5-0 out of 5 stars Does Sari know me personally?
After reading her book I feel as if she does know me personally. Not even my mother could so accurately describe how I feel about my disorganization or my lack of attention. The nice thing about this book is it doesn't try to group all women with ADD into the same category. Some of us are hyper while others, like me, tend to withdraw from interaction.I could continue to identify with this book but my main point is you need to read it.I especially want non ADD people to read it so they might be able to understand some things.

5-0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive explaination
I have recently been diagnosed with ADHD. My pyschatrist (a female) recommended this book. Although I'd read "Driven to Distraction" and "Delivered From Distraction," this book truly explained the disorder in its many forms and specifically how it impacts women. Sadly, I recognized myself in its pages... It gives me hope, however, to discover that I am not alone, and after years of feeling as though I haven't lived up to my potential, (I'm 29) there IS a reason why I feel this way. I can move forward with the tools (medication, structure, therapy) suggested in this book. It is a necessary component to any female ADHD/ADD patient. It is lenghtly and kind of wordy at times... It's best read in spurts or small chunks, as much of the information is dense. Take your time and read this one-- it's worth it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Women, uncap your pens
If you're ADD like me -- "ADD Like Me" wow, what a great movie title! Sorry; I digress -- anyway, if you are, then you'll be scribbling and underlining like mad all through this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Valuable resource for understanding and treating self-injury
In the first part of this accessible and comprehensive work, Barent does a sterling job of distinguishing the difference between self-injury and body alterations (tattoos, piercing, brands, etc.) and self-injury and suicide.Echoing my own view, he also presents a strong case for steering clear of suicidal language when referring to self-injury, for example, terms such as "attempted suicide," "suicidal gesture," and "parasuicide."
5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Text For Therapists and Those Seeking Help
There are many self-help paperbacks already published on self-injury that are readable, helpful and under $15. "Treating Self-Injury" is written like a textbook but it is the most organized and comprehensive of all that I have seen. I would recommend it especially for school personnel or therapists who have little experience with "cutters" or those who cope through other forms of self-injury. The text would aid senior clinicians in intergrating various models into a coherent approach for treatment. The author wrote one of the first books that brought self-injury out of the medical closet, "Self-Mutilation: Theory, Research and Treatment" (1988).

5-0 out of 5 stars CLEAR, COMPREHENSIVE, BRILLIANT, highly readable and useful
"The information contained in this book is SO IMPORTANT THAT NO CLINICIAN CAN AFFORD TO MISS IT. The book offers a clear, comprehensive, and cogent review of the history of the mental health field's thinking about sexuality and gender, and an extraordinarily thoughtful and extensive exploration of assessment and intervention issues with gender-variant people and their families. Lev's knowledge of the subject is phenomenal, and the breadth and clarity of her writing are brilliant. This book lays out an enormous amount of complex material in a highly readable and useful text. . . . 3-0 out of 5 stars Living Without Depression and Maniac Depression: A workbook for maintaining Mood Stability
This book was not as helpful as I had hoped. It does contain legal information that was helpful, and legal papers to fill out in case of emergency. The rest of the worksheets were pretty basic and I dont think if I had the change to buy it again, that I would.

I ordered this book used from a private seller. Not only was the book in the condition promised but it arrived well before the time when I expected it to.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource With Qualifications
This book helped me immensely as I was coping with major depression. I couldn't stop crying, feeling sorry for myself and being completely terrified of the total loss of control in my life. The book examines many aspects of wellbeing, and is BEST in providing practical suggestions and solutions while being sensitive to a very diverse audience (uraban/rural/old/young..). however...the book does have a tendency of making you feel too sorry for yourself. I am an adventurous, intelligent, sensitive person, and depression crippled my feelings. The book seems to suggest that "stability" is better than extreme emotions or living with too much adventure. I believe you can radically transform your life - you just need enough motivation to overcome repeated setbacks. Use this book in conjunction with some motivational reading that charges you up. Also, the book spends a lot of time on medication. I decided NOT to use any medication, and managed to restore my serotonin levels by daily exercise and proper nutrition. The book does stress the importance of natural remedies to depression, but seems to suggest medication is an unavoidable necessity. This isn't the case. Read "Prozac Backlash" or "Beyond Prozac" (forget the authors), which discredit this culture of chemical dependency to get better. You CAN get well. Stay focussed, and use the book's suggestions to eliminate triggers. Happy recovery! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential for psychology, counseling, and social work major
The "bible" of mental health diagnosis, it is a must have for those pursuing a career in any mental health specialty. Clearly describes the criteria for diagnosis. Provides better understanding of the line between certain mental illness

4-0 out of 5 stars A TOOL, NOT A NOVEL
The DSM-IV is a necessary tool in mental health care! It is not a coffee table book, nor a novel that one cuddles as they caress a mug of hot cocoa. If you are a professional, a student, or if you work with the mentally ill population in any capacity..this book is a must. The codes are for insurance rating purposes. This same codong is used for all medical conditions... Hardly a bad thing! People want their insurance to pay!It may be regretable that a diagnosis is immediately required in order for healthcare professionals to receive payment. But this is true of all healthcare-- psychiatric or otherwise. This is not a book for the patient.Anyone who works in the mental health arena, knows that this is not a layman's guide to mental health disorders!Anyone who suggests that it can be used in "self-diagnosis" has little understanding of mental illness. You wouldn't give a 5 year old a chainsaw!

1-0 out of 5 stars ewe, gross!
This manual disenfranchises all that is interesting about human nature. We professionals are all aware it was created for insurance coding, but it has somehow contaminated the less intelligent careerists in our ranks (which is just about all of us), who are susceptible to its suggestion, and we now find ourselves using this caricature tabloid like a map of the psyche itself. This manual is the cause and effect of an anti-intellectual strain of professionalism that has all but replaced scholarship and reflection. If this were the Bible, we would all be guilty of evangelical fundamentalism. When we consider the thousands of professionals (working on task forces and subcommitees) that produced this megillah, a principle from a neighboring behavioral discipline comes to mind, i.e. freedom andintelligence in individuals -- indeed consciousness itself -- is inversely proportional to the size of the group in which they participate.Psychology is all but officially a sham discipline. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to Ego Psychological Theory
Dr. Goldstein's book provides students with a survey of the major contributors to ego psychological theory. To her credit, she manages to effectively communicate sometimes difficult material without resorting to the complicated jargon that one often finds in similar psychoanalytic texts.Ego Psychology and Social Work Practice 2nd Edition enables beginners to appreciate some of the insights of the ego psychologists without having to read and interpret the original texts. This would be a daunting task and unnecessarily laborious for a beginning student. It also provides more experienced clinicians the opportunity to review material germane to clinical practice or as an accompaniment to more advanced reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars the best!!
Hot-n-hulky Eda Goldstein has written a classic for mental health practitioners. A skillful integration of Ego Psychology practice and treatment.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book, essential for all clinical social workers
This book is an excellent primer for clinical social workers working with volatile populations as it addresses ego functioning and deficits in depth. It additionally provides invaluable insight intoborderline and other personality disordered individuals, as well as a survey of other noted theorists, besides Dr. Goldstein in the areas of ego functions. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Great book - can be triggering/disturbing though
Read this as a teenager after my mother read it.The book was amazing, I couldn't seem to put it down.It was incredible what this woman went through. However, if you are a survivor of abuse it can be triggering at times and disturbing for anyone. The abuse is discribed explicitly in some cases and with such details you can tend to hold onto it and internalize the childs pain.Be careful - otherwise it was a great read.

5-0 out of 5 stars I have a love-hate relationship with this book.
I am a multiple, but not of the sort Truddi Chase is. It's important to remember that each multiple is different, and each multiple's experience is different. In that way, I find the idea that this is an "insight into the world of MPD" to be laughable.
3-0 out of 5 stars Interestingly disturbing
This is not a book a would normally be drawn to.It was passed along to me as an interesting read. And that it is, for I imagine there is no other story like it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A complete, in depth analysis of extraordinary evil
Wow, this is a deep, powerful book. I gave it five stars because it was very complete. The author started with his proposal that ordinary people can commit evil, introduces a model of what influences/causes extraordinary evil, and follows up on what can and should be done to ease (impossible to halt entirely) the spread of evil. Interspersed in every chapter is a harrowing account of genocide told by the perspective of the victims or eyewitnesses.
5-0 out of 5 stars Incredibly well-written.
I was always fascinated with the question of human cruelty and the history of genocides, and after researching review on Amazon.com, settled on this book by James Waller. I was 100% right. It's incredibly well-written. Very easy to read, written in clear language in short chapters. Thoroughly researched. James Waller references and examines all the works that have been written on this topic before. His conclusions are profound, and dare I say it, correct.
5-0 out of 5 stars It Could Happen to You
After buying this book and reading it myself, I loaned it to my brother and then gave it to my local library where I hope it will be read by many others.

The collaborative work of clinical psychologist Steven Taylor (Department of Psychiatry, University of British Columbia, Canada) andprofessor of psychiatry Gordon Asmundson (Research Director, Faculty of Kinesiology and Health Studies, University of Regina, Canada), Treating Health Anxiety: A Cognitive-Behavioral Approach is a solid, in-depth resource focusing especially on helping those people for whom fears of contracting a serious illness cause excessive, serious, and chronic problems with day-to-day life. Reviewing current knowledge about health anxiety disorders, stressing the need for continuing collaboration between Cognitive-Behavioral practitioners and primary care physicians, outlining recent advances in the treatment of health anxieties, and much more, Treating Health Anxiety is a seminal contribution with emphasis on the practical and a welcome contribution to mental health reference shelves.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!
The book is great, and a "must have" for those who seek a better understanding of personality and its disorders. 5-0 out of 5 stars One man's personality disorder . . .
. . . is another man's path to riches, professional prestige, and social control.5-0 out of 5 stars The best book on personality disorders on the market !!!
There are few books in psychology that are as comprehensive in scope and detail as Dr. Millon's book. The book provides a solid, integrative theory of personality and personality disorders that can be used not only in research, but also clinical practice by psychologists from any theoretical orientation. Because it is so comprehensive, the book is especially useful for students. The first section of the book (approximately 200 pgs.) is dedicated to laying down a foundation for the study of personality disorders -- the issues that it entails and a concise (yet, detailed) review of various personality theories.Dr. Millon then presents a rational, integrated theory of personality that is the foundation of his integrated biopsychosocial approach to personality. The rest of the book is dedicated to a detailed examination of the DSM-IV personality disorders. This single book can serve as a primary text for any advanced course in personality. Whether one aggrees with Dr. Millon's theory (and few can disagree with it completely once they understand it's comprehensive and integrated nature), this book is one that anybody who deals with the personality disorders MUST have on their bookshelf. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for All Behavior Analysts
Controversial Therapies exposes the ugly, inconvenient truth about sensory integration, auditory integration training, facilitated communication, positive behavior support, and a host of other fads and bogus treatments. Jacobson, Foxx, and Mulick have complied a set of chapters, and written many themselves, that provides all the ammunition that anyone needs to shoot down these wasteful and chronic malignancies that pervade the field of developmental disabilities and especially autism.

Some notes about the book:
5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Reading
Autism and other disorders on the Autistic Spectrum are among the most serious of behavioral diagnoses. As such, the ASD's should be the focus of our most intensive, science-based efforts to find ways to address the difficulties we associate with the diagnoses (see www.asatonline.org).Instead, treatment has been a history of fad, with charlatans or the uninformed pushing useless and potentially dangerous "treatments."This book will inform you of the history, as well as current trends. Most importantly, it will show you how to avoid the common non-science based traps. The field's friend, Dr. John Jacobson, recently died. This book is a fitting final contribution. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An important book to read for anyone interested in ECT
Max Fink's book discusses ECT in detail, but also in terms that the majority of patients can understand. It is clearly written, without hype, and describes ECT from the perspective of an experienced and caring clinician.I frequently recommend it for patients who are considering ECT.
4-0 out of 5 stars FDAapproved vagus nerve stimulation-a much better therapy
In February of 2005, the FDA approved vagus nerve stimulation as a treatment for chronic depression. With this approval, for many patients electro-convulsive therapy will no longer be the most aggressive way to treat their chronic disease. Max Fink's book is very helpful in explaining and comforting a patient that is fearful of ECT. There is a terrible stigma associated with shock therapy. If it works, the relapse rate is high. For my money, I think I will go with vagus nerve stimulation and itsbenefits which are apparently sustained over a long time.

2-0 out of 5 stars Cautious, Not Unconvinced
I have some hesitation recommending a book on Electro-shock which is so clearly pro-ECT and does not review this very controversial subject with an objective eye, however, having said that, I believe it is a worthwhile book as long as it is read in conjunction with a book that seriously questions the value of ECT and studies the mechanism by which it is assumed to work.Dr. Fink gives some very clear and logical sounding reasons for choosing ECT, but he does not counterbalance theseRead more

Both of these books written by Edwin Shneidman Ph.D are insightful and stimulating reading. They make for good starter texts for people interested in suicide because they are so well written. Dr. Shneidman is arguably the dean ofAmerican Sucidology. They are just very informative and accessible. These are must reads.

From my point of view, this book draws a very good picture about the suicidal mind.It mentioned why and how people become suicidal and how early intervention can help healing this mind.I like the way the author presents the topic suicide. He presented it in an academic and scientific way, which is a great way for others to understand suicidal thinking. It has valuable case studies and scientific research for others to understand the topic of suicide. It is for professionals, friends, family and significant others who are associated with the suicidal individuals to read, for the sake of understanding their judgmental mind and their "incurable" psychological pain. This book creates a bridge for others to understand what is on suicidal individuals' head and why these individuals are reluctant in seeking help (the emperor in their head that now becomes the dictator, which eliminates the option for the depressed/anxious individuals to choose how to live life).

5-0 out of 5 stars Now I get it
I have a personality disorder and I've found it difficult to change. This book explained why and gave me a concrete method to effectuate change.I read the lay version "Reinventing Your Life" but I found this version more useful. After almost 5 years of therapy with a competent therapist, I felt like a cognitive therapy failure. Now I know that cognitive therapy can work, but not the way I expected it to--not the way it works for many people. No "Ten Days to Self Esteem" for me.I have to work harder, at a deeper level, in order to get better. This book gives practical advice on how to achieve the change I want.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical and Useful Guidelines
I highly recommend this illuminating and comprehensive guide. Young's ability to integrate various theoretical orientations and provide a clinically systematic, straightforward method for working with maladaptivetraits is astonishing. This book rocks. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative, easy to follow and understand
After purchasing many books on Autism Spectrum Disorders I finally found one that made it clear what to do with the diagnosis, how to get help, and how to handle a part of my life that has seemed so out of control. After my son was diagnosed I had no idea what to do. This book covers all of my questions and answered them clearly. I especially love the real life stories the Doyle sisters use to help me "get it".
5-0 out of 5 stars EASY to read!
I highly recommend this book which is logically organized in an easy-to-read format. As the title suggests, it answered all my questions regarding early signs and symptoms, the difference between an autism spectrum disorder and ADHD, appropriate testing and diagnosis, all the way through interventions and treatment. The two authors include case history and examples that parents can relate to, especially since one of the authors is a parent of a child diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder.I have referred to this book many times to quickly look up information, and have found the bulleted lists and tables extremely helpful, especially since I am a visual learner!
