Popular science? - Not for "people"; not for "scientists".
I found this book after several hours of fruitless searching. What I was looking for was a quick, science-based introduction to drugs and addiction that would give me bits of pharmacology, psychology, and neurobiology, with a few cultural, social, and historical ideas thrown in too. Cieran Regan's book looked ideal, but it was a big disappointment. A smashing little brain-book
Intoxicating minds is exactly what the title suggests: a text about brain drugs and drugged brains. Mind-bending drugs are the order of the day, including those used to bend the mind back to "normal" and those used so commonly that their effects are taken for granted. The whole gamut of psychoactive pharmacology is sampled and discussed: alcohol and nicotine, uppers and downers, hallucinogens and psychedelics, and tea and coffee. Not what I thought it would be.

A brilliant read for users and non-users alike
This book takes no moral stand on the issue of legal and illegal drug use.It rather lays out the facts and dispells myths.Of all the literature I have read, this comes closest to describing the drug experience.Parents,if you are worried that your children are using, throw out D.A.R.E.'sill-intentioned propaganda and pick up Tyler's well-researched work.Users- before you try the next thing, read the chapter in this book, and yourexperience promises to be that much safer and more fulfilling.This is a_great_ work, worthy of more praise than I can heap upon it. ... Bridges for Healing
This book has given me new insight into and appreciation of psychopharmacology and psychotherapy. Dr. Resnikoff's model promotes flexibility and balance in the use of medication and therapy: His model demonstrates how crucial it is for the therapist to observe and listen to client(s) initially, and as therapy proceeds. The examples that Resnikoff offers should help individuals and especially therapists in training learn the value and importance of integrating therapy and psychopharmacology.

Psychology Meets Biology
As a non-professional in family therapy, it took me a couple of chapters to fully understand Dr. Resnikoff's model.My bias against using drugs in therapy was also a hurdle I needed to overcome in appreciating Resnikoff's thesis which is that therapists need to be less dogmatic and adopt a kind of post-modern approach to therapy. Rather than dismissing one approach or school of thought for another, the author has developed a multi-dimensional model incorporating "talk therapy" and "drug therapy" in the treatment of patients.At the end of the day, Resnikoff's inclusivity and open-mindedness won me over where I understood and fully appreciated his complex approach.The "read" gets good too when he introduces case studies and examples from his own life to the text.Although not a simple book for a non-professional in psychotherapy, I found the book very rewarding.I find myself using Resnikoff's model as I go through life.
