3-0 out of 5 stars Good test, but you have options in this area.....
This is a very good Enneagram test, but the price is steep and you can get the test along with an introductory book to the Enneagram by buying Riso and Hudson's book "Discovering Your Type."Going this route is even less expensive than buying this pamphlet. You can also take the test online at Riso and Hudson's website.Unfortunately, they do not offer the same test in their book "The Wisdom of the Enneagram," however; the mini-tests that begin each chapter are useful for differentiating out scores that approximate each other on this test.
5-0 out of 5 stars Accurate and Unambiguous, Significance and Depth
When I decided to accurately determine my enneagram type this was the test that I chose. Personally, I found it to be both perceptive and unambiguous. None of the 144 questions didn't seem to "fit"- I was able to answer them with certainty. It was obvious that something of significance and depth was being ascertained here.
5-0 out of 5 stars Know Thyself
This test helped me to realize how wonderful I really am.It scored me equally on all of the introverted characteristics while showing that I am balanced between emotion, thinking, and action.I know what my strengths are and I can focus on enhancing them.Knowing what you're made of is half the battle. For everyone who is into self knowledge, this test and supporting literature is a must. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Now I get it
I have a personality disorder and I've found it difficult to change. This book explained why and gave me a concrete method to effectuate change.I read the lay version "Reinventing Your Life" but I found this version more useful. After almost 5 years of therapy with a competent therapist, I felt like a cognitive therapy failure. Now I know that cognitive therapy can work, but not the way I expected it to--not the way it works for many people. No "Ten Days to Self Esteem" for me.I have to work harder, at a deeper level, in order to get better. This book gives practical advice on how to achieve the change I want.

4-0 out of 5 stars Clear, Mostly Correct, Sometimes Tedious
This book provides a clear theory of what causes the personality differences between people that can't be explained by genetic differences. She focuses a fair amount on identical twins, because the evidence that their environmentally caused personality differences are the same as ordinary siblings, and the same whether they're reared together or apart, rules out many tempting theories.
3-0 out of 5 stars disappointing
I really love "The Nurture Assumption". I bought multiple copies to my relatives, friends and colleagues, and some of them bought additional copies to their friends and colleagues. I thought the major thesis of that book was confused, but the insight into the role of peer groups was both highly original and true. Harrris' failure at Harvard and her subsequent success, certified, among others, by the very people who found her incompetent many years ago, felt moving and most inspiring. Harris' childhood experience of peer-rejection as well as her illness brought additional layer of charm and humanity to her excellent writing. The writing remained quite good in the "No Two Alike" and the sense of humor is still there, although I find it to be a little bit too crude in both books. But most of the other qualities are lost.
4-0 out of 5 stars No cigar
This is book is about the origin of personality differences in people, which Ms. Harris presents as something of a detective story. She begins by noting the surprising, but well known facts:identical twins raised separately are no less alike than raised together:unrelated siblings are no more alike when raised together than when raised apart.Evidently the home environment, parenting practices, nor siblings have anything to do with the variation of personality. She also discuses the well-known fact that personality is partly genetically determined (comes from the biological parents). Now she asks, where does the other part of the variation come from?Is it the peer group (as she suggested in her previous book) or is there some other source to be discovered?

5-0 out of 5 stars States of Denial - setting the record straight
This review is in response to the offensive one posted on this website. Clearly the reviewer who rated this excellent book with one star and made what I regard as slanderous comments about the professionalism of one of the most illuminating thinkers of our time, is driven by ideological objection to Cohen's analysis.
4-0 out of 5 stars Reader from London--Should Read London Papers
States of Denial: Knowing About Atrocities and Suffering by Stanley Cohen was awarded the 2002 British Academy Book Prize. 5-0 out of 5 stars I didn't know I knew what I didn't know
This is one of those "it should be required reading" books. Although his emphasis is on the larger mass atrocities and sufferings, Cohen examines denial from the personal to the political, from harmless "I'm not eating as many cookies as I really am," to the most horrendous "It's not torture; it's just heavy pressure" to the apathetic, "Gee, 5000 Ruwandans killed this week; I wonder how the Giants did last night." He concisely reviews the explanations of denial--Freudian, cognitive, etc--and neatly identifies the different types, styles, motives and cultural and personal collusions. Cohen's writing is clean, engaging, to the point, neither tediously over-intellectual nor patronzing, obviously well-researched and professional. He assumes his reader is familiar with basic social and political sciences and history and doesn't belabor points others have made. Most importantly, the book is compassionate, not in a gooey, all-is- forgiven and understood sense, but in its acknowledgement of denial as a universal of human behavior. Cohen handles an uncomfortable subject, not knowing what we know, a behavior of which we are all guilty, in a straight-forward, non-accusatory fashion. One has the sense that Cohen has not only being willing to see what goes on in a way that few have the courage to do, but that he has also refused to see, as we all do, and come to terms with his own denials, that his fastination with denial is not only as an observer but as a participant as well. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely a Fascinating Read - a review of "Self-theories"
This is a fascinating book. And while I'm just a mom with no particular background in psychological research, I found I had no difficulty either understanding the procedures of the research, or finding `everyday' applications for the profound information that Carol Dweck and associates provide.
5-0 out of 5 stars Scary title, great book!
I was intimidated by the title of this book, and was afraid it was goingto be highly academic. However, the book is completely accessible andfascinating.Dr. Dweck describes her remarkable studies on motivation andachievement, and shows that a fixed view of intelligence (meaning: eitheryou're born smart or you're not) sells us short. Her work has enormousimplications for both childrearing and teaching. This book should berequired reading for all parents and teachers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reader-friendly
Yes I would definitely say it is reader friendly. Why? I sat and read through and what kept me reading it to end was that it is comprehensible. THere was nothing new in the sense that her subjects were everyday people -students, there were no those statistics that hardly made a sense to alayman like me,it was thought provoking - made me ponder over what reallywent wrong with my kid and myself, gave me some idea on how to tacklefuture problems concerning my kid's attitude towards schoolwork, and mostof all it was presented in a captivating manner. It's like reading astorybook. I didn't have to put on a thinking cap to make myselfintelligent to understand her message.I definitely would recommend to myfriends who are housewives. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Great at leaving the rest of the world out
This is addressed exclusively to people from the US. Or at least this reader could not connect with the ideas and especially the examples provided, complete with their very (overly?) detailed US settings.

1-0 out of 5 stars Please, don't bother!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I bought this book because of my interest in the topic of resilience. Boy, was I disappointed! The authors were all over the map, borrowed from everybody on information not even remotely connected to the topic they chose to write about. What's more, how anyone can take what they say and utilize it in any substantive way is a mystery to me. I've come to realize that after reading this drivel, they are no greater authority on this topic and the information they espouse is nothing new.

5-0 out of 5 stars MUST READ
I never write reviews, however I must say that this book has very much opened my eyes to not only WHY I respond to situations the way I do, but HOW to moderate those responses and even change my response by simply changing the way that I think in the moment. This is NOT one of those multitude of self-help books that simply say to "let go" of your thoughts, or give asinine mantras to chant. The methods in this book work... but YOU must be willing to do the WORK necessary to benefit from the approaches that the authors describe...especially when you are responding to an adversity in real time. Give this book a good read to understand what the authors are saying, AND THEN re-read and STUDY and APPLY the methods. This is definitely a book that you want to re-read over and over. Good luck! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars True...Completely True
As an introverted person, this is a very valid book detailing the characteristics of an introvert.I have gone through many of the situations decribed in this book.A must buy if you know someone with this personality.A++++ Book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for parents and teachers
As an innie, I appreciate any resources that help others to understand the different learning styles and needs that introverts have from extroverts.I don't need a scientific explanation of why I am different, but do need to be understood for who I am.I am pleased to see that one of the reviewers found this valuable both as a parent and as a teacher.I wish more teachers would be open-minded toward our differences, and accepting of the different needs of different children.Too often children are expected to fit into one mold, and if they don't then they are labeled as difficult or uncooperative (or learning disabled).

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Parents!
As an extroverted parent, I was nervous when my son showed signs of being an introvert.I was worried that he wouldn't survive in our extroverted society.Even though my son is 9 mos. old, this book helped me understand and appreciate him.I don't believe the author's main point to this book is to scientifically explain the introverted child.I think it is to explain how to help facilitate our child's world so that it helps them be "them."

This book was such a gift to read.It gave me such freedom in my spiritual journey.I always thought that I wasen't spiritual because I couldn't concentrate when I was reading the bible or I didn't have a special "time" when I read the bible.Understanding my personality and how God has made me helped me to realize that I'm fine just the way I am and God loves me no matter what!!!Thank you Marita for writing such an incredible book.

By understanding my personality's strengths and weakness, I have come to realize my personality affects more than just how I approach housework, friendships, marriage or parenting - my personality affects all areas of my life including my spiritual growth. In this book I was able to identify how each different personality approaches God, daily devotions and spiritual maturity. It is so important to understanding that it is "OK" to be different from one another. God made us all different so the world wouldn't be monotone - imagine a one-note symphony! This information gives me the freedom to accept God's love for me according to my own personality and in return helped me learn how to give that grace and love to others. Because, life is all about the LOVE. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Undergraduate Abnormal Psychology
This was my textbook for an upper level undergraduate psychology class. It is intended for use in a survey course in abnormal psychology. It begins with a case history which is referred to as the book progresses. An overview of the four main psychological paradigms comes next. The subsequent chapters examine topics in abnormal psychology under these paradigms. There is also a chapter on psychological assessment, testing, and classification. The subjects that the book covers range across anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, personality disorders, dissociative disorders, sexual dysfunctions, etc. The DSM-IV classification criteria are given for the discussed disorders. For the most part, each chapter uses case studies to exemplify its points. I found this to help ground what I was reading in real life scenarios. Aside from this, there are several side notes and highlights in the text which round out the picture. It is not difficult to read through, and I did not feel that anything was left out. An undergraduate introductory psychology class is a help and should be a prerequisite for reading the book, but one can manage without it. There are also several color photos and charts interspersed throughout the book. This keeps the reader from becoming too bogged down in black and white text. Also, each chapter is divided and subdivided neatly into headings which make for an easier read if one must take a break and provide for easier reference. While the book will not allow the reader the ability to immediately practice psychology, I found it to serve quite well as an undergraduate textbook.

5-0 out of 5 stars Erikson is the man when it comes to understanding identity.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow!!
This is an incredible book. It takes you through the harrowing, depressing mind of Billy Milligan. It amazes me so much that it's a true story. I guess sometimes, fact is better than fiction. It's my favorite book - a must-read if you have any interest at all in psychology.

4-0 out of 5 stars A different read about MPD
As with any work of non-fiction, we should allow ourselves to believe as much or as little as we wish to what the author(s) has to reveal in the story.I found this book to be an extraordinary account of the life of a young man living with MPD and the struggles he faced both personally and in society.
