4-0 out of 5 stars Informative But Technical
Because the text is a compilation of chapters by different authors, the style and content vary dramatically. The book functions very well as an introductory text for sex therapy and gives a fairly comprehensive overview of the major topics in the field.

5-0 out of 5 stars Historical foundation
I would strongly recommend this book to anyone wanting a historical perspective of the development of psychoanalytic theory. This book takes you through different offsprings of psychoanalysis beginning with Freud's contribution. It also offers a comparison of each new theory with classic Freudian psychoanalytic thought so you have an idea of which aspects were further developed and which ones were "trashed."It's a good foundational book for anyone beginning an interest in psychoanalysis.

1-0 out of 5 stars "and Beyond" could have been a good read....
This could have been a valuable reference. The front cover lists 39 names, some well known, others so obscure as to invite interests to learn more.Try to find these 39 when opening the book.Only in the Index. At least two pages, as chapters, should have provided insight into the thoughts of these 39 names who appeared under the caption, "A History of Modern Psychoanalytic Throught."However, Chapter headings only cover Freud, Sullivan, Klein, Fairbairn/Winnicott, Erikson/Kohut, and Kernberg/Schafer/Loewald/Lacan--and that's it.Eleven theorists.
5-0 out of 5 stars Pschoanalysis in Layman's terms
Very good book for someone who is just learning about pschoanalysis.Good examples of clinical application and a very common sense approach to psychology.A much easier read than other texts such as The Freud Reader.Good stuff. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth a look--Bowen's definitely got something.
This is a well organized, thoughtful book telling the origins and details of Bowen theory. I particularly like the many cases covered in this book. It appears that they got promising results in helping families with schizophrenic children. There is also a chapter where Dr. Bowen talks about his own efforts at differentiating within his family of origin. It's one thing to talk theory--another to apply it to yourself and then write about it. Fantastic.

It's rare to find books that are both academically credible and accessible to the layperson. This book is the exception, and the content is truly life changing. It is unfortunate that most of the people who read this book are psychologists or psychiatrists who see it as "just another method" and go back to their simplistic "find the problem and fix it" techniques.5-0 out of 5 stars Read this book if you know any people

5-0 out of 5 stars I loved this book!
It was one of a few required texts for a Buddhism class. I chose it because I have an interest in psychology, particularly the psychodynamic perspective (unconscious motivation) and this book added to my life in such a way! I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to learn about Buddhism and freeing one's "self" from the limitations of convention.I don't agree with everything in it, but this is a book for my collection, definitely.

5-0 out of 5 stars A remarkable blend of Buddhism and psychology
The first chapter of this book alone is worth the purchase price.I have it dogeared, and refer back to it frequently. The author uses the Buddhist Wheel of Life as a metaphor for states of pschological suffering. His explanations are both clear and intriguing. This book will interest students of psychology and Buddhism alike.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
I think this book is an absolutely wonderful introduction to a particular subset of Buddhist philosophy, and done so in such a way that it may benefit our own lives as well as the academic and practices of psychology today.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars It is not wisdom always to be wise Columbus found a new world and had no chart save one that faith deciphered with his eyes
Crews does a first- rate demolition job on a number of Freudian theories. These speculative theories according to Crews have been subject to no true empirical test, and thus have no real weight of evidence beyond them. One would only have wished that Crews while debunking Freud nonetheless would have acknowledged him to be a true pioneer in the overall human effort to understand ourselves, primarily through his bringing to general consciousness the central importance of sexuality in our lives.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wisdom of the very wise
According to its opening words, "not everyone will like this book", and probably that is true. In particular, people who still believe in psychoanalysis, or just that Sigmund Freud was a great thinker who advanced our understanding of human psychology, will hate this book. Others who have espoused more recent sets of irrational beliefs, such as "intelligent design", will find much to dislike. All of these may well constitute a majority of the reading public, but they should still leave a substantial minority who will appreciate Frederick Crews's surgical skill in dissecting much of the nonsense that passes for science.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good
This book is fantastic! It really explains why some people end up with personality disorders and how to go about having a person see their dysfunctional patterns. The book is well structured with good outlines of the various schemata. However, after about page 70, it gets a bit repetitive. The case illustrations are helpful, though I couldn't help noticing how neatly well packaged they were. Schema therapy definitely provides an excellent framework within which to conceptualize personality disorders.Apparently it is more helpful to borderline personality disorder than psychodynamic therapy. So,in summary, while I really appreciated how personality disorders were conceptualized, I found the book a bit repetitive... For a more 'academic' approach, you might want to try the Handbook of Personality Disorders.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Schema TherapyBible
This highly professional yet clearly articulated book covers the history, concepts, and techniques of Schema Therapy. While this therapeutic approach originated in cognitive therapy, it has evolved into a systematic ecclecticism that includes cognitive, behavioral, experiential, and other useful techniques for identifying and healing schemas, modes, coping patterns, etc.Highly recommended for the professional with an interest in helping clients alter personality disorders and other disturbances that are resistant to other therapeutic approaches.Fred P. Gallo, PhD, author of "Energy Psychology" and co-author of "The Neurophysics of Human Behavior"

5-0 out of 5 stars Thought provoking development in integrative therapy
As a psychodynamically trained therapist, I have sensed for many years that a 'pure' approach to therapy has severe limitations. This led me to get further training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and to use this with my clients - to some good effect. However, I felt uncomfortable using this 'either, or' approach to therapy (either psychodynamic OR CBT) and have been trying for a long time to work out a way of integrating these two approaches in my practice.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Putting on the brakes"- making trauma therapy safer
This book is refreshing, well written and easy to read - it is full of sound common sense (something often lacking these days!) It stands on its own or can be read as a useful adjunct to Babette's earlier excellent book on the psychophysiology of trauma.Babette's wisdom, style and honesty around the many different approaches and tools for working with trauma are covered extensively and most usefully as fascinating case studies. I especially appreciated the chapter on learning from our mistakes and failures and the surprising fact that clients respect honest ignorance and they often don't get enough of it in the therapeutic encounter.Adaptability is the key word here..that is adapting to the unique needs of each client.Read more

This book is an excellent resource for students. I used this book for the purpose of review while taking a graduate course in Marriage and Family Therapy. I would recommend this book to students and therapists alike.

5-0 out of 5 stars An enormously important book.
Physical abuse. Sexual abuse. Chronic neglect. Domestic violence. Auto accidents. School shootings. Unfortunately, there is no shortage of ways for children to be traumatized.Just as unfortunately, research intochildren's trauma and the development of treatment methods often lagbehaind adult counterparts. Filling a major gap in the eye movementdesensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) literature, veteran therapistsRobert Tinker and Sandra Wilson are making available, in compellinglyreadable form, the techniques they have used successfully with childrenfrom Oklahoma City to Rwanda.Geared equally to the child clinicianinterested in adding this powerful modality and to the experienced EMDRpracttioner, "Through the Eyes of a Child" cuts through themystery to illuminate the method."It's like you took a magicwand, and said'Bing! You can live now!" --The mother of a six-year-old who had been severely sexuallyabused when she was 18months old.Clinical examples and session transcripts demonstrate EMDRat work with children and teenagers who have experienced a range of acuteand ongoing traumas, from molestation by a sibling to the suicide of aparent, from near-death in a lightning storm to the emotional upheaval of abitter custody battle. (Additional cases show its efficacy in dealing withproblems that may not necessarily be trauma-related, among them ADHD,simple phobias, attachment disorder, and learning disabilities.) Tinker and Wilson make important comparisons between pediatric and adultapplications of the method at the diagnostic and assessment levels, andmodify the treatment protocol to fit youngsters at various stages ofdevelopment. The standard eye movements, for example, are inappropriate formost children under age five, but they respond well to other forms ofleft-right stimulation. To keep therapeutic goals clearly in sight, direct, concerte language is usually preferable to the metaphoric language commonlyaccompanying desensitization. The authors are acutely aware of someEMDR therapists' reservations about working with children, and they haveincluded plenty of guidelines so that readers can accuaratly guage youngclients' reactions, minimize the possibility of dissociation, and--mostimportantly--avoid retraumatization. (One rule that can't beoveremphasized: establish a "safe place" that can be returned towhen necessary.) Clinical and legal caveats, suggestions for combining EMDRwith other forms of therapy, and ideas for involving parents are includedas well. With clients this young, significant results often come atan accelerated pace. This can be surprising to clinicians used toconducting adult-length sessions, but as one seven-year-old described theeffect of EMDR on his nightmares, "[They] just cleared out of mybrain."

5-0 out of 5 stars I will unreservedly recommend the book to all.
Despite the child focus, I believe this book is essential reading for all who either use or intend to use EMDR, especially with children. Due to the inevitable developmental influence of much of adult trauma it is animportant reference text for all to consider. Any criticism is perhaps onlybecause the general standard is so high that one expects this work to bethe fountain of all knowledge when in essence it is a brilliant text aboutEMDR with children containing a wealth of knowledge. The book is blendedlike a fine, smooth malt whisky. It has a unique combination of evidencebased fact, neurobiological overview, exellent clinical case description, instruction and anecdote based on many years of skilled experience with arare style that makes it extremely palatable, with continued satisfactionwhen you resample it. The hallmarks of true expertise were met by theauthors' conversion of complexity to simplicity with minimal loss of data.Tinker & Wilson are a rare hybrid of 'gifted researcher andcompassionate, effective clinician' who have given generously of their timeto fellow professionals and patients. I will unreservedly recommend thebook to all. ... Read more

Jung's books are not easy reads, but they are almost invariably eye-openers.I recommend first reading his student's works (von Franz, Barbara Hanna, Joland Jacobi), his "Man and His Symbols," & (especially with respect to this book) Joseph Campbell & Jean Shinoda Bolen. It helps a lot to understand mythology when exploring the collective unconscious.Jung goes to great lengths to show how the denizens of the collective unconscious (archetypes--universal images~Plato's view) map onto very different cultures throughout time & space--appearing in art, dreams, visions, etc.Bolen uses Greek goddesses & gods to depict these.Jung disliked neologisms (creating new words) instead he transplanted them from other disciplines to map into his psychological theories & constructs--thus, "archetypes" & "complexes"--paralleling General Systems Theory (cf. biologist von Bertalanfy's works)."Complex" comes from mathematics' complex numbers.Jung knew & conversed with physicist Pauli, Kabbalah professor Scholem, & many other famous, high-caliber scholars. It is important to realize, when reading this book, the important differences between archetypes of the collective unconscious & complexes of the personal unconscious--though they have the same names! Thus, the mother archetype is the pure image of motherhood--with both positive & negative aspects. But, each person has an actual, individual mother (or lack thereof--absent mother). The interaction or combination of these two forms one's mother complex. As in math, it has a rational part (actual mother) & an imaginary part (archetype). In math, the imaginary part is multiplied by i, the square root of minus 1--which cannot exist, yet mathematicians use it creatively! So does Jung.Even modern works by "post-Jungians" often confuse or confound these two.The Anima/animus is particularly prone to this confusion.Unfortunately, Jung added to this confusion IMHO by calling the anima soul & the animus spirit. The anima/animus use gender & projection to enable people attune to the Self, the overarching archetype (others are essentially subsets). It is the image of wholeness &, thus, the object of psychological individuation--not integration.Jung says one cannot integrate the entire unconscious--that is beyond human capability. This is more subtle than it seems--esp. regarding western mystics' unio mystica (union with God) & eastern enlightenment.Jung attempts to assist people evolve, ~the U.S. Army: "be all you can be," rather than a thin veneer of civilization--p. 269 "Outwardly people are more or less civilized, but inwardly they are still primitives."Further, p. 322 "The view that we can simply turn our back on evil & in this way eschew it belongs to the long list of antiquated naiveté's.This is sheer ostrich policy & does not affect the reality of evil in the slightest."Therefore, Jung includes the negative aspects of both archetypes & complexes. Finally, as scientific psychologist, Jung notes that p. 269 "We should never forget that in any psychological discussion we are not saying anything about the psyche, but that the psyche is always speaking about itself."

4-0 out of 5 stars Symbols, Dreams, Mandalas, The Unconscious
It's a book of essays on a theme, like most of his other books. Here's an attempt to describe the whole theory in a few paragraphs.Jung suggests the existence of a 3-layered psyche consisting of (1) the conscious (active part of the mind), (2) the personal unconscious (thinking over which we have little or no control), and (3) the collective unconscious (unevolved, animal-instinctive mental activity). The collective unconscious is "collective" in the sense that humans resemble each other the most at the lowest, biological levels."The body's carbon is simply carbon" (pg. 173).We inherit the collective unconscious from the common pool of human characteristics, like morphological aspects of the body such as arms, legs, etc.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A helpful book for both patients and professionals
"You'll just have to learn to live with it." That's what many patients hear when there is nothing else that can be medically done to alleviate their pain. But how is a patient supposed to learn to "live with it?" Where this statement leaves off, Dr. Thorn's book begins. Dr. Thorn's book illustrates how a therapist can help patients with pain to better cope with their suffering, and to go on to live fulfilling lives. This book is aptly named, for it truly does take the reader on a step-by-step journey through the therapeutic process.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thorough and compassionate
I really enjoyed this book, I found it thorough and empathic. The reader is lead through the many stages of childhood with compassion and given helpful exercises to overcome issues and obstacles present at each stage. The ability to understand the child is well presented by the author. As with psychotherapy generally it is more helpful to work with a therapist, this book is a great beginner or would work well alongside psychotherapy sessions.

1-0 out of 5 stars The Inner Child Workbook
I did not find this book to be a helpful resource for my clients who have had difficult or painful childhood experiences. In many cases the exercises in this book require a greater degree of affect tolerance than the client has at her disposal. The consequence for the reader using this strictly as a self-help book, easily could be emotional overwhelm, and reinforcement of poor self-esteem as the reader continues to wonder what is wrong with her; this time because she cannot accomplish the tasks outlined in this workbook.

5-0 out of 5 stars RELEASE THE ENERGIES THAT HOLD YOU IN LIMBO
There's a difference of talking of what your traumas (no matter how significant)are, and actually releasing the feelings and energies that accompany them.If you're really ready to get your life going and become a whole person, this book will do it.Once you've looked at the inner feelings and dealt with them, you're on your way to whatever you want of yourself.Talk about opening doors. You're worth it. ...
