5-0 out of 5 stars Easy Referance
This book was required reading for my Psychopharmacology class, and I am so glad this was chosen. It was easy to undersatnd and it is easy to referacne back too. I feel it should be part of any therpist's bookshelf.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource for the mental health professional
Dr. Diamond's pragmatic and commonsense approach is ideal for mental health professionals without (and with!!) a background in psychopharmacology. The book evolved from a handout he gave to nonmedical trainees with whom he worked. It's insightful, based on real clinical situations, and provides what you absolutely need to know plus more in an understandable format.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for a desktop reference!!
I am a school psychologist and with all the prescriptions that we need to know about in order to help students, this has been invaluable.New medications are always coming out and this book was very handy for knowing the side effects, which can be useful if a student is falling asleep in class and it is found that his medication causes drowsiness.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars simple, comprehensive book (on a SICK SUBJECT)
strong points:i'm a therapist who has many patients taking psychiatric meds, and while i don't prescribe them myself (nor have any desire to), i do need to know at least a thumbnail sketch about most of them.this book does the trick for me.it avoids the irrelevant and obscure detail of the Physician's Desk Reference and hits on the necessary basics (dosages, side effects, dangers, potential "benefits", brand versus generic names - and it has a good index!).4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful Information
For the person who is contemplating phsychiatric treatment, "medication" can have an intimidating impression especially if it is a foreign subject. The book will help you make you this important decision by giving you updated information on the newest prescription drugs. For those who are uncomfortable, alternatives and non-drug options are discussed as well.A wide range of psychiatric syndromes are covered: Anxiety disorders, ADD, Bipolar, Depression, Developmental disorders, Drug dependence, Eating disorders, Insomnia, Pshychosis, and even Alzheimer's Disease.A wide range is covered.. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent text and reference support for material
This book is an excellent synthesis of pharmacology and research based comments on drug pharmacology. To the point, not a bunch of extra gobbeltigook text to wade through like in Uppers, Downers and Allarounders. I work in the addiction field and this book covers the topic well in terms of neurochemistry as well as effects of drugs and their effects and legitmate uses, as well as some history on them.It also covers pharmacological treatment of drug addictions, again something that I use in my field.I use this book as a reference in my work. The references cited in the book are extensive and they are noted (numerically) after each statement in the text, which I prefer. I have often looked up the references for more information, although usually this text provides the information I need without a bunch of parenthetical B.S.
3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad but not great
I'm reading this book right now for one of my psych classes and although the reading is fairly easy (especially if you've taken a physio class) however the questions at the end of the chapter are a bit confusing.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Clear, Excellent and Concise Guide
The 10th Edition of Robert M. Julien's Primer of Drug Action is excellent both as a reference and as a primary text on psychoactive drugs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Medicine for Your Soul!
As a therapist I am always interested in books which will challenge my thinking and practice around my work with my clients. Here is a book which has helped me understand the underlying philosophical differences which come into play when making a diagnosis. Is my diagnosis driven by a mechanistic worldview or by a relational worldview? Will I follow the medical model rooted in a scientific cosmology or will I follow the relational model rooted in a spiritual cosmology. Why will I choose one or the other? Dr. Frattaroli provides a well-articulated arguement for choosing the latter.Utilizing a wonderfully written case study, Dr. Frattarolli lays out a clear argument for choosing a therapeutic model which heals the soul - the totallity of our being - over a medical model which only sedates the symptoms and leaves the inner being untouched. I recommend this book for all therapists who seek a broader understanding for the therapy they offer their clients.
5-0 out of 5 stars Important philisophically as well as psychologically
I think this will be a very important book.Dr. Frattaroli sees that we are not just machines, we have souls. There is much more to a human being than is seen on the surface - our unconscious minds seem to have been forgotten in today's culture. His philosophy cuts against the materialism that we in America encounter each time we turn on the TV. 4-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Companion to the Psychoanalytic Process
I had been immersed in the psychoanalytic process for over three years when I came across this book.Having experienced, first hand, the soulful aspects of analysis, both pleasant and painful, I connected instantly to Dr. Frattaroli's accounts of his work with patients.I am convinced that the only sane and solid path to emotional well being is the long, introspective one described so eloquently in this book.If you have ever considered beginning psychoanalysis (or you are simply interested in learning more about what it means to be fully human) then I strongly recommend that you read this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
I've read all editions of this book and I'm really impressed. Rosenbaum, et. al. are masters of the art of psychopharmacology. This book covers almost all areas relevant to practicing psychiatrists. Despite its breadth, you can finish reading the bookin a couple of days. Finally, this book is an excellent resource to review for the certification exam in Advanced Psychopharmacology offered by the American Society of Clinical Psychopharmacology (ASCP).

3-0 out of 5 stars Great but dated. . . .
This is an excellent book, but the information is about 3-4 years old (Probably 4-5 years if you consider the time to publishing)! That is pretty dated information for this field, especially with the MANY newer agents. Make a new edition guys!

5-0 out of 5 stars Handbook of Psychiatric Drug Therapy by George W. Arana, et
Excellent choice! If you buy this item you will acquire the basics of psychopharmacology psychiatry students need. I am a second year postgraduate student and found it very helpful, concise and updated. It presents the major indications, therapeutic uses, side effects, and mechanisms of action for every drug. The tables give you an easy way to compare each medication caracteristics and the book offers the facts that will help us choose the best drug that fits our patients needs. Its format let us carry it with us everywhere so we can take a quick look and review the information anytime we need it. I highly recommend it! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The most complete
THE most complete psychopharmacology clinical text. You will find rare side effects and drug-drug interactions that would be omitted in any other clinical text and that you would only discover by doing a literature search. Many tables make comparison between drugs of the same class easy. Also has a section on herbal products and pages of patient information sheets that can be photocopied and given to patients. This is a gem.

Editorial Review

Psychiatric drugs are prescribed to more than 20 million Americans. This book aims to convince us to stop taking these drugs, and to show us how to do it safely. The authors contend that after 15 minutes with a physician or psychiatrist, Americans are prescribed medications that we may take for years or a lifetime, which can do more harm than good. We're irritable, anxious, emotionally numbed, physically fatigued, and mentally dulled. Yet when we stop taking the drugs, we encounter a whole new set of problems and setbacks.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank you, Peter Breggin
I'm glad Peter Breggin is telling the truth about the dangerous drugs that are being pushed on more and more of us.The drugs that are supposed to "fix" people are turning them into zombies, and more of our children are drugged each day.
5-0 out of 5 stars Down from 32 to 5 pills a day
My wife has reduced her medication from 32 pills a day to 5 a day using the gradual reduction approach described in this book. She was withdrawn and unable to interact with the children at all before. Now she is her children's "Mommy" in a much more real sense and can actually experience real joy from time to time (not possible shen emotions are suppressed by the drugs). This author may seem extreme, but if you want to try reducing you medication, get the book and follow the advice whether you agree with the reasons for wholesale criticism of psychiatric meds or not.

5-0 out of 5 stars life saver!
This is a very good and honest book, helping people overdiagnosed and overmedicated.I am one who read this after being told I would do terrible if not taking psychiatric drugs over 5 years ago and I read this book, changed counselors, and was able to come off psychiatric medication that was making it difficult for me to function.I am doing fine now, dealing with problems in a sensible way, getting along well with others, working, and enjoying life, with no psychiatric treatment, only compassionate counseling that I find is helpful.I recommend it for anyone prescribed psychiatric medication or studying psychology.

This concise, well written guide to prescribing mental health medication is as helpful to me, a Family Nurse Practitioner who works in a low-income community health center, as it would be to a specialist working in private practice. All medical professionals are encountering more patients with mental health diagnoses and many of them require pharmacotherapy.I found this book to be very helpful in my primary care practice and encourage my colleagues and other prescribers to purchase it for their own reference collections. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Courageous and Truthful Textbook on the Psychiatric Drugs
I am a physician and psychiatrist currently using this textbook for a graduate course in psychopharmacology in the United States. It is the first and only textbook I feel that comes close to the truth of what the field of psychopharmacology is really about. The information is invaluble for anyone taking psychiatric medication, anyone prescribing psychiatric medication, or anyone loving anyone on psychiatric medication. I have come over the years to see the sad truth that science these days is being severly compromised by marketplace economics. Since our science is no longer truly in the hands of scientists, it behooves us to listen to someone who has the insider knowledge about how the data is manipulated and his valuable speculations on how the drugs really work. From my view, he is an unrecognized pioneer who can give us hope and inspiration about a very important aspect of our society: the use of drugs to modify and control our emotions.

2-0 out of 5 stars Very Disappointed
This book is more of a medical-school textbook describing the major drug categories. It only mentions briefly the principal drugs in each.
5-0 out of 5 stars Indispensable
Now in its third edition, this is an indispensable book for mental health professionals. Although written from the UK perspective, it does list the US and UK proprietary names for drugs. It is very clearly laid out for easy reference with a comprehensive index and references for further reading if needed.
