1-0 out of 5 stars Statistics for indoctrination
For academic philosophers of science sociology is not a paradigm of successful science. Earlier Bohrnstedt had enforced his ersatz philosophy of social science as editor of the journal Sociological Methods and Research. Now in this book, Statistics for Social Data Analysis, Bohrnstedt, Knoke and Mee attempt to indoctrinate students in this same ersatz philosophy of science.
4-0 out of 5 stars For students of social sciences
This book is a statistics textbook for students of social sciences, not high-end users. I read earlier edition of this book in undergraduate statistics course. In that course, only basics of statistics were instructed. In social sciences, they don't need to know A to Z of statistics for all they have to know is what the function of SPSS or SAS means and what kind of data is needed and how the data would be analyzed in the statistics packages. There is no need to derive the functions in the textbook mathematically as they do in the courses of statistics department. We should understand what the function means, not how it is derived. This book is written in this regard. Unlike orthodox statistics textbook, this book tackles only the meaning of the statistical methods. In doing so, this book illustrates the methods with various field works and SPSS exercises. This is the stance most textbook written for social scientists takes. It seems that this book succeed in achieving the goal. Explanations are succinct and examples are apposite. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Get this while studying for licensure!
I purchased this book while studying for my national and state licensing exams. As many other reviewers have noted, this is an excellent resource. Reading this book in between session provided me with a healthy break from the rigours of studying, while orienting me to thinking about the procedures and forms I needed to be developing for my practice once licensed. There is a wealth of information that could be a bit overwhelming as you are glowing over your new shiny license number and wondering what you need to do to get your clients into your practice. Using the strategy of tackling a form a day was also very helpful for me. This book will go a long way to helping you create a sound set of ethical and effective business practices that was probably not covered at all in your graduate training.

Perfect condition; new book; great packaging and arrived on time. This book cost less than paying my school's book store for it and it was deliever-free!

5-0 out of 5 stars This is THE Book for aspiring play therapists!
I was required to read the book for a class I was completing on Play therapy. It was a very easy read, well organized with a good mixture of research and anecdotal information. What makes the book a truly outstanding resource is Dr. Landreth's very candid insight into the practice of play therapy as well as his willingness to share with the reader his very sincere love and respect for children.

4-0 out of 5 stars Clear, concise, engaging introduction to play therapy

5-0 out of 5 stars Bedrock Concepts for the Millennial Therapist
Beck's and Freeman's marriage of value and belief systems to personality theory was nothing less than a watershed back in 1990. Kernberg, Millon, Hare, Linehan, Shapiro and other personality theorists of the period were already moving in the direction of what became Millon's "personality-guided synergistic therapy." But this book gave substance to what has become the dominant set of front-line therapeutic tools in use at this time.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic
This is a great book. For example, the chapters on obsessive compulsive and passive agressive personality give some great direction for therapy.Knowing that an obsessive person fears making mistakes, that narcissism is part of obsessionality and that a passive agressive person fears loss of autonomy can really guide treatment well.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very practical, directive strategy
Beck has done a great job describing a very pragmatic, common sense cognitive-behavioral methodology for the treatment of challenging personalities. The research he has done builds confidence in practitioners interested in and using these methods. Each personality style is well-described, and several strategies are provided for addressing these problematic dispositions. The book is very well-organized and easy to read. Assignments and case examples further add to the utility of this text. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Reading
Fromm does a great job of reviewing the various "types" of Love and providing the characteristics of each. His review clarifies what purpose each kind of love serves in our lives.
3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting but inconsistent and contextually illogical
THE ART OF LOVING purports to be a manual for the heart. Reading this book evokes within me feelings of irritation & frustration rather than love. Much of the irritation comes from his incapacity for logical thinking and consistency. Perhaps he disdains logic, but this is probably a symptom of my inability to empathize with his logical blindness.
4-0 out of 5 stars useful and informative
I find Mr. Fromm's book The Art of Loving to be very helpful and informative in understanding how our love relationships work. After attaining the knowledge of how love, attraction and relationships function and after personally experiencing these phenomena, he reminds us that the most important factor in any art is being in the moment and allowing one's intuition to lead."Working On Your Relationship Doesn't Work" by Ariel and Shya Kane is also a great practical handbook for living in the moment and using awareness and intuition as tools in creating love in all aspects of life.I highly recommend their book as a follow up to The Art of Love! ... This is a really good book... 4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Primer
This book is an excellent primer for a family therapist, and is written as such. The text does not assume that the reader knows anything. It is a good introduction to family therapy for those who go above and beyond family counseling. As a mental health counseling grad student, I noticed that the text stays within its scope of family therapyt and does not stray from a this model.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for all beginning therapists!
This book will take you step-by-step through the process of doing psychotherapy from beginning to end. It is very user-friendly, basic and real. Out of my 8 textbooks this semester to read, this is the one that gets read first because of the valuable information it offers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well written and interesting therapeutic model.
Richard Schwartz clearly explains his therapeutic model of working with sub-personalities (parts) in a way that empowers the client to lead their lives from their Self instead of having one or more of their 'parts' run the show!Although I have intuitively been working this way in a gestalt framework, his model gives many guidelines to make this process smoother and avoid pitfalls in this type of work.An excellent guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars A "must have" book for those entering the counseling field.
Through personal application of the therapies described in this book, I found it to be profoundly enlightening. It shed bright lights on the origins of my own thoughts and self-talk. Experiencing the benefits of the therapies, seeing that they work, it provided the best form of teaching to me as to how it can be a valuable resource for helping one's self and for helping others. Having specialized in pastoral counseling while earning my Masters of Divinity degree, this book has done more to help me understand the multiple (and valuable) personalities all persons develop from childhood to adulthood and then how to use these therapies in a counseling setting. Its methods provide such a positive way of looking at ourselves, at other individuals, and at family dynamics. The concept of internal family systems therapy makes so much sense that I hope more therapists and counselors discover it, utilize it, and recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book with permanently change your view of psychotherapy
Internal Family Systems Therapy by Richard C. Schwartz represents the author's attempt at documenting a fascinating journey into the inner lives of clients. His model uniquely applies systems thinking to internalprocess, seeing our inner lives as yet another level of human systems. As Iread this book, I was taken aback by how psychodynamics suddenly becamecoherent to me in a way that made intuitive and intellectual sense. Schwartz takes the reader through the development of the IFS model, anddemonstrates how the therapy emerged from his interactions with hisclients. He is successful in describing the step-by-step process of IFStherapy that is tied directly to the theory.Read more

This book is an excellent reference for any parent with children having ADHD. It covers so much information, and provides actual ideas and behavior modification plans to start on immediately. Going through the exercises is also very helpful in helping parents understand more clearly the difficulties they are experiencing with their children, and what behaviors they should try to eliminate, which need to be ignored, etc. The book was fairly objective in regards to providing the different treatment options available for ADHD. It should be read by parents of children both on and/or off medication, so that a good solid behavior modification plan get get into place. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A magnificent volume
In this volume, Professor Bandura situates the self-efficacy construct within a theory of personal and collective agency that operates in concert with other sociocognitive factors in regulating human well-being and attainment. Bandura also addresses the major facets of agency - the nature and structure of self-efficacy beliefs, their origins and effects, the processes through which such self-beliefs operate, and the modes by which they can be created and strengthened. In addition, Bandura reviews a vast body of research on each of these aspects of agency in diverse applications of the theory. Must-reading for everyone interested in psychology and, specifically, self-efficacy beliefs.

5-0 out of 5 stars A significant contribution to the field of psychology.
Albert Bandura explores the self-system throughout lifespan. Self-regulation and perceived self-efficacy help people to adjust to realities of each life's stage, from early childhood till aging and preparation to death.5-0 out of 5 stars Bandura 's Self-Efficacy Helps Understand Human Nature
Dr. Bandura has written an excellent book for scholars, researchers, as well as the casual observer of human nature and behavior. It is comprehensive and well documented. 4-0 out of 5 stars Brainy and well worth it
This is a scholarly collection of essays from leading theorists in the field of attachment and neurobiology. It provides an exciting, in-depth overview from various perspectives from the inner workings of the brain, to the development of the social mind, to what it all mean for clinicians. There is both theory and practical advice. The last several chapters are particularly relevant to psychotherapists in the field working with individuals with trauma. The down side of the book is that some of the early chapters are somewhat rhedundant and heady, necessarily so in the science presented, but definately overlapping. However, I'd strongly recommend it for all clinicians wanting to stay abreast of the exciting developments in this area. I use it in supervision groups I lead for therapists, for example.

The theoretical underpinnings are presented in a way that does not detract from the aim of the book to help one learn how this work is done. There are lots of clear examples and explanations that give one the feeling they are ready to apply what they have learned in their next session.Written in a clear style free of jargon.

Good overview of the relationship between attachment and emotional functioning in marriage. The manualized treatment approach has been empirically supported so deserves more than just a glance. An excellent addition to the libraries of anyone interested in and encountering the challenges of couples counseling.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent guide for practitioners
