This book taught me a lot about myself. It's worth buying.

3-0 out of 5 stars different color sign post.
The Peipers give a psycholgical account on presence. They are talking about the same things that people like Eckhart Tolle and Pema chodron talk about but they put their own physicians slant on it which I guess can be OK.All paths lead to Rome.

I have been so discouraged in my life trying to make changes. This is the first self-help book that has really helped me.First, it described me and my problems exactly both in relation to my work and also my attempts to stay healthy and fit. Then it gave me really down-to-earth suggestions, most importantly including what to do when I hit a wall. For the first time I have been able to get past my failures and keep going on my resolutions.I cannot recommend this book highly enough!! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The best new book on feminism and science
If you are teaching a course in cultural studies, women's studies, history of science, or social theory, do your students a favor and place this book on your syllabus. I cannot think of another recent study that engages in such an incisive, informative, and reader-friendly manner with the crucial questions of the relationship between cognitive evolutionary science and feminism. Vandermassen's scientific grounding is impeccable, and her position as a feminist scholar makes her particularly attuned to challenges involved in negotiating the issues of gender and science.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful reference - college through graduate school
This review applies to the 6th edition, which I bought as required reading for my undergraduate Physiological Psychology course. Now, in graduate school, I often refer to this text. The CD-ROM that came with the book has been invaluable as a "refresher" in basic neuroanatomy. The book is written in an easy-to-understand manner.I give it four stars instead of five only because I wish that the authors went into more detail about certain key topics, such as neurotransmitters and brain structures.

5-0 out of 5 stars AN INTENSE BOOK FOR ANYONE INTERESTED IN THE BRAIN
Being forced to read a textbook at school is one thing, but being asked to read about the brain and its cognitive functions is other. For any one fascinated with the brain, this physiological rollercoaster into the mind is very intense and very in depth. ( At times it may be hard to follow because of the amount of concentration needed to go along with its terminologies). Not recommended as a reference book. It is definately more of a textbook for any medical-school-oriented individual>>>

5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful
I am an undergraduate neuroscience major at Univeristy of Massachustts, Amherst, and I had the author of this book , Dr Neil Carlson, as my professor for both the undergrad and grad level of this course. I am now a TA for the course, so I know the book pretty well. It is written in exactly the same style as he lectures. This probably because the book was originally developed from notes he used to hand out, which you can tell when reading the book. He has little personal comments inserted in paragraphs; he writes in the first person; he has strange analogies; he sometimes jumps from subject to subject; but overall, the book is quite good. The best things about the book are the diagrams and the cd. They very clearly illustrate exactly what he's discussing, and make the subject at hand easier for students to understand. As for the breadth of the material covered, it seems to be quite wide. He starts off with the basics, like neuron structure and brain anatomy, but then quickly moves on from there to sleep mechanisms, eating behavior, learning and memory, etc. The concentration of the book is on the effects of hormones on the brain and our behaviors resulting from those effects. I would recommend taking some introductory biology courses before trying to tackle the book; my psych major friend who hasn't had a tougher time with the class. Overall though, the book is not that hard to understand. I've learned a lot from it and not been bored while doing it. It's one of the most popular textbooks for the physiology of behavior out there. My book is dogearred from so much use, and though I have used it for 3 semesters, I still feel like I can glean more information from it! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Crucial book for ambitious parents
Rae Pica is very passionate about her subject, and provides the data to back up her beliefs. Parenting is so difficult, not just because children are so impressionable and innocent, and yet so demanding, but also because parents themselves cannot help but regress to their own childhoods. Books like this help to keep parents sane, reminding them that their good intentions will not heal the human race until they are aligned with the natural and healthy development of each individual personality that is in their care. This book provides much evidence of the importance of a more intelligent approach to mental, emotional and physical development than is currently employed in the vast majority of US schools. The games and suggestions she gives are easy for anyone to employ, no matter how tired or overwrought a parent may be! I'm especially pleased about her comment on swimming -- my niece was a competitive swimmer from a very young age, and although she was nationally ranked for her age, development of her muscular & bone structure became problematic (and expensive!) during her teens. (Why no one mentions this when they talk about how Michael Phelps can't walk or run properly is beyone me!) But not only parents should read this -- it's so easy to understand, that I'd give it to the babysitter too... they have just as much influence on your child as anyone else.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent guide to encouraging physical activity
If you are interested in encouraging your child to adopt a more active lifestyle, you will want to add this book to your parenting book library. Rae Pica has written a well-researched, parent-friendly guide to promoting physical fitness in children. She starts out by talking out about the reasons parents will want to encourage their kids to become more physically active (e.g., the scary childhood obesity stats that stare us in the face every time we open the health section of a newspaper these days) and then warns of the perils of forcing your child to become a 'superkid' (a child who lives and breathes sports 24/7). She then goes on to talk about the important role parents have to play in promoting physical activity in children and offers some concrete strategies for doing so. The result is an excellent guide that every parent who is serious about combatting the childhood obesity crisis should own.

5-0 out of 5 stars Neurobehavioral disorders of childhood
Robert Melillo from the Carrick Institute for Graduate Sciences in Florida and Gerry Leisman from the College of Staten Island of the City University of New York have collaborated on this impressive (text)book on neurobehavioral disorders of childhood.
5-0 out of 5 stars Groundbreaking work!
In the confusing world of learning disabilities and functional disconnection, the theories are many but the answers are few.Dr. Melillo and Dr. Leisman have put forth a theory that has been meticulously researched and tested over many hundreds of patients and many years. The excitement herein lies not in a new theory, but in the treatment protocols inherently implied with the neurological consequences of hemisphericity. It opens up a world of possiblities of treatment for these children, and builds upon, rather than replaces, many of the great behavioral and rehabilitative programs that are already in place for these children.I have personally seen life-changing results with patients in the application of this system of evaluation and treatment in just the short time I have been using it.For any practitioner interested in the specific treatment of LD's, this book and its protocols are a must. ...
