Most frustrating book ever!
I teach at addiction studies at a local university, and found this book to be redundant and frustrating. It repeats itself, as would a student who has a single thought and lots of space to fill. I find this to be the most poorly organized book I have ever taught from, and will not use it again.

Review
An excellent resource guide into motivational interviewing. A must for any therapist of addiction. It should be the number 1 tool for any educators in handling difficult situations with students.

Kudos for Miller and Rollnick

Thus far this book has been easy to read and informative, detailing the incredibly useful theories and principles of Family Therapy.
Family Therapy An (Humdrum) Overview
This text is very dry reading.As a student, I had to force myself to read by promising myself rewards every ten pages (yes! I can go get a drink! Then ten more pages and then yes! I can call my mom!) And I am interested in the subject, and love to read.The information is good, detailed, etc. but the method is dry.In comparison, my counseling theories text was easy to read, informative, and interesting, and it didn't take self positive reinforcing to get me to read the whole thing. ... One of the best you will ever read
This is an easy to read book, which managed to make profound points about life, pain, and fate.I enjoyed reading the first part of the book and learning about what it was like to be in such a hellish place (a concentration camp), and yet still being able to be positive about life.What more can I say than its an excellent book?

Useful Book
I purchased this book for a graduate level course in family therapy.I found it very helpful in explaining the important theories of family therapy.It also highlights therapeutic techniques and provides vignettes of how the theory might apply in a real life situation.I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a basic theoretical background in family therapy.

Required text book
I bought this book because it is a requirement for a graduate level class I am taking in the MSW program where I live, otherwise I don't know that I would have purchased it. However, it is full of good research information and practical applications with clients.

Excellent!
I am not educated in psychology, but I found this professional-level book easy to read and very informative.McWilliams looks at various personalities like the sociopathic, paranoid, hysterical, etc.She explains the defense mechanisms that lead to the various personality types.Although this book is written from the standpoint of pathological personality types and is intended for use by professionals and psych students, after reading this book you will have a greater understanding of personality quirks of family, friends, and co-workers.Well-written and very informative, even for the "armchair" psychologist.

Excellent read for beginning & experienced mental health clinicians
McWilliams clearly has a degree of mastery on the subject. It is quite easy to write about this topic in manner that overcomplicates the subject (as many do), but rarely do I encounter an author who is able to present the information in a highly readable, accessible & integral manner. It is appropriate for experienced and beginning therapists alike. This is a book that any clinician ought to have in their library and you will find yourself referring back to it over the years.

cells over systems
I'm a biopsychologist.Kalat is a very good writer with a gift for explaining difficult concepts and for keeping technical issues interesting.I chose his Intro Psych book for my classes for just this reason.My response to this book is a little more mixed.Biopsychology ranges broadly from cellular to systems level research.This book does well at the former level.It gets a little more deeply into the biochemistry than I would prefer but does so well and is impressively up to date.It does less well at the systems level literature.For example, it defines two common imaging terms incorrectly: PET and rCBF (mixing them up with SPECT and PET respectively).Overall, I like the book and chose it for my biopsychology class but every instructor needs to choose based on their own needs for depth and for emphasis.

as for textbooks for a biopsych class, this book is certainly interesting and the enhanced cd is definitely a plus.this book has not yet been used as a pillow for a sudden study break nap.the pictures are clear, the writing is friendly, and it's too bad that more texts can't be like this!

Complete Adult Psychotherapy Treatment Planner
This book is interesting, but it is far too "testbooky" and would benefit from being more focused on specific "how to" examples of treatment plans as do many other similar efforts.The text makes interesting reading, but, it didn't provide the concrete examples I expected.

Another great tool for the practioner's tool box.
Research suggests that an ever increasing number of practioners are relying on tools such as this to help formulate treatment plans. Thank You.

These 'planners' are a great place to start when designing a treatment plan. They are the equivalent of a 'manual' that refreshes memory, assists with language and format- and gets you past the block. Its weaknesses lie in its treatment methods and assessment paradigm.Read more

The Neuroscience of Psychotherapy

Excellent Review and Exploration
Cozolino's text presents a very complicated topic in an extremely accessible manner, owing to a straightforward writing style and a penchant for perfectly applicable example case studies. He breaks down the functioning of the brain into "digestible" chunks and builds throughout the text on earlier learning. If you work in the field of counseling or psychotherapy, you simply cannot go wrong by reading this book and supplementing your knowledge of neuroscience-psychotherapy connection.

This book is simply a masterpiece in presenting neuroscience relevant to the both researchers in braod areas of psychological science and therapists.The presentation of brain specific information is assured, clear and reasonably well referenced.The book always connects brain regions with manifested behaviours and psychological symptoms.There is so much clarity in the text that it really deserves a very wide audience way beyond what its title suggests.The book embraces aspects of affective and evolutionary neuroscience, ties them to human consciousness development and identifies specific brain developments that cause us to be who we are.The piece of the development of the parietal lobes is one of the best I have ever read.The author has a gift for communication, and this is so rare in neuroscience books that the stands proud of the rest.The tripartite brian, psychology and psycotherapeutic connections are presented with out propagandising one at the expense of the other.There is a degree of good quality speculation in the book from time to time which could set its own research agenda.I will conclude by saying that do give a longer review would runs the risk of spoiling the lively and surprising erudition of the author.Definitely a book worth reading, worth keeping and certainly if you loan it out, you may have trouble getting it back. ... surface but instructive
I had great hopes for this book. After I glanced at it, I purchased it immediately. It certainly does reorient you to the distinctions between goals, objectives and diagnoses, but after using it for a while, it just wasn't sufficient for those more complicated kids. I'll keep referring to it, not so much for information but to place me back on course when I'm stuck and blocked- (happens more than I'd like, when the stress gets to me,) yet I still would suggest, for more seasoned professionals, a higher level of diagnostic and prescriptive content. A great aid for clinicains.
If you work with adolescent this is a great aid to writing treatment plans for a beginner or a skilled clinician. It makes following this state regulations a lot easier.I would definitely recommend this book to all my colleagues.This book has helped me write treatment plans quicker and easier then I ever thought possible.I love this series of books.

A godsend for the busy clinician
I work in a mental health agency as an intake clinician, interviewing families and children and writing assessments to be used for case disposition and treatment planning.I see 4-6 families weekly and my work load has been eased enormously with this addition to my library.It sits right next to my DSM-IV and I use it daily.The language for long term goals and therapeutic interventions are clinically sound and there are a number of options in each to tailor for specific cases. ... Promising intervention but reservations from an EMDR client
EMDR may be an excellent form of overcoming trauma, and the research tends to suggest it does, although if you read the literature in a disinterested way, you will find there are many mixed reports on study results. Some find EMDR equal to or better than Cog/Beh Therapy intervention; some find it better; some find it not as effective. As someone who has conducted experimental research AND has undergone EMDR for trauma, I wish to point out several issues that should be addressed, even for true believers.First, EMDR is a perfect intervention for a technological age: after all, don't all our life's problems supposedly have a technological solution. Our culture says so, but of course, history tells us otherwise.Spiritual meaning, social integration, a personal credo, culture and religion still appear to be the ingredients that hold us together..or as Paul Tillich says, "Our ground of being."Technology may be helpful but it is ultimately ancillary.Of course, those who suffer from trauma may require immediate relief, and if EMDR can reduce suffering efficiently and quickly, that's fine.I had about 10 EMDR sessions and they helped me immensely.HOWEVER, that being said, one must look a bit further.First, one must consider the individual client him/herself.EMDR helps us return to a traumatic event, see it more objectively, and hopefully allows us to use our reasoning faculties which may not have been in play during such events owing to stress, shock, immaturity, ignorance, and so forth.However, I believe we all have varied levels of experiencing or "reliving" memory. Some can visualize quite easily and can "see" the experience as vividly, even more vividly than the true life one. In keeping with Gardner's idea of "multiple intelligences," we should consider that different individuals have different "intelligences" in reconstructing or reliving events. Furthermore, we should consider that individuals have varying degrees in their ability to make associations.While a trauma may be a single event or several similar events, in all likelihood they have developed as narrative themes that compose the self-concept the client has.The better a client can connect the trauma to such themes, the more holistic the effect. A good EMDR clinician can encourage this reconstruction, but one should be aware that we have different cognitive styles.

Easy to read and helpful for understanding the process of EMDR.I would have to agree with the previous reviewer Laura M that PEACEFUL HEART : A Woman's Journey to Healing is a must-read.Aimee Jo Martin's story clearly illustrates and details her journey with successful EMDR treatments.Quite powerful if you want to really see how effective EMDR can be.
