1-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful to learn about attachment
This was one of many books I have been reading regarding attachment. This book had my sons name written all over it.I am a mother of a foreign adopted son with many issues ahead. This has by far been the best one I have found. It showed examples of problems along with a recommended solution to correcting the behavior. We are now seeing some much needed changes in our household.I highly recommend this selection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!
Daniel Hughes really understands children with RAD! I especially would recommend this book for parents adopting or doing foster care.

5-0 out of 5 stars highly recommend
We recently adopted a 9 yr old boy. This book helped me understand the source of his behavior and have more compassion. There weren't a lot of methods to help me cope, but I hope his other book will have that.

5-0 out of 5 stars A meeting with a remarkable mind
I first discovered Marie-Louise Von Franz in her collaboration with Emma Jung in their extraordinary book "The Grail Legend", which is by far the most intellectually coherent book I have ever encountered regarding that material, in which they place those strange and surreal stories in the framework of a Jungian perspective on the history of consciousness. In these lectures on alchemical symbolism, Von Franz applies many of the same Jungian techniques to explore some important alchemical texts.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great overview
Excellent overview of IPT from "the source", that is experts involved in its development and research. I decided to buy this book because I needed an introduction to IPT. It discusses in a clear manner the theoretical underpinnings of IPT, and the strategies and techniques used in IPT; the chapters are peppered with case histories and useful questions to ask and interventions to make with patients from an IPT perspective. I give it 4 stars rather than 5 because I think it may try to be all things to all people, blending too much of the elementary and esoteric.I think this book is meant for clinicians, and I don't think a lay person would be much drawn to it; as such I think some of the introductory information on depression (criteria for diagnosis etc.) is too elementary for your typical, even neophyte, clinician. The chapter on research data supporting IPT is rather esoteric; I liked this chapter, but this esoterica doesn't fit with the elementary aspect I just mentioned. This is a minor critique in what is otherwise a very good book for an introduction to IPT. I recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review-Comprehensive Guide to Interpersonal Psychotherapy
Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT) is an important intervention in mood and other related disorders. This volume represents the gold standard reference for any clinician seeking to learn or consolidate their practice of IPT. Updating the original 1984 text, this comprehensive reference clearly describes the theoretical basis of IPT as well as providing a good introduction to the actual practice of IPT in day to day clinical life. The real strength of the volume however, is its scholarly and comprhensive review of previous and ongoing research in IPT and its newer applications in other disorders. This volume is a wonderful inclusion on any library bookshelf as well as being an invaluable tool for the clinician seeking a comprehensive introduction to Interpersonal Psychotherapy ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent beginning counselor text
This text has great information and good self exploration exercises.Kottler has been writing these texts for many years, and has written a text that is accessible to the beginning counseling student.I cannot recommend using this text highly enough, my students love the book (as evidenced by my NOT seeing it on our bookstore shelves as a used text after the course wraps), and it is organized for both the student and the professor. The only alteration in chapter sequencing that I make is to teach the ethics chapter early in the course rather than late in the course.

5-0 out of 5 stars Do youself a favor and read this
By the end of this book, I wanted to meet Jeffrey Kottler, have coffee with him, exchange jokes, and ask him all the bigger questions that, as a graduate student, lurk in the back of my brain. You know. Those questions like, "Can I really do this?" and "What happens if I screw up someone's emotional well-being even worse than when they came in?" 5-0 out of 5 stars Should be required for those entering the field of therapy.
This book should be required reading for students who are consideringentering into the mental health field. It is thorough, helpful andstraightfoward. Personal anecdotes from practitioners offers a nice touch. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant!
The Hakomi Method, created by Ron Kurtz, is a beautifully constructed experiential therapeutic process which incorporates the best of the last 100 or so years of psychotherapeutic study. It integrates Taoist and Buddhist Principles with Western Theory and the Body-Centered Wisdom of Alexander Lowen, John Pierrakos, Hector Prestera and others.I've been a therapist for over 16 years and the Hakomi Method has now become the main influence inmy work. Ron's five principles: Mindfulness, Non-violence,Organicity, Unity and Mind-Body Wholism, insure not only change in a person's behavioral patterns, but in their soul as well. It is creative, effective and heartfelt. It is a pleasure to practice therapy this way. I highly recommend this book for anyone in the healing professions. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Forgiveness Book on the Market
I received the Ph.D. degree in one of the most research-oriented universities in the country. Therefore, any time an author purports to have discovered a new and effective program, I tend to ask, "Has this program been scientifically tested?"Most "self-help" books are based on impressions and opinions only, not science. This book, however, is the grand exception. Forgiveness Is a Choice is based on years of research into how people forgive. The research is strong and the results also strong. I gave this book as a gift to a friend who had a very serious break up with someone years ago. After reading the book, she decided to take the risk of forgiving and reconciling with the other person from whom she was estranged for years. The book provided the necessary help to get the reconciliation process started. My friend credits this book with the success."I am sold on the power of forgiveness," she said. The reader is given systematic exercises in the forgiving process. You start with exploring the anger you have, then you turn to a decision to forgive, including a clear exposition of what forgiveness is and is not. Next, you are given cognitive/thinking tasks to aid your forgiving, followed by affective/feeling tasks. In the Discovery Phase of forgiving (the final phase of the forgiveness process), the reader learns a great deal about oneself, the other person, and relationships. The author's encouragement of the reader's journaling as a means of reflection is very useful. Although the author makes the point that forgiveness benefits the forgiver, he is clear that forgiveness itself is not at all a self-focused process. Instead, as the author notes, forgiveness is a moral process in which you reach out with compassion and understanding to the one who hurt you. This book has received much national attention. I read an article in USA Today favorably reporting on this book. I also caught the radio program, Talk of the Nation, on National Public Radio in which this book was featured. I highly recommend this thoughtful and helpful book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too simplistic for some victims & it's not for everyone
This book is an invaluable aid to those who feel forgiveness is their best way to find healing, or for those whose personal beliefs demand this, but it's too simplistic to work for every trauma victim. Some victims find the pressure to forgive their tormentors to be an additional burden, or an addition to their pain, or an insult to their suffering. Therapy must be tailored to the individual and this method just doesn't work for everyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars so encouraging

5-0 out of 5 stars The Man Behind the Curtain
If you have read "A Rational Guide to Living" and still consider it somewhat of a "self help" book (with all of the negative connotations that carries), but really want to understand REBT, then I can highly recommend this book.It makes a convincing case for the relevance of this type of therapy, offers no panacea, yet at the same time provides much insight into the methods, challenges, strengths, and shortcomings of Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy.
5-0 out of 5 stars Change Destructive Beliefs to Heal and Reclaim Happiness
Albert Ellis wrote a goldmine of a book to help people and therapists heal those who are in pain with destructive beliefs, post traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, marriage and family, jealousy, OCD, and many other difficulties that CAN be healed. It requires commitment and dedication on the part of the individual to want to heal.

4-0 out of 5 stars useful advice for many practices
Much of the advice in the book is applicable to any professional who wants to start her own practice. Not necessarily restricted to mental health workers. She offers useful tips in many mundane details of getting started and also in minimising your costs. The latter is vital, especially if you are starting a new practice of your own, and probably will have to carefully watch expenditure.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide to starting a practice
Forget the fact that the author is a psychologist. Do not let that dissuade you from purchasing this book if you are not in the mental health care field. Perhaps 98% of the information is applicable to any health care provider wanting to establish a private practice.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great on office practices and getting paid

4-0 out of 5 stars Freud is Fascinating--In a Historical Artifact-Like Way
Although many of his ideas have now been refuted and/or are seen as far-fetched, it is worth taking a look at if one is interested in reading first-hand what Freud has to say.
5-0 out of 5 stars A must read
Freud's 'Civilization and its Discontents' has stood tall as a brightly burning lamp for the better part of a century. It has helped to illuminate our 'age of extremes,' an age of genocide and perpetual war. It proves that the Enlightenment was not and will not always be a kind of 'mass deception.' As a few reviewers have already noted, one cannot consider oneself educated if one has not yet read this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining
This was a very short, yet very fun read. Freud proposes some pretty far fetched and strange concepts, yet I can see some appeal in them. I didn't agree with a lot of what he said, but I enjoyed this book greatly and it did have some good points. ... Read more
