4-0 out of 5 stars Good for the technical information
This book is good in reviewing the technical aspects of creating treatment plans and developing diagnoses. For a book about the art of listening in psychotherapy, read Inside Therapy, for which Irvin Yalom contributes aforeword and discusses the concept of creating "a new therapy for eachpatient."

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful and practical.
I found this book very helpful. It is clear andconcise. It offerspractical interventions along with short term and long term treatmentplans. I wish it were available in the Spanish language.

4-0 out of 5 stars The book is OK
If you want basic cognitive techniques, this is a good little book. But these ways of thinking are difficult to have a big effect unless you complement it with cognitive group therapy for this disorder. My major problem with the book is it's total lack of information conserning the subconscious, since the automatic fear responses arise from that part of us. In my view, results will be better when the person combines cognitive self-help/group therapy with fitting visualization techniques. Willpower is always important, but mental imagery training helps the irrational aspects to be more easily tackled by the rational mind. A lot of intelligent people having this disorder is proof that it can be difficult to just "think it away". The negativeprogramming behind sosial anxiety lies deep in the psyche. But it's not what's going on outside the person that's a problem, it's the filter called perception, the way the person thinks about what's going on outside him, that's causing the fear. Reality and real life is mostly what happens inside of all of us. Social anxiety is a type of filter giving the person overlearned/irrational responses, like it's a push of a button. The person is not the disorder. The person is not this filter. It needs to be reprogrammed. This can be done. Rapee's book gives you part of the recipe. Personally I would recommend "Psycho-Cybernetics" by Maxwell Maltz, "The Power of Your Subconscious Mind: One of the Most Powerful Self-Help Guides Ever Written" by Joseph Murphy, and "Change Your Life in Seven Days" by Paul McKenna (currently available at Amazon.co.uk). These books give a broader understanding of how the mind works and how it can be changed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book to overcome social anxiety
I've never left a review for a book, but after reading this really helpful book I am in debt with Mr. Rapee. This is an easy to read book, short (116 p), that goes straight to the point. I've read 5 books on social anxiety and I can say that this is the most practical one, with tips that you can start applying immediately. There are cognitive suggestions to overcome your fears, issues about exposure (what he calls reality testing), and tips about improving your social skills. But remember that this book alone won't cure you: In my case, medication, group therapy, and aerobic exercise (yoga too) are other weapons I'm using to fight sad and anxiety. Good luck.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Lifesaver!!
My therapist assigned this book when I sought treatment for SA/SP.It was exactly what I needed to get me off the couch and back out into society.Rapee's book offers a plan that's simple and easy to follow, regardless of your educational background.Other reviewers chide the writing as 'low brow' and 'junior high grade level', but they have to remember that SA/SP isn't limited to College Graduates. This book is MUST whether your in therapy or simply looking for a self-help option for SA/SP. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Rewarding
Yes, the text is dense, but it is no more so than the tradition the author is working within.Edelman's use of Zizek to critique the dominant ideology of futurity / the symbolic child expands and redirects queer theory. The book is written for specialists. If you're interested in the field but are struggling with the text, first read Zizek's "The Sublime Object of Ideology."
3-0 out of 5 stars Important, but...
Lee Edleman's book poses important questions for all of us about "queerness" and resistance to our presumedly "normal" cultural investments in a redemptive future figured most vividly in the notion of the "child."I admire the work being done here, and in particular the intellectual chutzpah it takes to dismantle this dominant ideological framework while taking on Baudrillard, Butler and other formidable thinkers. It is, however, unfortunate that Edelman seems to have become enchanted as much by his own linguistic cleverness as by the important ideas he sets out to explore.

5-0 out of 5 stars A new model for family therapy
There have been many, perhaps far too many, books which try to use chaos & complexity theory as a model for therapy. Most such books have only the most limited understanding of either chaos/complexity theory ortherapy. This book stands out because the authors are both workingtherapists and experts in non-linear dynamics. And perhaps mostimportantly, they know how to write in a way that is useful to therapists,as well as to anyone who wants to think deeply about how human beings growand change. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, with one major concern
Treating Sexual Disorders is an excellent, multi-authored work.It describes sex and couples therapy in a comprehensive manner that will be especially useful to the beginning sex therapist.I have one major concern, however, and that is the last chapter (treating paraphilia). The psychodynamic orientation of the author makes him regard paraphilia as inherently pathological, and not just as a result of learning history that gives us all different "turn ons."Charlton speaks, for example, on page 309 of how "working closely with the paphiliacs involves a confrontation with the nature of evil" and later mentions the "evil inherent in perverse sexuality."To be fair, perhaps he was only referring to victimizing or to the DSM IV caveat that the behavior has to cause upset to the person engaging in it or to a victim. The tone of the entire chapter, however, seems to pathologize paraphilia more than the literature supports. In my own practice (I am a licensed psychologist), I see many clients who have been told that any form of unusual sexuality makes them evil or dirty. They don't need any more help to feel that way.More could have been written regarding mutually consensual play between couples that is just a little (or a lot) "kinky" without the heavy judgement. This chapter aside, there is a great deal of value in this volume.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This awesome piece of writing is one of the most detailed theses on the treatment of sexual disorders that i have ever read. Starting with minor disorders and working its way up to the real serious ones, he book has plenty of detail that you'll not miss at all. Great book, but found out that "Natural Penis Enlargement: New methods of avoiding and curing impotence, premature ejaculation, and erectile dysfunction safely and inexpensively. NEW Secrets that your doctor won't tell you, No Pumps, No Pills and No Gadgets!" by Platinum Millennium is much better and more interesting to read

5-0 out of 5 stars Educational, useful and well written
As a therapist who sees patients with sexual problems I found this book extremely helpful. The various chapters gave me the tools I needed to understand sexual difficulties from a psychological and physical perspective.I've even referred my patients to selected chapters of the book, and they have reported that they were able to understand the concepts without having a professional education.I would recommend this book to seasoned and novice therapists to add to their library. It addresses areas that therapists tend to avoid. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Jungian Tarot
This is a "must have" book for people studying the tarot. I am familiar with several of Robert Wang's books, and think that this is one of his best, and that his introduction to Jungian psychology is the clearest and most simple explanation of Jung's ideas that I have ever encountered. It is also a really good history of tarot that is well-documented. What he has done, essentially, is to collect similar mythological ideas under the the tarot cards to which they relate. The work not only demonstrates the similarities of most mythologies and religions but it tends to underscore Jung's assertion that the characters of these pantheons are really "archetypes" which we all share. At first I was a bit put off by the extent to which this is a very scholarly book, but I was surprised at how easily it reads, and how it really opened doors of understanding.

5-0 out of 5 stars Correction of "a reader from Orlando"
The review by Orlando presents faulty information. The Brief Adolescent Therapy Homework Planner does indeed contain homework assignments on topics focused for teenagers. Contrary to what was written by Orlando, the book contains assignments on such topics as Conduct Disorder, Chemical Dependence, Eating Disorder, Peer/Sibling Conflict, Runaway, Sexual Abuse Perpetrator, Sexual Abuse Victim, and Mania/Hypomania as well as common problems such as Depression, Anxiety, ADHD, Low Self-Esteem and Oppositional Defiant. The book does NOT contain exercises for Enuresis/Encopresis. I expect that Orlando was looking at the Brief Child Therapy Homework Planner when the review was written.

5-0 out of 5 stars A refreshing perspective on the psychotherapy process.
Dr. Levenson has managed to write an informative, helpful and entertaining book on psychotherapy. She has taken a bit of a literary risk by structuring the book around the dialogs of a student supervision group as they struggle to make sense of videotaped psychotherapy sessions, butDr. Levenson manages to pull this off.In fact, this literary device gives the book a liveliness and freshness rarely found in clinical writings. As a psychotherapist and clinical supervisor myself, I have found her concepts of immediate use in my daily work.Anyone who has worked in the field should particularly enjoy Dr. Levenson's liberating view of counter-transference as an inevitable reaction to a client's maladaptive interpersonal style - and not necessarily a signal for the therapist to run back for another decade of personal analysis.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully readable,thoughtful,humane,down-to-earth
Dr. Levenson's masterful didactic style reveals the elegance and simplicity of the time-limited dynamic model. The book provides moment-to-moment details of patient-therapist interactions and gives the reader a learning experience of remarkable immediacy.Dr. Levenson's clinical savvy and sophistication are evident on every page.Highly recommended for any clinician, regardless of orientation;you will find this highly readable, jargon-free presentation of time-limited dynamic psychotherapy an invaluable resource. 5-0 out of 5 stars Deep, Poignant, Insightful and meaningful
I tend to get attracted by a sort of synchronicity or intuitive feeling to certain books that resonate with the current process of what I call my spiritual journey. This book is one of those I would cherish and remember, and refer to, and meditate upon it. It is not only writen by someone deeply in touch with psychological understanding but also by a person inmersed consciously on her spiritual path, or inner journey towards enlightnement or liberation or full awakening of consciousness as you wish to name this subtile and many times confusing path.

5-0 out of 5 stars The most helpful child therapy book in my library
It's been 4 yrs since I read this book, and I still recommend it often to young therapists as well as to the most seasoned. One of the most skilled child clinicians I know told me that reading this book has changed the way she practices child therapy.Everyone who has read it (that I know of) has liked it and purchased their own copy after starting to read mine.It is written in a very readable fashion, which will be a delight to those who have trudged through dense clinical texts.Prior to reading this book, I used conventional board games merely as filler, and usually felt guilty about doing so.Shortly after I read this, I was able to put them to good clinical use. Highly recommended. ... Read more
