5-0 out of 5 stars The Bible of non-EEG Biofeedback; a practitioner must-have
If you are going to get into biofeedback as a practitioner you really must have this book. It provides a wonderfully comprehensive, detailed picture of a wide range of biofeedback applications, modalities, issues and techniques. Edited and partially written by Mark Schwartz, founder of the Mayo Clinic Biofeedback program, and Frank Andrasik, both past presidents of AAPB (Association for Applied Psychophysiology and Biofeedback,) the book offers an encyclopedic amount of information on themost frequently used forms of non-EEG biofeedback. It only has one chapter on EEG biofeedback-- though that one, by Joel Lubar, is an excellent. Even practitioners getting into work which focusses primarily on EEG should buy this book and include in their library, since it offers valuable perspectives on working with the kinds of clients/patients likely to be encountered. 5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Guide to Biofeedback Practice
Swartz and friends provide a thoughtful and extensive review of the history, methods, and applications of biofeedback practice. Primarily intended for health professionals, the book covers a variety ofdisorders/medical conditions that can be treated by biofeedback, andprovides detailed instructions as to how to treat each disorder. Schwartzhas been an integral figure in the development of professional standardsfor biofeedback practice as well, and the book also addresses this topic,as well as ethic issues. Has proven to be extremely helpful in training andpractice. Well written. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Sorting out the Issues
Kevin Laland is a prominent researcher in gene-culture coevolution, niche construction (the study of how organisms modify their social and physical environment, and thereby modify their own gene pool) and animal social learning. Gillian Brown is a primatologist who studies parenting behavior. Their book is a study of six strands of evolutionary theory as applied to human behavior: (a) Darwin and his pre-sociobiology followers (including Galton, Spencer, Lorenz, Tinbergen, von Frisch, and Ardrey); (b) the founders of sociobiology, including Dawkins, Trivers, Hamilton, Maynard Smith, and E. O. Wilson; and three offshoots of sociobiology, (c) behavioral ecology (including Hill, Kaplan, Hawkes, and Chagnon); (d) evolutionary psychology (including Cosmides, Tooby, Daly, Margo Wilson, Pinker, Buss); (e) memetics; and (f) gene-culture coevolution (including Cavalli-Sforza and Feldman, Boyd and Richerson, and Laland himself).
4-0 out of 5 stars God sense, not nonsense
The final chapter of E O Wilson's Sociobiology was a bombshell whose shockwaves reverberate today. Kevin Laland and Gillian Brown set out to sift through the morass of evolutionary approaches to human nature that is has spawned.5-0 out of 5 stars A breath of fresh air
This book is both a great read, and an informative one, for anyone interested in human behavior, evolutionary theory, and the links between the two.The area of potential evolutionary bases to human behavior has traditionally been filled with much controversy, some fighting, scattered irresponsible speculations and pronouncements that at times have produced tragic effects, and quite often, more heat than light.Laland and Brown have produced a book that is truly a breath of fresh air.One of the things I liked most about Sense and Nonsense is that Laland and Brown had actually sat down to talk with--and listen to--many of the leading proponents of different "schools" of thought. They work hard in Sense and Nonsense to give a fair presentation of each different approach, before moving on in each chapter to provide their own analysis of the approach presented from their own perspective as working scientists. In the midst of an area in which some researchers have been prone to simply shout louder--often literally--at those they disagree with, Laland and Brown have truly taken the time to listen, reflect, and form considered and thoughtful judgements. This is a service to all of us: After reading their book, I know that I will always look reflect differently on researchers' claims of evolutionary bases of human behavior, whether that's hearing them at a conference, or reading a journal article, or the latest best-selling book or TV interview. If you want to improve your understanding of evolution and human behavior, get a guided tour through the area and its controversies by two thoughtful experts, and come out with a changed perspective that will likely always stay with you, then read Sense and Nonsense.Great book. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Clear, Mostly Correct, Sometimes Tedious
This book provides a clear theory of what causes the personality differences between people that can't be explained by genetic differences. She focuses a fair amount on identical twins, because the evidence that their environmentally caused personality differences are the same as ordinary siblings, and the same whether they're reared together or apart, rules out many tempting theories.
3-0 out of 5 stars disappointing
I really love "The Nurture Assumption". I bought multiple copies to my relatives, friends and colleagues, and some of them bought additional copies to their friends and colleagues. I thought the major thesis of that book was confused, but the insight into the role of peer groups was both highly original and true. Harrris' failure at Harvard and her subsequent success, certified, among others, by the very people who found her incompetent many years ago, felt moving and most inspiring. Harris' childhood experience of peer-rejection as well as her illness brought additional layer of charm and humanity to her excellent writing. The writing remained quite good in the "No Two Alike" and the sense of humor is still there, although I find it to be a little bit too crude in both books. But most of the other qualities are lost.
4-0 out of 5 stars No cigar
This is book is about the origin of personality differences in people, which Ms. Harris presents as something of a detective story. She begins by noting the surprising, but well known facts:identical twins raised separately are no less alike than raised together:unrelated siblings are no more alike when raised together than when raised apart.Evidently the home environment, parenting practices, nor siblings have anything to do with the variation of personality. She also discuses the well-known fact that personality is partly genetically determined (comes from the biological parents). Now she asks, where does the other part of the variation come from?Is it the peer group (as she suggested in her previous book) or is there some other source to be discovered?

Editorial Review

The odds are high that someone close to you has been told he or she has a "chemical imbalance" in the brain, but the odds are slim that the doctor who said it could point to any convincing evidence that it was true. The increasing awareness that most biological theories underlying diagnoses of depression, schizophrenia, and other mental problems are based very loosely on accidental drug discoveries and promoted heavily by pharmaceutical companies is the basis for neuroscientist Elliot S. Valenstein's book Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Satisfactory text
I used this text for an introductory Psychology course. Overall, it was a decent reference. The examples that are offered in the text are practical and allow for a reasonable understanding of the principles of behavior. At times the book seems too simplistic, and superficial in its tone. But, on the other hand, it will be beneficial to those who are struggling with basic concepts such as reinforcement, punishment, contingency, and schedules of operant conditioning. I think that the concept of shaping was simply glossed over and not explored enough. Additionally, I found the humor that was used in some of the text to be offensive and patronizing at times. Certain parts of the book seem somewhat condescending, but other than that it covers the bases fairly well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Malott and company do it again
The (Elementary) Principles of Behavior series continues. This is the text I now use when I teach college-level courses in applied behavior analysis, and students are uniform in their praise for the book's engaging style and easily understood examples. The information is solid and does not get lost in jargon (while simultaneously not watering down information). The humor leaps out at you, sometimes unexpectedly and sometimes with the subtlety of a flying sledge-hammer.An important book for the bookshelf of everyone involved in the field of behavior analysis. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars it's a skimmer
okay, i usually enjoy reading body/mind texts, but this one was a bit dry. there is usefull and thought-proviking information within it, although i had to skip around and skim to find it. sometimes long-winded, sometimes self-reighteous, it is worth the read, but buy it used.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Mixed Bag
This book contains great insight and a very helpful, refreshing perspective of the human condition. However, it is also unintentionally humorous--and quite unhelpful--from the perspective that Alexander Lowen's primary aim is to be famous. He says so in a direct quote at the beginning of the book, and underscores his aim by citing his own work in footnote after footnote.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
Lowen's book does what they all do -- it gets us back in touch with our genuine, inner selves by making the emotional expression of oneself through the body the vehicle for authentic self-expression and spontaneity. It liberated me to feel more spontaneously without self-judgment and self-criticism, and to express my feelings without fear of judgment by others. If you're having trouble feeling or being fully conscious of yourself and your feelings, read Lowen's books and give some thought to Bioenergetic psychotherapy -- both will help tremendously. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Sourcebook for Therapy in the 21st Century
Dr. Rossi has again written a "trail blazing" book. Those familiar with his previous publications know the breadth of his work - a work spanning Ericksonian Hypnosis, Jungian Psychology, Mind-Body Healing, Biological rhythms, and the psychology of Dreaming. He has not written a book on mathematical models of healing but it is clear that he has also studied this area in considerable depth. All the subjects listed above are revisited and taken to new levels in this book. 5-0 out of 5 stars Peak of a brilliant career?
I mean this review to be brief so I'll state my conclusion at the start: this is an excellent book covering biochemistry up to psychotherapy. It is a must for any Rossi fan, if only because it has that 'culmination-of-a-brilliant-career' feel to it.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent integration of biology and mind
As a clinical psychologist with a background in biochemistry, I am very thrilled to see the author to integrate the gene expression, environment and mind into a coherent and scientifically-based picture. The book offers a solid foundation for the biological bases for psychotherapy and provides a holistic viewpoint upon human activities. It is highly recommended ! ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Close But No Cigar
This book has some interesting hypotheses but I don't believe it makes the case for the "Rape is the Last-Resort Reproductive Strategy" hypothesis as well as the Ghiglieri book does.It is known that rape is widespread throughout the animal kingdom, or something resembling mating by forceful coercion at any rate.I expected to see more of that kind of discussion than just a bunch of old statistics regarding us boring old homo sapiens.Keep in mind, though, that among humans the majority of rapists are men in their sexually peak years, and the majority of victims are those women in their peak reproductive stages as well.Sure, there are super-psychos that rape old women, kids or men, for example, but the mere existance of those datapoints do nothing to blunt the force of the evidence in favor of the theory that rape is the last-resort reproductive strategy. In fact, it is well-known that the majority of rapes that occur: a) are date rapes! and b) an overwhelming number of the victims tend to be college aged women! Also, let me say that explaining why something happens is NOT the same as justifying it.Given that Thornhill's wife is actually a rape counselor (!) it would be quite odd if he wrote a book justifying it, to say the least. What Thornhill and Palmer seek to do is take something that is a norm (yes, a norm!) of human culture, and try and figure out why the hell it's been going on for as long as anybody knows, and why it still is!
5-0 out of 5 stars Darwin's Male Privilege - Because he Can
The license to take what men want regardless of circumstances is the heredity of Darwin and the recognition that social bonding of males will support that privilege. Hence, social license borne of the interpretation of male superiority results in rape and other social infractions that society is willing to condone, or conveniently, fails to enforce, to the beneficial interest of all males, and to the disadvantage of women. Men rape because they can, therefore, and they can "get away with it."
5-0 out of 5 stars Sound Science, Despite What the Clueless "Feminists" Say
Rape is ALL about sex; it's NOT about violence and control (at least not as a means to an end; yes, it's undoubtedly violent, but that's not why men rape).Ask any rapist in prison. He'll tell you that he wanted to get his rocks off. That's the plain ugly truth -- and denying it won't change the basic truth of this postulate.I, for one, am glad that many other scientists -- both men and women -- are coming around to the ideas presented in this book and will hopefully use this information to UNDERSTAND rape and then apply REAL solutions to its eventual eradication from our society.Running around calling these great men (and women) of science "rape apologists" and "lunatics" does nothing but reveal the puerile close-mindedness of the criticizer. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars good book to learn about design principles, kind of disorganized though
This book is excellent for understanding what makes a successful product and how to design a new product for success. Maybe surprisingly, I found some of the principles also applicable to software programs and their UI front-end.
3-0 out of 5 stars Everyday Emotions?
Donald Norman's in depth look at things we use everyday makes you really think. You begin to analyze everyday objects. The book is all about the intention of an object and how an object is designed, which makes that object what it is. The book introduces and is laid out by the three aspects, or levels, of design: visceral, reflective, and behavioral. The examples and case studies are interesting reads that keep you involved. Yet, still left unanswered questions. The book could have done with out the last chapter on robotics that reads like an eerie science fiction narrative. ... Read more
