of specialness" in which a person places themselves outside of humanity so as not to die, and the myth of an ultimate rescuer, where a person clings to the idea of a savior to whom they can be subjugated. Both are dysfunctional.Other than saying that love ameliorates but does not eliminate death-anxiety, Yalom fails to offer a construct for balancing inward and outward-directed methods of dealing with that most terrible of all prospects, one's personal annihilation.

My approach to Yalom came from literature. This is an interesting point of view of what our lives are supposed to be. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars User friendly. One textbook you're liable to keep.
Interviewing textbooks are notoriously dry and mechanical. I can count using the fingers of one hand the number of books I have read on the subject that are worth their weight in cotton candy. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Cognitive therapy classic
I read this book when I was going through a divorce several years ago.The handbook helped me to review the thinking that was contributing to my depression. Although my depression was situational, I was overwhelmed and was filtering information negatively.Recently, my son went through a depression and I gave him this book and another excellent book, Optimal Thinking--How to Be Your Best Self that provides specific questions to resolve disturbing emotions.I recommend each of these books. ...
