4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent material, but slow going
Offers a wonderfully comprehensive collection of current theories and trends, but is (for the most part) *very* dry reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very comprehensive review of psychopathy
Utilizing this book in writing a paper for graduate school, I found it to be very helpful and thorough. The foremost experts in antisocial personality disorders and psychopathy have collaborated to comment oneverything from history and etiology, to recent developments in comorbidityand treatment. A must have for anyone interested in the subject.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best, comprehensive review of psychopathy!
I just received this book about a week ago.It is the best book you can find on psychopathy. It is well written, with each chapter flowing from one to another in a coherent manner. It provides a good historical account of psychopathy and what I really enjoyed was the chapters on fMRI and neurobiology studies!I only wish there had been more of neurobiology and legal scholarship. This book is not a "pop" psychology book, rather it is for academics and researchers -- thank goodness! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL RESOURCE
WORRIED NO MORE by Dr. Aureen Pinto Wagner is a very comprehensive and informative book designed to help parents, school personnel and mental health professionals deal with anxious children and adolescents. The second edition has a completely new look making it even more reader friendly, practical and easy to use. Dr. Wagner uses her vast knowledge of and empathy toward anxious children to provide specific strategies as well as forms and tools for decreasing and managing anxiety. I have found these strategies to be highly effective. I often use her forms and tools when I treat anxious youth (and adults). I highly recommend this book to mental health professionals, school personnel and parents of anxious children.
5-0 out of 5 stars An eye-opening book
I've ordered several books to better understand my daughter's OCD but since she is not the traditional "hand-washer" the books didn't help. This book does.It explores so many facets of OCD that I didn't see (nor did her psychologist) before. It has helped me look at my daughter's behaviors in a new way and see the disease manifest itself in ways I never thought of before.I would highly recommend this easy-to-read book to anyone who has a child with OCD and/or anxiety problems. It was exactly what I needed.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must buy for anyone working with anxious children
Dr. Wagner's expertise comes alive in this practical guidebook for anyone who is trying to help an anxious child get up and over the "worry hill." The techniques are incredibly empowering for children of all ages and I have successfully used her step-by-step guidelines and easy to use forms. The children have really enjoyed the approaches and it has been a moving experience to watch them overcome their worse fears. I highly highly recommend this workbook and you will not be disappointed.

2-0 out of 5 stars What I expected from Amongst Ourselves
I was looking for a book that would actually help me on working with inside parts. This book delved mininimally in this area and then went back to basic living with DID, i.e., safety plan, letting people know - the basics. Not at all what I was looking for.

5-0 out of 5 stars Validating and Practical Guide for Multiples and Those Who Love Them
I was recently diagnosed with DID after years and years of struggling with my system and believing that I was quite literally insane and needed to be locked away... For years I have been diagnosed as having Major Depression, bipolar disorder, dysthymia (sp?), PTSD, etc... I had a major, disruptive depressive episode five months ago and I'm just now partially recovering. I was fortunate enough to find an intelligent, articulate, and warm therapist that I trusted enough to tell the secret that I've been holding for 20 years. I told her about The People Who Live Behind My Eyes, Joan, Jessica, Erica with a "c", Michael, Little Kara, Adarin (pronounced a-duh-reen), and Mmemnon. She lent me Amongst Ourselves and suggested that I read it and that we use it in therapy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for 2 and up
Our son started showing autistic tendencies at 12 months. He's now 16 months and I've had a hard time coming up with ways to play with him and teach him. I thought this book would help, and it had a few ideas that would work for a younger child, but most of them are for at the very least a 2 year old. It will be a great tool to have in the future, but I was hoping for more workable ideas for a younger child.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful
Anyone with a child on the autism spectrum knows why this book was written!I found it while surfing Amazon and was hoping it would contain the answers I was looking for -- and it really does! The book offers parents very specific suggestions of how to involve and motivate their child in interactive play and it's easy for the parents/caregivers to understand how to adjust for their child's specific spectrum disorder. My son has PDD-NOS and I feel much clearer on how to approach play with him now that I've read the book. The only reason I didn't give this book a 5 star rating is because the book was written in England and therefore contains unavailable resources for people outside the UK and the author occassionally uses different and possibly unfamiliar terminology for non-Brit readers. It's still worth the read! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Gold Standard
It's a shame this book is a special order. Everyone I have shown the book to, has gone gah-gah (this is a word?) The scholastic and academic quality are consistent with the best of the Oxford Press. The clarity andparsimony of the explication is beautiful. The data are current andinsightful.Anyone in clinical practice would benefit from this book.Thediagnoses used are those from DSM-IV, but the insight into patient behaviormay be timeless.Although as an edited book it is subject to inter-authorvariability, I found none; rather a consistent voice of compassion forpatients, tempered by a scientific mind. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Not the best introduction....
to Dr. Samenow's work. The reader would be better to forego this until reading Inside the Criminal Mind. Dr. Samenow has collected questions from lectures over the years from the audience and compiled them into a topicalformat. This book is somewhat of a rehash of earlier works, but the topicalformat makes it a good quick reference to his ideas on various aspects ofcriminality. I recommend this as a companion to Inside the Criminal Mind aswell as The Criminal Personality to all who are working in evaluation andtreatment of criminals.

3-0 out of 5 stars Been there, done that
Rehash of Inside the Criminal Mind with an obsessive bent on saying it's NOT the fault of the family or society that a criminal has developed. Then Samenow goes on to explain how family and society can prevent thedevelopment of an antisocial personality! He then explains how his methodsof rehabilitation are the only methods that work. Seems to me if rehab canbe accomplished by society, then prevention can also be accomplished bysociety. Samenow has trouble not contradicting himself over and over. Asthis book is but a poor restatement of his earlier book, skip this one andget Inside the Criminal Mind instead. Pat Brown/Director/InvestigativeCriminal Profiler/The Sexual Homicide Exchange, Inc.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a superb book whose time is long overdue.
Gambling is one of the most rapdily spreading forms of addiction. In response, the biomedical addictions establishment has responded in its typical fashion of first denial, then quick evaluation whether these"new" patients can make the practitioner more financially comforable. Following this comes the inevitable third generation of turf squabbles, where various segments of the addictions and other interested communities attempt to cut themselves the largest portion of pie they can. 5-0 out of 5 stars Extensive and Informative
Having met the author and listened to him sharing his penetrating understanding of juvenile sexual offenders with numerous clinicians working in the field, I am strongly impressed with the clarity and insight his writing brings to bear on the subject as well. The book not only represents extensive research into the current literature, but also integrates the author's first-hand knowledge with current practice. Although my expertise lies in the computational field, I find Dr. Rich's work highly informative and recommended.

This is a comprehensive book that covers the field from theory to application, and seems to have something useful, relevant, and well informed to say about many aspects of the work. Editorial Review

To the outside world, a child who exhibits an obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)--manifested by constant counting, cleaning, checking, or hoarding--often seems "tuned out" from reality. But for the estimated 3 million-plus people driven to perform such ritualistic behaviors, just the opposite is true: most are painfully aware of their heightened perceptions. Left untreated, a child with OCD can suffer from debilitating anxiety and embarrassment, far beyond the normal levels most healthy kids experience during their school years.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An encouraging, enlightening and hope-filled place to start
When my child was diagnosed (finally--after years of "knowing" something was wrong, after years of professionals being evasive or rude)this was the first book I turned to, and it filled both me and my child with hope. It's a fantastic overview and resource written in a clear yet intelligent style. The Yale-Brown scale is extremely helpful. The list of medications found to alleviate symptoms was helpful (and occasionally cautionary--a good heads-up for when doctors get goofy perscribing). The list of resources, including newsgroups, web sites, meetings, is great--there are others out there...lots!The section that deals with co-morbid conditions was helpful, too.A great overview, with a tone that will calm a frantic parent, and bring a family up to speed for their newly-diagnosed child--so good that years later, we still have it on our shelf and refer to it often.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good indepth Help
There seems to be few OCD related books availible in the United Kingdom, I ordered this book from the USA and was not disappointed. We needed a reference book to help with my sons condition, this book certainly fits the bill, Buy It!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book on helping kids with OCD!!
This is the only book I've found that covers everything about OCD in kids, including dealing with it in the family and at school. The parts on therapy and medications are very thorough, but it goes way past just the medical stuff. I have read some of the books written for doctors but this is down to earth and written for PARENTS--makes it easy to understand the choices you have to help your child. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars this is hard to rate
I found this book to be very gripping, fast paced, and good in that it focused on recovery rather than the graphic details of abuse. However, the problem is that the therapy promoted here is, quite frankly, ridiculous.
2-0 out of 5 stars Least interesting and helpful book on the subject thus far
I have read many books on MPD/DID, and this one is the least interesting and helpful thus far.I do not wish to take any personal jabs at the author, however, MPD/DID is obviously not her only disorder.By the time you get to the end of the book and read about more post-healing "tragedies" and abuse, one gets the feeling that the author thrives on such drama. When people write autobigraphies, they take the reader into their world. I do not wish to be dragged into this author's world. It's not about happy endings, but it is about wanting to read truly good books written by truly healthy people who have truly overcome.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book
This is a very readable account of Multiple Personality. Narrated by a single member of The Flock and supplemented by notes and diary entries of The Flock's therapist, it never gets confusing, as narratives of Multiplicty can.Ms Casey is a very good writer, and the feelings and motivations of several members of The Flock are presented.
