5-0 out of 5 stars All I can say is . . . WOW
First, I must say, I had never heard of Jimmy Weiskopf prior to purchasing this book, and I ran across it completely by accident. It was the last copy in a small bookstore I was visiting, and was selling for 30% off the cover price. So, without even reviewing the table of contents I took a risk and bought it, and am glad I did.

5-0 out of 5 stars Can science and herbs co-exist? Yes!
What makes this book stand out from the many hundred others out on the market is that it approaches the effects of herbs on thenervous system from a scientific, rather than pseudo- or anti-scientific, perspective. Rather than viewing herbs as being "alternative" and separate from science, Spinella scrutinizes the empirical evidence for and against the claimed effects of herbs on the brain. This book should be in every psychologist's, psychiatrist's, and physician's book shelf.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not just psychedelics
This book is a technical, complete and academic discussion of herbs that affect the brain, including therapeutic herbs, sedatives, as well as illicit herbs (herbs used to get a "high"). The author, Marcello Spinella, emphasis the importance of weighing all the risks and benefits of herbal medicine and discusses the latest research from scientific journals. Among the herbs reviewed here are valerian, chamomile, kava, passionflower and ginkgo. Also included is an overview of neuroscience and pharmacology. This is a very good reference book for someone serious about understanding how herbs affect the brain. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting AND informative
I bought this book to study for a quiz-out test for my Psych major.I read through three chapters the first time I picked it up.I usually have to force myself to complete an assignment, but with this book I just kept reading with no pushing whatsoever!I highly recommend this book to anyone taking a class in this subject, whether or not it is the required text.It would be a great additional information source. It is helpful if you or someone you know may be going through any type of drug or alcohol treatment--from caffeine to heroin.I also enjoyed the online quizzes you are allowed to access once you have the book.It really enforces what you have learned.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent source of information!
I thought this was an excellent source of informaion.I used it for a class and earned an A.Very thorough and easy to understand.Lay terms are frequently used and I found I learned a lot and found it very valuable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative and Strictly No-nonsense
This book is the source for unbiased information on the sociological, psychological, pathological effects of "drugs" - this compendium covers everything from caffeine to antipsychotics to alcohol topsychedelics and everything in between.A review of the history of eachdrug introduces each chapter.Careful attention is paid to not only theeffects of the drugs themselves, but the effect which they have on our lawsand the way in which treat addiction.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I Love MSM
MSM is wonderful for me.I have taken MSM for nearly 2 years now (off and on). I would quit taking it, just to see what would happen. It wouldn't take long before my pain and stiffness would return to my knees. I wouldn't want to go through life without MSM. I am able to go through life without pain in my knees when I take MSM on a regular schedule. I have had no problems taking MSM and I take 12,000 mg. a day. I use a powder MSM that I put in my water, which also encourages me to drink the water I need daily. I even use a MSM soap and lotion for my skin.It has helped my skin alot. I can't say enough good things about MSM. This is the first book I bought about MSM and would recommend it to anyone. I've also read many other papers and articles on MSM, plus I've read alot on the internet about MSM. In fact I've bought this book to give to other people. I am always telling the wonders of MSM to people. I wish you well and happy health.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Absolute Necessity for All Taking Psychiatric Drugs
This is a book that you simply must read. And yes, I will tell you why. In some cases, psychiatric drugs are necessary. And they will be a part of your treatment. I lost it when I gave complete control to my psychiatrists.I'll give you a short example. I said to one psychiatrist, "Could theValium AND the Prozac cause ill effects?" Answer, "I don't knowwhy it should." Later, I would find out that this answer would not begood enough! If you buy this book while you are taking psychiatric drugs, you will be taking responsibility for your own health care! Should you betaking this medication before bedtime? During meals? Before meals? Withaspirin? This book tells all so that you will not become addicted to Valiumlike I did. Please read it for your best care. Thank you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very fine technical work.
This is an important technical work for anyone concerned with Attention Deficit Disorder. While not ideal for those without advanced degrees, parents and adults in an ADHD system may find it worth their while to work through the highly specialized language. The articles assess from different scientific perspectives the trajectory of stimulant medication. While priced very fairly given its highly technical content, ADHD support groups maybe able to share the cost and the book. Members within the group could select a chapter, and then present it to their group. Most of the articles contain at least a few sections that will be understandable to non-scientists. Such a process could improve physician patient communication about the medication.Detractors of stimulant medication have to come to grips with the enormous relief that these medications provide for adults and children. While the specific locations and dynamics of the epenephrine and dopamine interactions remain shrouded, the clinical evidence overwhelming attested to the efficacy of stimulant medication. Until detractors can produce similar empirical data, resources have to be allocated to treatments that actually work. The book's purpose is to bring together the best and most current data available as a way of supporting and furthering pharmaceutical research. In this purpose the editor's and contributor's reveals science at its best, methodically navigating a dense forest of dimly understood variables in an attempt to relieve human suffering and push back the boundaries of ignorance. They echo our ancestors who learned to harness fire. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars It's a keeper!
As a gerontologist, I have read many books on drugs and drug interaction for elderly patients. All of them were thoughtfully written and had salient points. However, if you asked me to provide you with a list of books I've read on this subject, I couldn't help you. I didn't keep them. In fact, I gave them away. Nothing I have read seemed relevant to my work with elderly patients. However, I'll keep Salzman's book. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource on drugs for psychological/psychiatric disorders
This is a concise, readable, and logically coherent book that balances the fundamentally biological perspective of the material with a genuine introspection regarding the inconsistencies in the literature.Pulling from some of the most recent literature on the topic, it delineates the major uses, actions, and effects (both positive and negative) of each major psychopharmacological agent. The two most appealing additions to this book, setting it apart from its competition, are some rather compelling side bars focussed on critically thinking about the use and misuses of psychopharmacological agents, and the wonderful appendix that lists the major psychopharcalogical agents, with generic name, trade name, and manufacturers. I would highly recommend this book to any undergraduate or graduate student/professor with interest in/instructing a course in psychopharmacology.Furthermore, I would recommend it to anyone, both layperson and expert, who might have an interest in learning more about this complex area of study. ...
