3-0 out of 5 stars A lot of text but many unanswered questions
I take no issue with Christian Ratsch. He is a prolific writer and someone with influence in the world of ethnobotany. However, I want to write a valuable and honest review here. This book is enormous. I know of no other book worth buying that contains as many plants as this one (in relation to a mind enhancing context). In this regard, the book is highly valuable. There are also plenty of photos which give it an artistic quality.
5-0 out of 5 stars All in one place.
Save time and research. This book is huge and packed.Has information on just about any natural drug source legal or not. This book is so big and packed full of information it would be hard to ever get tired of thumbing through this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating
I must admit that once I picked this book up it was hard to put down. A very intriguing book that explores the history and role of psychedelics, primarily DMT. Strassman has excellent insight and I believe his research has produced a significant leap for further discussion and research into the field of psychadelics. A must read for anyone even remotely interested in the topic.

2-0 out of 5 stars Mind Candy, but with an Aftertaste
This book is a bit ponderous, to say the least - that's because I was interested in his clients' experiences and not the pedantic research crap (like the fact that they had to flush the IVs with saline). Lots of stuff in here begs the question, "Who Cares???" A better editor would have done this book wonders. Regarding the research, I find it highly disconcerting that EVERY ONE of his guinea pigs were huge into drugs. There was not a single person who was not a regular user of some kind of drug, and what's more, had done acid or 'shrooms hundreds of times. What would have been far more compelling is if he had done the test on people with a high level of spirituality but didn't require chemically altered states to achieve it. The book was poorly written and the research was questionable.
5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing.
This book is incredibly scientiic. It does not appear to be overly idealistic about the subject matter. it actually offers a very realistic sense of the nature of psychedeclics and the role they play in contemporary society. The book is mostly cold hard facts that are often not entirely optimistic, but invredibly relevant. The final chapters do provide some speculations that would be of interest to anyone who studies the nature of consciousness and the idea of quantum realities. Strassman does indeed lay some solid groundwork for some pretty outrageous ideas. He presents them in a way that clearly indicates that he is aware of the response that these speculations may evoke from a great portion the population. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Neuropharmacology
This reference is easy to read. As well, unlike most pharmacology texts, this one does not concentrate on drugs, but rather on the underlying physiology. There is an introduction to neurons, synapses and action potentials. There is an introduction to modern molecular methods. It is interesting to note that in describing molecular cloning methods, the work of J. G. Sutcliffe, R.J. Milner, and F.E. Bloom is reported whereby a cDNA library was prepared from mRNAs from whole rat brain, then it was seen what individual cDNAs hybridized with the mRNAs from rat liver and kidney. Approximately 30,000 of the brain's 50,000 mRNAs were not detected in the liver or kidney, showing that much of the rat's DNA is for neuronal purposes. In the introduction to receptors, it is noted that there about a thousand known receptors to neurotransmitters, hormones and odorants. The introduction to neuromodulators includes the neuronal effects of nitric oxide (thought to be involved in both long-term potentiation LTP and long-term depression LTD; nitric oxide synthase inhibitors will block NMDA receptor activation). The chapter on amino acid neurotransmitters includes excitatory glutamate and aspartate, and inhibitory GABA, glycine, alanine, cystathionine and serine. There are chapters on cholinergic (acetylcholine) and catecholaminergic (norepinephrine, epinephrine and dopamine) neurotransmitters. Serotonin and histamine neurotransmitters are considered in detail in the next chapter. There is an introduction to neuroactive peptides, noting that they must be synthesized on ribosomes, then at the smooth endoplasmic reticulum they are put into vesicles in a prohormonal form, and only then transported to the nerve terminals. The book concludes with introductions to the cellular mechanisms involved in learning, and the involvement of neurotransmitters in neurological and psychiatric illnesses.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introductory glimpse of neuropharmacology
This book is an excellent introductory text, suitable for undergraduates or "outsiders", outlining the basic principles of neuropharmacology. Reviews of the major concepts involved in neurotransmission are included in the first half of the book, such as cellular and molecular (read DNA) biological basics as well as descriptions of amino acid based neurotransmission. The second half of the book is organized with each chapter devoted to a single molecule. My major criticism is that although the title is "The BIOCHEMICAL Basis of Neuropharmacology", the chemistry in the text is rather simple and incomplete, and the lack of quantitative discussion of pharmacokinetics is a major disappointment. All beginning students of neuropharmacology should purchase this book - in paperback it is truly a bargain.END ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Well presented
This is one of the best books ever in psychopharmacology. Not only that it's written in a clear way and with much authority, it's also very entertaining. The tables and figures are effective in simplifying the complexity of the neural circuitry. Awesome text!

5-0 out of 5 stars Stahl is a must-read for those interested in psychopharmacology
More than one professor with whom I have worked have called Stahl their "hero."Although some professionals disagree with some of his assertions, I have not spoken to one colleague who hasn't been impressed by his insights and ability to present information in a clear fashion.Even if you find other books on psychopharmacology that you like better, you can't go wrong with getting Stahl's perspective on the topic. If you are very serious minded, then his diagrams might seem a little "cutesy" at times. However, for visual learners his diagrams highlight neurological mechanisms so you can get a clear picture in your mind about different mechanisms of action.Obviously, these physiological mechanisms are not as simplistic as drawn, but the drawings give the reader a clearer picture of what he is writing about. If you are serious about learning the essentials of psychopharmacology, then this is a great book to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Major Hit !!!
Stahl's book "Essential Psychopharmacology: Neuroscientific Basis and practical Applications" is a fantastic book! It is lucid, simple, jargon free with fabulous illustrations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Psychopharmacology for Depression - and More
This is a remarkable book - remarkable for its authority, its unusual learning friendliness inthe context of the recognized national reputation of the author. The information is presented both visually and by text, with the advice to "read the pictures and subtext" first and then review the book. The learning of a deep and compicated subject thus becomes pleasure.
5-0 out of 5 stars No wonder I'm not a brain doctor
Fabulous, interesting, understandably written, and highly technical, current information. As a long time member of the bipolar community, I constantly search for information that will help me to understand my disorder, express the causes and effects to other consumers and interested parties and to be more fully capable of being a proactive consumer with my medical professionals. The book is an easy read, can be put down when your brain is reaching max capacity and picked up like you never lost a beat.

Editorial Review

5-HTP is a naturally derived amino acid that has been shown in comprehensive studies to be safer than prescription drugs for the treatment of insomnia and depression, and can also be used for treating obesity, migraine headaches, fibromyalgia, and premenstrual syndrome. It may prove to be more popular than St. John's wort for the treatment of depression and other serotonin-related conditions, as it's been shown to produce results in as little as two weeks, while the herb may take a month or longer. 4-0 out of 5 stars Advertised as New but was used
This is not a review but a critique. The book was advertised as new and I paid the "new" price, but it was used. There were several pages with penciled-in answers. The book itself is Murray's usual fine work.

2-0 out of 5 stars Incomplete and full of inconsistencies
While this book presents some interesting and possibly even helpful information, Murray destroys his credibility by his glaring contradictions. For example, on page 33 he says, "5-HTP...cannot be metabolized by the liver into kynurenine."Then on page 238 he says, "...if vitamin B6 levels are low, then more 5-HTP will get converted in the liver into another substance, kynurenine."5-0 out of 5 stars Don't Worry, Be Happy!

This thoroughly researched and practical book was written by Stan Walters, a retired police interrogation specialist with over 25 years' experience. The purpose of his book is to help interrogators rely on highly successful and proven techniques in recognizing deceptive behaviors in speech quality, speech content, and especially body language.

5-0 out of 5 stars Won't leave home without it!
I am new at this prescribing thing and seem to have a whole lot more questions than I have answers... The Prescriber's Guide truly is "Essential" ... I have long been a fan of Stahl and his ability to make dry and difficult material come to life and thereby easier to understand ... even makes me laugh ... I can not say enough good things about this book- it offers a wealth of practical "real world" information about prescribing and answers "newbie" questions that typically beget the "you'll learn that with experience" answer. An absolute MUST HAVE for the novice prescriber- thank you Stephen Stahl!

5-0 out of 5 stars Another gem!
Another gem from Dr. Stahl! The format, illustrations, and simplified explanations are just amazing. No doubt, this book is an excellent resource for students, trainees, and practicing psychiatrists.
