5-0 out of 5 stars C&B Reviewer Tanya Bates -
Alvin Morrow explains the methods of the Willie Lynch Letter in terms that anyone can understand. The ability to break down these effects are uncanning. With each new chapter, Black men and women are able to see how these brutal mental conditioning methods first used in slavery, affect each Black person today. Also, honest solutions are provided to promote unity, allow for healing, and ultimately freedom from these damaging mentalities.
5-0 out of 5 stars Guru Book Distrubution Book Review
About time, Breaking The Curse Of Willie Lynch is a book long overdue! The depth of this man Alvin Morrow's understandg on how the infamous Willie Lynch Slave making techniques forced me to probe slaverys lingering effects on my own conscious. He presents effective solutions to the problems in black male & female relationships, based on understing the problem at its core. Pay very close attention to the instructions before the first chapter. I guarentee that who ever reads this book will never again be the same. This Book is a must read for every Black man, woman, and any one who wants to know the truth about what is actually going on in the psyche of the children of ex-slaves. This book diserves international recogonition!Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Well-written and compelling, although with obvious biases
Andrew Newberg, professor of Radiology and Psychiatry, has written (along with Mark Robert Waldman) a sequel to his book, Why God Won't Go Away. The new book has strengths and weaknesses, but, should be of some interest to those who have an interest in spiritual matters and human behavior. The book is primarily written to address the question of how the brain works so that we arrive at what we believe to be true. The authors write from a spiritual perspective, but take numerous jabs at Christians and Christianity throughout the book. In contrast, New Age and Far Eastern religions seem to receive little or no criticism (co-author, Mr. Waldman seems to be into New Age type spirituality), and are actually endorsed. Likewise, atheists may not be entirely comfortable with the content, since it clearly challenges their cherished belief that that have no beliefs.
5-0 out of 5 stars An Astonishing Book
This fascinating book examines how human beings construct their beliefs about everything:how we map the realities of the world, build moral and political beliefs, and develop religious and spiritual beliefs about the universe. The authors base their premises on neurobiological research and then they integrate their findings with contemporary psychology and sociology without ever becoming overly technical, a difficult feat when it comes to explaining the neurological processes of the brain.

5-0 out of 5 stars Liberating!!!
Change Your Brain, Change Your Life was the most facinating and liberating book I have ever read. It really gave me insight to my real problems and assured me that I can change. I would reccommend this book to ANYONE!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Pinpoint your trouble spots. Seriously changed my life.
Not just for people with those conditions listed on the cover. It has helped me interact with everybody better. The book helped me to recognize people's strengths and weakness that may or may not be related to brain injuries but more realted to Dr. Amen's physciatric practice and expereince.I played soccer for 12 years I now I'm wondering if my brain has been affected in a negative way from the ball hitting my head so hard. Though it is just a possibility this book gives me some tools to recognize that possibility and take steps on my own to adjust my behavior to work with my own brain misgivings.

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of Time & Money
I read this book,a couple years back and was somewhat skeptical, initially. I wondered if just measuring brain metabolism in certain areas can really give you a full picture of whats going on. Still, other parts of the book seemed to contain good advice and insights.

Editorial Review

"There are two aspects to the human side of cancer: what cancer doespsychologically to people and their families, and how emotions and behaviors mayinfluence the risk of getting cancer and its outcome," writes Jimmie C. Holland,M.D., founder of the field of psycho-oncology (the psychological issues ofcancer) and chairman of the department of psychiatry and behavioral sciences atthe Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. "The human side of cancer is allencompassing; it's about you, your surroundings, and your experience of theillness."Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars an excellent resource...
This book comes highly recommended. It seeks to instill a feeling of acceptance and comfort for distressed cancer patients. The author discusses how to cope with difficult emotions in all stages of cancer, from initial diagnosis and onwards. As a doc working with cancer patients myself, I cannot overstate the importance of Dr Holland's message. For example, one of her points that really stood out for me was the idea that negative emotions cannot cause the cancer. Some people do worry that they must always remain positive, even if they have to fake it.Not true...being real and honest is far more important...having occasional negative thoughts and feelings is normal and does not make the cancer worse.Dr. Holland presents these ideas in one of the most non-judgmental ways you will ever read.
5-0 out of 5 stars Overall very helpful
This is one of the few books I can imagine my mother reading. She was recently diagnosed with advanced ovarian cancer and I ordered this book (and a couple others) to help my understanding of the emotional aspects of the disease and treatments. My mother generally escews "self-help" type books and outside help such as counseling. But this book is matter-of-fact and is presented in a way that respects individual differences and styles. It's not full of "touchy feely" (Mom's phrase) jargon but does address psychological issues effectively.Mom might actually find this one helpful, as I have. One weakness I found was the short section on ovarian cancer -- it addresses mostly fertility and sexuality issues -- the first doesn't apply to the older woman and the latter may or may not -- the writer seems to miss the boat on this type of cancer in the older woman.Overall, though, a helpful book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wallace may have seen something further than Darwin
Like what the great scientist Newton said "I see further for I stand on the shoulders of giants" Alfred Russel Wallace may have seen further than Charles Darwin when it comes to human nature when he later on believed that we have souls that has further made us more intelligent not just our brains which are designed by our genes.I believe that the paradigm shift where the soul or spirit needs to be accounted for when studying human nature is overdue.I myself has seen entities that could not be mistaken for something other than ghosts or spirits, although I do not blame you if you do not believe me for ghosts and spirits are hard to emperically observe by scientists so I do not blame them for being skeptical about something they could not emperically study. But I saw what I saw, as countless others all over the world saw.Although Darwin was right, Wallace saw further for he suggested that it is not only evolution that made us who we are but also because of our souls which are, as I must state again, emperically hard to observe by scientists.
3-0 out of 5 stars high on appeal, low on rigor
I used this book as a text book for a course I taught on Evolutionary Psychology. On the whole, the students really enjoyed the text and they found Buss's writing style to be very engaging and easy to read.I would agree.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Putting on the brakes"- making trauma therapy safer
This book is refreshing, well written and easy to read - it is full of sound common sense (something often lacking these days!) It stands on its own or can be read as a useful adjunct to Babette's earlier excellent book on the psychophysiology of trauma.Babette's wisdom, style and honesty around the many different approaches and tools for working with trauma are covered extensively and most usefully as fascinating case studies. I especially appreciated the chapter on learning from our mistakes and failures and the surprising fact that clients respect honest ignorance and they often don't get enough of it in the therapeutic encounter.Adaptability is the key word here..that is adapting to the unique needs of each client.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible connection of BMS
As an integrative therapist, I see these connections all the time. The chakra/thought/physical/emotional connections in what we hold and what then holds us.This book is a wonderful read, easy and engrossing with great information about the authors' own experience.I thoroughly recommend it to my students and to those interested in learning more about how the bodymind connection works in order to look deeper at who they are and are becoming.

5-0 out of 5 stars A highly recommended book!Fascinating!
If you ever wonder what kind of body type you have and what baggage comes with that profile, go grab this book up! It explains the thoughts that create some of the most common ailments that modern people walk around withnow. If you wonder about what causes you to have a broad chest and skinnylegs, this is the book for you. If you have any part in the healing artfield, this book is essential for your library. Enjoy it, be surelysatisfied and fascinated all in one sitting.

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic!
I purchased the mass-market edition of this book about 20 years ago (it is copyrighted 1977), but I never got around to reading it. I did start in on it and I always remembered the story that he starts the book with. The author (a psychologist and gerontologist)is standing naked before a groupof people in some type of encounter session and after having him walkaround a bit, a Dr. John Pierrakos proceeds to tell him all kinds of thingsabout himself that Pierrakos should not have been able to know. He was ableto read all kinds of things about a person just by observing the patternsof tension in their body. More recently I picked up a new copy and read thewhole book. I have read a lot on the subjects of yoga, meditation, bodywork, physical fitness, psychology, etc. and this is one of the mostinteresting books I have come across. The main point is that our minds andbodies can't really be separated. Our bodies can store tension. This can becaused by physical, emotional, mental or spiritual factors and usually oncethe tension goes in it doesn't come out (and can cause all kinds ofphysical problems). This is something I know a lot about, as I have spentdecades working to understand and release my own deep physical tension.Currently I have been practicing yoga (ashtanga yoga) and this is the bestthing I have found yet. There are many other approaches. But I find thatvery few people who should understand physical tension (yoga teachers, doctors, bodyworkers, even some Rolfers) really do understand thesubject. And I have never found this subject to be explained clearlyanywhere - except in this book. The chapters are organized around thesections of the body and are full of stories and examples from the author'sexperiences in working on himself and working with others. He integratesideas from Ida Rolf, Moshe Feldenkrais, Fritz Perls, Wilhelm Reich and manyother pioneers. After reading the book, I was at first sad that the authorhas not continued to write on this topic, but then I realized that he hasalready written the definitive book on the subject. And although it coversa lot of deep territory the book is very easy to read. Definitely aclassic. Most highly recommended. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to Understand
I found this book to be written in a way that is very easy to comprehend, and expresses the ideas clearly. The chapters are short and concise. This book is a great tool to use not only for classes, but to refer to in the future.

5-0 out of 5 stars You cannot go wrong...
I have a son with autism, a wife who is a psychologist and I run a home ABA program as well as helping in my son's pre-school that is instituting an ABA progam. You cannot go wrong with this book. The fact that this book is in it's 8th edition and is used by many college programs speaks to it's strengths.I did read the one dissenting review where it lowered someone's GPA because they did not understand or test well on the material.ABA is deceptive. While it is the just the science of good learning there is a lot of skill and aptitude needed.Being a member of T.O.P.S., Intertel, Mensa, the International High IQ society to name a few I can see that this is not for everyone. Some people are good at being students, some people are good at understanding and implementing good science; with ABA you need to be in the latter group. If you want a good starting/comprehensive book with a lot of meat on the bone this is the one.

3-0 out of 5 stars Easy to use, but terribly REDUNDANT!
As a psychology student, I encounted this book in a behavioral modification course.I was not overly impressed by it, but it does have it's usefulness.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too simple
I just finished this book and one of the things I didn't like about it was that it is written too simply.I felt like she was writing to middle-schoolers and she probably was aiming the book at middle & high-schoolers.I also didn't like how she protrayed herself as the nicest person at every school she went to.If she didn't like what some of the other kids did with their time, she should have made different friends and moved on.I don't doubt that most or even all of that stuff happened to her, but she did seem to wallow in it as another reviewer observed. And I definitely didn't like the way she name-dropped & bragged about herself to make herself feel better. From what I could gather, Jodee is just a few years older than me and I just don't recall anyone in the schools I went to getting bullied to that extent.Sure some students called other students names, but I don't recall any phycical stuff.
1-0 out of 5 stars Please Stop Writing, Jodee
I was very intrigued by the premise of this book, expecting it to be as eye-opening and heartbreaking as Dave Pelzer's books, particularly since she was compared to him. Unfortunately, it is shaming to Pelzer and others who have experienced such trauma in their lives to place Blanco in the same category with them.
