5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Description of Experiments
If you are looking for a general overview of the concept of synesthesia, I would not recommend this book. This book is instead for the serious student or professional who is interested in the field of synesthesia and what research is being done to define and document it. The book primarily consists of highly detailed descriptions the various experiments done on synesthetes (people who experience synesthesia) and the outcomes of those experiments.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Start
I'm still making my way through this book, but what I've seen so far has offered an interesting explanation of the mood disorders. To be sure, mood disorders are not entirely determined by genes - there are environmental factors to be considered as well, as twin studies have shown. However, suggestions that there are genes which can predispose individuals to mood and thought disorders is compelling; this explanation can provide an answer for many questions that pure environmental accounts cannot. It makes for a worthwhile read.1-0 out of 5 stars How about some real evidence?
This is another in the long line of books and articles claiming that mental illnesses are largely genetic. This claim is made despite the fact that not a single gene has been found to be linked to a mental disorder (at least not one that wasn't refuted a few years later).I guess the idea is to put out a bunch of studies making claims and, by the time the studies are refuted, you can crank out some new ones.My favorite passage in this book goes as follows: "Recent linkage analysis studies have replicated initial reports of positivelinkage to chromosome 6 markers in families with schizophrenia.Although there are several negative studies, the evidenceimplicating the short arm of chromosome 6 is the strongest to date for schizophrenia.""Several negative studies"? That sounds quite uncompelling to me.If you are going to assert that mental illnesses are genetic and human beings can be reduced to genetic robots...

5-0 out of 5 stars Detailed, scholarly, but fully accessible for lay readers .
Students, clinicians and researchers who study the genetic roots of mental disease will find this an involving overview which provides a comprehensive introduction to psychiatric genetics. From the contributions of genes andenvironment to mental health to genetic predispositions and transmissionlinks, Genetics of Mental Disorders offers chapters which sound detailedand involved, but which can be absorbed by lay readers. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars House built on sand
The arguments presented are based on weak theories and opinions. Authors say we have 4 basic drives (drive to aquire, bond, learn, and defend) and we "naturally" become cooperative to ensure our own self-interests (reminiscent of Adam Smith's invisible hand theory). While these drives seem reasonable, what about other drives? And how can the authors argue that cooperation is the "natural" product when we are left alone? Anyone with children will understand the importance of education in helping to "teach" cooperation.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great concept
The book lays out the concept of four human drive. To Acquire, To Bond, To Learn, and To Defend. The concept is pretty much lecture by the Franklin Covey seminars and many books as preaches by the great Stephen Covey, the author of 7 habits of highly effective people. It says 4 things drive people. To Live, To Love, To Learn and To Leave a Legacy. The fourth drive from this book and Franklin Covey is similar but not the same. Overall its a good book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Who Is In Your Driver's Seat?
At first glance this book seems to be leaning too much toward the scientific/academic side. I was actually dreading to read the book, however the authors have done a magnificant job of livening up each academic part with real world case studies. The main theme of this text is how we base our decision making on four psychological drives that every person is born with regardless of religion, race or other factors:Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This review not based on content but presentation
There's no way I can review this book based on content because I'm not very familiar with the fields, but I did appreciate how well the authors presented the theories on such a controversial theory. They did manage to shed some light on method of explaining human behavior that I never thought of and took for granted (my folly considering I'm an aspiring Sociologist). What's best is at the end of the book there are suggestions for further reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent
Highly recommended. A superb, easy-to-understand introduction to Evolutionary Psychology. A lot of drawings clearly explain the concepts.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great macro introduction to Evolutionary Psychology
This book changed my life. This book discusses information using real life scenerios which can be demonstrated in everyday life. It really spooked the "voodoo" (that which I could not explain) right out of me.And I'm a more temperate, more understanding person than I ever was before. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT FUN & yet very educational...understanding how the brain really works!
This is the second book on visual illusions by J Richard Block, the author, after his earlier book entitled 'Can You Believe Your Eyes'. Both are printed in large format. In fact, there is also a card deck which amplifies the earlier book.
5-0 out of 5 stars There's more than one way of looking at things
This book is plenty of fun.It begins with images that can be seen in two ways depending on what you regard as the background.Next are multiple figures that share contours, where the background is not the key to the ambiguity. Then we have a short chapter where you see different figures depending on whether you look at the left-hand or right-hand part of the image. After that come some rather famous images that are composed of several smaller images.

4-0 out of 5 stars Perception introduced smartly, fascinatingly.
Authors Bruce and Young introduce aspects of the science of perception with reference to works of art.The book is a delight to read, and almost as much fun to browse, because the numerous images lead the browser to puzzle over the demonstrated twists of perception. The authors take appropriate, detailed steps in explaining the physical and psychological path of seeing. Additionally, they show us the importance of totally contemporary, computer tools used in the exploration of human perception.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Decent
This is a decent book on dreaming. It answered many of the questions that I might have raised about the subject. It does so in an informed and easy-to-read manner. It is not stuffed with references (both pro and con). Much of the medical science is filtered so that the person-on-the-street will understand it. Many sidebars answer some basic questions. The headings are brief and accurate, making it easy to skim and find answers to questions. Overall, a worthwhile reading. Recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars What Dreams Mean, Scientifically
Everyone is interested in dreams. If you are lucky enough to remember one, it will be something you think about upon awakening and perhaps through the day.Dreams are strange, frightening, and funny enough that it isn't at all uncommon to tell a friend, "Guess what I dreamt last night?" if there is a peculiar dream that bears relating. Most of us are convinced that dreams mean something. It used to be thought that gods communicated their intentions to us via dreams.Other people insisted that dreams could predict the future, and there were dream books in which you could look up the subject of your dream, say "cat," and find that dreaming of a cat was a certain prediction for maybe riches or maybe love.Freud's thoughts about dreams were close to this sort of thinking; the content of a dream had hidden meanings that were available for interpretations. But everyone who looked to dream content for meaning was looking in the wrong place, according to J. Allan Hobson in _Dreaming: An Introduction to the Science of Sleep_ (Oxford). Not the content of dreams, but the form involved and the neurological basis for it are where the meanings of dreams lie.5-0 out of 5 stars The Neuroscience of Dreaming
If one is looking for a book that is a cookbook for the interpretation of dreams or a guide to the collective conscious of dreams, then keep on searching. However, if you are seeking an introduction to the science of dreams, the underlying physiological and chemical basis of dreaming, then look no further.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction that holds the attention
This was the first book on evolutionary psychology I read, and it was an easy-to-understand and engaging introduction that gave me the background I needed to tackle more difficult works such as _The Adapted Mind_. Badcock explains the history of the movement well, treats most issues with healthy skepticism, and explains natural selection in such a way that most readers, even those without preexisting knowledge of evolution, should find quite easy to understand.Read more
