1-0 out of 5 stars FULL OF OUTDATED & WRONG INFO -DON"T BUY!
As a parent of a child with Tourette's, I feel I must warn anyone trying to learn about TS to ABSOLUTELY NOT buy this horrifying book.It is full of completely outdated and flat out wrong information that has long since been dismissed by current clinical studies. Please skip it and go read Brad Cohen's book

4-0 out of 5 stars Editor@Tourettes-Disorder.com - Review
This book is a great book for the patient diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome at the secondary and tertiary level of the disorder; or a person in a personal relationship with the same patient. They will understand and relate much more throughout the pages without a "Scare Factor".There are possible more sever co-morbid conditions the Dr. amplifies in the secondary and tertiary diagnosis which are not so prevalent in a first level diagnosis if at all.
1-0 out of 5 stars Caution, a terrifying book for those new to the syndrome
This unfortunately was the first book I read on the subject of Tourette Syndrome. My child was then 4 years old and newly diagnosed with the condition, and an absolute angel, sweetheart, mild-mannered, sociable pre-schooler with tics. I needed therapy after reading this book for fear of all the horrible things that might become reality for my child, not to mention I felt so low about my family members from a genetic pool standpoint, I wondered if I'd ever be able to lift my head proudly again.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Incomplete
This particular edition of Bourke's book (I have not checked other editions) exhibits a complete failure of editing. The subject matter itself is fascinating, but the missing segments and/or pages makes it extremely difficult to maintain flow.So far there have been a number of instances of editing failure: on page 2 the last word is not finished on the following page and the text is interrupted. The same thing happens on pages 3, 14, 15, 16, 44, and 88.These are only the discrepancies I can identify.I have no idea how much text is actually missing. All told, don't buy this edition.

1-0 out of 5 stars frustrating book.

Editorial Review

In the words of Jonathan Weiner, "Time, love, and memory are ... three cornerstones of the pyramid of behavior." While some find it difficult to view humans as mere machines, molecular biologists maintain that most behavior is genetically based. Even skeptics and opponents agree that molecular biology may well change the way we all live in the 21st century. Little-known outside this exploding field, Seymour Benzer, his mentors, and his generations of students have studied the common fruit fly, Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Cornerstones of Our Existence
Time is for clock.Since everything has a clockwork gene, I suppose that in humans it means the biological clock involving procreation and evolution. This book, written by a prize-winning biologist, is more about birds, flys, fish, plants, but hardly about men and women.Disappointed me -- a psychologist would have covered the behavior process for us, I guess. He relates how humpback whales (not males) sing songs which can radiate thousands of miles under the ocean and they change from season to season like the Top Ten Rock Tracks of Chuck's choices. They constantly change courtship songsbut never repeat themselves. The songs are always new and never a 'golden oldie' from a decade or two back in time, as humans like to do.The nostalgia radio stations are the most popular now and have been for a long time.
5-0 out of 5 stars GOOD BYE TO JOHN DONNE AND ALL THAT?
This is a very accessible blending of a biography of Seymour Benzer, the most renowned Drosophilist (fruit fly geneticist), with many anecdotes and quotations, and a fascinating history of fruit fly genetics and related molecular biology. However, I was brought up short by one passage in it, on page 244 -

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Graduate Level Bio Bases Book
This book has great illustrations and presents material in an easy to understand manner for a graduate level psychology student.
3-0 out of 5 stars The 4th edition is far superior to the 5th
I used this text in its 4th edition in graduate school and I found it to be one of the clearest, concise, and best-illustrated textbooks on brain and behavior I'd ever read. The double column presentation of the text made reading and study a bit easier. Some of the motor and sensory pathway figures in the 4th edition were excellent--they were well detailed and presented in an appropriate amount of space on the page. However, this 5th edition is by far an inferior product. The text is now single column, and worst of all the once large, eye-catching, and detailed figures are too often shoved over into the margin--in many instances the 4th edition illustrations have been replaced by tiny dumbed-down figures.I cannot recommend this edition to students or instructors.A 5 for the text, a 1.5 for the presentation and illustrations.

5-0 out of 5 stars highly recommended
I was very impressed with the 3rd edition of this book back when I was in graduate student, and the 4th edition seems to have kept up the high standards.I highly recommend this book for anyone approaching advanced studies in any behavioral or neuroscientific field.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Elegant and Informative
As someone who is currently studying to become a Family Constellations Facilitator, I found John L Payne's book to be most timely and profoundly informative. As a phenomenological, energy-based modality, Family Constellations is a difficult subject to translate into the written word. Most of what I had read previously, has been translated from German or Dutch, and often lacks the elegant use of language which is so much part of this work.Written in an erudite yet lucid style, Mr Payne's book is highly accessible to both those who are new to the subject, and those who are already familiar with the work.Particularly impressive is Mr Payne's experiences with different cultures around the world and the expanded insights he offers into what, up until recently, has been a very Eurocentric modality.

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative
It's a fact that body and mind are not separate entities and an eventuality that massage therapists will encounter their clients' emotional expression in some sessions. This book shares Elliot Greene?s and Barbara Goodrich-Dunn's expertise, drawn from over thirty years experience each in dealing with body/mind phenomena and teaching why it comes about, what can happen, how it manifests in different forms, and other information about feelings and emotions that can arise during body work. The Psychology of the Body, written for massage therapists and anyone who works with the body, is a clear and concise book about a large and complex subject -- the human organism. Because of its acuity, I think it is also a good book on the subject of Somatic Psychology in general.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is an outstanding book.
I recently used this book as the basis for a graduate/advanced undergraduate seminar in ev psych, and the students loved it.My initial impression was that it might be too difficult for a first introductory course in the discipline, but the students disagreed strongly.I now think they're right. The book has good coverage of the necessary evolutionary theory, a lot of empirical evidence to support its claims, and a balanced and informed inclusion of material from different disciplines. It is all explained very clearly.I particularly liked the inclusion of cross-cultural material; a field that is concerned with the universal underpinnings of human cognition, preferences, and social behavior is incomplete unless it is willing to stray from the usual undergraduate subject pool and consider variation in the way these are expressed.I encourage the authors to revise this book as needed to keep it up-to-date.

5-0 out of 5 stars HUMAN evolutionary psychology
I am surprised at the relatively low sales numbers and lack of reviews for this excellent text. Although David Buss's text book is by far the better seller it leaves much to be desired. It is simply too "dumbed down" for the senior and graduate level students that it was intended for. Although Dr. Buss is a strong advocate of the evolutionary approach to human psychology, his treatment of evolutionary theory is rather weak and laymen like giving away his background in psychology rather than biology.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rare combination of hard science and a great read
While you may have read books that similarly describe genes and brain development, you will not find one that presents a better, more comprehensive or concise explanation.Marcus offers a short overview of current trends in genetics, neurology, microbiology, linguistics and psychology as well as presenting some of the most intriguing contemporary philosophical discussions. Through this book Marcus presents the hard-science arguments that are now shaping main-stream views about genetics and brain development without sensationalizing, overly speculating, or including entertaining personal anecdotes and diversions - common problems in popular science books about the brain.
2-0 out of 5 stars A whole lot of repitition and very few illustrations
Buy this book if you have avid interest in the role of DNA in the formation of the brain/mind. From a layman's perspective, I should add that, there are very few books on this topic that are at this level of simplicity. So the choice is limited if you want to know something about the subject without getting stopped by the science wall.
5-0 out of 5 stars very good recent information
I didn't plan on reading this book but it jumped into my hands, and I couldn't put it down. I already knew a lot about the topic, being a fan of Richard Dawkins and Stephen Pinker. But it was filled with great descriptions of fascinating lab work, which really pulled me in.

I work in an school-based program on teaching children and adults about bullying. This is my new favorite book to recommend to people-particularly parents about this topic.Great advice-practical, straightforward and right on in terms of the latest research on this very important topic.Parents of children who are being bullied are often in a lot of pain themselves and don't know how to help their children. This book takes a non-judgemental approach (It's not your fault!) and gives lots of great strategies-some suggested by children themselves. We use lots of their tips in our workshops.A definite purchase for any parent or teacher who wants to help children to understand this often traumatic experience. ...
