Murphy's "Out of the Fog" was published in 1995 -- that's 11 years behind the times! While he might include some informative and interesting stuff here, ADD/ADHD research is piling up with new insights and implications for personal and social-political use.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent explanation of a confusing diagnosis - but concerned about the reviewer in VA
This is one of the only books that is devoted to this fuzzy area of psychiatry, discussing a diagnosis that is often misdiagnosed.Unfortunately it has been so by a recent reviewer who gave it one star...You've been "clinically diagnosed" wrong if you were diagnosed with hypomania - as a hypomanic I can say that your description of what you've done to yourself in your life would not be a result of hypomania.Find a new psychiatrist who will treat you properly.Best of luck.

1-0 out of 5 stars I AM CLINICALLY DIAGNOSED.HYPOMANIA RUINED MY LIFE.THIS GUY IS FULL OF DOODOO.
I started experiencing hypomania in middle school.I would have rushes of energy where I spoke in my cat's language, I would suddenly run up and down our upstairs hallway a dozen times.I was also extremely estranged from my real emotions and my emerging sexuality.By junior year of high school, I had full-blown bipolar disorder that tended to stay on the severely depressed side.I went on to college, where my years there alternated between severe depression and completely disabling chronic hypomania. My freshman year I thought I was the most profound student in my class and that I should transfer to Harvard since I wasn't happy where I was.One year I went on a starvation binge and started hallucinating and being very paranoid on campus.I thought I was being persecuted by everyone else.
5-0 out of 5 stars We ARE all crazy!
When I first heard of this book I was quite amused by the idea that Americans might be, well, Americans because we're genetically inclined to be a little crazy. The book convinced me that it's true. And by the way, ignore the Publisher's Weekly review, which is made up of bald-faced lies about the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sensitive, scientific and helpful
Thomas Joiner is one of the leading scientific experts on suicide. This is certainly reflected in his excellent review of major theories and evidence---but what strikes me throughout the book is how compassionate, how human and how personal his own story is. He begins the book by noting that his father died by suicide. Throughout his discussions of the research on suicide--which Joiner handles with great skill-- he comes back to remind us that suicide is about someone's parent, brother, sister, child or friend. Suicide has been a topic of research interest since Durkheim advanced his theory of "altruistic" suicide and anomie. Indeed, Joiner's review of the research appears to support this classic theory. Individuals more likely to kill themselves are either feeling like a burden to others (thus, the "altruistic" model) or that they are so detached that they do not "belong". These are certainly issues that we must all keep in mind with an ageing population---of people who may feel that they are a burden. Joiner urges us to recognize that this "perception" is almost always a distortion--- but it may feel real to the suicidal person. Moreover,Joiner clearly shows that suicidal risk is increased as the individual repeats self-injury--- cutting, bruising, dangerous activities, even tatooing. As the individual becomes more accustomed to being in control of his or her pain, suicide becomes the next step on a slippery slope. Of course, other models stress the importance of hopelessness, depression or substance abuse as predictors--and, although Joiner argues these are secondary to belongingness and burden--- those of us (as therapists) working with suicidal people need to attend to all of the precursors. I hope that this excellent, compassionate, very personal but also very scientific book gets a wide readership. It may be difficult to read "about suicide" but it may help you either understand why someone you know may have committed suicide--or, even better, it may help you support someone and help them stay alive. Bravo to Joiner for writing this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Difficult Read
This book would probably be great for anyone studying the psychology of suicide and is interested in a detailed look at past and current research on the subject.I personally did not find it helpful for someone who is grieving. It reads like a text book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Leaves Out Part of the Story
I believe Dr. Joiner exhibits a profound understanding of the suicidal mind and the mechanism of actions required to commit suicide. He really is able to get into the mind of the victim in many ways.Nevertheless there is an astonishing omission in his book -- the failure to address the ways in which antidepressants and other psychotropic drugs can trigger this mechanism. It is astonishing because Dr. Joiner's own father died from a self-mutilating suicide, a hallmark of an antidepressant induced event, and he was indeed on an SSRI as Joiner describes in the preface. To shut out this aspect of the story in the face of all the controversy that has gone on in the past decade and the new evidence that has come to light leading to black box warnings seems highly irresponsible.I can only hope he adds a new section in a future edition. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A helpful reference for teachers and families
This book provides helpful insight into the mental disorders that afflict many elderly people. This can be useful to both educators and family members who are concerned about mental illness affecting the elderly. Teachers and professors can use this to help prepare family studies and human development students for problems that they may encounter in their work. Furthmore, families that are dealing with aging parents or loved ones can use this book to help understand what is going on and how to deal with them in a caring way. This book provides excellent case examples and analysis and I would reccomend it to anyone with an interest or connection in the field.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book helped me when nothing else did
I'm a psych nurse, and this is a wonderful book that a great therapist I know always recommends to her patients.
2-0 out of 5 stars Wasn't Impressed
I thought far too much of the book was used discussing how male dominated the work force is.I would not have bought the book if I knew a good part of it was about white males being favored in the work force, because I know that isn't my problem. I rated it 2 stars instead of 1 star because there were some useful parts of the book unrelated to favoring white males.I learned some ways to better stand up for myself and reword my requests so I sound stronger.Although there were some good points, overall the book was too feminist for me (even though of course I'm for women's rights, that's just not the problem I'm dealing with right now), and a little too anti white male (my white husband is currently my best support system). I thought the author Lois P. Frankel wrote about some controversial issues that didn't need to be included in this book, such as when she suggested that readers join a group supporting a women's right to choose.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, easy book, nice exercises
The best thing about this book, in my opinion, is that Dr. Frankel includes exercises along the way to get the readers to think about their depression and their anger, their causes, and how they can get in touch with their anger and express it appropriately.I generally agree with her premise--that women have been taught not to show their anger, to stuff their feelings, to accept the "glass ceiling," and all these stuffed emotions can lead to depression. But I think she fails to see the chemical component of depression. Why do some women deal with these issues and not get depressed, and some do? Still, medication alone doesn't "cure" depression, any more than therapy alone, and certainly giving women permission to express their anger will help them deal with their depression. After all, what is depression but anger turned inward? ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Bill Clinton's classic ADHD symptoms, Hillary's compensating
Having noticed and become more familiar with symptoms and failures of ADHD, it is helpful for how often these factors show up in society. For example, the "enigma" of Bill Clinton may be confusing to many, but may be a result of the class symptoms of many of the characteristics of ADHD undiagnosed persons whose spouses often compensate for them in many situations and circumstances. This can be seen in many cases where she "spoke for him," in interviews, for example, to explain what he meant, or to clarify his views, specifically in the 1995 interview about Flowers when he said "he had caused pain in his marriage." Reviewing the many complaints or observations of his staff about his personality suggests that he was indeed not only brilliant, but also suffered the effects of ADHD that had never been diagnosed, and should be looked at with what we are beginning to learn about adults with undiagnosed ADHD. All signs point to this problem and may explain much of his approach and his behavior, especially the desire to do everything at once, and to jump around from thing to thing. The extent of the effects of childhood trauma and the possibility of undiagnosed ADHD together make for a very interesting analysis of this complicated person, and how his family and friends deal with, or cover for him, in many situations. Hillary has classic characteristics of many of the compensating ADHD behaviors that unwittingly spouses fall into using to cope with their ADHD mates over time. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Undergraduate Abnormal Psychology
This was my textbook for an upper level undergraduate psychology class. It is intended for use in a survey course in abnormal psychology. It begins with a case history which is referred to as the book progresses. An overview of the four main psychological paradigms comes next. The subsequent chapters examine topics in abnormal psychology under these paradigms. There is also a chapter on psychological assessment, testing, and classification. The subjects that the book covers range across anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, personality disorders, dissociative disorders, sexual dysfunctions, etc. The DSM-IV classification criteria are given for the discussed disorders. For the most part, each chapter uses case studies to exemplify its points. I found this to help ground what I was reading in real life scenarios. Aside from this, there are several side notes and highlights in the text which round out the picture. It is not difficult to read through, and I did not feel that anything was left out. An undergraduate introductory psychology class is a help and should be a prerequisite for reading the book, but one can manage without it. There are also several color photos and charts interspersed throughout the book. This keeps the reader from becoming too bogged down in black and white text. Also, each chapter is divided and subdivided neatly into headings which make for an easier read if one must take a break and provide for easier reference. While the book will not allow the reader the ability to immediately practice psychology, I found it to serve quite well as an undergraduate textbook.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent introductory text for psychology students.

This is an incredible book. It takes you through the harrowing, depressing mind of Billy Milligan. It amazes me so much that it's a true story. I guess sometimes, fact is better than fiction. It's my favorite book - a must-read if you have any interest at all in psychology.

2-0 out of 5 stars I wish I hadn't bought this.
I got so much out of Knapp's book on alcoholism, I foolishly assumed this would be enlightening as well. She seems determined to prove that every woman in America has issues. If you diet, for whatever reason, you have issues. If you eat what you like, you have issues. If you're vegetarian. If you eat junk food. If you work out. If you hate how you look in a bikini. If you LIKE how you look in a bikini. For god's sake, food is just one part of life. And there are actually women who do not have body issues!
5-0 out of 5 stars Every girl should read this
This book is amazing. I go to a large State College and see this sort of thing everyday. Girls spending money the don't have to buy an identity; girls giving themselves up to men just to feel wanted, girls starving themselves simply because they are so lost. This book says everything; very honestly. I think any female can relate to it. I couldn't put it down. I stayed up and read the whole thing in two days. I particularly rec this book if you are about college age from my generation.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent sociological commentary and compelling story
Knapp does an excellent job of weaving in her personal struggles with research and social commentary. She is not willing to simply say, "I wanted control, so I was anorexic."She realizes that there are many pieces to this puzzle, a puzzle that must be put together if our young women are to flourish.

1-0 out of 5 stars an inferior translation
There is a version available at Amazon translated by Nicola Luckhurst. It is excellent, although almost any version would be preferable to Strachey's mechanistic translations of Freud's work.
5-0 out of 5 stars The hidden drives beneath hysteria
A fascinating book that explores the hidden factors behind anxiety, written when Freudwas still studying his first hysterical patients that became famous in thepsychoanalytic literature. The collaboration with Breur was actually sealed with thisbook, but ironically it was also the end of their friendship. Apart from thepsychoanalytic concepts, the reader can really enjoy the five case studies included in"Study on hysteria". Only one case study was written by Breur and this goes to showthat Freud really wanted to go deep into the unconscious whereas Breur after the firstpatient didn't go any further; basically because he would have had to confront himselfwith the patient's sexual drives as well as his instincts. This is a very stimulating bookthat allows the reader to appreciate the kind of female patients affected by hysteriabefore the 20th century, that were not understood by most psychiatrists. Freudmenaged to understand why the repression of the sexual instinct led to a neurosis. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Adequate treatment of mental disorders, but lacks depth
This text provides interesting descriptions of mental disorders. However, it often gives only a fleeting consideration of etiological factors, focusing instead on the regurgitation of the DSM criteria of such disorders. In other words, the text is oriented towards diagnostic criteria rather than theory and etiology. The authors attempt to justify this approach by repeatedly claiming that "little is known about the causes many of the disorders categorized by the DSM".Epistemological limitations aside, however, it seems that the authors would have done well to spend more time addressing hypotheses and theories of etiology, rather than repeatedly elaborating upon the self-explanatory DSM criteria. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars If you buy one book on trauma, here it is!
If you buy just one book on Trauma this is the one to buy. Not only does Dr. Allen write with compassion and understanding, but he writes both about despair and hope. Trauma survivors reading the first half of the book will see themselves and their histories in the details he writes about trauma. You will also come to a better understanding of just why Trauma is so hard to leave behind. His chapters on brain physiology may seem complicated, but more than anything they are worth wading through for you to gain forgiveness for yourself and the persistence of your traumatic reactions. In the second half of the book he offers hope in the form of chapters (not lists) of very specific things you can do to help yourself recover. Dr. Allen treats the trauma survivor with respect and confidence that s/he can and will work towards a better future.
5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and wise "self-education" book
This book will help trauma sufferers and the mental health professionals who work with traumatized individuals. While filled with helpful advise, it moves beyond simple explanations and easy answers. It's not a "light" read, but it's well worth the effort. This is a healing and informative book for any reader who wants to understand the effects of trauma on the self and relationships. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Gave intrigue to dreary diagnostic material from the DSM IV.
I've resisted the dreary study of diagnostic categories for years. I was delighted to find a book on psychopathology that brought the diagnostic categories to life.Rather than placing troubled souls in little boxes, this book integrates the Adlerian theory of lifestyle. I now have a clearer picture of how a client's mistaken beliefs can lead him/her in the direction of a diagnostic category. With this book as an enjoyable, readible foundation, I can now brave the ever so tedious DSM IV.Thank-you so much. 5-0 out of 5 stars The Most Comprehensive Book on Anxiety
In this 2nd edition to his classic work, David Barlow walks the reader through the various anxiety disorders. From assessment to intervention this book is complete in every way for each anxiety disorder. Also included are theoretical models that explain the function of anxiety, as well as the relation of thoughts, behaviors, emotions, and physiology. This is a book that is firmly grounded on strong and replicated empirical findings. It is detailed yet readable, and thorough yet well-organized.It is a must-read for students, researchers, and clinicians wishing to better understand the phenomenon of anxiety. It is quite likely the most comprehensive book on anxiety currently available within the field of psychology. If you read only one book on anxiety this year, make it Barlow's. ...
