Better than a $100 psychopharmacology text
I strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in getting real facts about psychoactive drugs.Don't be fooled by the low price or the fact that it is "nontechnical."(All that means is that psychiatrists can read it without digging though their biochem notes!) An accessible balanced approach to drug action
This is the third edition of this book that I own.As a dual diagnosis counselor I have found this book to be an invaluable resource.The psychopharmacology of both drugs of abuse and mental health medications are explained in a detailed manner that is very accessible.I find it a valuable resource in helping me educate clients about drug action.

Great info on meds
Medication is one of the scariest aspects of treating childhood mental illness.This book provides a wealth of easily understood information.This is a great book that should be used in combination with other books that help parents handle the other aspects of treating their children's disorders.Two I recommend for Bipolar Disorder are "If Your Child is Bipolar" and "The Bipolar Child."The more helpful resources out there the better.These are books that should definately be on parents' shelves.

An excellent source of information about medication choices
It can be overwhelming and confusing to try and figure out which drug is best for a particular child with a special condition. This book explores all sorts of psychiatric drugs for conditions ranging from Attention Deficit Disorder to depression, bipolar disorder, etc. Each section is clear and each medication is discussed fully, including possible side effects. I've often felt like doctors haven't fully answered my questions about certain medications but this book helped me to fill in the gaps and feel confident about the choices I made for my child. The best book on the subject I've found so far (and I've looked at quite a few books).

Basic help for the parent with a mentally ill child
I highly recommend this book to any parent who is contemplating putting their child on psychiatric medications.My child has been struggling on/off for the past three years with a number of issues that finally lead to an evaluation for psychiatric medication.The psychiatrist, while skilled, is unable to provide the support and education necessary to the parent to make this major decision an easier one.This book filled in the gaps.It was extremely readable and provided very helpful information regarding the various disorders and the preferred medications for treatment.While I have not yet decided to place my child on medication, this book will make the decision making process much easier. ... Excellent Reference for Psych professionals
Does the job. Not too wordy. GREAT reference book for beginning clinicans and seasoned professionals. I highly recommend it.

A great reference bookfor consumers !!
John Preston's book is concise, clear, and efficient. It will provide the reader with a simple and sufficient overview of psychotropic medications and the basic concepts in psychopharmacology. This book can also be very handy for the busy clinician.

Overly simplistic - not the information I was looking for
The cover of this book jumped out at me - I was expecting more of an analysis of the psychiatric profession and the methods used over the years. Instead, what I got was a long plug for his own method - Choice Theory.
lots of opinions and guesses, few facts
The cover and overviews make reference to Glasser's book being supported by facts.So, I was looking forward to it.Unfortunately, it is short on facts and long on his opinions.
Exposes the Myth of Psychiatry
Some of the psychiatrists or psychiatrists in training that have reviewed this book are sadly influenced by the ideologies and pressupositions of their industry. The fact is, science has never proven that there is such a thing as a non-organic mental illness. The reason why people behave the way they do and have a variety of symptoms is far more complex than "they are lacking some serotonin." Most psychiatrists have already bought into the myth of chemical imbalance as CAUSATIVE of illness. Deep down they have to know this is a leap, if they are truly honest (the human mind is too complex to reduce to single neurotransmitters). Glasser and others have pointed out this leap for years. It is in the best interest of the patient to be honest with them and to genuinely help them get better and live better lives, not just hand them a prescription and say, "See you in a month." Well worth the read
Ralph Metzner's book Ayahuasca: Human Consciousness and the Spirits of Nature (1st edition) and Sacred Vine of Spirits: Ayahuasca (2nd edition) is an excellent overview of modern conceptions of Ayahuasca and where and how they originated.

the bridging gap

Foundational Reading
This book was shared with me by a college girlfriend who was taking a graduate Biology of the Brain course at the University of Iowa.I confess that I only read it out of love and admiration for her, as I expected only a dry, clinical text.But this book grabbed me with its honesty, its openness, and its accessibility.I found it impossible to put down as I explored a range of substances that I had only heard of, but often wondered what they were and how they worked.The book is written with soul, conscience, great depth of understanding, and honesty.I am grateful to her even today for sharing it with me.I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking to understand these substances which are all around us in our communities, like it or not.

On furthering the truth about mind-altering "drugs"
I first was introduced to this book when a medical student in l976 in Arizona.Presented is a very expansive look at all mind-altering substances used in all cultures, with new definitions of those socially acceptable and not in our own culture.This belongs on every library shelf.I very quickly learned to see the many new insights into behavior vis-a-vis effects of all substances on the mind.I happen to be a fan or Dr. Weil's contraversial health information, but for those who have no interest, this material is fairly unrelated and more of a contribution to our understanding of culturally prescibed and proscribed mind altering substances.As an abstainer from cigarettes, coffee, alcohol, chocolate and recreational drugs, I was better able to understand the behavior of the majority who do use the above.This is also an excellent book for parents of teenagers, to further understanding on this vital topic.We need, as a nation to rethink our policies on a lucrative industry which is not taxed due to not being legal and also to look at the consequences of youthful consequences. ... For anyone who knows a child
This is one of those books I bought for the title.The title is a play on the notorious No Child Left Behind act and its role in federal education policy, notorious not only for its lack of funding, but also for its excessive reliance on standardized testing.My only regret with No Child Left Different is that it did not take on that particular set of villains.
