Liebert and Liebert's Personality is superb.Using four major strategies (Psychoanalytic, Dispositional, Environmental, Representational), the authors delve into each major theory as if they themselves had been itsformulator. Then, they turn around and fervently critique the same theorythey had lauded only a few pages earlier, all the while relatingconnections among seemingly fundamentally distinct theories. The effect issensational. As someone who has very little background in Psychology andwho is boning up on the subject in order to pursue a graduate career in thefield, I thank The Liebert's for their hard work and diligent research.Ilook forward to the next edition. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Can't put it down.
This book is an amazing introduction to Typology. I started reading it and could not put it down. There is so much useful information in this book that can only help you when you have dealings with others. It can also help you learn a great deal about yourself. The authors pointed out that was the main purpose of this book.5-0 out of 5 stars Knowing Your Type
Have you ever walked into a co-workers office and asked them a question as they first look at you with a glazed look, and then ask you to repeat the question?Have you dealt with a people who take forever to answer anything? How about trying to understand individuals who seem to be somewhat unfocused and a bit scattered in their conversation?4-0 out of 5 stars Now if only schools used this stuff...
The descriptions of the types are great. This is very well written and most informative. I recommend it most definitely and wish the inefficient, one-size-fits-all obsolete psych of the education system could get thrown out in favor of this more practical psych system.Read more

Editorial Review

A middle-aged neuroscientist walking down Bourbon Street spots a T-shirt that reads, "I don't know, so maybe I'm not." This stimulus zooms from eyes to brain, neuron by neuron, via tiny junctions called synapses. The results? An immediate chuckle and (sometime later) a groundbreaking book titledRead more

3-0 out of 5 stars We Are Our Synapses?!
"Synaptic Self" is a worthy follow up on LeDoux's seminal work "The Emotional Brain" which was published in 1996.Before starting this book, if you are a believer in mind-body dualism, you have to suspend your belief and accept that we are entirely the product of our nervous system. That is, our behaviors, thoughts and emotions, indeed our personality, are entirely created by our brain and nervous system. With that premise, LeDoux takes us through the neuronal organizations and brain circuits that are responsible for what he calls the mental trilogy of cognition, emotion and motivation. He then explains how these brain circuits are coordinated and unified to make a person who he or she is. As the title of the book implies, the core of LeDoux's assertion is that the mental trilogy ultimately exists at the synaptic level. In other words, as he puts it, "You are your synapses. They are who you are."
5-0 out of 5 stars Not an easy read but well worth the effort
Joseph LeDoux's book Synaptic Self is one of those works that is so dense with material, it may take a second run through to really appreciate it all.Although probably written for a general audience, it is not an easy read.Don't expect to be able to zip right through it in a few days. His descriptions of the central nervous system, how it develops, how it functions, and how it matures, is very detailed. It gets down to the chemistry of the process and into the sub-areas of brain topography in a much more thorough way than many books of this kind tend to do.I have a health care background and started my career as a neurology nurse, and it still took me some time to go through the material.
5-0 out of 5 stars very helpful information for philosophers
While there is a philosophy of physiology, there is also a physiology of philosophy. Physiology going on is PRIOR TO any philosophizing going on.

5-0 out of 5 stars Compelling analysis into the causes of mass violence and hope for the future
The Roots of Evil is an important book, both in its application of a comprehensive theoretical lens to the problem of mass violence and in its practical usefulness for efforts to prevent genocide from happening again.Staub explains how difficult conditions combine with social/political events to enable inter-group violence using detailed historical examples. His analysis shines light on the darkest actions of human beings, making sense of how neighbors can turn against each other. The book also offers hope that mass violence can be prevented, especially through efforts to humanize the "other" and speak out during the early events that can lead to genocide. In a world in which dehumanization remains all too common, this book will remain critical reading for years to come.It has been an inspiration for me, and for many others working in diverse fields related to peacebuilding.I recommend it highly.

5-0 out of 5 stars An important book
This book, by one of today's most eminent genocide scholars, presents a simple to grasp analysis of the main human drives causing mass violence and genocide. Its ability to combine these drives into an easily understandable system makes it extremely useful for people that need to deal with this subject on the ground in combating ethnic violence. Professor Staub's book has inspired communication campaigns against the hatred fanning the genocide and mass killings in Rwanda, the DRC and Burundi. There, survivors of one of the last centuries' worst outbreaks of mass murder, find comfort in the way his analysis sheds light on how seemingly incomprehensible acts could be committed by the most seemingly normal people. around them.

1-0 out of 5 stars A pompous plan for solving the world's problems...
This book begins with the arrogant assertion that psychology in general, and the author in particular, can change mankind and create a "caring and compassionate" society in which genocide and all lesser forms of evil will be unthinkable. It then goes through several hundred pages of repetitive ramblings, introducing and summarily dismissing the theories of Hobbes, Freud, and many others, relegating Nietzche to the position of Hitler's ego, and ultimately arriving at a conclusion that could have been summed up in a short article: humans are frustrated by "difficult life conditions" (a phrase which grates on the mind with each repetition after the first 50 pages of overusage), which causes them to join together to lash out against those who they deem responsible. His interpretations of the causes of the four instances of genocide which he chooses to discuss seem absurd in some cases, and contradict themselves in others. The last two chapters outline the author's naive plan for the construction of a warm and fuzzy world of understanding and compassion.Even if his plan were plausible, his view of human nature is ultimately deluded and irrational, and it is therefore of no value. Some may say this reviewer is cynical or jaded, but I prefer realism to useless optimism. An authoritative book on the psychological drives behind mass killings which brings together the ideas of many great minds and uses convincing evidence to support itself would be most welcome. This, however, is not it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars First class resource on the little understood world of PD.
Theodore Milon's work on personality disorder's is a tour de force of the little understood world of "personality disorders in modern life."
5-0 out of 5 stars An absolutely wonderful book on personality.
As an "advanced layman" interested in personality, I can fully endorse all that has been said by others about this book. It's not often that you find a book intended as a textbook that's....hard to put down, but this book certainly qualifies.
5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific Personality Textbook
For those looking for the perfect Masters level textbook on Personality this is the one.Throughout the entire book, the author frames the discussion from the various therapeutic perspective: cognitive, biologic, psychodynamic, interpersonal, and evolutionary-neurodevelopmental.They cover functional and structural domains and contrast each personality type with related personality structures. They also break each personality disorder and trait into variations.Their incorporation of personality trait with disorder would allow instructors of personality to incorporate the various testing within the personality disorder framework. The book is very weak on therapy strategies and techniques for each disorder, but that is not why one would want the book.A terrific textbook on personality disorder. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Foundational book for conflict resolution
Easy reading, with good examples of the various types and styles of conflict management, metaphors and escalation.Upon hearing the fate of Phil Hartman, I immediately thought of this book, and how its examples may have definately helped, as it has helped me to clarify issues in my marriage. However, the book failed to incorporate enough visual demonstrations of its "hands-on" ideas such as flowcharts or other types of process charts, thus probably causing the "visual-learner" type of audience to not be able to keep track of the "how-to" process. The book was used for a Public Conflict Resolution Ph.D course, however I would recommend it for any type of college course relating to conflict management. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars There is help out there!
I've struggled my whole life with a number of issues: perfectionism, low self-esteem, self-destructive behaviour.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for understanding and changing perfectionism
As a psychologist working in a college counseling center, I see many students who beat themselves up with perfectionistic-type thoughts such as "If I don't get an A in this class, I'm a failure" or "I can't let my friends know I'm upset because they'll think there's something wrong with me."These destructive thoughts can have a devastating impact by leading to anxiety, depression, and a host of other difficulties, and this is the #1 book I recommend to students who are struggling with these issues.5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful book
After reading the main part of the book, I am so grateful for having bought this book. I have been extremely depressed because of my excessive high standards toward myself. This book acts as a mirror to my problems and I can see my perfectionistic tendencies in many aspects. I also try to work through the techniques suggested by the authors to overcome my perfectionistic thoughts and behavior. I cannot say that I have eliminated all such problems but I can see I am on the right track! I am now more aware of my fear and anxiety since most of them orginated from my perfectionism. Read more

I ordered this book, but unfortunately held it for a future class.I discovered that it was an "abridged" version.I am missing the following chapters: 6, 8, 9, 10, and whatever might come after these. This has indeed downplayed a great rating and review.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Integrated Approach to Personality.
This extraordinarily well-written book encompasses an integrated approach to personality and its complexity. Needless to say, the field of personality is extremely intricate and dynamic. However, Pervin manages to provide a comprehensive yet lucid account of the most important approaches to personality. The strength of this book is that it integrates all the major perspectives. What is more, every chapter features key words, summaries and most importantly contributions and criticisms of each theory. The book is well structured and written in a way that captures the reader's attention. Thus, it is interesting, informative and extremely useful. Moreover, every theory gives its explanation to psychopathology and its possible causes. It should however be pointed out that this book is intended primarily for academic purposes. Nevertheless, I strongly recommend this book to all people who want to gain an insight into psychology at its best! After all, I think it is momentous to gain an insight into why some people develop maladaptive behavioral patterns and show systematic errors in thinking. Finally, this book attempts to answer the most difficult question pertaining to this dynamic field, namely: what factors contribute to the development of personality? Pervin clearly shows that interplay between biological and environmental determinants is necessary to provide an adequate explanation of personality. In my view, a theory that fails to intertwine both biological predispositions and environmental determinants with respect to personality is a flawed theory. Furthermore, a theory that cannot be disproved is a poor theory. In conclusion, this is truly an excellent book that integrates both descriptive and explanatory elements. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Enneagram - A great life-tool
I first discovered the Enneagram from Richard Rohr's earlier work, both the first edition of this book and some tapes. It has been life changing for me and I highly recommend it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing book
The Enneagram is a beautiful book that explores the depths of our original sin and Jesus' redemptive work in that.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Resource
Many Christians feel uneasy about the Enneagram as a way of deepening self-awareness; this is mostly because the test has some connections to the Sufi religion and new age thought. That makes this book by Richard Rohr necessary and helpful to be able to gain the insight of the enneagram from a source that is operating from a Christian worldview. This book has sections on where the enneagram came from, what it is, what the 9 enneagram personality types are, and how Christians can benefit from it without adopting non-Christian ideas. The most helpful part is part II of the book which goes into depth on the 9 types, from a Christian perspective. Most helpful, Rohr identifies the root sin of each type, and how God can redeem that sin into a beautiful gift. He also talks about what gifts the types naturally have, and how we can grow in those. I have heard that the enneagram does not put people in boxes, rather, that it helps people identify what boxes they are already in and how to get out of them. This book is very helpful for understanding yourself and others, and for getting out of the boxes that are keeping you from living in a full and redeemed way. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars IT WAS NOT ME!!!!
I found this book after reading a review on another book. I started looking for something to help me to understand co-dependency which I was told I had after a hard melt down and diagnosed with PTSD and major depression. Had someone told me 5 years ago that I was a victem or co-dependant I would have laughed and thought they were crazy. From the very first page, I watched as my life unfolded, wept as I have finally come to understand that IT WAS NOT ME! There was never anything wrong that I did. That in the hands of these type of people, they prey on your very strengths, everything that should be good about yourself they twist and turn to use as there own tool to feed there never ending hunger. For me this book has been the answer to the question I have been asking for the last 45 yrs! Its the answer to how I'm going to live my life for the next 45. A must read!! For me a life raft thrown from the Titanic, I now have a chance.

5-0 out of 5 stars If the other 16 reviews didn't convince you...
to buy this book, then don't. Check it out of your local library. I can pretty much guarantee that you will read this book cover-to-cover, non-stop, as I did.And THEN you will buy it!Why? Because you will want your very own copy to highlight, mark up, to put huge exclamation points by certain lines or paragraphs even as your tears are falling on the pages. You will want to keep this volume by your bedside, so that when you wake up in the middle of the night, weeping from dreams you cannot remember, Marie-France Hirigoyen's wisdom will bring you back to a place of safekeeping, of detachment, of rationality.

I wish I had read this book years ago.I went through years of therapy trying to figure out and explain my mother's hurtful behaviors towards me.The impact of these hurt felt devastating, but I was never sure if it was just me being too sensitive. This book is trememdously validating. It explains the abusive tactics, the inner psyche of the abuser and the victim, and the impact of being subject to such abuse. If you ever wonder if you were the target of emotional abuse, read this book. It'll save your life and bring you clarity.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good
This book is fantastic! It really explains why some people end up with personality disorders and how to go about having a person see their dysfunctional patterns. The book is well structured with good outlines of the various schemata. However, after about page 70, it gets a bit repetitive. The case illustrations are helpful, though I couldn't help noticing how neatly well packaged they were. Schema therapy definitely provides an excellent framework within which to conceptualize personality disorders.Apparently it is more helpful to borderline personality disorder than psychodynamic therapy. So,in summary, while I really appreciated how personality disorders were conceptualized, I found the book a bit repetitive... For a more 'academic' approach, you might want to try the Handbook of Personality Disorders.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Schema TherapyBible
This highly professional yet clearly articulated book covers the history, concepts, and techniques of Schema Therapy. While this therapeutic approach originated in cognitive therapy, it has evolved into a systematic ecclecticism that includes cognitive, behavioral, experiential, and other useful techniques for identifying and healing schemas, modes, coping patterns, etc.Highly recommended for the professional with an interest in helping clients alter personality disorders and other disturbances that are resistant to other therapeutic approaches.Fred P. Gallo, PhD, author of "Energy Psychology" and co-author of "The Neurophysics of Human Behavior"

5-0 out of 5 stars Thought provoking development in integrative therapy
As a psychodynamically trained therapist, I have sensed for many years that a 'pure' approach to therapy has severe limitations. This led me to get further training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and to use this with my clients - to some good effect. However, I felt uncomfortable using this 'either, or' approach to therapy (either psychodynamic OR CBT) and have been trying for a long time to work out a way of integrating these two approaches in my practice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clear writing, logical structure - everything you need to know about respondent biases and how questions ought to be asked.
Tourangeau, Rips and Rasinki collaborated over four years to put this terrific volume together - and the hard work shows in its 342 pages of clearly written text and and close to 40 pages of references. Full marks all round!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Foundation
This book offers a really good introduction to many of the primary post-Freudian theorists. It was clear to read and really provided a sound introduction to some complicated ideas. This book was better than the others of its type.Worth the investment.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good start to see the evolution of the theory
StClair has made a brief summary of the followers of Freudianpsychodynamic thought in the book.It is nice to see the outline of thetheories of many important theorists in the field. For me, the book was agood guide to enter the object relations and self psychology. The bookgives a global look on recent psychoanalytic teories. After reading thebook I found myself closer to some of the theorists concerned in the bookand went on exploring more on them. It was a good start for a beginner likeme. ... Read more
