5-0 out of 5 stars Clinical Writing At Its Best
For the practicing clinician, "Awakening The Dreamer: Clinical Journeys" is an exciting trip into the shared reality of the interpersonal field in which psychoanalytic treatment takes place, and into the critically important dissociated aspect of that field. The book is a totally engaging read, clinically alive and wonderfully erudite, drawing on the history of psychoanalysis, literature, poetry, and neuroscience. Both clinically and conceptually, it provides an indispensable frame of reference that will deepen even treatments that appear "routine," but Bromberg's perspective is most breathtakingly powerful in helping the analyst reach the many so-called difficult patients currently finding their way into our waiting rooms.

This book is a wonderful tool to use in developing groups for children and adolescents. Some of the activities are therapeutic in and of themselves, and others are useful for generating discussion on a number of topics. Innovative and easy to follow, I highly reccomend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must for any Coach - not just Practice Building Therapists!
This is a truly extraordinary book that gives the reader a guide to the profession of life coaching.
5-0 out of 5 stars Helping "Helping Professionals" Reclaim Their Passion
This a an extraordinary book that belongs on the shelves (and in the heart) of every therapist AND every coach. Frankly, I've heard Pat Williams speak, so I fully expected to like the book, but even so, I was surprised by just how good, how inspiring, practical and helpful it is. Williams and Davis do a great service for mental health workers, counselors, social workers and Psychologists by affirming the power of what "we" do, and by expanding the boundaries within which we operate. At the same time, they also provide a great reminder for coaches of what WE do, how we do it, and how powerful it is!5-0 out of 5 stars You Have to Read This Book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Very useful and well written
Very useful and understandable, practical tool and method. It is welcomed as an assett to the counseling profession

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a case examples book, not a text.
I read the criticisms from other readers and felt that they didn't understand the intention of the book. They wanted an explanation of how to do EMDR, and this is a casebook of examples not a text.If you want to understand how to do EMDR, you have to read the textbook by Dr. Shapiro that explains the procedures and protocols. If you want to actually do EMDR, you have to take the class.I did last year, and because I haven't practiced I am taking it again. It's not something you want to try on your own.
5-0 out of 5 stars a therapy that gives hope
This is a well studied and important psychological modality which appears to be little known to the lay population. This book is clear and easily read. It will give hope to everyone who is at a juncture in their life. EMDR will certainly help with taking the next step towards self-actualization. ... Read more

This book seems an afterthought to the self-help book, and a very poorly written and edited one at that.5-0 out of 5 stars Essential companion to workbook
What makes this book so useful is that it assists the therapist in effectively guiding the client as s/he follows the workbook in dealing with his/her mood disorder. It shows how best to employ the workbook in therapy, help the client set goals, and individualize the exercises. It demonstrates its application not only to individuals but also to groups, brief therapy, and inpatient settings. Under each situational category, it provides a session by session description of the book's integration with therapy. What many therapists may find a boon are sample client-therapist dialogues, tips on engaging clients and maintaining collaboration, troubleshooting guides, and assignment reminders. Because of its flexibility, this cognitive program can be tailored to a range of diagnoses. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Treatment Resource Manual
I have founds both the Assessment and Treatment Manual equally helpful for new and experienced SLP's.As for the review titled "Speech therapy does not work," it is clear that we have a irrational person that cannot see beyond his/her personal experience to see how invaluable SLP's are.We are trained to service many different ages and disorders.Effectiveness of a whole profession should never be evaluated out of anger from an individual experience. However, it is evident that certain support groups are trying to program families into this belief, which is very unfortunate and unproductive(especially for the person their trying to advocate for)!Speech LanguagePathologist are helping their clients daily in the rehabilitation and remediation of skills to help them regain or acquire skills that enable them to function in society. Along with cognitive rehabilitation and speech and language intervention, we also provide dsyphagia therapy (feeding therapy) which certainly helps a client to begin/regain the ability to tolerate certain types of food/textures. This is done to ultimately avoid aspiration pnuemonia, which could be fatal if not treated. This technique strenghthens muscles that assist in eating and articulating. As you can see, our profession is extrememly important.Unfortunately we are not "miracle workers" and can only rehab and treat to the client's ability.A team of advocates, lawyers, or irate family members cannot change this in a person. It is what it is.Maybe the anger should be redirected positively to the person who really needs it, and acceptance should begin. Just then, maybe "real" progress may be observed. SLP's are not rewarded by high salaries, but work and worry about our clients endlessly. Our therapuetic techniques evolve as research does. Keeping an open mind helps people to improve professionally, as well as personally.

5-0 out of 5 stars good resource
This is an excellent resource with descriptions, ideas, examples, helpful hints and age appropirate goals. Not only do you get sample activies but they are very detailed too. They also list additional resources.OH! and example profiles... you can see if one of your students has similar attributes. They have therapy for children, adolescents and adults... what more can you ask for. 5-0 out of 5 stars Living in the Borderland. Jerome S. Bernstein
This is an important work, both in a psychological and cultural sense. Bernstein is writing about "Borderland" personalities and environmental illness but these two issues also relate to a sea change going on below the surface of the Western psyche. Bernstein is one of a very small number of people who is trying to track this sea change -- pointing us to its possibilities and its potential dangers. Living in the Borderland is a big picture book that dares to ask the really important cultural questions of our day.

5-0 out of 5 stars Livng in the Borderland.Jerome S. Bernstein

5-0 out of 5 stars Seminal Work
In this seminal work, Jerome Bernstein presents a highly literate account of the development of the Western ego and chronicles for the first time the stories of those individuals who are experiencing an evolutionary shift of consciousness that manifests itself in many ways, but particularly in receptivity to what he calls transrational reality and sensitivity to all things animate and, to the Western mind, inanimate. He establishes a link between this emerging consciousness and sensitivity to environmental toxins, capturing in graceful and compassionate language both the desperation of those who suffer from environmental illness and the frustration of those who valiantly seek ways to treat them.He differentiates strongly between those who live in the borderland and those who suffer from borderline personality disorder, suggesting therapeutic approaches based on clinical experience. He argues passionately for a new paradigm for the healing of trauma through a reconnecting of the Western medical model with a body-mind-spirit approach, most notably that of the Navajo medical model.

I have a thriving passion for experiential work, and Violet shows how it is applicable to child treatment.Dr. Oaklander has a deep respect for and understanding of children. She knows how to use their imaginations (and her own) to help them both heal and develop internal resources. I have included her ideas in my own therapeutic work with children/teens, and also in training clinicians. This is my favorite child therapy book. Her new book is due out in December 2006.

This is a wonderful book on using many techniques with children. She incorporates guided imagary and art therapy techniques. I work with children and have utilized many ideas with great success.I do wish she would write another book with even more techniques.

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic!
"Dibs" is an awesome classic every counselor and/or play therapist will love! And even if you're not in the helping field - its a GOOD read!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, at least someone did something right
Every now and then I read a book about some parents that goes and hires a specialist to do a parents job for them. This book is probably the best example I've ever read. Simply put, we've got a couple of inept, frustrated parents who obviously have no clue how to emotionally raise a child, hiring a specialist to do the work for them. The problem I have, is that play therapy is what the parents should have been doing. By ignoring the child, never playing with him, emotionally interacting, etc, the parents just let him deteoriate. This book is a classic example.
4-0 out of 5 stars Encouraging
To me, after reading the book, Dibs seems like a bright kid with parents who had no idea how to raise a child and didn't teach him any normal social skills. He just needed someone who would listen to him, give him undemanding attention, and provide a safe environment. And he got this with the therapist who wrote the book. Then he felt safe coming out of his shell and beginning to interact normally with the rest of his world. He doesn't seem autistic to me at all; he seems frustrated and afraid of doing things wrong.I liked the book.I found that the therapist continually echoing people was a little irritating after a while, but that was her technique, and seemed to work well.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, Unimaginative & Lacking In Detail
Buyer Beware: The detailed packaging of this deck is misleading and not at all representative of the lackluster cards contained within.I am an avid Reader and Collector of Tarot Cards, and I also have a degree in Psychology - so I was looking forward to this deck. I had hoped this deck would combine some interesting Jungian symbolism with the ancient Tarot mysticism. But it falls very short in this regard. There is truly almost NO symbolism in the deck...much of the Rider Waite type symbology has been removed, and it has not been replaced with anything of a new, unique or remotely "psychological" nature. Indeed, many of the "characters" sit alone on stark backgrounds of sky or water with NO surrounding symbolism at all. The Page, Knight, Queen & King in each suit looks like the exact same person in different clothing. Most disappointing, however, is the totally unimaginative Minor Arcana - which is just a "pip" deck of numbered swords, cups, wands and pentacles with absolutely NO SURROUNDING SYMBOLISM, other than sky or water. I find this type of "lazy" deck to be very boring & less than stimulating for the average Querant. I agree fully with the previous reviewer, who considered this purchase a "waste of money."While selecting a Tarot Deck is a very personal matter, UNLESS you prefer a totally "minimalist" deck with muted colors, repetitive imagery and little symbolism, this deck is probably not for you.

1-0 out of 5 stars Missing the point
This book the Author and the cards are entirely missing the point.
5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent qabalistic deck with an eastern twist!
I really enjoy the symbolism of this deck. Robert Wang provides a unique interpretation of the entire deck. Each Major Arcana has a unique chakra incorporated in it. Chakras are visual tools for meditation, most popular in Eastern philosophy, that were used by Jung. The cards are simple compared to the symbolism of other decks (ex- Thoth). I have to disagree with Deb28 when she says the Minor Arcana are "so unimaginatively rendered." There are very simple, uniform symbols for each suit but there is also a sphere on each card representing the sepirah in the corresponding color scale that the card represents. The colors and symbolism is subtle, but with a good knowledge of qabalah and/or tarot, this deck can be very powerful. It works well for readings, study, or meditation. This is a great deck but I wouldn't recommend it for beginners. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Acceptance and Commitment Therapy:An Experiential Approach to Behaviour Change
A really good overview and also in depth approach to a new therapy that could well be the next CBT - easy to read and with some very clear examples and analogies. I recommend it to anyone that has found that CBT has some gaps in regards to recurrance and behaviour change.

5-0 out of 5 stars Challenging Current Thinking in Clinical Psychology
Hayes and colleagues have made an excellent contribution with their book Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) by drawing together many years of theoretical work and practice into a very readable work. The first half ofthe book outlines the theoretical foundations of ACT. Many recent books inclinical psychology claim to offer a new psychotherapeutic technique or anew approach within a particular conceptual framework. In contrast, Hayesand colleagues present a new and comprehensive conceptual foundation forpsychotherapy. They seek to challenge some of the cherished notions inmental health (e.g., that mental disorders always arise from abnormality)and critique some of the central ideas in many popular therapies (e.g., theidea in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy that mental health will be improved bychanging the content of one's thoughts). Their argument identifies languageand our use of it as both one of the key reasons for humanity's success andour inability to rid ourselves of many mental health issues. For areflective practitioner or academic, the arguments presented will give thereader much food for thought.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A Social Constructionist Mediation Book
John Winslade and Gerald Monk are two social constructionists out of New Zealand who, according to their own jacket flap, are "leading figures" in the narrative therapy movement.Their's is an interesting book with an interesting thesis: instead of seeing mediation as a problem-solving process where competing interests are resolved, they see it as a process where competing "stories" (or narratives) of the conflict are "deconstructed" and an alternate story is reconstructed. That alternate story is fashioned in large part outof a recognition of the culturally-influenced power relationships between the dispuiting parties, and with awareness of the cultural biases of the mediator as well. This theory specifically acknowledges one of the real weaknesses with conventional mediation, which is that mediators often struggle to maintain the detached neutrality that is expected of them. The narrative approach also seeks to recalibtate the relationship between the disputants instead of simply solving a particular problem.
5-0 out of 5 stars An Interesting Approach
This book is a good read for anyone interested in the theory of mediation and why it works. I find the premise of this book to be somewhat over-complicated. Narrative mediation starts from the idea that everyone has their own "story", which positions people in different places which inevitably produce different agendas and therefore conflicts. The authors differentiate this from the traditional view that what gets people into conflicts is that they want something which is an expression of the inner needs or interest. As an experienced mediator, I find the authors' proposed methods of allowing the parties to tell their own storiesnot necessarily in conflict with the traditional view, as it seems to be an outgrowth of the need to allow the parties to "vent" their point of view, while at the same time encouraging them to listen to each other. However, while I agree that the parties "stories" do place them in different places, I do not agree that the fact that they have different stories necessarily leads to conflict. One cannot discount the existence ofan underlying reason for the conflict, apart from the parties' "stories."This is where I part company with the authors.Even so, the book is very helpful for an understanding of the mediation process. For a good "nuts and bolts" book,I also recommend Basic Skills for the New Mediator by Allan H. Goodman, even if you are an experienced mediator.

5-0 out of 5 stars Settlement Through Alternative Stories
In one of the finest general mediation books I have ever read, Winslade and Monk present a new perspective on the mediation of disputes. In a departure from the more structured models of mediation presented in the past, these authors introduce a revolutionary approach to the manner in which mediation is approached.Read more
