Editorial Review

With the extraordinary growth in understanding the biochemical workings of the brain, psychotherapy is experiencing its most profound transition in the 20th century: from couches to pills. This book is an essential guide to the chemical treatment of disorders such as ADD, anxiety, bipolar disorders, depression and other conditions. Highly recommended to clinical psychologists, counselors and social workers, and also to patients, current or future, being treated with pharmacological substances. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Basic but essential ..
I'm a clinical psychologist. You need to have this book . You need to understand the psychopharmacology of your patients. Lots of interesting and important information regarding Dx and the effects of Rx. The only problem with this book is (as you know) things are changing so fast that we need a new edition.

3-0 out of 5 stars not as promised
I was disappointed in this book. Although it has many ideas for practice building, very little of it applies specifically to finding clients who are willing to go around their insurance plans and pay cash for services. The rest of it could be found in any good marketing book. I was specifically interested in strategies for finding clients who will pay cash - all she really says here is that you need to be able to tell them why they should.

5-0 out of 5 stars How to build a thriving fee for service practice
I found this book to have concise information relative to the industry.Kolt's concept of creating "Niche" practice is pertinent to survival in the industry. This and Lynn Grodski's book on "Building your ideal Practice" are a great duo for anyone needing a boost in business mindset. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative
One of the good books in psychopharmacology. The details are crisp and informative but not too overwhelming. Although the format remains 'traditional' (separate sections for antidepressants, antianxiety, and antipsychotic meds), this text is great for clinicians, students, and trainees.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thorough Review for the Office
I found this book very helpful in many areas. For one it is one of the few that actually a have list of the MAO diet- it is even easy to copy to hand to patients. It not only talks about drugs that are on the market but also those not approved yet or those used in Europe. AAlthough it only barely fits in your lab coat, it is not heavy to carry. At the same time it is not too small without giving a thorough review as some small poacket books do. I recommend this to everyone but in particular for those on consultation liason service as well as training residents or fellows - being an upper level resident myself, I know the usefulness of this book from experience.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great manual without much competition...
Great manual but there are not that many options to choose from in this field if you want a book small enough to carry in your lab coat. In every way this book is top notch and has practical application for daily practice. It includes plenty of "cut to the chase" advice on how to manage these medicines. My only complaint is that the book is from 1997 and plenty has changed since then in the field. ... Read more

In it's second edition, the bookdivides into two essential overviews that are very"user friendly".The first part profiles a general clinical psychopharmacology which provides a well written and comprehensible neuroanatomy review, which is basic to the understanding ofhow psychotropic drugs work. The mental disorders are discussed which these drugs are used to treat, along with ECT, abuse dynamics andinterventions.Read more

Editorial Review

The odds are high that someone close to you has been told he or she has a "chemical imbalance" in the brain, but the odds are slim that the doctor who said it could point to any convincing evidence that it was true. The increasing awareness that most biological theories underlying diagnoses of depression, schizophrenia, and other mental problems are based very loosely on accidental drug discoveries and promoted heavily by pharmaceutical companies is the basis for neuroscientist Elliot S. Valenstein's book Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Alarmist hysteria from a man who knows nothing about depression
Ronald Dworkin's book does a disservice to anyone who could be helped by antidepressants, or who is currently being helped by them. He raises an alarm over a problem that doesn't exist. In the first chapter of his book he refers to people who take antidepressants as "stupefied", which is an outrageous and reckless claim to make.On what basis can he make this claim?
3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting Book
The book is very interesting with a lot of valid points but I believe the author goes too far in purporting that people who take antidepressants become some sort of happy zombies uninterested in making changes to better their lives. Being on antidepressants does not mean that all the ups and downs of life are flatlined, you can still feel unhappiness and be compelled to make changes for the better, in fact he himself gives an example of an unhappy engineer who wanted to be a musician but did not have the guts to make the career change in the face of his family and friends' disapproval. He only made the life change once he started taking antidepressants. I believe it is the little things, like traffic and day-to-day annoyances that are minimized with the use of antidepressants that is of course for people who are not seriously depressed, for those who are, antidepressants can be life savers.

5-0 out of 5 stars You will love it or you will hate it.
I loved this book, "Artificial Happiness", because the author articulated in a well thought and researched fashion exactly what has not been discussed enough.Unhappiness is NOT a disease.Unhappiness, contrary to pharmaceutical advertisements and "doctors advice" is a natural and normal consequence of the "downs" in the "ups & downs" of life.It is the red light on the dashboards of our lives that prompts us to make constructive changes.Or it was.

1-0 out of 5 stars The Rest of the Story
This is a very famous and a very influential book. This was not the first time I checked the book out of the library but I now know much more about antidepressants and the related issues than I did when I first became familiar with Kramer's book. What I found on my quick survey of the book this time amazed me. This is not a book supported by research. It is a book of stories. The stories, one after the other, are about Kramer's patients (Kramer is a psychiatrist) and how taking Prozac dramatically transformed lives overnight. Consider these four examples.
1-0 out of 5 stars The psychiatrist that launched the Prozac Myth
This is the book that launched the myth that pharmacology could do to the psyche what cosmetic surgery does for the human body. After all the hype and hoopla in the media the reality that SSRI's in general are breakthrough medications for depression have fallen to the sidelines. Prior to 1993 Prozac was handed out only to patients who had severe cases of ocd and depression. Although the SSRI's have a better side effect profile they are not more effective then older meds. Kramer claims to have witnessed miraculous changes in a handful of patients where no other doctor has.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Good Book
This is a great book to read if you want to know about Prozac. It isn't written with all the medical lingo to where you don't understand. It is written for the average person and easy to understand and comprehend.Loaded with tons of great information. Highly Recommended. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars long lists and more lists
The whole style of this book is very dry and not usersfriendly. The book consists of long lists of objectives and therapeutic interventions each 1 or 2 lines. Sometimes more then 40. It tells you all the time WHAT to do ( exc. [*] emotional impact or educate the patient on effects of stress on symptons)but NEVER HOW .This information is not very helpfull. Everybody knows for example that walking 20 minutes a day is healthy but HOW do you get somebody to do it.That should be the focus of behavioral medicine ( it s about getting to healthy behavior, no ?)This important part: HOW to get to behavior change is not present in this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars After reading Essential Psychopharmacology of Antipsychotics and Mood Stabilizers
Almost all of us feel that the psychopharmacology is complex and difficult to understand. But this book solves the problems.Clearly figures help us understand psychopharmacology easily.
1-0 out of 5 stars Don't be fooled by the title!!
As soon as I looked inside the book I saw that it is really about the treatment of schizophrenia.I was interested in updated information about the use of lithium and anticonvulsants , which are what one usually means by "mood stabilizers".There are 16 pages on these medications in the whole book. There is lots of information on the newer antipsychotics, which I expected and wanted too- but it was focused on the treatment of schizophrenia. So, don't be fooled by the title ( or the editorial reviews).I didn't read the book because I needed to keep it in pristine condition to return it. ... Read more
